001. C.1965, Swiss Le Coultre "Atmos" Self Winding clock. Ever popular and still made today {selling in better stores for around $2000}, the clock is wound by changes in atmospheric pressure. The brass case has some discoloration on the gold plating. The movement is sound and seems to run {regulation may be required}. This model has lift-off top, held on with 2 friction pins. Height 9¼" Reserve $350
002. C.1925, Seth Thomas, 8-Day Wheel Clock, for the U.S.Navy {signed on dial}. This is the first one of these I’ve seen; it is much larger than it appears in the picture, the span between handle tips at 18 ½", and the dial measuring 8". Note winding is below the 12, with a large seconds bit above the 6, and the F/S adjustment at around 8:30. The silvered dual is lettered in black, and other than minor scratches and oxidation around the winding hole, is excellent. The heavy cast brass case has a hinged bezel and a hasp for a small padlock on the right side. This should appeal to the military buffs. Running. Wt=21 pounds. Reserve $1100
003. C.1890, Ansonia 8-Day "Fisherman Swing" in excellent original condition. This is the desirable small can model, with original 3" dial {minor rust stain on paper dial near center – from hour hand}. The statue retains outstanding original patina with the perfect amount of oxidation. The canister retains nickel plating and sharp edges. We find that not all of these small canisters run 8-days; this has the heavy spring with rear winding stud that is designed to go a week. As nice as they come. Ht 25" Reserve $3100
004. C.1885, German, Lenzkirch, Digital Flick clock in very good original condition. It would be excellent, except a simple flat dust cover is missing from the bottom {most any person handy with sheet brass and cutters could make one}. The well made movement is signed Lenzkirch, #619433, and is in running order. The quality of workmanship is really several cuts above Ansonia; note all 4 sides have heavy beveled glass in good condition; minor dimple in brass top. See this case pictured in Charles Allix book on Carriage Clocks, page 209. Ht 8¼" Reserve: $400
005. C.1917, New Haven Clock Co, "Taunton" model in very good condition. This clocks was part of their wooden case "Crystal Regulator" line, the case of solid mahogany, and with beveled glass in front; the case nicely refinished {could stand another coat}. Typical faux mercury pendulum is original and sound. Has premium round movement with rack &s snail striking; porcelain dial is excellent, and clock strikes on a cathedral gong. White spot at 9:30 is from flash. Height 11½" Reserve $250
006. C.1870, E. Ingraham & Co., "Doric", 1-Day, time, strike and alarm, in generally clean condition with original "horseback rider" gold leaf tablet {re-blacked from rear}. The rosewood case was refinished long ago [very nice job], and clock retains original label, hands and hardware, even old cast brass key. Old paper dial is worn around right wind hold + numeral ‘4’. Ht 16" Reserve: $250
007. C.1880, Ansonia Clock Co, "Grandfather" traveling calendar clock with moonphase. This is a rare novelty clock. The dial center has come loose and is flopping around {Ansonia trademark is faint but legible}. The original moon disc is still good {rotates OK} and the chapter ring and calendar indications are all sharp. The case itself is worn to brass in several spots and the spelter trim ring and pedestal have lost their nickel. See Ly {2nd Ed} page 77 for picture of both clock and movement. In perfect order, this would bring $1200. Height 7 ½" Reserve $575
008. C.1950, Swiss, "Semca" International Desk Set, with an 8-day lever clock, flanked by a thermometer with both F° & C° Scales, and an Aneroid barometer on the right with nomenclature in English, German and French. The heavy brass case retains original gilding. Some dust has gotten in behind the crystals, but the clock ticks and both instruments are working as well. Serial number 173-189, on a molded black plastic base. High quality throughout. Height 5" Reserve $400
009. C.1920, German Shelf Cuckoo, as-found. This is a spring driven clock with a heavy cast plate movement [2-day]. Top center leaf {on roof railing} is broken away and left roof corbel missing; left bellows needs recovering; right one is OK, both flutes original, as is bird; original hands have been glued and need better repair. Still everything there is original and restorable and this clock will clean up to a very attractive Black Forest item. Height 18" Reserve $500
010. C.1880, German, for the English Market, Fusee Shelf Cuckoo, in good condition. The large & robust movement in this clock is an 8-day double fusee with full brass plates. The rear plate has an old scab repair {see image, lower right} that does not affect the operation. The well carved Gothic style case is absent the top trim, & one leaf tip missing, otherwise fine detail. Bellows and bird are original; hands later. Note unique latching bezel covering dial. This clock retains original retail label on rear: "Kamerer, Kuss & Co., Patronized by Her Majesty, 56 New Oxford St, … A large assortment of Curiosity & Cuckoo Clocks always on sale --- Clocks wound and kept in repair by the year" Ht 19 ½" Reserve $850
011. C.1904, Ansonia "Crystal Regulator No.3" [Porcelain], in light iridescent green, with dark green and gold highlights. This is a nice original clock from a local home, still with nicotine around the winding holes of the perfect porcelain dial. Note fancy pendulum with gilt rococo frame. The case has no chips nor cracks; minor wear to highlights. See also lot 220. Height 18¼" Reserve $3200
012. C.1913, Seth Thomas "Orchid No. 0", Oval Crystal Regulator for A. Stowell & Co. {Boston} in good, as-found condition. The case is slightly brown from oxidation, and one of the nuts on the pendulum has been replaced [glass tubes are fine]. The porcelain dial is perfect and original signature for A. Stowell & Co., is sharp and clear. All 4 panes of curved & beveled glass are fine. Runs and strikes on a flat wire gong, but would benefit from service if daily use is required. Height 9½" Reserve $400
013. C.1919 {dated}, rare Franz Vosseler 30-Day Mantel timepiece [less dome], mini-Louvre design. This is the second Vosseler we’ve had winding at 9 instead of 6; the plates are otherwise identical to Horolovar #1145A. Note mini disc pendulum {separate image} Seems to run a bit fast, probably due to short or incorrect suspension wire; lower block is also incorrect. Base has a stress crack that has been repaired with soft solder [doesn’t look so bad]. Hands and dial are original. Base engraved with a presentation dated 1919. I think these are worth $900; potential here. Height 8 ¼" Reserve $500
014. C.1906, German [Kienzle], 400-Day, Disc pendulum clock in a 4-Glasss "Crystal" case in very good original condition. See Horolovar [10th Edition], plate1183, front wind, this one serial #103950, {note similarities to plate 1574F}. The porcelain dial has an edge chip to the right of the 3 that can be filled in later [barely shows]; the dial with poly-chrome floral wreaths is otherwise excellent. Note the dial is signed Urania [but not the movement]. There are traces of gilding still evident on the case, and the clock tries to run; height 11" Reserve $550
015. C.1904, German/French 400-Day, Disc Pendulum Clock, the dial signed France and in excellent condition. The case is virtually identical to the previous lot, this one nicely polished and lacquered. See Horolovar, plate 1179 for this movement. All 4 panes of beveled glass are good and the clock seems to run. French porcelain dial is good [very minor scratches in numerals 4+5], and gilt French hands are original {by all appearances, only the movement and pendulum were imported into France to complete this model}. The suspension wire is broken, but original block and fork are present. Height 11" Reserve $600
016. C.1900, Ansonia, Parlor Ink No. ?? in excellent original condition. We looked through several Ansonia catalogs and could not find this one, however, it has the same Calendar Dial and movement as Parlor Ink #3. Retains original hexagonal crystal ink wells and unusual Egyptian covers. The base and covers are spelter, and retain old oxidized finish. Note fancy gilt pen holder with horseshoe {ballpoint in photo}. The original paper dial has a tan spot in the lower right quadrant, but is quite legible and the Ansonia trademark shows clearly. Height 9" Reserve $500
017. C.1880, Swiss, Music Box with 5 bells and bird strikers. This box plays 6 lively tunes with virtually no damper noise and there are no broken teeth. There is a haze of rust on the comb and the 8" cylinder is dark, but the pins are still quite good. The rosewood veneer on the box is still intact, with some minor blemishes, and some bits of string inlay missing. But overall I would classify this as "very good plus" and a box that anyone can enjoy immediately owing to its’ excellent sound. Includes on-off lever for bells. Width = 19" Ht = 8 ½" Reserve: $2250
018. C.1905, German, Mira Disc Music Box, playing 6¾" discs on a single 3-octave comb {34 teeth}. This is an amazing and LOUD little music box, and comes with 18 lively discs [twelve are old, and 6 from 1980], including Pretender’s March, Skater’s Waltz, Rosita, & Take a Sail in My Boat The mahogany case retains original finish in very good condition, and the lid with original Mira print {couple of cola stains}. Overall a great beginners music box that will put a smile on anyone’s face when it plays. See photo of this box in Bower’s Encyclopedia of Automatic Musical Instruments, page 123, top. Measures 7 x 9½ x 6" tall. Reserve $1500
018a. C.1900, German, Symphonion Model No. 10, disc music box, playing 7-11/16" discs. This box is in good condition and plays loudly, BUT has only one disc and the winder has gotten lost. We cut a slot in a piece of 3/8" tubing and turned that with vice grips to verify the playing condition. See Bower’s Encyclopedia of Automatic Musical Instruments, page 218 for illustration of this model. Has full width iron bedplate, single comb with 41 teeth, very minor rust on teeth, all teeth good. 8½d x 10½w x 6 ½" tall Reserve $725
019. C.1900, German, 2-Note Shelf Trumpeter, in generally good condition. The 2 horns that should extend from the bottom of the reed chambers are missing, so it sounds more like a 2 note organ instead of a trumpeter. Note these horns can be made of brass, tinned steel or even cardstock and I’ve seen all 3, however you should plan to make these. It also appears that there was a leafy crest on the top, and the numeral VII is lacking too. On the plus side, everything remaining is original, including the hands, numerals, pendulum and the trumpeter figure. Heavy cast plate movement is signed: "G.H.S.", and runs briskly. With only modest attention, this clock can be nicely restored; height 22" Reserve $1250
020. C.1898, Self Winding Clock Co., New York, Model 29, oak cased wall clock in very good condition. The well figured oak veneer case has been attractively refinished. When we picked the clock up it was running on 2 fresh D cells, so we imagine it will go for a year on a new "lantern" battery. 14" dial slightly discolored around the edges, but does not show with door closed. Height 21½" Lots of clock for the money: reserve $300
021. C.1902, Ansonia Royal Bonn "LaLayon", Porcelain china clock in excellent original condition. Note unusual tri-color case, beginning with muted red at top, descending to yellow and ending with dark green at the bottom See white and red pansies, flanked by additional flowers in relief and accented with gold. See Ly, page 636 for 4 different decoration themes. The only things that keep this from being a superior clock are hairline cracks by the winding holes. Still very nice. Ht 14½" Reserve $1000
022. C.1905, Ansonia Clock Co., "Reflex" Porcelain china clock in excellent original condition, clean and running. The forest green case is sound with no cracks nor blemishes, and retains gold highlights, and accented with dark pink and yellow flowers below the dial. The open ‘scape porcelain dial is excellent with no chips nor cracks and with Ansonia trademark on the dial center. The movement recently cleaned and running well. Strikes the hours and halves on a steel cathedral gong. Some wear to "Reflex" signature on rear. Ht 11" Reserve $500
023. C.1902, Ansonia Royal Bonn "LaVerdon", Porcelain china clock in royal blue with dark pink flowers and gold accents [some wear to accents]. This clock came to us from a local collector and was just professionally cleaned and is in good running order. The porcelain dial is excellent, with minor hairlines at 2:30. Has desirable open escapement and original hands; note both dial center and chapter ring with Ansonia address. Gold signature on rear of case is excellent. Signed Ansonia movement. The only minor drawback is an old replacement pendulum which has been there a long while, and keeps time….you can certainly locate a replacement at a Mart if you search around. Ht 14¼" Reserve $800
024. C.1904, Ansonia Royal Bonn "LaVeta" , with yellow and pink floral decorations and accent color of dark red-clay, plus gold highlights. Retains original paper dial with some wear and discoloration {chapter markers rubbed off from 9 to 11}. Movement is clean and running. The case is perfect and with good rear Bonn signature. Overall very good+ condition; ht 11" Reserve $450
025. C.1948, Lux Clock Mfg Co., Waterbury, Conn, Organ Grinder and Monkey animated alarm clock, in generally good original condition with superb dial. The black and chrome case has some minor rust and the black paint is worn from the sides, a result of holding the clock to wind it. The main shaft of the organ and the grinder’s hand are attached to the ‘scape wheel pivot and turn some with each tick of the clock. Ticks, & alarms loudly; winders and set knobs intact. Height 4 ½" Reserve $275
026. C.1949, Keebler Clock Co., Philadelphia, Pa, Organ Grinder and Bear animated alarm clock, in generally good original condition with superb dial. The light metallic green case shows wear, and is missing its’ 4 rubber cushion feet, and with paint loss along the edges. The main shaft of the organ and the grinder’s hand are attached to the ‘scape wheel pivot and turn some with each tick of the clock. Ticks, + alarms loudly; winders and set knobs intact. Note that Keebler purchased the movement from Lux {or had the entire clock made to order}, as the movement and most case components are identical to the previous lot. We expect a lot of interest on both of these. Height 4" Reserve $275
027. C.1900, The India Ivory Co., Providence, RI, a musical alarm clock in very good condition. The paper dial is very good with only minor abrasion at 5:30. The nickel plating over steel case is excellent except for minor rust on the rear cover. Ticks OK and plays a pleasant tune for the alarm. This clock is quite small, and the dimension shown is with handle up; ht 5" Reserve $250
028. C.1919, One Hand Clock Co., Warren, Pa, a generally good example of the 6" dial model {they came in at least 3 sizes}. This particular clock has an advertising dial for Buffalo Envelope Company, but the clock sat in direct sun light and the ad is very faint {not visible in photo} the numerals themselves are quite legible. Also some oil has crept in from the movement and there are several small oil spots on the dial. The bezel has some small scratches where it has been removed for service, and the clock seems to run OK. With original base. Ht 8¾’ Reserve $200
029. C.1947, Swedish, Westerstrand Urafabrik, Toreboda, gilt wood cartel clock in good original condition. Note the bottom finial got lost somewhere, but the clock is otherwise complete and sound, with hand pierced and engraved hands. Well made 8-day movement runs and strikes on a coiled wire gong. This case is made in 18th Century French style. See sister to this clock in Terwilliger’s Silent Auction catalog #25, lot 27 {note bottom finial} Height 18¼" Reserve 350
030. C.1860, French, 4-Column Empire Clock, ebonized pearwood, with ormolu mounts and dial surround. Although the base has a dry split, the clock is otherwise original and sound and in very good condition. Retains original cast/grid pendulum with 7 shells in a circle and the grid-iron flanked by well chased swans. The dial is engine turned brass, silvered, and the lacquer has discolored slightly. The well made bell strike movement is signed simply "FC" in script. A nice example of the Empire style; height 18" Reserve $700
031. C.1920, German, Junghans, Westminster chime mantel clock in very good original condition. Minor nicks to edge moldings, but otherwise a nice architectural mahogany case with original finish. The square dial has a silvered brass chapter ring and cast floral spandrels in the Nouveau style at each corner. Hidden from view by the door, above the dial are subsidiary dials with hands for setting fast/slow and chime/silent. The well made full plate movement is signed with Junghans trademark and chimes the quarters on a steel rod set. Ht 18" Reserve $300
032. C.1925, Seth Thomas "Chime Clock # 64-A", playing Sonora chime melody on 4 steel rods. Late in their Sonora production, Seth Thomas changed over to rods to compete with less expensive imports. This clock still has the sturdy separate chime movement #119, winding at 3 o’clock, and with a long shaft to carry the torque back to the rear movement. Moreover this particular clock has a premium dial with raised bronze numerals {some discoloration}. Case retains original finish; runs and chimes nicely. Height 14" Reserve $250
033. C.1860, Fremch, Morbier 2-Weight, Prayer repeat wall clock in good condition, clean and running. The dial surround and pendulum have been sprayed gold in lieu of cleaning, and might be better stripped and polished. The porcelain dial is original and perfect, as are the hands; the dial prominently signed Tisserand, a`Vonnas. This heavy movement uses an "anchor" escapement, and strikes the hour on a heavy coiled gong and then repeats the hour at 2 minutes after. Right side door is loose. This robust movement, if maintained will last indefinitely. Note dial surround is loose and needs 4 proper machine screws to hold it in place. Dial = 9", height 58" Reserve $450
034. C.1905, Seth Thomas, "Regulator No. 2" in oak and in fair to good condition. There are a few small veneer chips around the bottom center trim of case is totally missing. Interior label is dark and with pierced holes from the pendulum falling off. The original dial has several flakes and is somewhat dirty. On the plus side, all the hardware is original and the clock is in running order. Height 34" Reserve $700
035. C.1920, Simplex Time Recorder Co., Gardner, Mass, a large oak cased 8-day "punching in" clock. The robust double spring time movement at top made under contract by Seth Thomas, and the lower printing mechanism made by Simplex. This clock is out of a factory in Maine, and hung in a general store in Ogunquit until the consignor bought it in 1958 for $35. Retains original door key as well as winder and is in very good to excellent condition. Height 42" Reserve $325
036. C.1920, German, Black Forest Cuckoo in good restored condition. A couple of leaf tips have been re-glued, but everything is there. The bellows and flutes are new {nice deep tone}, and the pendulum is new as well. Retains heavy old movement, and is running and "cucking" well. Original hands and numerals are excellent; good old weights as well. Height, bird to pendulum tip, 23" Reserve $275
037. C.1917, Waterbury Clock Co., "Cumberland", mahogany cased tambour clock in good original condition. There are some minor nicks and scrapes around the case that can be touched up. The floral carving on the front is crisp and sharp. Original finish is slightly crazed and will polish up nicely. Note 8 inch porcelain dial is perfect and bright. Original hands, gong, movement and hardware. Note crystal has some scratches that appear as a slight shadow on the dial. This is a LARGE clock, 24" wide and 14¼" tall. Reserve $150
038. C.1890, Waterbury "SEINE" gilt spelter mantel clock, as-found. The case has been sprayed with gold enamel, but is sound with no breaks. The movement is sound and complete but would benefit from cleaning; the porcelain dial is perfect; original hands and pendulum. Height 13 ¼" Reserve $150
039. C.1900, American Cast Iron "Dog House" novelty clock with original 30 hour fit-up movement, clean and running. This model is always popular with dog lovers. The dog is setting in the doorway of his house, which is under the shade of 4 large sunflowers. Excellent detail on the casting. Ht 11" Reserve $150
040. C.1855, E. & A. Ingraham, Round Dial clock, with restorations. The bezel has been sprayed gold, and the hinge replaced; dial professionally repainted {very nice job}. No label. Original "east-west" movement is clean and running. In all original condition this would be worth $500. Height 15.5" Reserve $175
041. C.1915, Chelsea, for American Steam Gauge and Valve Mfg Co, Boston, U.S.A., 6 inch dial timepiece, with vernier adjustment for F/S. The engraved dial clearly identifies the origin of this clock. The heavy cast brass case with hinged bezel is in good condition. Marine and steam collectors should find this a desirable clock. Runs; diam = 7.4" Reserve $400
042. C.1910, Seth Thomas, "Empire No. 307" crystal regulator in very good condition. The top of the brass case is oxidized and needs polishing, but the clock is otherwise complete and sound with premium round #48-N movement in running order. Signed Seth Thomas porcelain dial is perfect, and with original hands and pendulum. Height 9 ½" Reserve $250
043. C.1950 {modern} German reissue Dresden Porcelain china clock in very good condition. These delicate floral cases generally do not fare well, but this one retains its flowers and buds in very good nick {only very minor edge chips on a few petals}. The original "floating balance" movement strikes the hours on two brass bells in "ding-dong" fashion. Although the movement is running and striking, it is a bit sluggish and may require service for long term operation.. Still, the case is a work of art and very attractive. Height 14" Reserve $200
044. C.1875, F. Kroeber, New York, cast bronze alarm clock in very good as-found condition. This clock has been in storage and the bronze is oxidized, however, it appears to be in great original condition. The movement is dirty, but sound and complete – will require service before operation. The fanciful bronze façade has a spread eagle at top, then flowers on the left and fruit on the right, and a gargoyle below. The right and left feet are two winged lions. The #6 porcelain signet has a small chip [not bad], the other 11 are perfect. Typical Kroeber quality; signed movement. Height 13" Reserve $400
045. C.1850, Brewster & Ingrahams, Ripple edge cottage in good condition. Signature on original dial is weak but legible; chapter ring is original and clear. Case was refinished long ago. Inside label is excellent. Minute hand repaired and could be improved. 8-day. Ht 14" Reserve $250
046. C.1910, Japan, "Utility Model No. 12298", an oak cased "mirror" clock, given by students, to their teacher with deep appreciation for the knowledge imparted. The presentation is written in cuneiform, around the oval beveled mirror. Also with original brass plaque indicating serial number 28558. The open spring movement with unusual, visible "balance on dial". Also you can adjust hairspring for fast/slow right on the balance support, when you wind and set the hands. Height 16" Reserve $275
047. C.1938, Seth Thomas, Ship’s Strike Clock and Barometer set. Seth Thomas offered a similar set, merchandised as "Shipmates" and also "Regatta" BUT they substituted hinged, button latch bezels instead of the screw-ons used with the individual items – a fact realized by the mariner that bought these. The jeweled movement "wheel" bezel clock is running, but would benefit from service, and the matching barometer bears the maker’s brand "Taylor", which Seth Thomas had labeled with their name after World War II. See 1996 Seth Thomas book, page 386 for illustration. The wheels measure 8"; the well finished walnut mount is 24" high. Note someone refinished both these cases using sandpaper, and they will need polishing. Reserve $400
048. C.1948, Toyo Watch Co., Occupied Japan {signed movement}, Bird-in-Cage, annular dial timepiece with original stand. The chrome stand has some loss of chrome, but is otherwise intact. The movement ticks & stops, and would benefit form cleaning. These little novelties were made in both Germany and Japan at the time, but this is the first one we’ve had with the "occupied" stamp on the movement. Clock = 5", stand = 11" Reserve $175
049. C.1910, German, copy of 18th Century elephant theme, with the clock as "cargo" atop the elephant’s back. The 30 hour fit-up movement is dirty and lacking set stem and loop from winding stem, otherwise complete and sound. The spelter elephant has a patinated bronze finish which is worn on some edges, but there are no breaks in the casting. Cute novelty. Height 8.5" Reserve $150
050. C.1880, Jerome & Co., New Haven, REGISTER Hanging Calendar clock {perpetual} in walnut. Note the bottom 3 inches of trim are missing {square molding and a semi-circle}, but the rest of the case is intact. The hinges are loose on the inner doors. The original dials are fabulous. Rear label intact. I am unsure if there was ever an interior cover over the calendar mechanism; there is no evidence of one. Generally speaking this is an uncommon calendar that needs only minor restoration; height as shown 28" Reserve $700
051. C.1875, Welch, Spring & Co., Forestville. Conn, "Italian No.3" Perpetual calendar shelf clock, with B. B. Lewis {Bristol, Conn} patent calendar mechanism. Although this clock has a couple of veneer chips along the base, the columns are loose, and the lower dial has some crazing around Nov & Dec, it is otherwise a nice, original clock with great labels. You may see documentation of these labels in Tran Ly’s Calendar Clocks [1993], pages 337 & 349. A nice example of this model; ht 19½" Reserve $625
052. C.1913, New Haven "NANSEN" mahogany wall clock with leaded glass door. These came in a series: Neese, Neafus, Nansen & Nason. This one is 8-day time and strike, and is nicely restored with new paper dial. The pendulum needs polishing, but this is otherwise a nice clock. Glass crystal has scratches. Fragments of a rear label remain; leaded glass intact; ht 34.7" Reserve $450
053. C.1887, German, Lenzkirch, Mini Bracket Clock. The well made mahogany case was refinished maybe 20 years ago and has some minor runs in the finish {not bad- would rub out}. The architectural case has solid sides, the top with peaked roof, carved beneath and with Corinthian pilasters either side of the dial. Note rear view to see how this movement fills this little case; original pendulum is out of view. 8-day time and strike movement is signed with Lenzkirch logo and serial #650860; note hands have been replaced and are a bit too long; they fit on hubs OK. Generally in very good condition; height 11½" Reserve $550
054. C.1900, German for the French Market, walnut cased wall regulator with full standing columns on either side of the door and with 7 panes of heavy beveled glass in a leaded frame. The top retains original broken arch crest with center finial and all trim and moldings are original, including a carved leaf finial at the bottom. The cream colored porcelain dial is perfect and all 8 rods are intact. A heavy & well made French wall clock, xlnt. Height 38" Reserve $350
055. C.1905, Swiss, Japy Freres {signed on movement, dial, bracket and gong}, walnut cased wall regulator. This is a well made clock in the Alt Deutsch style. The old top looks perfect on this clock, but is not original; has been glued and nailed on. Center finial has been broken off and reglued. The silvered dial is slightly oxidized, but the numerals are still clear, plus has 13-24 numbers as well. Well made square movement with rod strike. I have not seen a Sun Burst pendulum on this era wall clock before, but it appears to be original {with central bust and flowing hair}. Stabilizer bases there, but stabilizers missing; overall very good. Height 39" Reserve $400
056. C.1895, French Windmill Clock, the fan driven by the striking mechanism, mounted separately in the tower of the clock. This particular clock lost its fan at some time and a workman borrowed a sample to form a mold and cast a new one from lead. The net result is that the fan weights around 3 ounces when it should be thin stamped brass and weigh around an ounce… and so it turns rather lazily and unreliably. The rest of the clock appears to be original and sound and both movements run; small chip in porcelain dial at 3. Ht 16" Reserve $2300
057. C.1905. Swiss, Japy Freres, Walnut Wall regulator in the Alt Deutsch style. Other than two small buttons, and finial tip that are missing from the top piece, this is about as good as it gets. A nice all original spring regulator with rod strike, long door and Corinthian columns, plus the original finish…. even stabilizers are present. The well made Japy Freres movement, with serial number 31130 runs and strikes, but would benefit from service. Nice color and detail. Height 47" Reserve $450
058. C.1900, German, L Furtwangler & Sohne {LFS}, a Berlin style free swinger with superior grade movement and porcelain dial. The one minor problem is the missing suspension spring, which is a unique item with bottom hook on this model; the leader, crutch and pendulum are all intact, just the suspension spring is missing. The clock is otherwise complete and sound with great pendulum with cherub center and the hands are ornate 3-dimensional jobs. Old top has been repaired and has a new plaster "Diana". Inside gong base pulled out of back in transit and will need new screws. Minor nicks and scrapes to case; original finish; generally very good overall. Height 37" Reserve $525
059. C.1920, Ansonia "Mahogany Swing No. 2" in excellent condition. The case was professionally refinished some time ago, and has a deep red-brown color. The silvered dial is untouched and original, as are the hands and all hardware. Height 23¼" Reserve $4100
060. C.1901, Ansonia Royal Bonn "La Roche" Porcelain china clock in very good original condition. This clock is from a local home and is quite dirty, however, the dial is perfect {a big plus}, and this is a desirable Louis XVI pattern. The color is a muted gray-blue, with yellow and violet iris covering both front and sides. The gold highlights show wear from regular dusting. Although it will tick, the movement will need cleaning for reliable operation. Height 13½" Reserve $800
061. C.1900, Ansonia Royal Bonn "La Tosca" in popular tri-color motif, dark aqua-blue at top, down to yellow in the center and dark green at the bottom. The open ‘scape dial is perfect, as is the case. The dial and movement need cleaning, but this is otherwise an exceptional clock, sure to attract a lot of interest. We sold the "sister" to this clock, October 1998, lot 315, for $1500+10%. Height 14 ½" Reserve $1000
062. C.1880, French, 4-Column Empire mantel clock. The dial has several chips and hairlines, but is still legible; suspension spring has failed [$2]. The clock is otherwise quite impressive, with brass and shell inlay on all front surfaces, and every edge accented with gilt brass repousse` trim. Has a quality Japy bell strike movement, original to the case, running but dusty and in need of cleaning. Note fine pressed vine trim on all 4 barley twist columns. A lot of look for the money and sure to attract interest at this reserve. Height 20" Reserve $500
063. C.1880, French, 4-Column Empire mantel clock, profusely decorated with repousse` pressed brass trim, and in excellent original condition. The suspension spring failed in transit. Well made round French movement is original to the case and numbered 893 and with matching number on pendulum. Pendulum with a cherub and dog in center and the grid flanked by two standing cherubs. Small chip in dial by right winding hole {not objectionable}. See fine pressed vine trim on all 4 barley twist columns, and note top has a little warp that might need sanding flat again. This is about the flashiest of these I’ve seen. Ht 21" Reserve $650
064. C.1875, French, 4-Column Empire mantel clock, complete with original dome and base. Note marquetry inlay on clock matches inlay on base and the old rectangular dome fits both perfectly. Someone soldered on a suspension spring with acid flux solder and there is a little corrosion on the outside of the movement that needs cleaning in addition to new susp spring. The quality Japy bell strike movement is otherwise complete and sound. Minute hand repaired {OK}, minor chip in dial below 6 is not objectionable. Columns are barley twist. A very eye catching piece with the dome. Height 24" Reserve $800
065. C.1875, French, 4-Column Empire mantel clock in good running order. The consignor just had the movement professionally cleaned and it has been running and striking here in the office. There are some chips in the veneer all around the case, but none really glaring {see top right edge of base in photo}. The well made bell strike movement is numbered simply 194, and with a gridiron pendulum with cast rose in the center; original hands, and neat gilt dial with engine turned pattern. If you overlook the small cosmetic blemishes, this is a clock that can be enjoyed from the start. With key. Height 18" Reserve $600
066. Mid 19th Century, French, 4-Column Empire mantel clock, with attractive amboyna wood veneer and brightly gilded mounts {some veneer chips to case}. While doing the inspection we noticed the verge was so worn that it was skipping an extra tooth every now and then, and will need professional attention. Moreover, there’s and extra set of dial feet holes in the dial plate, probably indicating a change of movement at some time. The bezel and dial are original to the case, the dial signed Roblin Hrs, a Paris; the well made "Vincenti & Cie" movement is repairable. Clock is slightly smaller than previous lots; would have been $1500 if all correct. Ht 16" Reserve $600
067. C.1904, Ansonia Clock Co., "Viceroy" Crystal Regulator with matching candelabra. Negatives first: the top urn on the clock is slightly bent [not broken], and the entire set has been heavily sprayed with gold radiator paint. Now on the plus side, this is one of the best looking sets we’ve seen in a while, and the spelter trim appears to be 100% intact, no missing bits nor corners. The open ‘scape movement is in good order, with good dial {one minor hairline at 9:30} and with original faux mercury pendulum, vials intact. The heavy beveled glass is all in good condition. This clock set is worthy of a good refinishing or plating job. Height of candelabra = 16 ½" {includes both fancy snuffers}, height of clock 16" The modest reserve is for all 3 pieces: $600
068. C.1990, German, Triple Chime {8-rod) wall clock in quarter sawn oak, with burled elm accents. We debated whether to put this in or not, since it is modern, but felt the beginners might be attracted to an inexpensive clock with lots of sound. This well made German movement plays your choice of Whittington, St. Michaels or Westminster, and seems to be running OK. Height 22" Reserve $200
069. C.1930, French, Art Deco mantel clock. This is one of the most classic examples of Depression era Deco we’ve seen in a while: a large {and heavy} oval of black marble, the clock in a brass sphere resting in the curl of a wave, the whole surmounted by a large soaring bird. The finish has some fine pitting [not bad] that shows its age, and the movement is dirty, but sound and complete. The bird and wave are patinated bronze over white metal. Both the marble and the casting are signed by the aratist: M. Leducg. This clock is a real work of art. Ht 23" Reserve $450
070. C.1900, French Musician figural clock set, patinated bronze over white metal, mounted to a black marble pedestal with red/brown onyx trim. This is a large and heavy clock with fine detail; the musician’s hair, face and costume with great clarity. He is taking a break, and his mandolin is setting beside him The porcelain dial has some hairlines and a small chip by right winding hole; quality French movement complete, and would benefit from cleaning. Each candelabra with holders for 5 candles, in good condition. Note statue will be separated from base for shipment. Height 21" Reserve $600
071. C.1900, French Red Porcelain & Bronze Clock Set with matching candelabra. This is a very attractive set, all surfaces covered with gold fleur-de-lis, with white petals above, and alternating rows of gold stars. The well made round French movement with matching number pendulum. The porcelain dial has attractive stylized numerals, and a small hairline by 3 [no chips]. Each candelabra with holders for 5 candles, and with matching bases, feet and teardrops [all bronze]. Overall excellent; no cracks – minor edge abrasion in rear; great looking. Height 22" Reserve $750
072. C.1895, French, Figural Set "Mignon" {orig by Moreau}, with signed plaque, and with matching side urns, each with a winged cherub, arms outstretched. These are patinated bronze over white metal, in excellent condition, and with mottled red and white marble bases. The well made bell-strike, round French movement is signed Societe Cluseinne, and retains good porcelain dial with polychrome floral decorations. Ms. Mignon is loosely clad in a low cut dress, with mandolin in her lap. Ht 19.5" Reserve $600
073. C.1910, German, for the French market, a very attractive Art Nouveau 3-piece porcelain and bronze set. The movement itself is a 30-hour open spring job {ticks fine}, but this clock was sold for its artistic appeal. See the bright gold tulips and soft flowing lines so typical of the Noveau movement {one with slight wear from dusting}. The porcelain is white and we tried shooting it against black, but it looked dead; it is better looking than the image. Each candelabra with holders for 5 candles, and with bases and feet matching the clock; note both snuffers are present. Height 23" Reserve $700
074. C.1900, French, Black Marble & Onyx 3-Piece mantel set {with bronze trim}. The bronze feet pulled off in transit and we had to glue in new studs [looks OK]. Note this clock retains original gilding in the incised pattern, and all the bronze decoration is intact. Quality round French movement strikes the hours on a bell and the porcelain dial has fancy trefoil trim between the numerals and in the dial center [dial perfect]. These sets were not cheap when new, and they are "under" appreciated. Ht 17.5" Reserve $350
075. C.1880, French, Portico Mantel Set, Marble & Bronze in the style of a century earlier, and in good condition. One of the column bases [bronze] has a fracture that is not too noticeable, and the top trim has been broken and repaired [decent rivet job]. The white marble is nicely molded with a bow front base on both the clock and urns, and all bronze feet are intact. The well made French movement is signed "Paris Make, France", retains original pendulum and the bezel number matches the movement. Has a porcelain dial that is good except for a small chip by the F/S stud, and with colorful polychrome floral trim and original fancy hands. The side pieces are solid marble with ormolu trim; one ‘wing’ is loose. Height 16" Reserve $650
076. C.1880, French, Portico Mantel Clock, Marble & gilt bronze in the style of a century earlier, and in very good condition. The only small shortcoming which would bother a purist is the pendulum, which is a GREAT crystal regulator pendulum with a ring of brilliants and a cast button in the center, all with original frosty gilding. We would pay $100 for the pendulum alone if it were separate. {This clock would have had a sunburst pendulum} The rest of the clock is very clean, the bell strike movement running and with a perfect porcelain dial with floral polychrome center. All the marble is sound with no chips nor cracks and all the ormolu trim is intact. Overall excellent. Height 15" Reserve $500
077. C.1890, French, Portico Mantel Set, White marble & gilt bronze in the style of Louis XVI. This is a nice set, the well made round movement signed "H&C Paris". Retains a perfect porcelain dial with floral wreath decorations, and fancy gilt hands. The movement runs but would benefit from cleaning. The side garnitures are intact, one with small chips in rear that do not show. Overall very good condition. Height 18" Reserve $700
078. C.1900, French, "LE RAISIN", figural clock set with side garnitures. Interestingly, the title {cast into the base} translates to "The Grape", while it is clear that cherubic angel is presenting the lady with a whole basket full of freshly picked grapes. The well made round French movement is signed Societe Clusienne, and with matching number pendulum. The porcelain dial is good and with a small floral decoration. All pieces set on dark pink veined marble, the clock base with a small chip at the right front corner. The patinated bronze over white metal finish has some wear in the high spots but is overall in very good condition; one small break on the lip of the left urn {both pieces there}. Height 14 ½" Reserve $550
079. C.1900, French, Love, figural clock set with side garnitures. A beautiful young lady with pensive face holds a quiver of arrows, tied with a garland, which have been dropped by cupid, standing off to the left, an arrow in his right hand. This is a lovely motif and the bronzed white metal retains original finish in outstanding condition. The well made round, bell strike movement is running and striking, but would benefit from service. The dark pink veined marble bases match perfectly on all 3 pieces, and the urns, decorated profusely with garlands and a cherub, would hold a large candle if desired. Note all pieces are quite heavy and you will think it is bronze when you pick it up. A very impressive mantel clock set {safe shipping will require partial disassembly}. Height 20" Reserve $700
080. C.1915, Swiss, Le Castel Clock Co., St. Aubin, reproduction of a classic 18th C. Neuchatel clock, with bracket. This is a well made clock, with porcelain dial [margin chip does not show with door closed]. The well made Swiss movement has brushed plates and refinements like a spring loaded bell standard to avoid breakage. The cast brass hands are nicely tooled. But the most outstanding feature is the Vernis Martin style gold leaf applique, on both the front and sides of both clock and bracket; original patina with lots of alligatoring. A period piece would cost you dearly; this one with reasonable reserve; clock = 20", height [total] 28" Reserve $800
081. C.1895, Ansonia CAPITOL wall regulator in mahogany, and in clean, restored condition, running. Note top center finial and all 3 bottom finials are new and not correct profile {they look OK, just not right}. Paper dial is a proper professional replacement, with Ansonia trademark. Beat scale intact. Double spring 8-day time only. Height 54" Would be $1100 if perfect. Reserve $575
082. C.1855, Atkins, Whiting & Co., Bristol, Conn., Drop Octagon wall clock with 30-day wagon spring movement. This clock is in very good condition. There is minor touch-up on the dial round the center hole. Retains original hands, bezel, tablet, & pendulum. The case retains original finish, but the very bottom left return has been re-veneered [barely noticeable], and a couple of glue joints are loose; both ivory door knobs intact. We had trouble getting this off the wall because the owner had screwed the clock to the wall from the inside {so couple of extra holes are there.} See this model in Palmer’s Treasury of American Clocks, page 102, and also in Ken Robert’s book on Ives, page 286-7, detailing Ives patent "Pony Shoe" movement. See lot 316 in Nov’99 sale, which was bid to $2500. Movement photo, American Clock & Watch Museum. Height 24.5" Reserve $2000
083. C.1949, Chelsea Clock Co., "Terry" model pillar and scroll mantel clock. This clock comes with the original sales slip from Longs Jeweler’s, dated 1949 in the amount of $270 {roughly $2500 in today’s dollars}. The scrolls got knocked off and have been reglued {OK job but you can tell on inspection}, and there are other nicks and scrapes. Escutcheon around door lock missing too. The movement appears to have been serviced and it is running and striking. Retains original Chelsea key and finials. In pristine condition, I would expect this to bring around $900; our reserve reflects condition; ht 25" Reserve $500
084. C.1904, Ansonia clock Co., "BON TON" mini eight day carriage clock in good condition. The last owner very carefully polished off the weak gilding to copper underneath, and this red-metallic look is really not bad looking. The porcelain dial and beveled glass are perfect; nice miniature collectible. Height with handle up 5 ½" Reserve $200
085. C.1894, Ansonia Cast Figural Clock "Mercury" in good, as-found condition. This clock had been in storage, and we had to scrub off the fly spots. The bronze finish has long been absent, but the spelter itself has an antique look. Note the left wing on Mercury’s helmet is bent {but not broken}. The movement is complete and sound and the porcelain dial is absolutely perfect. Original fancy cast hands intact as well. Height 15" Worth $750 if perfect. Modest reserve $300
086. C.1890, French {yes}, R-A Style Walnut wall regulator in the German Alt Deutsch style. Note this clock retains original heavy machined brass mount for the movement as well as a French style gong and pendulum. The heavy and well made movement is drilled on the rear plate for 3-point back mount, but shows no evidence the holes were ever used. Has Brocot escapement and fancy porcelain dial with bronze center trim. Suspension spring is barely holding and will need replacing. The case retains original top and bears a few wood worm holes and moldings & bottom have been re-glued, case refinished. No side stabilizers. Looks good. Height 37" Reserve $250
087. C.1914, Seth Thomas, "Chime Clock No. 16" 4-bell Sonora Chime, in excellent original condition, both movements professionally cleaned and in good running order. These large Sonoras have great tone, owing to the large echo chamber. 8" silvered dial, the chime movement wound from near 3 o’clock. There are minor edge nicks and dings to the case, but it still retains original finish and is very good. Original pendulum and key. Ready to enjoy. Height 18" Reserve $500
088. C.1950, Seth Thomas "MEDBURY" Westminster chime tambour clock in excellent original condition. This post war model still uses the #124, 3 train chime movement and chimes the quarter hours on straight steel rods. With original finish, dial, hands, etc, running and chiming. Original label intact. Ht 9½" Reserve $150
089. C.1930, Seth Thomas, Ship’s Wheel #66, with 6 inch dial, 10 ¾" overall. Case is heavy cast brass with screw bezel. This larger model is uncommon, as most of these that surface are the Ship’s Wheel #44 with 4 ½" dial. The retail price of this clock in 1930 was $65. Details on Seth Thomas’ extensive line of ship’s bell clocks can be found in the Winter 1981 issue of The Timepiece Journal, published by the American Clock & Watch Museum. This is an outstanding example of this model clock. Reserve = $400
089a. C.1942 {dated}, Chelsea for U.S.Navy, serial number 25663, MARK I DECK CLOCK, complete with original wall bracket. Other than normal discoloration of the luminous hands and hour markers, this clock is in outstanding condition, and in good running order. Dial = 6" bakelite, case = 8 ½" Reserve $250
090. C.1960 {contemporary}, Miniature Howard banjo clock. This clock case was made by Vinnie Versarge, from solid rosewood, and with hand painted and gold-leafed tablets. It uses a Waltham key wound desk clock movement, just like the Waltham models. The proportions on this clock are true to the originals, and with button latch bezels, top and bottom. Although it is not antique, this certainly is an alternative to the nice miniature clocks currently produced by Wayne Cline in Kentucky. Height 14" Reserve $500
091. C.1935, Waltham Mini Banjo with 8-day key wind movement. This clock is in mustard yellow with green pin striping and balls, and with finely detailed "castle" tablets. It is 100% original and sure to please the most discriminating Waltham collector. 21" Reserve = $500
092. C.1930, Waltham Mini Banjo, Rope Front presentation, with a mahogany case. This clock has the original Mayflower tablet and has 50 years of grime and patina around the brass "rope". This has a stem-wind/set version of the popular 8-day lever movement. A 100% original clock in very good condition. Ht 21" Reserve = $500
093. C.1850, Smith & Goodrich, Bristol, Conn, Sub-mini 30 hour round band in good condition. The case has been refinished and there are some cracks and bubbles in the veneer [not bad, but there]. Retains original dial [numerals strengthened long ago], and an xlnt label. Best part is the great geometric tablet in white, dark pink and green. Interestingly, the bottom left corner of the door was originally inlet for the hinge [on the wrong side]; the wood is aged nicely and a hinge was never installed; improper hands. See also lots 109 and 114 onward for additional fusees. Height 15" Reserve $600
094. C.1850, Chauncey Jerome, New Haven, Conn, 8-day Fusee drop octagon, chisel bottom. This is a nice early school clock; see movement image and compare to Ken Robert’s book on Ives, page 260. The movement is virtually identical, except for different shaped fusees. Note also original card label in bottom. There a couple of minor chips to the veneer around the top margin, but nothing that cannot be dealt with. The dial has been touched-up lightly around the attaching holes, but is ORIGINAL, including bottom margin signature of C. Jerome. Note also unique SIDE opening door for pendulum access and strike adjustment. Height 22½" Reserve $1000
095. C.1900, English, for the Dutch market, miniature stoelklok, the case of hallmarked silver, and the quality exceptional. Note the finely engraved detail to the case and the perfect proportions, including the chain, a mini pulley and mini pendulum as well. The movement is an English 1-day lever movement, which is complete but will need attention; porcelain dial and gold hands are perfect. This is a lovely decorative item. I remember one of these changing hands in the 1970s for more than the reserve on this one. Height 6½" Reserve $600
096. C.1900, English, for the Dutch market, mini Dutch tall clock in a bombay base case and with 3 jacks on top. The English fusee/verge movement used to provide timekeeping is absent its hands and the crystal is broken. Still this is a little jewel, the case covered on all sides with Dutch port & street scenes, the door with tiny little angels, and the case hallmarked on the rear. Note outstanding enamel dial with windmill and church w/ steeple. The watch is complete {except for hands}, but not running. Enjoy as-is. Ht 9 ¾" Reserve $825
097. C.1910, Swiss, a Ladies Musical Boudoir clock, silvered and gilt brass, profusely engraved and with filigree and semi-precious stones and pearls on all 4 sides and the top. The clock {watch] movement has been changed, and the old dial held to the later movement with licorice chewing gum {just when I thought I had seen everything}. The musical movement is sound and plays a lively tune on demand. As a decorative item, this certainly wins first prize in the "extravagant" category. If you are a watchmaker, you can deal with the movement and dial. Height 7" Reserve $2200
098. C.1924, Swiss, Gilded Silver & Enamel clock on a gray marble base. The silver gilt case with serpentine top, beaded bezel and engine patterned, striped back, all pieces with English import hallmarks for the year 1924, plus the maker’s mark "G.S., HA St, Geneve", probably George Stockwell. The well made 2-train 8-day Swiss movement striking the hours and halves on a gong. The finely detailed porcelain dial panel unsigned, but of Limoge quality, depicting 2 scantily clad nymphs, dancing in a garden, beneath a metallic orange sky, and with an applied gilt chapter ring, 2.5" in diameter. This is a relatively small clock, only 9" high, and would have been an extremely expensive gift for a lady in 1924. Runs; 9" Reserve $6500
098-a C.1950, Swiss, JUST, 30-Day specialty desk clock of the highest quality. Has a quality jeweled lever movement with a giant spring wound with a large T-handle key. The hand painted arched dial depicting a medieval feast in grand fashion with knights on horses in the background. The arch depicts a non-working calendar and is discreetly signed "Just". The art brass art deco numerals are attached around the margin of the dial. This is a heavy clock, 12 pounds with key, and is made to last a lifetime. Gilt brass case with gilding worn on top and edges, but generally in very good condition. Height 10½" [27cm] Reserve $2200
098-b C.1930, Swiss, Lemania, in the style of Cartier, classic Art Deco desk clock in jade and pink quarts, each piece mounted in silver, and accented with inlaid blue cobalt enamel. Has a good 8-day Swiss lever movement, in running order. Retains original dial and hands throughout. The numerals and hands no longer luminesce, however the paint is all intact and has not flaked off as is so common. A small clock of very high quality; height 4¼" [11cm] Reserve $2000
099. C.1923, French, Bardon Clichy, another rare electric [battery] clock. Manufactured by Establissements Bardon, 61 Blvd National, Clichy, Seine, France. The well made square movement is advanced by a one-way ratchet system from the rear, the pendulum acting on the ratchet with each swing. At the same time electrical contact energizes a coil in the base, which in turn repulses the pendulum, a heavy iron horse-shoe shaped unit with a cast ormolu front and back, and with a knurled rating nut in the center of the bob, clearly labeled for ‘R’ and ‘A’. The movement and pendulum with matching serial number. The 4-glass case [beveled] in excellent condition and with original knurled feet [4] for final adjustment and leveling of the clock. Note suspension spring and electrical contacts will need attention prior to operation of the clock. Additional information and photo of this clock may be seen in NAWCC Bulletin #227, 1983, page 761; the first record extant of this clock being marketed is dated January 1923, and an illustrated advertisement by the Company can be found in L’Horloger for November 1924. No battery. Ht 13" [33cm]. Reserve $1500
100. C.1905, English, EverReady Battery Co., Timepiece, patented by Robert Scott, Bradford, Yorkshire. Approximately 500 of these were made before the clock was discontinued, and very few remain today. See similar clock we sold in November of 1997, lot 324. This current clock has terminals for an external battery, but never had the battery box below that the ’97 clock had. Moreover, this clock retains the original beveled glass cover with nickeled brass corners and mahogany top – note beveled mirror at rear has single horizontal crack. The movement is complete, but will need service and adjustment of the toggle. For a complete description of this clock, see Electrifying Time, catalog from the electric clock exhibition held at the Science Museum, London. Note pendulum moves from front to back. Ht 15" We expect bidding interest on this clock well above the reserve of $1500
101. C.1960, English, "Rolling Ball" Clock. The power transmitted via a large fusee, the timekeeping governed by a steel ball rolling on a grooved table, releasing a latch at the end of its travel, allowing the train to advance while the table tilts to the opposite end and the ball re-traces its original path in the other direction. The time is indicated on three elevated dials, minutes in the center, hours to the left and seconds to the right. Not pictured are a sturdy plexi-glass cover and a polished black marble base; very high quality throughout. Height of clock 14", with cover and base 17½". Reserve $3600
102. C.1890, Ansonia "Imogene" Black Enameled iron clock in excellent original condition. Note this clock has the gilt hard rubber dial, {see Ansonia book, models Milan and Russia}. Movement is clean and running. The accent figure of "Buffalo Bill" Cody looks very good on this clock [figures were a 2 dollar option at the time]. Height, less figure 10 ½", together 17" Reserve $300
103. C.1905, Waterbury Blue Delft china clock in generally good condition. Note the rear dust cover has been replaced with a home-made affair that has created some small chips in the rear opening. There are no cracks in the case, and it is profusely decorated with blue transfers of Dutch themes. The 8-day movement is clean and running; porcelain dial is good. A good looking clock Height 12" Reserve $350
104. C.1880, Swiss, Ceremonial Watch in gilt bronze stand. The little "temple" is divided into 4 quadrants, and with a little tray at the bottom for holding small items. Two views are provided to show the layout. The key wind, key set movement is fully shuttered from the rear, and ticks and stops. The porcelain dial is in good condition and retains original hands. We hope someone will recognize the original purpose of this well made item. Ht 6¼" Reserve: $175
105. C.1935, Warren Telechron, Ashland, Mass, Refrigerator in good running order. The fridge itself was repainted in 1975 when the current owner had the clock serviced, and a modern cord installed {with original female plug for the clock}. There are minor chips to the paint, and some dirt in the corners since 1975. The 110 volt motor runs quietly. This novelty clock is certain to attract attention. Height 7¾" Reserve $150
106. C.1843, Elisha Manross, Bristol, Conn, 8-Day Faux Hollow column, 2-wt. This is an uncommon hollow column, in that the columns are full round, rather than half columns that Manross also made. The movement achieves 8-day duration by using the "tombstone" cutouts of the main plates as the "feet" below [riveted on], to allow for installation of an extra arbor and gear. Manross circumvented the Noble Jerome strike patent by moving the count wheel up to the #3 position, just below the governor fan. Note the weights descend in narrow channels either side of the movement. The shortcomings follow: the original dial has been drilled [4 holes] and screwed in place; bottom tablet new {nicely painted}, small chip in center of mirror; label split and with water stain, but still quite legible. Generally very good condition. Height 33½" Reserve $450
107. C.1877 {Pat. 1877}, H. J. Davies, New York, brass cased carriage clock with alarm, as-found. This heavy cast brass case and handle is very unusual for this time period, apparently Davies’ attempt to provide the "feel" of French carriage clocks. Moreover, he mounted the Connecticut spring movement to a large iron bracket which provided additional weight. Despite its’ large size and ‘hefty’ feel, the clock runs for only a day. The paper dial has dark stains and with edge flakes; lacks alarm hand. Unusual; ht 7½" Reserve $150
108. C.1845, Terry & Andrews, 30-Hour, Brass spring steeple {time spring now steel}, with Terry style alarm and excellent label. The Fenn type tablet with balloonist is also original, but with wear; you can just about make out the entire design. The case was refinished long ago and there are a few veneer chips along the edges, but this clock is otherwise in very good original condition. Height 19" Reserve $225
109. C.1850, Chauncey Jerome, 8-Day Fusee shelf clock in good original condition. The case has a couple of veneer chips, but overall the floral marquetry is of high quality and attractive. The painted dial has some flakes near 3 and 8, and would respond to minor touch up. The hinged brass bezel has a button latch typical of these early cases; the minute hand is an old replacement and a bit too short. Case made by Holloway & Co., London. Height 15" Reserve $275
110. C.1881, Wm. L. Gilbert "Office Drop Calendar" as-found. This clock is in excellent running and striking order and the paper/card dial is one of the nicest I’ve ever seen; date hand moves automatically; day name and month are moved manually at the end of each month. The minus is the bottom carved trim that was lost and replaced with a flat piece of walnut; drawings are available if you have a wood carver. Interior label mostly gone; rear label OK. The walnut veneer on the top bezel is excellent. See Ly’s book on calendar clocks, page 94 for additional details on how Gilbert circumvented Maranville’s patent on this dial configuration. Worth $1700 if it had the bottom carving. Height 34" Reserve $900
111. C.1900, Seth Thomas "GALLERY", 30-Day, with 18 inch dial and in good restored condition. The mahogany case is in excellent condition and retains all original hardware, hanger, hinges, etc. The only negative is the dial which was repainted about 25 years ago by an inexperienced painter who did an OK, but not great, job of lettering the dial. This can be corrected by any of the professional dial services. These large "dial" clocks are hard to find. Movement is in good running order and with original hands. Height 25 ½" Reserve $1000
112. C.1894, Ansonia "Swing No. 2", Novelty swinging doll clock in good original condition. The clock was dropped at some time and there is a small dent [flat spot] along the lower left edge of the brass case. The paper dial is excellent, but the best part is the original standing doll, dressed in white jacket & pants with blue trim {could be either boy or girl}, with both arms grasping the rope of the swing. The bisque doll is absolutely flawless, yet shows just the right amount of dirt for the age. Height 8" Reserve $1500
113. C.1870, E. N. Welch Mfg. Co., Forestville, Conn, rosewood beehive with signed 8-day time and strike movement, and with large floor mount alarm movement in the base. Glasses are original, the tablet of lion and unicorn with central paint loss [where pendulum bob probably rubbed]. Xlnt original label Good original dial with paint loss above the 12 and a scratch by 7. The veneer is generally good with a couple of chips on the base molding and the very bottom molding of the door. Ht 19" Reserve $300
114. C.1850, Chauncey Jerome, 8-day Fusee, Cottage clock in very good original condition. Note signed movement retains original winding stops on both sides. The case retains flashy decoration {with 1/3 loss of mother of pearl}. The glass has been replaced and is loose. This model never had a label; cleaned and running Height 13" Reserve $400
115. C.1845, Smith & Goodrich, Sub-miniature OOG, in very good condition. The well figured mahogany veneer is in very good shape and was attractively refinished some time ago. See further details on this movement in Ken Robert’s book on Ives {1970}, pages 246-247. The glasses are both old and the lower tablet has been professionally restored [a magnificent job]. The dial is period, but may not be original to this clock [fits OK, but not perfect]; case retains wonderful full label. Note height is only 15.4" Neat clock. Reserve $500
116. C.1850, Chauncey Jerome, 8-day Fusee, Cottage clock in very good original condition. Signed movement has been re-cabled with woven brass and is running; retains winding stops on both arbors. The original dial pan has been nicely repainted except for improper signature of "Jerome & Co" [a later division of New Haven Clock Co.] The best parts are the superb original stenciling, painted scene on lower plinth and profuse inlays with ground MOP, all remarkably well preserved Sister to lot 114; height 13" Reserve $450
117. C.1848, J. C. Brown Beehive with ripple door in mahogany, and in excellent original condition. The dial retains original signature, has some spots, and some touch-up outside the chapter ring [dial is a bit dark]. Glasses are both old and cut glass bottom tablet has a nice wreath pattern. See further details on this 8-day movement in Ken Robert’s book on Ives {1970}, pages 252-255 [fig 82-b shows movement in acorn case]. This model movement winds at 3 and 9. The label is complete and legible, and with dark stains along bottom edge; height 19" Reserve $1250
118. C.1847, Chauncey Boardman, Fusee Steeple, in a well figured mahogany case, and with signed 30 hour fusee movement. See Ken Roberts book on Ives, pages 244-45, for details on this 1847 patent Boardmen & Wells movement. See label image which looks light around the Boardman name because a previous owner very carefully peeled off the Daniel Pratt overpasted label {it is included}. The two glasses are original and the lower tablet is s superb scene of a castle and moat. The case is great, except for minor veneer chips along the base; original dial with paint loss in corners. Ht 19.75" Reserve $450
119. C.1848, J. C. Brown, Bristol, Conn, 8-Day Steeple Clock in very good+ original condition. An excellent mahogany case with early cone finials. Signed J C Brown movement, and original signed dial {sig faint}, and a Fenn type frosted tablet {some loss of design, and it looks nearly clear in photo}; label is good, with some holes and stain along the bottom. A nice steeple; height 19.75" Reserve $450
120. C.1847, J. C. Brown, Bristol, Conn, 8-Day Steeple clock in mahogany and in excellent condition. Has a great "flower basket" cut out tablet that may be replaced, but was certainly done long ago. The clock has a signed time and strike movement, original signed dial with good signature, and full label {black on green}. Certainly a welcome offering compared to what we find for steeple clocks today. Old spires may be later. Height 19 ½" Reserve $500
121. C.1860, Bradley & Hubbard "ADMIRAL" Blinking Eye clock. This is above average for what we find today, except both left corners of iron base have gotten chipped off, and some one has painted over the face. The paint is otherwise 90% original {with crazing and some flaking}. The movement, dial, bezel and eyes are original and the clock is working [but would benefit from service]. Note the Admiral is less often seen than the Continental; if not for the base and face, this would be a $3000 clock; height 16" Reserve $1100
122. C.1920, Seth Thomas "Office No. 11" in oak, and in outstanding original condition. Original finish, dial and hardware throughout. This is a 30 Day clock, with large double spring movement with Geneva stopwork intact. Although a simple clock in design, they don’t come any nicer. Ht 15 ¼" Reserve $300
123. C.1870, E. Ingraham & Co., "IONIC" wall clock in rosewood and in very good condition. Plain bob is correct with this tablet. On the plus side, the doors retain lively rosewood graining and the sides retain good rosewood veneer. Paper dial shows some wear to the numerals; full label is excellent, plus nice jeweler’s label from Wilmington, Ohio. Note gilt pattern intact on tablet, but black background rubbed off. Ht 22" Reserve $400
124. C.1875, Wm. L. Gilbert "Octagon Drop, Calendar", with restorations. Sides have original rosewood, but the full front has been re-veneered in mahogany, and although stained, could use more finish. 8-day time, strike and calendar movement is in good order, and dial retains original crackled surface. Height 22 ½" Reserve $300
125. C.1890, Yale Clock Co., for George W. M. Reed Bitter Co., New Haven, "Our Grandfather’s Clock". Although the advertising tablet was replaced long ago, and the dial repapered, the case retains its original ebony finish and gilt highlights on the Eastlake style case. Best part is the fabulous rear label…see image. If this clock had the ads, we’d expect it to bring $1000. See also lots 184 and 185 Height 24" Reserve $500
126. C.1830, Ephraim Downes, Bristol, Con, short transitional column & splat with claw feet. Both original glasses, the top with edge crack, the tablet with an unusual painting of 3 birds {about 2/3 gone}. Lee Davis says he has never seen this tablet before and would appreciate a photocopy. The Downes movement has been thoroughly cleaned and is in excellent working order. The case retains original dust board over the pulleys; door with ivory escutcheon and orig lock; label excellent. There is minor damage to the top of the splat, dial with paint loss, and the left chimney top was poorly reglued and needs attention. Overall a very good clock worthy of restoration; height 28" Reserve $450
127. C.1845, Wm. S. Johnson , New York label on mini Fusee "OOG" from Connecticut. The movement is a Chauncey Boardman with riveted frame extensions and seat board. The dial original and the case is in good condition with veneer loss on the outside band [mostly on the bottom band]; the backboard {and label} are split, but none of the label is missing, and it is bright and legible. Both glasses appear original, the lower a mercury backed mirror. Ht 18" Reserve $350
128. C.1910, Seth Thomas, "Empire No. 5" Crystal Regulator in very good condition, with embossed bronze band around the top and bottom {slightly different from earlier #5 with bronze applique}. The gilding is rubbed off in several spots, but is still reasonably bright. Heavy beveled glass is all xlnt, and porcelain dial with poly-chrome wreath décor is perfect. 8-Day movement carries S-T trademark and strikes on a cathedral gong. Height 14" Reserve $450
129. C.1845, Terry & Andrews, Bristol, Conn, Brass spring beehive in good condition. This clock needs some attention: the back is loose in the case surround and needs the screw holes bushed a bit. At some point in its’ life the clock stood too close to a candle and the case back has a candle burn. And the dial has been refinished. On the plus side, the clock retains brass springs, runs well, and has a GREAT original frosted tablet of an Indian with a scythe, and the slogan: "Time cuts down all, both great and small". Old finish has good patina. The label is about ¼ missing; remainder is legible. Height 19" Reserve $400
130. C.1848, J. C. Brown, Forestville, Conn, Full Ripple Beehive in good original condition, except for broken tablet {in 5 pieces, now glued together}. Original dial, but signature is completely wiped off {numerals strengthened some time ago}. Label is very good with water stain and minor paper loss. All ripple intact with no damage. There is 150 years of dirt in the grooves of the ripple – case has never been cleaned. A decent looking clock, that will clean up nicely. Height 18½" Reserve $1000
131. C.1885, German, Gustav Becker, small oak cased mantel clock with bronze mounts. The casting in the arch depicts two cherubs playing musical instruments – the left one with two flutes and the right one with a harp. And the side mounts depict cherubs dancing. The dial is surrounded with a vine type mask of brass with little griffins. The movement is signed with Gustav Becker trademark and with serial number 753368. The 8-day time movement is in good running order. The case has some nicks and scrapes and the 4 block feet are missing. Still neat looking; height 14½" Reserve $625
132. C.1920, Austrian, Mathias Meindl, Burggasse 3, Wien VII., 2-weight Vienna in great Art Deco style. The rosewood case is inlaid with satinwood on all panels. There are 5 panes of beveled glass in the door {one over dial}. The well made Viennese movement strikes on 2 mellow tone rods. The best part is the super geometric damascening on the dial center, weights and pendulum. With original signed beat scale. Of note, there has been a clock shop at Burggasse 3 for well over 100 years. This is AS GOOD AS IT GETS for this time period. Height 40" Reserve $1000
133. C.1907, Gustav Becker, Art Nouveau 2-Wt wall clock in excellent original condition. This clock was consigned by a collector from Holland, and it is in virtual "untouched condition". Movement needs cleaning and re-stringing; pendulum stick has an old repair, right at the very top that can be easily improved; bob retains original lacquer and with no dents nor scratches. Dial and beat scale are perfect; dial signed with G-B trademark. One weight is ever so slightly larger than the other, but not at all noticeable from a distance. The walnut case is 100% original, including finish and case stabilizers. For additional information on this era, see Clocks of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco Style published by Chapter 28 and covering the 1996 Chicago National exhibit. Serial number 2,168,117., +with original wooden handle crank. Height 49 ½" Reserve $1200
134. C.1890 German, Thomas Haller, Schwenningen, 2-weight wall regulator in walnut, Alt Deutsch style. The dial feet are a little loose in the dial plate and need some peening, and the cast brass base mount is a little bent; seconds hand replaced improperly. Otherwise, this is an exceptional clock, with incredible eye appeal, original finish, perfect dial, good hands, and old fish-eye glass in the door. The weights have been dropped and could stand replacing also, however, we encourage you to study the case details AND OF THE NEXT LOT ALSO. It is unusual for us to receive two clocks of the same model, and although there are minor trim differences, you could almost consider these a pair. Minor nicks and scrapes to moldings, but overall very good+ condition; old crank. Small dent in pendulum {not bad}. Movement signed "TH", runs but needs fraying cord replaced. Ht 65½" Reserve $1600
135. C.1900 German, Thomas Haller, Schwenningen, 2-weight wall regulator in dark oak, Alt Deutsch style. This is similar to the previous lot, but in oak, and with later serial number. The dial is a nice multi color job – ivory with black numerals and red fleur-de-lis, and good original hands. There has been restoration to the case; the side stretchers that hold the top and bottom together are new {decent job}, and several of the smaller trim moldings have been replaced {good but not great job; nails are evident, stain a bit dark}; finial tips broken and reglued. Has a great piece of shaped and beveled plate glass in the front door {1" bevel}. The thick glass and all the oak moldings make this a VERY heavy clock. Movement signed with "TH" trademark; running and striking but time to replace the old gut cord; also dial feet need a little tightening to align winding holes {you have to apply upward pressure on dial to insert key – minor} Weights and pendulum good; small dent in bob. An impressive clock: Alt Deutsch on a grand scale. Height 66" Reserve $1200
136. C.1850, Austrian, Serpentine, 1-Weight, 8-Day, Vienna Regulator with restorations. The case has been refinished to a medium walnut color {was probably faux grained originally}. This is a smaller clock with a 5" dial and original hands and pulley. Note close up showing beat-set as a disc with a pin in one side; this method has been used sporadically for over 200 years. This is a high quality movement with very fine pivots. Note beat scale is absent and weight hook is replaced off center so it hangs crooked; also needs side stabilizers. Original hands; dial perfect; bob smooth. A cute clock that needs only minor attention. Height 44" Reserve $650
137. C.1855, Austrian, 1-Wt, mini Vienna Regulator with 4¼" dial. This is a cute clock that someone lost the inner bezel on and then found another that was too small, so added a spacer to fill the distance to the dial ring. See dial photo; it is not obvious, only apparent when you hold the movement in your hands; also outer bezel held on with pins, should be small screws. The case back has a few worm holes; dial with hairlines. Retains original hands, pendulum and star pulley. One of the top finials has been turned to match the other {nice job}; door with dry split. Seems to run despite being very dirty. Overall a very cute clock that can be improved with a little patience & work. Height 35" Reserve $900
138. C.1900, German, R-A Wall Regulator in an unusual walnut case with over two dozen pieces of brass trim, plus two shelves each side. Although I’ve seen these before, we’ve never come across one quite this elaborate. It has been in storage and has a few minor case flaws that need attention: see bottom center, right, small circular trim missing, both larger finial tips missing, and case hanger is broken. The quality French style movement has solid plates and cut pinions; and is dirty, but sound and complete. The movement support has been moved in the case, but no other bracket has ever been there; bracket is also loose. The outer dial bezel has a small dent, but the porcelain dial and center are perfect. Fancy cast bronze pendulum. Beat scale with chip. If you like German wall clocks, and are looking for something unusual, this is a good antique that will restore nicely; ht 41" Reserve $850
139. C.1895, German "Regulator Germania" 2-Weight Wall clock in good original condition. The well made movement is virtually identical to a G. Becker, and as you can read on page 189 of Kochmann’s Trademark book, The Germania company formed in 1899 as a consolidation of Freiburg area clock factories, including the older Becker factory. Even the large trademark on the rear plate is similar to Becker, only with the letters "R-G", and Freiburg –Silesia. The top, finials and all hardware are original; dial and hands perfect; old weights and pulleys fine. Minor scrapes to case can be attended; small dents in pendulum; generally good+ condition; ht 51" Reserve $900
140. C.1855, Hungary [Pest], J. Blau, Wall regulator in the Viennese late Biedermeier style. Has an attractive grained case with ebonized finials and moldings. The 8-day movement is well made and with perfect dial and hands, signed Blau, J, Pest. Movement mounted on a wooden seatboard and sliding into wooden corbels. Extra nice 4-spoke pulley; weight with some dents. This case was filled with dust and cobwebs, but will restore nicely. Height 46" Reserve $650
141. C.1875, Austrian, 3-Weight Grand Sonnerie Vienna in the Alt Deutsch style. This is an exceptional clock. The only minor shortcoming is a couple of hairlines in the dial {no chips}. The case has full standing columns with button trim, a built-in pediment top with gallery and a bracket type base with matching trim. The hand made Vienna movement has no markings nor numbers but is a superior movement, well finished, and with original hands. Weights are nice with knurled tops and old hooks; smooth pendulum bob. Left side glass needs replacing; beat scale intact; overall excellent; height 56" Reserve $2000
142. C.1880, German, Black Forest, R-A Wall regulator, probably by Lorenz Bob, Furtwangen. See Dana Blackwell’s book on Lenzkirch, page 101 {L. Bob was a nearby Lenzkirch and his model lineup is included in the book}. This clock is identical to model #10, except missing the top trim {nails sticking out of case where trim was}. Oddly, the dial seems small for this case, but appears to keep time OK. There are no extra holes in the back, and the mounting bracket is original to the case and the movement fits the bracket. Movement is signed at bottom edge, Furderer Jaegler & Co; small hairlines on dial. Very dirty and in need of service; strike hammer loose. Height 28" Reserve $250
143. C.1830, Austrian, Laterndluhr, time only, approximately 3-month running time, with restorations. The case has been refinished; a split in the back repaired, one stabilizer missing completely, the other is missing the thumb screw. On the movement, the dial has been refinished, and the original engine turned bezel & center gold plated; the rear bridge has been repositioned once to adjust the verge. The pendulum stick has been replaced, broken again and repaired, 2-piece brass bob with very minor dents, and beat scale missing part of its paint. Clock runs but would benefit from service. On this style case, the hood slides forward and off for service; door to hood swings open to wind; center and bottom panels lift out for set-up and adjustment. In better condition, these bring 25,000. Height 46½" Reserve: $11000
144. C.1851, French, Time Only Miniature skeleton clock. A thorough discussion of these little clocks can be found in Royer-Collard’s book titled Skeleton Clocks, {1969}, pages 69-70. They were produced in 3 formats, time only, time and alarm, and time/alarm/calendar. They were meant to commem-orate the Great Exhibition of 1851, and several thousand were sold. This time only model has been cleaned to like new condition, and the dome is a new one from Ben Bowen. It is running and ready to enjoy; note fully engraved front plate; porcelain dial perfect. The alarm model sold in our Nov’99 auction, lot 434 for $2000+ premium. Ht 9" Reserve $1100
145. C.1895, Ansonia "ARMY" one day novelty clock in good original condition {most all gilding worn off}. Note army themes: three stacked rifles {rolling blocks, complete with slings}, regiment flag, trumpet and drum case for clock. The bezel is a little loose in its shroud, but the clock is otherwise sound. This model does not turn up often. Height 12 ½" Reserve $350
146. C.1895, Ansonia "NAVY" one day novelty clock in good original condition. Note marine themes: rope base, oars, gaff, ships wheel, tackle, and anchor, surmounted by original spelter flag. About half the original gilding is worn away, but it has never been painted and has a great look. Ht 12 ½" Reserve $350
147. C.1886, Seth Thomas, "Office Calendar No. 10" in walnut, attractively restored and in outstanding condition. This case style was one of Seth Thomas most versatile, being used for the No. 6 {both time and double time}, as well as the No. 10 calendar for nearly 25 years. This is the early version with the calendar dial in the base and the pendulum visible behind a carved grill between the two dials. These dials were professionally done by the Dial House and are about as good as it gets for repaints. The well made movement is driven by a weight which descends down a channel, inside the right side of the case. Retains good interior label. See this movement in detail in Ly’s Calendar Clocks, page 255. Ready to hang and enjoy. Height 49" Ly estimate $3750. Reserve $3000
148. C.1890, Seth Thomas, "Office Calendar #4" in very good condition. The time dial has been professionally repainted on original pan and looks very good. Lower dial, rollers and hands are original. Rosewood case has good veneer with only minor nicks and scrapes. Retains both original labels – inside case back and inner door. Above average for what comes to market today. Height 27 ½" Reserve $700
149. C.1850, French, Gilt Spelter with bronze accents, figural clock, hunter motif. This clock has been disassembled and sprayed gold. The spelter hunter has a heavy coat of copper that is oxidized, and the plume for his hat and his flint-lock rifle are ormolu. Note he is holding his dead prey – a pheasant. The well made bell strike movement has a silk thread suspension, and runs and strikes, but would benefit from service. The minute shaft will need attention, as the retainer pin has been sheared off even with the shaft and will need drifting out; amazingly the original hands have not gotten lost. This clock has an elegant look for a modest reserve; ht 18½" Reserve $350
150. C.1850, French, Ormolu Figural Clock, oriental motif. A lady in a finely detailed robe is setting on cushions pouring tea {note cup is missing}. Behind the tea pot is a potted succulent in bloom, and with the same bloom in her hair; the base with a Ming style scene with several revelers being pushed up river in a covered boat, a palace in the distance. Has a good silk thread movement, time and strike and an engine turned dial with Roman numerals. It originally had a hinged rear dust cover which is lacking. This clock is in good running order. There is minor wear to the original gilding, but it is still very bright. Height 17" Reserve $1400
151. C.1850, French, Ormolu Figural Clock, Spanish explorer motif. Is this Balboa or Cortez? A Spaniard in 16th Century dress, along with marine and conquest items: cannon, cannon balls, sail, axe, trunk and anchor, the whole resting on a base with waves and a bust of Neptune. The once silk suspension is now by spring, and the dial with hairlines around 7. Runs and strikes on a bell. There is loss to the gilding on the sides of the clock, but the front is still very bright, and the conquistador himself is nearly perfect; note crystal is open for photo to reduce glare. We were fortunate to receive such a wide variety of French figural clocks in this sale. Height 17 ½" Reserve $1300
152. C.1860, French Ormolu Figural Clock, Queen Victoria commemorative, showing the robed queen leaning against a pedestal, with the royal coat of arms to her left, the Crown setting on a pillow {you’ll recognize both the crown and her jewels if you’ve been to the Tower of London}, and her majesty’s left hand resting on a written proclamation that she is apparently reading. This is a timepiece; the rear mounting bezel was lost and a substitute was used. Still the motif is interesting and finished off in great detail; one rear foot is slightly bent. Seems to run OK; sure to be of interest to Anglophiles. Height 19½" Reserve $1650
153. C.1900, French, Inlaid Marquetry Bracket for a shelf clock. Note the shelf looks curved [it is not, just we had to move off center to keep the flash from obliterating the detail]. The top shelf size is 12.5 x 5.5 inches, and is about an inch wider than the original, because someone added an extra molding and top {really looks OK}. This bracket would really show off an inlaid or gilded clock. Height 15½" Reserve $250
154. C.1840, French, Ormolu Figural Clock, a young lad dressed in knee pants and with shovel and a straw hat with flowers. He seems to be taking a break from working in the garden. The original gilding on this clock is quite bright and the detail is very nice. The porcelain dial has small chips by both winding holes and hairlines by 5. The well made silk thread movement strikes on a bell, and is running and striking. Height 13 ¼" Reserve $1000
155. C.1860, French, Ormolu Figural Clock, a winged lady sitting in the garden and pouring water from a pitcher onto flowers. This clock has exceptional detail, note the delicate wings, hair and gown of the lady. The base with rococo shells and swirls, along with a wreath and garlands, a quiver of arrows, and a torch. The well made bell strike movement is signed Caplan & Salles, Fab. A`Paris, and with a perfect porcelain dial with dark blue numerals and chapter. The gilding with some wear on the front, and the rear discolored. Running and striking. Ht 12½" Reserve $1200
156. C.1840, French, Ormolu Figural Clock, in generally good condition. Retains original silk thread movement and engine turned dial {silver over brass}. There is some wear to the gilding, although it looks quite bright in the photo. Subject matter is a pensive adolescent girl, hand over her heart, kneeling at a monument. The base is a fantasy of scrolls and ribbons, attractively done. Runs and strikes; dial is good. Height 12¼" Reserve $1000
157. C.1840, French, Ormolu Figural Clock, in an unusual motif, a Swiss falconer with bird and trumpet. This clock has been polished to mostly brass, a little gilding left in the crevices, and the falconer has been broken off and soldered {and loose again}. The dial too is filled with hairlines; silk thread movement is sound and running – striking on a bell. If you are into hunting scenes, this will merit restoration. Height 19½" Reserve $1000
158. C.1920, Wm. L. Gilbert, "Corridor" oak cased wall clock in very good condition. The case was stripped and refinished to a golden color, and could use a bit more "finish". [Looks OK as-is] Retains original dial {with Gilbert Trademark}, hands hardware, & tablet. Rear label is about 90%. Running. Height 24" Reserve $175
159. C.1890, Seth Thomas, Hanging Eclipse, walnut ball top, as-found. The lower left return is missing, and the case has been stripped and stained a bit dark. Retains original dial, pend, tablet, hands, alarm, etc. Dial mask is cracked and the screws holding it on are a bit large; dial with wear around winding holes; hour hand loose on hub. Label is there, but a bit dark. Has potential. Height 26 ½" Reserve $250
160. C.1895, Waterbury, 12 Inch Octagon Drop Calendar clock in generally good condition. The original paper dial has several stains and modest wear. The case was nicely refinished long ago and looks OK. Xlnt inside label, and original tablet & pendulum; remains of model label on rear. By the style of hands, I am guessing this was an export model that has returned to the US. 8-day, T/S/Calendar. Height 23" Reserve $275
161. C.1885, Seth Thomas, "Parlor Calendar No. 3" in rosewood, with restorations. Both dials have been papered over {originals were painted}, and the rollers recovered; time hands are from an OG. The rosewood veneer has a couple of small chips on the top, but is overall excellent and well colored. Case retains original finish and inside label is intact. Full details on these perpetual calendar mechanisms can be found in Tran du Ly’s yellow book titled Calendar Clocks. Height 27" Reserve $450
162. C.1877 {dated label}, Ithaca Calendar Clock Co., NO. 4 HANGING OFFICE, in walnut, in good original condition. This clock is out of a house in Maine and is virtually untouched. The 12" time dial is especially worn in the "4 to 6" and the paper has come loose from the orig dial plate; calendar dial is very good with some wear & dirt; rollers original, label with tear, but still 90% there. This clock uses the 30 day double spring brass movement mfg by Welch especially for Ithaca. The door has a small dry split top left, otherwise sound with good original finish. This particular clock always had a solid dial. A very good example. Height 28" Reserve $1000
163. C.1879, Ithaca Shelf Calendar "No. 5" in good original condition. This clock and the "Rosewood Round Top" are the same basic case with trim differences. Priced at $20 with strike and alarm, this was much more expensive than the "Farmer’s" model priced at $12, and explains why we see so few of these. The rosewood case is in good shape, with original finish {minor dry split or 2}, and both dials are original as well. Has original rear dust cover with instruction sheet {too dark to photograph well, but quite legible}. Also included is a copy of treatise on the calendar, written out by a happy collector in 1979. Time dial is 7", and calendar dial is 8"; rollers are original {a bit dark but legible}. 8-day, time, strike and with alarm--winds by #18 date. Height 22½" Reserve $650
164. C.1775, Swiss, 8-Day Quarter Striking mantel clock. As you might imagine, the Swiss were influenced by both the French and the Austrians in their clock making. This movement is large and round [diam=5.5 inches]as the French would make it, but the quarter count wheel and nest of 2 bells is mounted on the back plate, in a similar fashion to some early Austrian movements. The back plate is signed J. P. DuComun. The suspension is silk thread. The pendulum has been replaced, and you might find something more appropriate at a local chapter meeting of NAWCC [note pend length is off a bit as well] The portico style case is supported by wooden pilasters in the rear, faced with gilt reed plants, and the front supported by full bodied Greek maidens with capitals on their heads. Feet & wooden rear dust cover are missing. An interesting 18th Century clock. Height 17½" Reserve $500
165. C.1920, Waterbury Clock Co., 8 Inch Arion, solid oak wall clock in very good original condition; retains both labels on rear {minor loss to model label}; original varnish is still shiny, except for a couple of spots that look like they’ve gotten damp. Movement has been sprayed with oil, and some has darkened the dial center. Having said all this, the clock is still a very good example of this model; ht 18½" Reserve = $200
166. C.1929, Sessions, 9 Inch Drop Octagon in generally good original condition. This clock has never been serviced and yet tries to run through the grime. Original paper dial has lots of little rust stains showing through, but is still well attached to the pan; nice Sessions pressed brass pendulum. This is an 8-day time and strike clock; about half the Sessions label is intact on rear; this is the Office model, produced from 1929 through 1939, a true "depression era-bare-bones model". The case is poplar with original dark mahogany finish; bezel is well oxidized and needs polishing. Will clean up fine. Ht 23" Reserve $200
167. C.1900, Ingraham "Dew Drop" Time & Calendar drop dial, as-found. This clock came to us from storage and the finish is caked and grungy, and all 4 glue joints on the bezel have separated. The dial paper is new over original pan; hands original; tablet repainted by an amateur; no label. Ticks and retains original movement; height 23 ½" Reserve $225
168. C.1886, Ansonia "Florentine, No. 3" in generally good condition. When new, this model came with or without a statue, and this horse is a reproduction. Dial with open ‘scape; the porcelain dial center was damaged and has been repaired {dial centers are available from suppliers}. Retains old dark red velvet. A repairman slightly bent the rear plate of the movement on re-assembly, but it does not affect the operation of the clock. 8-day time & strike; orig hands, pend, gong, feet, etc. Clock ht = 13 ½", total with horse = 21" Reserve $300
169. C.1891, Wm. L. Gilbert "OCCIDENTAL" mirror side in very good, as-found condition. This clock came from an attic in Methuen and we had to brush the cobwebs off. The original finish was varnished over years ago and is quite dark; spelter case trim has lost its gilding; orig pendulum with center dented. NOW, on the plus side this clock retains great original label, original statues, side mirrors, dial, tablet and hardware. Can’t remember when we had a mirror side with old statues. The walnut base molding has a small chip that can be filled in with a sliver of walnut and be undetectable. Height 24" Modest reserve $350
170. C,1890, E. N. Welch, "No. 1 Drop Octagon" in walnut, in generally good condition. The old dial pan has been papered over [decent job], bottom tablet now clear and a corner chip on access door. The rest of the clock is well preserved; veneer on top bezel is still intact and clock retains original hands, pendulum and both inner and outer labels. Height 23 ¾" Reserve $225
171. C.1850, English, Single Fusee Drop Dial in very good condition. The dial was repainted some time ago and with a nice look to it. Clock retains original hands, bezel finish and pend bob {rod itself is replaced}. The mahogany case is in generally good condition, with minor age cracks and nicks and scrapes here and there that are not objectionable….and retains original finish. Movement runs but is dirty and would benefit from service; has woven nylon cable. A well made clock; the dial is 11". Height 27" Very modest reserve $325
172. Mixed Lot: C.1825 Seth Thomas case and dial now with a C.1835 Jerome brass bushed wooden movement with 42 tooth ‘scape {see detail photo}. As you know the spacing is wider on this movement, so the winding holes have been routed out a bit to allow winding, and the rear of the dial relieved. The old tablet looks to have been repainted in place some time ago and now flaking again. The case itself has been refinished to alight mahogany, and retains old scrolls and glue blocks {glue blocks for returns are missing}. Retains a decent label {see Ken Roberts, page 109, absent Terry patent}. The marriage was done by a competent workman, and the clock ticks and strikes, and certainly fills the bill for a "decorative" early American clock; ht 31" Reserve $1000
173. Mixed Lot: C.1925, A Seth Thomas off center case {with internal pulleys}, now with a Riley Whiting backboard, label and movement. This is another good running "decorative" scroll for those who are on a budget {or who can use the case}. The scrolls have been broken and glued [orig pieces]; the feet and skirt were carefully laid out by a man who cut 3 pieces and mitered them at the corners {should be right and left foot assemblies with a non-mitered skirt}. The quality tablet is new and attractive. Height 30" A lot of clock for the reserve of $750
174. Mixed lot: C.1950, Chelsea Marine timepiece, with 8.5" dial AND a matching brass clock case, now with a British aneroid barometer by Shortland Smiths Instrument Co. Both cases have hinged bezels with thumb-screw retainers. Note the case with the barometer has vacant holes for the clock mount. It is a good looking set and with a reserve well below what the consignor paid. Diameter = 11" Reserve $700
175. C.1900, French, Hanging Porcelain cartel clock, on chain. This is the original that New Haven copied with a brass case instead of china. {See lots 405 & 413}. The well made round French movement has a short pivoted pendulum, but more important has a skeletonized front plate, so that the ‘scape and gears are visible in viewing the clock. Note movement is dirty and requires service, but will respond well to cleaning. Diameter of case is 8", overall length 21½" Modest reserve $250
176. C.1870, J. Smith & Sons, Clerkenwell, England, for retailer H. Reynolds, New York,, an exceptional one train skeleton clock in a standard Smith’s pattern with Lions on either side. Full details on Smith’s operation can be found in both Royer-Collard, pages 51-57, and in British Skeleton Clocks, by Derek Roberts [1987], pages 126-135, and in particular a photo of this model shown on page 129. Note original chain, pendulum and dial are intact, and the clock is in running order. Interestingly the dealer had installed a small brass compass in the center of the stepped brass clock base. All wheels, including motion wheels are quality 5-spoke. The only minor shortcoming on this clock is the new dome which is a bit wavier than the old ones, but certainly fits OK and protects the clock from dust. Height of clock & base: 14½"; with dome 19" Reserve $1250
177. C.1890, English, Single Fusee Skeleton clock and dome. This is a late Victorian clock, with simple scalloped dial, silvered and painted, but not engraved. The chain has broken and been replaced with brass cable. With 4 spoked wheels, note motion wheels are solid. The old dome is a replacement and does not fit well in the base channel. However the dome is still the correct size for the clock and the base can be corrected to fit this dome well. The frame of the clock is a simple scroll pattern, well executed, and is held aloft by 4 turned brass finials. This frame design was popular from its inception in 1830 right through the end of the century. Pendulum has been dropped and bottom dented; will need work for proper rating. Height of base and clock: 13¼", total height with dome 15½" . Reserve $900
178. C.1850, English, Single Fusee Skeleton clock and dome. This is a clock has a delicate scroll frame, scalloped dial and nicely spoked wheels {motion wheels are solid}, and well shaped and tapered pillars. The old dome is a replacement and although large enough for the clock, will need a new intermediate board cut {the one with velour} to fit the slightly smaller width dome. An example of this frame style with turned brass supports may be seen in British Skeleton Clocks, by Derek Roberts [1987], page 56, fig 2/9b. The chain has been replaced with braided steel cable; pendulum made new by a very good machinist. Mechanically sound and running. Height of base and clock: 11", total height with dome, 12¼" Reserve $1000
179. C.1850, Connecticut Clock Co., 54 John St, New York, 30 hour ripple steeple in very good condition. We took the dial off to survey the case, and the movement is original, but was moved once to get a better bite on the case back, and then moved back to the original holes. The dial is original; the center retaining original signature: "CONN. CLOCK Co., Polished Pinions", margin flakes have been filled in nicely. The case was refinished long ago and has a pleasant look. Best part is the original geometric tablet, on which the border only has been re-touched in white. With xlnt and bright label that is near perfect; finial tips intact- never broken. Ht 19½" Reserve $1500
180. C.1882, Yale Clock Co, New Haven, Conn., miniature cast iron timepiece in good original condition. Some of the black enamel is chipped off the iron case and some of the gold accent is discolored, but overall this is a neat example of Yale’s work Note window showing visible lever ‘scape. The paper time dial is a little dark, but still legible. Shows excellent workmanship throughout. 30-hour; runs. Height 4¼" Reserve $400
181. C.1895, Daniel Pratt’s Son, Boston, weight banjo, with restorations. The pendulum stick has been glued and the bob and tie-down are from a Chelsea. Both tablets were crudely repainted maybe 30 years ago and are flaking. The dial signature is still strong, but the paint is starting to flake in several places. The well made movement attaches with a single screw from the rear, and runs fine. Height 29" Reserve $1000
182. C.1890, French Calendar Clock in a black marble clock with tan onyx accents. The only minor shortcoming on this is that the left dial grommet [brass] has gotten lost. Otherwise this is an attractive and well made clock with the unusual feature of day and date on either side of the open escapement. This is a simple calendar [adjust manually for short months]. The incised case retains much of the original gilt accent, and with bronze bun feet. Height 15" Reserve $850
183. C.1918, Chelsea Clock Co., "Tambour No. 4" with original Chelsea ‘Model A’ candelabra. This 3 piece set is right out of a house in Stoneham, and is in excellent original condition, with superb original bronze finish. The special dial is 6 ½" with raised bronze numerals, and engraved with the name of the retailer, Smith, Patterson Co., Boston. This is a house strike model, movement and case with serial number 133170. Height 12". The price guide puts the clock at $750 and the candle sticks at $100, which is low. The price of this set new in 1920 was $214 {$179 clock + $39 for candelabra}. Reserve $600
184. C.1880, Yale Clock Co, Medical Advertising Clock, for Reed’s Gilt Edge Tonic Cures, with restorations. This mini grandfather has a great look, but has had the following work: Ad on old dial has been repainted and pencil lines show; both lower ads are newly drawn by a talented graphic artist with India ink and pencil on brown paper, and with new cardstock backing. They are accurate representations of the originals. The lower case back was missing and now replaced with a piece of ¼" plywood, painted black. We’ve seen these bring $1600 in advertising sales, and this reserve reflects condition. Height 17½" Reserve $700
185. C.1885, Yale Clock Co., Medical Advertising Clock, for Reed’s Gilt Edge Tonic, with restorations. The mahogany case on this clock is about the nicest I’ve seen and the original dial is very good {minor wear to gloss coat and along edges}. Also this is an 8-day time + strike model, certainly the most desirable. Note also this clock has all 3 panes of glass with heavy bevel; later clocks only have the top glass beveled. But the two ads [Reed’s Gilt Edge Tonic Cures Malaria and Indigestion] are color prints on new paper…..well done and even aged with lamp black. So we leave the final determination to you. Ht 24 ¼" Reserve $750
186. C.1875, Welch, Spring & Co., "Parepa V.P." in excellent original condition. Rosewood case retains original finish, and with interior base label and rear model label is about 60% there. Good original gilt tablet, sandwich glass pendulum and painted dial. {only smallest flaw is a pair of extra holes in edge of dial pan which line up with two holes in case}. A nice example of this model and sure to please the Welch collector. Height 22" Reserve $750
187. C.1810, French, Sauvage, a`Paris, Ormolu mantel regulator. The shortcoming on this clock are chips by both winding holes {been painted over so do not show in photo}, and the bell has been changed to a modern stamped steel job {replacements available} The case is finished to the highest quality, as is the silk thread movement; also it runs robustly, but the strike does not shut off when detent is reached & will need service. The hands are delicately pierced, plus chased and gilded. The case is surmounted by a spread eagle, also with fine detail. Height 14¾" Reserve $3000
188. C.1885, Ansonia "Double Figure Swing" Clock, the Huntress and Fisher, and in excellent original condition. Noteworthy is the unusual {and original} Arabic numeral dial, which is rarely seen. We’ve had only 2 such dials in the last 25 years. No records survive to discuss this difference, but all clock companies had large dial departments and it would have been easy to fill such a special request at the time. Note also the early design decorative base Clock is clean and running; height 25" Reserve $4200
189. C.1900, Ansonia, Unusual Large Swing clock, the oversize female figure with both arms raised, holding a fancy cast support which in turn carries the stud for the rare long arm clock {measuring 22" alone}. This clock appears to be in excellent original condition, with a super paper dial, only slightly discolored with age, and clearly displaying the Ansonia trademark and 1878 patent info. For the Ansonia collector who is looking for something different. Height 31" Reserve $5000
190. C.1902, Ansonia Clock Co., "Coronet" Crystal Regulator, with the fanciest brilliant ring dial and pendulum available at the time. Open escape movement is in good running order. Sadly someone tried to insert a key to large for the winding hole and chipped the outer dial {and then glued the pieces back}. This clock is worth ordering a new dial from ProClocks or one of the other suppliers. I tried to talk the seller down in price owing to the dial, but he was stubborn; height 14 ½" Reserve $700
191. C.1900, French, "A-1", for Tiffany & Co {signed}, fancy crystal regulator with a heavy bronze case with acanthus leaf molding across both the bottom and top. The beveled glass is all good and the floral dial has only a small chip above the ‘50’ minute marker; fancy gilt hands are hand tooled with engraving. Retains original mercury pendulum with gilded frame. Overall a very nice crystal regulator. Ht 13" Reserve $900
192. C.1885, French, for Bigelow, Kennard & Co., Boston {on dial}, a lovely French clock in the Louis XIV style and with the case finished in the style of Vernis Martin, profusely decorated with flowers [front, sides and rear]] and with a flirtation scene below the dial, the artwork signed A. Leroy. The well made gong strike movement is by Marti, and also signed "A-1". The movement has been serviced, but the replacement pendulum is too long {simple to shorten}, and the strike side will not stop striking. The images of this clock speak for themselves….it is simply one of the nicest ones we’ve seen in a long while, and well worth the adjustments on the movement. Porcelain dial is perfect. Height 10 ½" Conservative reserve $400
193. C.1890, French, Ormolu Cartel Clock in the Louis XIV style. This case took a tumble and a couple of the leaf tips have been welded on and re-gilded. Still, it is very attractive, the good Marti movement running, and the porcelain dial is excellent. Retains original hands. Bottom screw that should retain bezel is missing, and threads are stripped; top 2 are holding it OK. Lots of "look", ht 19.5" Reserve $800
194. C.1880, French, Ormolu Cartel Clock in excellent condition. This clock, in the Louis XVI style, is draped with life size acanthus branches, and with finials and sprays. The well made Marti movement is running and striking on a bell {strike hammer is replaced}. The porcelain dial is excellent and with blue numerals and chapter ring. Fancy cast hands are nicely chased. A nice clock. Height 24.5" Reserve $1000
195. C.1860, French, Ormolu Cartel Clock in excellent condition. In the Louis XVI style, this case is draped with acanthus swags, accented by a large flaming torch and smaller finials. This clock is larger than the previous lot. There are the remains of a retailer on the dial: Bouchet a` Paris, and the large and well made bell strike movement bears the mark of Vincenti & Cie {plus initials of an old repair person}. The porcelain dial measures 6 inches and is perfect, the numerals and chapter in very dark blue. The movement is running, but would benefit from service. Nice size & impressive; height 27" Reserve $2500
196. C.1900, French, Brass Cased Carriage Clock, time, strike and repeat, the column case with an engraved and silvered overlay mask surrounding the dial. The dial signed C. W. Schumann & Sons, New York. Retains original silvered lever platform {now oxidized}, and runs and strikes, but would benefit from service. All beveled glass is good, and the movement numbered 2432. Note the carry handle is a fancy multi-piece job and the threads have stripped on one side and will need attention. Height 7¼" Reserve $1200
197. C.1930, German, Whistling Man with Small lantern in his right hand, and a large silver key in his left hand. This is an unusual model, the lantern wired with a bulb to flash intermittently while the man is whistling {see more common lamp-post model below}. The carved wooden figure has excellent detail, and with 70 years of dirt and fly specs; we really used a strong flash to try to show the colors lurking under the dirt. The whistling mechanism has been cleaned and is in good working order. Battery box in base below figure. Ht 15" Reserve $950
198. C.1950, German, Whistling Drunk at Lamp-post, in very good original condition. This model has a battery box carved into the wooden base, which holds 2 D-cells to power the blinking light in the lantern. Note old batteries corroded and rendered this part inoperative. The paint is in excellent condition and the mechanical spring wound whistling mechanism is in good working order. These wind-up models have been replaced with transistor models that whistle through a speaker; most collectors prefer these older ones. Height 19" Reserve $650
199. C.1950, German, Whistling Man with Clock. This is an interesting model that we’ve not seen before; usually the man has the clock in his arms. The 30 hour wind up clock is dirty but still ticks; has attractive dial with mountain scene in the arch. The wind up whistling mechanism is still in good order, whistling a lively rendition of The Bear Went Over the Mountain. Height 14" Reserve $900
200. C.1889, New Haven Clock Co., "Lighthouse" Automaton clock, the brass case heavily silvered [oxidized], with gilt trim [the gilding with wear]. Retains original paper dial with some blemishes. The movement in this model has a duplex [double toothed] escape wheel. The "prisms" of the lighthouse lantern double as the balance of the movement and turn briskly back and forth, catching your eye. The winding square extends through the bottom of the case, and you lift the clock for access. This clock runs a while and stops. Overall good+ condition; ht 12½" Reserve $1750
201. C.1900, French, for J. E. Caldwell, Crystal Regulator, with unusual miniature Wedgewood panels, 3 in the top molding and another 3 in the base, and with a seventh as the dial center. This is a high quality Column case with a heavy cast urn at top, and the feet and finials well chased with a fine basket pattern. The well made round movement is numbered 5007-411, and with the prominent signature of J. E. Caldwell, Philadelphia, and striking the hours on a heavy flat wire gong. Appears to be in running order. The 4 panes of heavy beveled glass are all good, and the hands and mercury pendulum are original; ht 16" Reserve $1000
202. C.1875, Small Bronze Figure of Puck or ‘Goat Boy’, carrying a barrel overhead, on which is setting a dove. In the barrel is a Swiss finger bridge key wind watch movement, with fancy gilt hands. This is a cute miniature and the watch even runs. Ht 7¼" Reserve: $350
203. C.1948, German, Post War Novelty, the eyes rotate while the clock runs. Carved wooden face of a "sad sack" ready for bed with stocking cap on. We had a similar one of these in the Nov ’99 sale, lot number 653, which sold for $600. Height 7" Reserve $475
204. C.1900, French, Industrial Series "Bell" clock, with a small 8-day gong striking, lever escapement movement {Japy Freres} contained within the heavy cast bell {and with replacement Swiss platform}. The bell was originally silvered and most of the silver was polished away by a dutiful maid. Below the dial is engraved the phrase: VAE.MIHI.SI.NON.-EVANGELISAVERO. The bell is supported on an oak yoke across two substantial brass uprights, the whole mounted to a red marble base with a gilt bronze footing. These clocks were retailed by Cartier. See sister to this clock in Sotheby’s New York catalog, dated June 28, 1993 {Meraux Collection}, lot 48, which sold for $1610, and also in Derek Roberts’ book: Mystery Novelty & Fantasy Clocks, [1999], page 260. The 3" silvered dial with wear; ht 14¾" Reserve $1150
205. C.1895, French "Cooking Pot" Mantel Clock, from the French Industrial and novelty series. The gong striking Marti movement has a pendulum in the form of a cooking pot which oscillates in the fireplace. There are two minor items lacking from this example which do not affect its operation: a turned lid for the pot {easily lost} and the set of andirons. These last items may be seen on an example of this clock in Derek Roberts’ book: Mystery Novelty & Fantasy Clocks, [1999], page 263, and also in the Meraux Collection [Sotheby’s], lot #6. This clock is otherwise in good original condition, dirty and needing cleaning throughout. Ht 16", W=12", D=6" Reserve $2100
206. C.1895, French Automaton Tower Clock, with 2 jacks in the belfry. This is a rare Victorian clock, only the second I’ve seen in 25 years. Case retains nice aged patina, gilt and copper over spelter case…. it is quite attractive. The movement has just been professionally cleaned, and when the clock strikes, BOTH jacks rotate and release smartly to hit the central bell with large hammers. The actual bell sound comes from a bell attached to the movement, but you would never know this to watch it on the mantle. See close-up of jack. Overall excellent. Ht 19½" Reserve $3100
207. C.1840, French Terrestrial Globe Clock. This is an interesting clock, with a conventional time dial on the front of the case, and with a small globe above [around 3 inches] that advances hourly. There is a lever on the front of the movement, pushed by a pin on the cannon pinion that moves the globe 15° with each rotation of the minute hand. A ratchet wheel with 24 notches is spring loaded to keep the globe in position. Note the globe has damage and needs some restoration, and the silk suspension, bell-strike movement needs cleaning for reliable operation. Also with brass plaque signed Roze` Horologere Mecaniciene, that also hides the winding holes and tilts for winding. See identical clock in Joseph Meraux collection; Sothebys, June 28, 1993, lot 482 {$1035}. An unusual clock with lots of potential. Height 20" Reserve $1200
208. C.1900, French Time Globe. This is a large and impressive globe [13"] in remarkably good condition. The small oval with the globe makers name has been painted over, and is illegible, however the paper surface is otherwise in very good condition, crisply legible, with bright colors for the continents. There are some bits of the equator seam strip missing, and this should be attended. The globe and clock assembly are supported by a turned wooden base. The quality clock movement is housed in a 5" brass canister, and driven by a heavy spring wound with a music-box-style ratchet lever winder. A single brass hand extending from the North Pole can be positioned at your city of choice and the time read off the chapter ring at the equator [numbered I-XII twice]. Such globes were popular in schools and libraries around the turn of the 20th Century. Height 23.5" Reserve $7500
209. C.1830, English, 8-Bell, 3-Fusee, Regency Bracket clock in nice condition. This is an exceptional clock for several reasons. First off it chimes the quarters on a set of 8 cast bells, playing the Whittington church melody. Next is the size, a surprising 43.5" high, a most imposing piece, the well figured mahogany veneers and moldings in very good condition; and finally the mounts, or brass trim pieces are of fine quality, well chased and adding to the elegance of the piece. There are filled holes in the base molding, indicating some old wood-worm activity, and an extra set of holes in the rear plate where the original support bracket was moved for better stability. The gazebo at top displays a gowned lady, with surprising resemblance to a young Queen Victoria. The dial, signed P. des Granges, London, has been reblacked over an old surface, and with a strike/silent hand in the arch. Height 43.5" Reserve $7500
210. C.1900, Ansonia "Hanging Antique" in very good condition, refinished. This clock is in walnut, and was received as an ‘antique wedding gift’ in 1965. The couple had it refinished to match their other walnut furniture and the stain is darker than we normally expect. The clock hung in the same spot for 35 years and we had to use the vacuum on it to get of the dust and cobwebs. The movement is still VERY dirty and will need service prior to operation [it is complete and sound]. The original gilding on the ormolu parts is still very bright, and the original twisty weights with fancy end-caps and cast chain stops are all there. Height 46½" These have been bringing in the $7500 to $10,000 range, and our reserve will allow for cleaning and other minor attention. Reserve $6000
211. C.1880, Swiss, Black Forest, Carved mantel clock, depicting a large retriever at top, and 3 especially scared rabbits below, the whole in a forest scene with ferns, flowers and rocks. The movement is French, 8-day time and strike, and well made; the wooden dial with 12 porcelain cartouche numerals [all intact]. The quality of the carving on the case is exceptional, as we have tried to show in the close-up images. Ht 21" Reserve $1400
212. C.1900, German, reproduction of a 17th Century "rack" clock. The one day gravity movement is wound by raising the clock each morning. A one way ratchet in the movement allows a gear to turn along the toothed side of the vertical brass piece. This is a high quality clock, the dial surround hand engraved with great detail, and the workmanship on the movement is very good as well. The originals of these are expensive. Note this is a miniature, the diameter of the dial under 2 inches. Runs well; ht 18" Reserve $1000
213. C.1870, Austrian, Mini Annular Dial clock, blue enamel over silver, with hand painted female displays. The silver has a gentle damascene pattern that reflects through the translucent blue enamel. The case hardware is silver {excluding movement and dial}, with some oxidation.. The top has 3 standing ladies in gowns in small cameos, and the base 3 child’s faces in cameos. The urn is attached to a small octagon of white marble as a base. These clocks were popular gifts in Central Europe during the late 19th Century, and are really a work of art; in viewing the top, realize that each cameo is only about ½ inch high, and is hand painted with amazing detail This is a superior example; time only. Refer to Nov ‘99 sale, lot 317, same size clock in white sold for $3400+. Height 4.7" Reserve $2900
214. C.1870, Austrian, Annular Dial clock, opalescent enamel over silver, with hand painted cherub displays. The silver has a gentle damascene pattern that reflects through the translucent white enamel. The case hardware is gold over silver {excluding movement and dial}, with some oxidation.. The top and base have 3 winged cherubs in cameos, while the front cameo depicts a distraught woman at the sea-shore with a crying cherub nearby. This clock is half again as large as the previous lot, same fine quality throughout. These were very expensive gifts when new. Height 7¼" Reserve $3850
215. C.1890, French, Three Graces Annular Dial clock in excellent condition, with restoration. The top of the globe got dropped and the underside shows evidence of straightening, and the entire globe was refinished in cobalt blue {excellent workmanship}. This work is only evident on the closest examination, and the general appearance of the clock and the original bright yellow fire gilding is outstanding. The marble base is intact, and decorated on all 3 sides with fanciful sprays of ormolu. The 3 nude ladies, or graces, hold the ball aloft and acanthus swags are draped from each ladies hands to the next. The well made movement strikes on a bell and is wound by removing the top of the ball. See virtually identical clock pictured in Tardy’s La Pendule Francaise , part II, page 291, fig 3. Also see Sotheby’s Meraux sale {6-28-93}, lot371, which sold 7 years ago for $13,225. This is a very large clock, well made and certain to please the most discriminating collector. Height 30" {76 cm} Reserve $15000
216. C.1890, New Haven, "Chime Clock No. 1" in oak with brass trimmings. This clock is complete and original with all finials, feet and trim intact. The description in the New Haven catalog is inadequate; please see Tran Ly’s New Haven book, page 400, where he pictures 4 views of this unique and sturdy movement. Note it plays Whittington 8-bell tune, not Westminster as indicated in the catalog. There is a pull repeat lever out the top of the clock that repeats the hours on a large gong in case you lost count. Uses a unique disc pendulum with center ball adjustment. The cast bells have excellent tone. The dial is silvered, etched brass with cast spandrels in the corners, with F/S scale below hand shaft. Case with minor wear, but with original finish in very good condition; beveled glass in door. Note there are 4 flame finials on top but rear 2 do not show in photo; also see side frets with original cloth intact. Bottom molding is coming loose. A great American clock. Height 18" Reserve $1900
217. C.1890, French, Bronzed Spelter Mini Swinging timepiece. This is an attractive size clock. The turned wood base is original, but split from the center hole outward, and has been filled. The statue and arm retain original finish, and the attractive young girl has just set down her palette of paint and brushes….the statue with a brass plaque on the base titled PEINTURE or ‘painting’, after Rousseau, and the statue itself signed Ruffony. The arm has some dirt and rust on the rods that someone has tried to scrape off, and the rear of the ball with minor dent. The suspension unit has come loose in transit and will need attention for the clock to run {ticks OK}. Height is only 20" [ball diam is 2½"] Reserve $3100
218. C.1890, French, Mystery Clock, Traditional bronzed spelter statue, holding pendulum which swings with no apparent impulse. This clock came to us from a home in Queens, and we had to wash 20 years of nicotine from the dial just to take the picture. There are some nicks and scrapes to the moldings of the black marble case, but none major. The black slate dial with incised and gilt numerals is xlnt. Best of all the statue retains original patina and with fancy cast pendulum bob that we rarely find {see detail image}. Runs and strikes, but would benefit from service if you want to run this daily. Height 24" [61cm] Modest reserve of $4300
219. C.1840, French, Louis-Philippe, Cathedral form clock, with ringing bell in belfry. Refer to Tardy’s La Pendule Francaise, part II, page 451, for photo of nearly identical clock on display at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. This clock is in outstanding original condition. There is minor wear to the silver and some oxidation, but overall it is very bright and eye catching. Has a fancy cast and gilt pendulum that is visible when the clock is against a light surface, as there is a small window behind the alcove. Has a well made movement that strikes on a regular bell behind the movement, and the hammer with a string up to the bell in the belfry. Height 23½" [60cm] Reserve $3750
220. C.1905, Ansonia "Crystal Regulator No. 4" in excellent original condition. The only minor items to mention are a couple of hairlines in the dial. The rest is immaculate and just the way we like to collect them. The outstanding coloration on this particular clock speaks for itself; we took the photo in sunlight so there would be no doubt about the colors, and there are some resultant shadows on the dial. Note this clock case is identical front and back, including decorations. See lot 11 also. Height 17¾" Reserve $3100
221. C.1900, Ansonia Porcelain China, "Tempest" model in excellent original condition. The blue cobalt case retains great gold highlights, and the pink and yellow floral decorations are well done; no chips nor cracks. Signed Ansonia movement is clean and running. Paper dial with minor wear to numeral 6. Ht 10" Res: $300
222. C.1905, Ansonia Porcelain China "Winner" in good original condition. The only minor shortcoming is a single crack across the porcelain dial [does not show from a distance]. The dark pink [almost red] color is brilliant and the case highlights are still bright; no chips nor cracks. Signed Ansonia movement is running and striking Height 11¼" Reserve $300
223. C.1900, Ansonia "Juno Swing" in excellent original condition. Compare to next lot [Juno Ball Swing]. Both of these clocks are in exceptional condition with no breaks nor repairs to the statues. See close-up of paper dial which is perfect. Height 28" Reserve $2800
224. C.1900, Ansonia "Juno Ball Swing" in good condition, with some restoration. The top ribbon on the ball has been replaced with a new one from Timesavers. Otherwise this is a good original clock with minor touchup to the bronze finish on the statue and nice arm with brass finished ball [some oxidation]. Seems to run fine and is a decent example of this model. Ht 28" Reserve $3000
225. C.1905, Ansonia "Diana Ball Swing" clock in excellent original condition. Statue retains original dark bronze finish with some touch-up brushed on; the ball retains original dark silvery finish {with oxidation}, and the vertical rod has some minor rust. Still this is a very nice example of this model. This clock has been running flawlessly here for 2 months, running nearly 10 days per winding. Ht 30" Reserve: $4000
226. C.1900, French, Bronzed Spelter, Swinging Mystery timepiece. This is a large clock, the ball is 6" in diameter and the length of the arm alone is 38". The statue of Brise d’Automne {autumn breeze}, is after an original by Auguste Moreau [Title and Moreau are on a small brass plaque on base]. The statue has never been broken, and has some tasteful touchup to spots where the finish had been rubbed off. The ball got dropped at some time and was dented near the numeral 10, and some one pushed the brass out with a sharp object, resulting in small surface bumps, and then touched up the paint {I’m being hard on this – it only shows on close inspection}. The clock is otherwise original, the balls with dark green color, all numerals, suspension and other hardware intact; running. Height 39" Reserve $6000
227. C.1900, French, Bronzed Spelter, Swinging Mystery timepiece. This is a large male figure with swinging arm in outstanding condition, the statue signed Ch. Ruchot. Note industrial themes… hammer anvil, gears and 3 iron working tools. Overall excellent and running well; this clock likes to run; it you stop it and let even a small breeze in from the door, it will start again. Height 37" Note we sold the ‘cousin’ to this clock in October 1998, lot 380, for a price of $8500 + 10%.. The reserve should be low enough to tempt another bidder: $6200
228. Mixed lot: A C.1770 French Marquetry Case in the Louis XIV style, now with a C.1850 French Morbier 2-weight movement, married to the original dial. We studied this a long time, figuring it might be a 19th Century clock, but the dial and dial plate are obviously married to this movement, and a plinth added to the case to accept the iron frame of the movement. Since this clock was in a doctor’s office for the past 35 years, it appears the work was done long ago. Amazingly the workman retained the original pendulum bob, a well chased depiction of the North Wind. All of the ormolu retains original gilding and is very bright. The main case door has a single, vertical split that will need attention. The movement has not run in some time, but is complete and sound and will respond to simple cleaning. An all original floor clock of this vintage would be priceless. Height 89½" Reserve $4500
229. C.1840, English, 8-Day, Painted Dial tall clock, as-found, less weights. The dial is signed Wakefield, Hartlepool and is in generally good condition, with castle scene in the arch and bright floral corners. This is a midlands case with short door and short round columns to the side. The plinth has a horizontal dry split that will need attention. The veneer is overall attractive and will respond to restoration; no feet to case. Movement ticks and strikes; calendar wheel is missing. Height 84 ½" Reserve $1000
230. C.1860, German, Joseph Schumacher, Furtwangen, Organ Clock, as-found. This organ portion of this clock is in need of major restoration. Two of the flutes are missing and the driving mechanism for the wooden pin drum is dirty. Does retain original tune sheet {8-tunes} and the pins on the drum are in good condition. The wooden plated time and strike movement is missing hands. The clock comes with two American iron weights that are incorrect but weigh enough to power the clock [organ is spring driven]. The original dial has lovely painted scenes, a girl having fainted, her boyfriend in chains and her father chastising the pair. The dial is flanked by two winged cherubs, the left with roses and the right with a scythe; some minor paint loss. The case refinished and with later hinges. Would be $8000 if working. Height 90" Reserve $4000
231. C.1900, Swiss, Gubelin, Lucerne, Uncommon Annular Dial timepiece. The case is of well figured gray/brown mottled marble, in the shape of an urn, with bright ormolu trim on the base, sides and top. The porcelain dial rings are driven by a platform lever movement, the time indicated at a small rose on one side of the urn. A couple of minor hairlines are visible in the numerals when magnified {virtually unnoticeable}. Usually these clocks are French, and it is unusual to find this model from Switzerland. See similar clocks in Sotheby’s Meraux catalog {6-28-93}, page 124, which sold in the $5000-7000 range. Gubelin items are of the highest quality; with Gubelin signature. Height 11¼" Reserve $4500
232. C.1880, Rare French Glass Dial Mystery Clock, the swinging arm held aloft by double female statues. The movement is in the star studded ball at the bottom of the arm, and powers the arm, suspended by a normal suspension spring. A separate miniature gravity movement is in the center of the glass dial, with a tiny pendulum and ratchet that advance the well balanced hands with each swing of the arm. This clock has been professionally restored, and the ball and statues attractively refinished. It is in running order. Numerals on dial are gold leaf, but appear brown because of back lighting in photo. Dial diameter is 7 inches {17.8 cm}, overall height is 26" Reserve $15000
233. C.1880, French, Rare Mystery Clock with rotating torsion pendulum. This clock uses the same articulated crank movement {Marti mfg, Guilmet design} that is used in a traditional mystery clock with oscillating pendulum. Instead of the statue twisting back and forth, in this one the long tube under the dial twists back and forth {an imperceptible amount}. A long torsion spring, attached at the top of the tube, is holding the elaborate carousel pendulum, which rotates back and forth, seemingly without connection to the movement. This clock has been professionally restored, the canister polished [that holds the movement], and it is running briskly. Height 28" Reserve $13,000
234. C.1890, French, Rare Industrial "Lighthouse" Automaton, gong striking movement with brocot escapement, the helical spring torsion pendulum forming the animated "light" of the tapered brickwork case. The case is made of brass and was originally gilt and silver, now polished to brass, and with dust and oxidation. The minute hand is replaced {lacks spade to match hour hand}, the clock is otherwise complete and sound, runs and strikes on a gong, but would benefit from service. Height 24" Reserve $5750
235. C.1880, French, large Nautical Theme clock from the Industrial Series. The heavy automaton movement housed within the polished & nickeled capstan, rotates the brass section for about 10 hours on a winding. Note the lighthouse includes 2 time dials [opposite] for the 8-day cylinder movement, plus a barometer and circular thermometer. A large compass is at the top under the canopy. Surrounding the base are an anchor and chain, a davit with chain, a brass block with hook and a brass lifesaver -- all intertwined with a long length of brass hawser. the whole mounted to a round black marble base. Base rotating movement runs; minute hand replaced; original clock movement will require service. Note the single time movement transmits power to the opposite time dial. We sold the cousin to this in Oct ‘98, lot 383, which brought $5800 + premium. Height 20" Reserve $5200
236. C.1890, French, "Ship’s Quarter Deck" Automata clock from the Industrial Series. The bronze and silvered case is in the form of a ship’s quarter deck, set with a binnacled compass and a sailor with a coil of rope, another at the helm, the whole on a stepped black marble base on gilt brass feet. The two train signed French movement numbered 2178, and striking the hours and halves on a coiled gong. The helmsman forms the top of the compound pendulum and rocks back and forth with each tick. For reference see Sotheby’s Meraux sale {6-28-93}, lot 15, this same model sold for $13,225. Also see this model pictured in Derek Roberts’ book: Mystery Novelty & Fantasy Clocks, [1999], page 255, and on the inside rear cover leaf, Mr. Roberts is setting at his desk with one of these clocks. Height 12 ½" Reserve $9000
237. C.1890, French, the "Forgeman" Time & Strike mystery clock, from the French Industry series. This is a nice original example with old patina. Through a complex series of linkage, the oscillating movement of the crutch is converted into the up and down movement of the hammer forge, but amazingly the forge stands 6 inches to the right of the clock, and separate from it. The forgeman is seen holding his iron piece on the anvil while the hammer makes impact. The clock is inset in a "brick" firebox and boiler, and appear to be sending steam impulses to the large steam cylinder and forge to the right. A "sister’ to this clock may be seen in A Collector’s Guide to Clocks, by Derek Roberts [1992], page 103, and also in our Nov’99 catalog, lot 362, which sold for $9000 + premium. Height 16¾" Reserve $9000
238. C.1890, French "Vertical Steam Boiler" from the Industrial Series of clocks. The boiler has pipes and gauges, and the 8-day platform clock and aneroid barometer are set in the side of the round boiler. The fly-ball governor at top is driven by a separate movement in the base and runs for several hours on a winding. Both movements are in working order. Note both the clock and the barometer are the same diameter, and the 2 "sisters" to this clock, pictured in Derek Roberts’ book: Mystery Novelty & Fantasy Clocks, [1999], pages 263+265, show the clock in the bottom fire box; does not affect the value. Height 14¼" Reserve $5000
239. C1890, French Industrial Series "Lighthouse", clock in very good condition. This is the most common lighthouse in the series {and there are 6 different}, with the top beacon that revolves for several hours on a winding. The typical clock and barometer are set into the beacon, opposite each other, and between the two are Centigrade and Fahrenheit thermometer. The movement that powers the "beacon" is housed in the base, and power is transmitted up a long vertical drive-shaft which has teeth on the bottom end to engage the rotating arbor on the movement. Height 17" Reserve $2500
240. C.1890, French, Industrial Series Marine Themes clock and barometer. We’ve not seen this exact clock before, however it is very similar to one illustrated in Derek Roberts’ book: Mystery Novelty & Fantasy Clocks, [1999], page 259, fig 22-15 {Mr. Roberts’ has the barometer in the lantern instead of lower left}. It is not animated, but the number of naval items on display is interesting: there is an anchor, two block and tackle set ups, ships wheel {containing the clock}, and a light housing, top center. – the whole setting on a double stepped marble base with gilt trim. Both the clock and barometer are in working order, and have been in daily use. Note the barometer reference hand has been replaced since the photo was taken. Height 10½" Reserve $3500
241. C.1890, French, Rare Globe Clock, with machinery themes. This is another Industry Series clock we’ve not seen. On the base you have a clock, barometer, and compass. Note the barometer dial and lens have been replaced; the workings are old. The globe shows minor wear and perhaps some old touch up, but is overall very good with fine detail; it is signed E. Bertaux, Editeur, Rue Serpente 25, Paris. I do not recognize the machine tools displayed, but the stand for the globe sets atop a threaded tower with a 2 handled spanner nut, and the clock movement ROTATES THE GLOBE once per day. Movement with platform is running. Height 15" Reserve $5000
242. C.1890, French, Industrial Series clock with barometer, compass, thermometer and 2 globes, one terrestrial and one celestial. The globes turn manually as you expect, and there is no automaton involved. Like most of the clocks in this collection, the platform movement is in working order. The globes are 4½ inch in diameter, setting in stands, with the thermometer in the middle, barometer above and a compass on top. The terrestrial globe with old repairs in 3 places {visible only on close inspection}, and the celestial globe is undamaged. Both globes are signed E. Bertaux, Editeur, Rue Serpente 25, Paris . Since the photo was taken, the barometer lens and pointer have been reunited with the case {and the barometer was upside down, now upright}. Height 16" Reserve $5000
243. C.1890, French, Rare Industrial Series Steam Plant with Fly-ball Pressure Regulator. This is another unusual clock we’ve not seen before, quite interesting in operation. The fly ball governor at top which you would expect to be driven by a spring motor, is actually part of a pivoted balance, and the fast/slow adjustment is accomplished by gently moving the balls outward or inward. As in other automatons with the action driven by the clock movement, the novel motion remains visible for the full running duration of the clock; note balls only move ¼ inch in each direction {see detail images with top assembly removed and movement out of case}. The two train movement with brocot escapement is signed with Guilmet stamp and number 2237 {see Derek Roberts’ book: Mystery Novelty & Fantasy Clocks, [1999], page 253 for information on Guilmet’s number series}. The steam boiler has is flanked by a barometer and thermometer with porcelain dials, and in front of the clock stands a gimbaled compass. The clock is working and this item is in overall excellent condition. Height 18½" Reserve $12000
244. C.1890, French, Industrial "Nautical" Mantel Timepiece, with barometer and thermometer. The platform 8-day movement sets in the left barrel {with gilt staves} , with a 2¼" white porcelain dial, and is in good running order. On the other side of the anchor, in a matching barrel, is the Aneroid barometer {with hairlines in the porcelain scale}. The whole on a stepped black marble base with gilt brass footing. Clock is running. Height 9" Reserve $1200
245. C.1890, French, Industrial "Ship’s Winch" Desk Set. The clock sets in the winch with winding arbor and pawl above, a chain draped round the winch and through the top of the anchor. The shank of the anchor carries a thermometer, and behind stands a compass. The whole mounted to a veined white marble base with heavy brass footing. The case and tools with original tu-tone finish and the clock running. A sister to this clock may be seen in Derek Roberts’ book: Mystery Novelty & Fantasy Clocks, [1999], page 265, figure 22-28-D. Height 6.5" Reserve $2500
246. C.1890, French, Unusual Military theme clock from the Industrial Series. The 4 upright pillars are actually cannon, a ball at the muzzle of each, and a larger cannon ball on the base, center. At the very top of the carriage framework are a pair of cavalry spurs, you can just make out the jagged wheels at the apex. The pendulum of the clock is a bronze horse at full run. The well made bell strike movement is marked EGP, and number 259, complete and sound, but would benefit from service. The whole on a shaped and molded ebonized wood base with brass ball feet. Height 16" Reserve $1600
247. C.1910, German, Junghans, Cleopatra Swing clock in very good original condition, running fine. There are very minor pits on the statue, which retains original turned wood base. The clock arm retains original bright gilding {with some dirt and dust}. Porcelain dial is good with minor hairlines + with Junghans trademark. Overall a very good example of this model. See next 3 lots also. Height 13" Reserve $875
248. C.1910, German, Junghans, Diana, Swing clock, as-found. If you look closely, you will see that her left index finger is broken away and there is a porcelain chip in the dial by number 8. The jewel bar stripped out of her hand and someone tried to solder it in with a torch and discolored her arm to dark brown {rest of statue is very dark green}. Movement is sound and runs {could stand cleaning} Ht 13 ½" Reserve $450
249. C.1910, German, Junghans, Elephant Swing clock, in very good original condition, running. The statue retains original finish with no scrapes, and the arm retains original gilding {with a little dirt and patination}. Porcelain dial is good, with Junghans trademark intact {also with ‘Germany’ in margin}. Ht 11" Reserve $1050
250. C.1910, German, Junghans, Elephant Swing clock, as-found. Note the rear verge pivot is broken and the crystal is missing. The clock is otherwise complete and sound, and the old statue with original patina with no repairs. Original porcelain dial with Junghans trademark is perfect. Will require the assistance of a watchmaker on that pivot, as it is tiny. These seem to bring around $1000 when working, so the reserve will allow you room to work. Ht 11" Reserve $450
251. C.1970, Chelsea, Ship’s Strike, on base with ball feet, with bronze finish and in "like new" condition. This clock came to us from a fastidious collector who has maintained this clock. Silvered dial is xlnt with no wear nor oxidation; overall height 9" Reserve $750
252. C.1890, German, "Panting Dog" clock. These little novelties always get a lot of attention. While the clock is running, the dog’s tongue moves in and out and his tail wags. Although the gold paint on the tail and red tongue have been touched up, the rest of the gold finish is original. The one inch porcelain dial has minor hairlines that only show under magnification. Retains original hands. For its’ age, this novelty is way above average in condition, and is sure to attract a lot of attention. One day movement, marked Meyer. Height 5¾" Reserve $2500
253. C.1875, German, Lenzkirch, Mini Mantel timepiece on attached base, with French style ormolu mounts. All authors on German clock making have pointed out that Lenzkirch, more than any other German clock firm, adopted production techniques and movement formats similar to the French. Many of their movements would be impossible to distinguish from Paris makes were it not for the Lenzkirch trademark. This little clock, in the Louis XVI style, bears serial number 563298; it has been in storage and would benefit from service, and the case has lost some of its finish. The original gold finish ormolu is still bright {casting of cupid below the dial}, the porcelain dial is perfect, and clock retains original Lenzkirch key + numbered pendulum. Brass feet are slightly bent. Height [w/ base] 13½" Reserve $700
254. C.1900, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 2" in walnut, and in good original condition. There are half a dozen chips in the veneer around the bezel and on the bowtie, a common malady with walnut, but it does not look so bad. Still the dial is original and excellent [with minor flakes]. Retains original label in base of clock. Clock was shipped at some time with pendulum in and the pendulum poked the label in several spots. Retains original weight, pulley, hands, scale, hardware. Height 34" Reserve $900
255. C.1850, French, Quarter Striking Candle stand clock under dome. The movement is signed "Pons", and with the retailers name, Potonie¢ Leon, Paris fired into the dial and also stamped into the movement. The pendulum is a later replacement, but this clock is otherwise in excellent original condition, with nice porcelain dial {with blue numerals}, great gilding on the ormolu stand and no cracks nor chips in the dome. Ht 14" Reserve $1900
256. C.1870, French, in the style of Louis XIV, a miniature ormolu and bronze figural clock in excellent condition, and complete with dome + base with brass string inlay. This has a very small and well made platform movement… note unique design allowing removal of the spring barrel and unusual Geneva stopwork on the barrel end. The movement is contained in a small bronze sphere {about 2.8" diameter}, with a hinged rear door that is part of the sphere. The globe is nestled in the trunk of a tree, and surmounted by a winged angel, holding the twisted corners of a blanket that support an infant. I don’t know whether she is ‘bringing’ or ‘taking’ the child. Small, finely pierced gilt hands. The whole resting on a faceted block of green onyx, with a gilt bottom and 4 knurled bun feet. Height of clock 10", w/dome 14" Reserve $1100
257. C.1890, French Industrial "Centrifugal Steam Valve", with clock and barometer. The round movement has a new Swiss lever platform and is in good working order. Both the clock and barometer have porcelain dials, and both dials signed H. Cerf, Opticien du Roi, Bruxelles. The baro dial is good, the clock dial has hairlines and a small chip by 9 that could be handily repaired, and the 3 screws to retain the clock in the brass sphere were lost when it was last repaired, and they will need replacing. The clock is otherwise complete and original and with thermometer and barometer intact, and both rear dust covers present. Modest reserve should allow for minor restorations. Height 11" Reserve $900
258. C.1890, French Industrial Watch Hutch, with mechanical link to a manual bell. The brass model lighthouse is set with a thermometer. There is a knob on the side to operate the bell, which covers the beacon area, TOGETHER with a gold plated, open faced pocket watch, signed Stupenda, with seconds hand and in working order. Watch dial is washed out in this image, but is fine. Height 12" Reserve $1200
259. C.1900, French, Oval-Cloisonne’, Crystal Regulator in immaculate condition. This is as good as it gets. Note 4 column case with each column, floor of case top and bottom bands, feet and pendulum all decorated with colorful red, green and blue enamel; the whole offset by a green onyx top and bottom. Quality Japy Freeres movement strikes the hours on a gong. Dial is signed Davis Collamore & Co., Broadway, New York. If you want only one French crystal regulator, this is the one. See also lot 298 if you prefer rectangular form. Height 12 ½" [32cm] Reserve $2100
260. C.1860, French, Japy Freres, Beaucourt, Brass Cased Carriage clock , time, strike, repeat, alarm AND center seconds. This clock has many early features. The movement is signed with one of Japy’s earlier marks, an oval indicating the Grand Medal of Honour in 1855, and serial number 267 puts it at one of Japy’s early attempts to capitalize on the growing interest in the portable clock market. It has a substantial lever platform, nicely engraved and with original gilding; there is a single butterfly antenna on the lever which makes it quite visually attractive. The one piece case is with engraving on all edges and on the rear cover {shuttered}…the rear photo washed out a bit, but there is attractive floral engraving… you can see that most of the gilding is worn away, but traces remain. The clock runs and strikes, but the whole movement is oily and would benefit from cleaning. Perfect dial and good glass. A very nice example from mid-19th century. Height 6¾" Modest reserve $1650
261. C.1850, French, Ormolu Figural Clock with hand painted panes in base. This is a very sweet theme, a young girl with curly locks sitting on a fancy silk cushion with tassels, and holding her cocker spaniel in her arms, her chin resting on the dogs head. The dogs ball is on the floor to the right of the clock. The original gilding is very bright. The dial has an old repair by the numeral 11 which is not too noticeable. Has a well made silk thread movement, signed Japy Freres, and with award stamp for the year 1844; movement numbered 708. Ht 11" [28cm] Reserve $2000
262. C.1900, French, Limoge Type, Porcelain Figural clock in very good original condition. This was our most difficult clock to photograph because the rococo style case changes directions everywhere. The case has blue crossed forks trademark. A lady in waiting is reclining pensively, with cupid at her side. His quiver of arrows lays on the ground and he is playing a flute. She has a bread stick in her left hand. Facial features are in fine detail. Note 2 small defects: cupid’s flute has its end broken away and also his little finger; we looked at this for a week until we saw the damage; the rest is intact {and all fingers and toes on both figures are individual} Fancy porcelain dial with polychrome floral design….see close up. With a miniature French platform movement and finely chased and gilded hands. Height 11½" Expected to attract interest beyond the reserve of $650
263. C.1910, English, Copeland’s SPODE porcelain china clock. We tried photographing this against white and you simply couldn’t tell where the clock started or finished, so we put it on a piece of black foam and this was the result. Four winged cherubs at play with rope around a monument. The well made 8-day French movement retains original lever platform intact and is running. Porcelain dial is perfect. See Spode signature {in green}. Ht 11½" Reserve: $385
264. C.1845, French, Paul Garnier, an early 4-glass mantel regulator, as-found. This is a high quality clock worthy of restoration. Most of the original gilding has been polished off the case by an over zealous maid. The bell standard was replaced in a new position, with empty holes where the old one was attached. The porcelain dial signed Paul Garnier, and the movement with simply the number 449. Note there is not a rear panel or door on this case, but a small rear porthole. Major movement adjustments and case assembly are possible because the very top is removable, held on only by gravity. The quality of the Greek revival mounts on the case is exceptional. The minute hand was broken, and re-soldered with a segment missing, so is about 1 cm short; original matching hour hand is complete. This is a very heavy clock, 22 pounds [10kg]. Lots of potential for someone with the time to restore this one; height 13¾" [35cm] Reserve $2350
265. C.1870, French, Planchon, Palais Royal, an unusual giltwood Italian-style mantel clock. This is a very interesting clock. Planchon often made updated clocks after masterpieces of two centuries earlier. A clock by Ludovico Lanzcron, Bologna, circa 1670 has virtually the same lines as this "French Reissue". In Italy, more than any other country, there was a fascination with being able to tell the time at night with a simple glance at the clock, which usually had some type of pierced dial and provision for a small lamp or candle to light cut-outs of numerals. In our "simulated night clock" by Planchon, a central disc rotates once every two hours, with two holes to reveal smaller rotating numerals behind. You will note in the photo that it is about ¾ past 7. The seven descends below the horizon and an 8 starts up on the left side, and so on. In our example the numerals are fired porcelain, while on an original, it would have been pierced to allow the light out. This clock was restored maybe 50 years ago, and the inside and back of the case were painted an antique gray. The rectangular dial plate is painted in oil with a rustic landscape, and there is flaking and touch-up evident. Well made 8-day lever mov’t #3833, striking, signed Planchon. This clock sold at Sothebys, London, On June 5, 1997, lot 364, for $4150 Height 24" [61cm] Reserve $2500
266. C.1890, French, Serpentine with Corinthian Columns carriage clock, time, ting tang strike, with hour repeat. This is a well made carriage clock that has been in storage for 25 years. The gilding looks to be intact, but the clock is coated with dirt and nicotine. Retains original lever platform intact and all beveled glass is good. The alarm dial has a minor chip at 9 that can be touched up OK and the time dial with nearly invisible hairlines. Old minute hand does not match the hour. This is a decent carriage clock in a very unusual case style that will respond well to restoration. Height 6½" Reserve $600
267. C.1880, French, Drocourt, Paris, for Henry Capt, Geneve, brass cased carriage clock, time, strike, repeat and alarm. The cannelee case on this clock retains attractive gilding, and the beveled glass is all perfect. Porcelain dial is perfect as well {signed Henry Capt, Geneve}. The movement is signed with Drocourt’s DÕ C trademark in an oval {little carriage clock in center}, and with serial number 9471. The strike spring broke at some point, taking out a couple of teeth on the going barrel, and they have been replaced, and there is evidence of the repair. Retains original lever platform; runs and strikes, but would benefit from service. Ht 6.5" See next lot also for sister clock! Reserve $1500
268. C.1885, French, Drocourt, Paris, for Henry Capt, Geneve, brass cased carriage clock, time, strike, repeat and alarm. The cannelee case on this clock has some fine oxidation, but the beveled glass is all perfect. Porcelain dial is perfect as well {signed Henry Capt, Geneve}. The movement is signed with Drocourt’s DÕ C trademark in an oval {little carriage clock in center}, and with serial number 10020. This case was polished to brass and lacquered around 20 years ago and oxidation occurred where the lacquer was thin. Overall it is an excellent example of Drocourts work and the best that Henry Capt had to offer in Geneva. Original platform intact. Height 6.5" Reserve = $1400
269. C.1900, French, Brass Cased Carriage Clock having a beautifully detailed champleve¢ enamel case, the baroque designs in a rainbow of bright colors, covering the top, rear, and mask. Note unique stylized handle, also covered in enamel designs on all sides. The round porcelain dial, with blue Arabic numerals is excellent and clock retains original hands. The well made time and strike movement is sound and retains original platform with lever escapement. Beveled glass is good. Extra nice. Ht 6.25" Reserve $1800
270. C.1900, Swiss, Minute Repeating Mini-Carriage clock, for Black, Starr & Frost, NY, in excellent original condition. This particular clock embodies a "crystal-set" alarm mechanism {rotate crystal to set}. The time movement is wound by a stem, hidden beneath the sliding base cover; depress the stem to set the time. The alarm is wound with a small key, and the time is set with the same key from the rear of the clock. The hour, quarter and minutes are counted out when the plunger on top is depressed. Although the movement is unsigned, it was most likely made by Mathey-Tissot at Les Ponts-de-Martel in Neuchatel. This firm produced an extensive line of quality miniature travel clocks just after the turn of the century, and although numbered, they are not normally signed. Running, and repeating briskly; original gilding excellent. The base cover is engraved with the retailer: Black, Starr & Frost, N.Y. Height, less handle = 2.8", with handle 3.8" Reserve $6000
271. C.1850, French, Bechot, Brass Cased Carriage clock, time, strike, alarm and repeat, in an early multi piece cast foliate case. The lever platform is of early configuration and with butterfly extension on the lever. The layout of both case and movement are very similar to a Campbell clock pictured in Chas Allix, page 70, however the backplate of the movement is signed Bechot & Fils, a Paris, and numbered 133. Someone added knurled set knobs to the time and alarm arbors, which can be removed {friction fit}. The clock runs, strikes and repeats fine, though might benefit from cleaning. The very bottom cover and one small case screw are missing; these items could be conveniently restored. The beveled glass is good and the porcelain dial is perfect. Some gilding remains in the valleys of the foliate design. A very nice example of a mid-19th Century carriage clock. Ht 6.75" Reserve $1200
272. C.1999, Chelsea, "Millenium", Ship’s Strike clock on pedestal, new. This clock came to us from a small dealer who ordered this for a customer who later cancelled. It is new, in the Unopened box. You will be the first person to cut the factory tape on the outer box, which protects the Chelsea blue gift box inside. The retail price on this limited edition of 1000 clocks was recently raised from $3000 to $3500. This model has an engraved pedestal with the names of 16 eminent artists and scientists {Darwin, Newton, Rembrandt, etc} the intermediate base is walnut. The is your rare chance to buy a collector’s edition clock for a very special price; full warranty intact, + with sales brochure. Height 12.5" Reserve $1700
273. C.1900, Specialty Marble clock by E. Howard & Co., Boston. Please refer to Nawcc Bulletin for April 1999, page 213, wherein Dana Blackwell reviews similar model clocks for "J.E.W." These clocks were special ordered by E. F. Caldwell of New York, and are always finished to the highest standards. This movement, serial number 2510, is signed E. Howard & Co., and is the heavy 8-day marine movement with striped front plate, developed for use in the model 69. This particular clock runs well, but someone has pried off the "6" and "7" and remounted them in the black marble 180° out. They managed to chip the marble a bit in doing so {not too bad}, and that will need attending when you reverse the process. Clocks of this caliber usually bring in the $2500 neighborhood. A very heavy clock = 23 pounds. Height 11" Reserve $1500
274. C.1818, Joseph Ives, Bristol, a Connecticut Mirror clock of Ives’ unique design, with original scroll top and period finials. This clock came out of the Albert Partridge collection, and was restored around 40 years ago. The tablets look like they were repainted in place at the time, and have started to flake again. The worst thing that happened is the fellow thought the "smoke" finish was incorrect, so he painted the entire insides a dark green. This clock is otherwise a nice original piece, rare and with good original dial, hands, weights, veneer and figured maple trim. See same model pictured in Horology Americana, page 95, and in Distin & Bishop, page 252. We’ve seen these bring $4500 with original label and tablets, and this reserve reflects condition. Height, 57½" Reserve $2500
275. C.1890, French, Carved Oak Cartel clock, 8-day time and strike on a gong. The hand carved frame is profusely carved with grape leaves and scrolls, and is very 3-dimensional. The 8" wooden dial has 12 porcelain signet numerals, in good condition. The well made French movement had the tip to the minute shaft broken and the minute hand was peened on in place long ago. Now that the movement is quite dirty, you will have to attend to the shaft in order to run the clock {the movement is otherwise sound}. Every thing on the clock is original, and if you want this as a decorator, it’s about as nice as they come. Ht 26" Reserve $600
276. C.1890, French, Carved Oak Cartel clock, 8-day time and strike on a gong. The hand carved frame is well carved with cascading blossoms down each side, stained a dark English oak. The 8" wooden dial has 12 porcelain signet numerals [note unusual shape], all xlnt. The clock must have hung on a porch for some time, as the canon pinion has corroded to the hour pipe with the results that the hands will not turn. The movement appears to be sound otherwise, strike side turns freely, but you will have to remove the dial and drift apart the 2 wheels prior to operation. The minute hand was soldered once [OK], and the clock is otherwise complete and original. Very attractive carving. Height 24" Reserve $500
277. C.1885, French, Walnut Cartel Clock, 8-Day time and strike with 8" wooden dial and perfect porcelain cartouche numerals. Unique on this is the original top with a side bust of a helmeted warrior; the bottom complemented with a carved floral spray and the dial flanked by two full round Corinthian columns. Overall the clock is in excellent condition. Movement is complete and sound, runs, and would benefit from service. Height 29" Reserve $500
278. C.1870, French, Picture Frame clock, 8-Day, time and strike on a gong. The dial of alabaster {which has absorbed some nicotine over the years}, with porcelain signet numerals in royal blue [all good]. The outer frame has a couple of age cracks, but is still together. The walnut carved trim is of excellent quality, stained ebony. The dial surround is of walnut with a darker contrasting inlay in a geometric design with trefoil tips. Movement would benefit from service, but sound. Overall very good condition. Height 19" Reserve $325
279. C.1880, German, Berlin Style "Free Swinger" wall clock. The walnut case is especially nice with lower balcony, original top, and lots of little finials and buttons. There was probably a small piece of trim on the very top, but it looks OK as is. The dial center and pendulum in Art Nouveau motif. Movement complete and sound; strikes the hours and halves on a large coiled gong. A ‘way above average’ Berliner; height 44" Reserve $700
280. C.1900, German, Badische Uhrenfabrik, Art Nouveau – Berlin style free swinger. Has a well made Badische movement, serial number 5221, and usual D.R.P. markings. The square brass dial has stylized lilies that match the original pendulum {a dial center daisy is repeated on the pendulum as well}. The walnut case with full reeded columns flanking the door and with a carved top with Nouveau style; the whole with several finials. Gong and gong base also signed with Badische trademark [crescent moon +B] Overall excellent. Height 35" Reserve $700
281. C.1910, Japan, Unusual Calendar Carriage clock, with time dial to the left and the day and date to the right. We had a clock by the same company a few years ago with the time dial on the top and the calendar on the bottom—the movement identical. This one is much more substantial, the top and base of cast bronze, lightly gilded. The porcelain dial is perfect as is the beveled glass. One day movement. This was Japan’s attempt to create a very good looking clock that was inexpensive to manufacture. Height 5 ¼" Reserve $450
282. C.1930, Unmarked Musical Alarm, which is either German or Japanese. Both feathered birds are animated; the yellow one turning from side to side as the clock ticks {attached to lever pivot}, and the red one tipping up and down when the musical alarm goes off. One day movement for time. Music plays a couple of minutes. As you would expect for an item of this age, the birds are a bit dusty. This is a fairly large unit, 5" wide and 7¾" high. Reserve $385
283. C. 1965, German, Badische Uhrenfabrik, reproduction Stuhl or Zaanse clock for the Dutch market. This is the heavier 8-day model, and although dusty, seems to run and strike. These were sold commercially until recently, and are an ever-popular clock, featuring Atlas holding the world on his shoulders at top. Complete with original pear shaped weights. Strikes the hours on a bell at Atlas’ feet. Ht 19½" Reserve $85
284. C.1890, French, Large Conical Pendulum clock, as-found. This is a large and impressive clock. The case has one shortcoming, in that the transition molding got damaged and the owner had a cabinet maker create a new molding out of wood. So the quarter molding going ‘round the clock about 3" above the bottom is made of wood, painted black. This is the first time we have seen this particular male statue on any of the French mystery/novelty clocks, yet he is for sure original to the base and has always held this pendulum; note his grape leaf crown and cloth that flows from shoulder to loin. The movement is large and robust, strikes fine, but has come loose from the dial plate and needs a couple of pins [minor]; would benefit from service. This is one of several foreign clocks consigned by the de-accession committee of the American Clock and Watch Museum in Bristol, and it is offered, just to spur interest, without reserve or minimum bid. Height 38" -0-
285. C.1870, Austrian, 3-Weight Grand Sonnerie, wall regulator in an attractive serpentine case with carved floral accents. This clock is in good original condition, but has been hanging in a workshop and the movement is dusty and wants to stop. The hour side governor has been cut way down to assist striking. And one of the hooks in the 3 old weights is a cup-hook {replacements available from Timesavers}. Probably had a carved floral crest at one time. Still, for what we see today this is a well above average Vienna. Height 41" Reserve $1400
286. C.1885, French, Industrial "Steam Hammer" in very good condition. This clock has been in storage and may need some cleaning, however, it is complete and sound, no chips in marble, etc. This steam hammer and the lighthouse {lot 239} were the most popular models produced. The steam hammer is pleasing in that the up and down motion of the hammer striking the anvil continues for the full running duration of the clock. To quote from Derek Roberts’ book: Mystery Novelty & Fantasy Clocks, [1999], page 260, "The hammer forms part of a complex pendulum …..someone would put the metal to be treated below the hammer and on his signal a man in the gallery would depress the lever [showing left] , releasing the steam and actuating the hammer." Note F/Slow corrections are made by turning a nut under the central steam cap. With original movement signed Guilmet. Very good example. Ht 18" Reserve: $2700
287. C.1890, French, Industrial Series "Bow Saw", automaton mantel clock. The gong striking movement with the mark of Guilmet, the vertical jig saw connected to the movement and forming part of the pendulum, giving the illusion of "sawing" up and down as the clock runs, the case in the form of a saw bench with the operator standing behind. For literature, see Derek Roberts’ Mystery, Novelty & Fantasy Clocks, page 266, also Sotheby’s {NY}, June 28, 1993, lot 59 {Joseph Meraux Collection}. The hands have been improperly replaced, but the clock is otherwise original and sound. This is an uncommon model and difficult to find. Height 15", Width 13¼" Reserve $11,000
288. C.1760, Stephen Rimbault, London, Musical Automaton Dial, 3-fusee bracket clock. This clock plays a lively and pleasant tune on the hour, using 15 hammers on 7 bells, all the while two waiters crossing the "room" above to serve bread to seated master and lady of the house. The painted scene shows fine detail, but is dark from age and dirt, and possibly merits advice from a painting conservator. The ebonized case retains original bracket feet, gilt caryatids to the corners and pineapple finials at top. Occasionally the hour strike begins before the music, to be interrupted and resume following the tune. The Rimbault family rank amongst the finest of London makers in the 18th Century, and this three train movement is well made with original crown/verge escapement and attractively engraved backplate. For reference, see Derek Roberts’ Mystery Novelty & Fantasy Clocks, [1999], page 206, showing a similar clock. Ht 21.5" Reserve $20,000
289. C.1775, Johnson, London, Miniature Time and alarm bracket clock, fusee, with original crown/verge escapement and finely engraved backplate {foliate with birds}. This is a well made little clock with attractive proportions. The silvered dial with the maker’s name and "London" engraved in the arch, and with a central numbered disk for setting the pull-wind alarm. The well carved side frets have had some small bits replaced, but are overall excellent. There has been a small amount of shrinkage in the oak carcass and the left rear upright has been relieved to allow the door to close {looks OK}. Both front and rear door retain original locks; front escutcheon is new. The movement has been professionally cleaned and runs and alarms loudly. Ht, less handle 11½", overall 13½" Reserve: $3500
290. C.1830, English, T. H. Watkins, Birm’m., an unusual hooded clock, the movement a twin fusee with anchor ‘scape, and heavy baluster pillars. The movement is mounted to a seatboard just as if it were a tall clock, and the "hood" and short trunk are made in exactly the same fashion as an oak tall case of the same period. The movement has been cleaned and is running and striking… except that the gathering pallet is a quarter turn off, leaving the hammer in the air when it should be at rest {a simple adjustment}. Interestingly, Watkins has chosen to put the rack, snail, and gathering pallet on the rear of the back plate rather than on the front as usual. As to value, we feel this must be in the same category as a provincial 2-fusee bracket clock. Ht 19½" Reserve $800
291. C.1900, E. Howard & Co, "Regulator No. 70" in very good restored condition. The oak case has been attractively refinished to a light gold color; the baffle board in front of the weight has been replaced. The tablet is original [re-blacked from the rear], and the original dial is superb, along with good signature, a little weak to the left {see image}. Height 31" Reserve $1500
292. C.1900, E. Howard & Co., Boston, Double dial, hanging clock, with 24" wooden dials facing in each direction, and in good original condition. The photo is from the wind and adjust side. This has a large weight driven gallery style movement with gearing on the rear for the second dial. There has been some minor damage to the side shown….an overzealous child had hammered a finishing punch into the dial a dozen times; and interestingly, both dials were drilled for F/S adjust hole, and then the rear side was filled [looks to have been done at the factory]. This clock came from Al Spiller’s Store in York, Maine, where it hung for many hears on a half inch pipe mount {included, but you’ll probably make your own}. Both dials are bright and with original signatures. Outside diameter, 27" Reserve $1750
293. C.1908, German, 400-Day Miniature, less dome. We searched through the Horolovar repair guide, but were unable to find this identical plate. It is most similar to plate 1619, but with click in different location; wheel lay-out is the same. THIS IS A CUTE CLOCK, the chapter ring on the porcelain dial measuring only 1½" . Lower susp block is missing, but the clock is otherwise complete and sound, with no rust nor corrosion. Ticks robustly when actuated by hand. Best part is the brilliant ring around the dial, with all pasties still intact. The overall height of this clock is 7½" Reserve $300 [should be interesting!]
294. C.1910, German, Urania Clock Co., 400-Day, disc pendulum clock in excellent original condition {except for replacement glass dome}. See Horolovar Repair guide, plate1579. This clock is serial number 136490, and with matching serial number stamped into the pendulum. Complete with original top trim, finials, gimbal suspension and both safety rings. Height 11" Reserve $100
295. C. 1918, Warren Clock Co., Ashland, Mass. Henry Warren designed and built these truly unique battery timepieces. His patent "free pendulum" used a magnet, rather than mechanical connection to advance the hands. See Brook’s Palmers Treasury of American Clocks, page 311, clock 546 for details. These were well made and expensive when new. Original dome and gilding intact. Minor oxidation on tube from a leaky battery. Also will need a suspension spring. You will see this same model clock on display in the General Electric Co. Collection. Height 11 ¾" Reserve $450
296. C.1895, French, Crystal Regulator in a great ormolu architectural case, with reeded Corinthian columns and finely detailed capitals at all 4 corners. The porcelain dial has a chip below the 6; the rest is fine {floral wreath center and dark blue numerals}. Interestingly the movement is numbered 1941, and the bezel is numbered 1491, but they definitely came together and the workman simply transposed two of the numerals. The movement has been professionally cleaned and is running and striking well. The F/S rod above 12 is missing, so adjust on pendulum only {minor}. Heavy beveled glass is all good; mercury pendulum intact. Overall a well made clock with a great look. Height 14" And a conservative reserve of $375
297. C.1900, French, Red Onyx 3-Piece Crystal Set in very nice condition. There are some hairlines in the fancy porcelain dial that only show on the closest inspection – totally absent in the photos shown. Otherwise, this is a great set with fabulous ormolu mounted urns and the clock itself surmounted by a detailed and well chased lion. The gilding on all the parts is still bright. The quality bell strike movement is numbered 47888 and with pendulum length given as 140mm {I wish they all used that format}. Lacy cast hands; original mercury pendulum intact. You do not often see this red and white mottled onyx; very impressive. Height 19" Reserve $1200
298. C.1895, French, Onyx & Brass Crystal Regulator, the bow front door flanked by full standing columns with Corinthian capitals and urn bases, the central shafts decorated with blue, white and red cloisonne, and the roof & base moldings, along with the dial and large bun feet similarly decorated. The gilt dial with both enameled bezel and dial center; the dial signed: A La Gerbe d’Or, a Chapus, 86 Rue Rivoli, Paris. The well made Marti bell strike movement also bearing the full signature of Gerbe d’Or. The onyx top and base are in good condition, unbroken, with only minor corner abrasion. All glass bears a heavy bevel, all perfect except for the front glass with a top right corner chip. Mercury pendulum intact. An exceptional crystal regulator. Height 12 ½" Reserve $1400
299. C.1895, French, Fancy Crystal Regulator, with 4 full standing columns, each decorated with cloisonne’ enamel in red, white, blue and aqua, and the dial surround and mercury-vial pendulum, as well as the top molding, base shield and 4 button feet with matching enameling. The quality round French movement is numbered 3940-411 and retains original hands. The gilt dial has some oxidation spots and some of the painted numerals are partially rubbed away. Still, this is a well made and attractive clock in good running order. Height 11" Reserve $1000
300. C.1900, Ansonia Royal Bonn "La Bretagne" [Britain], Porcelain china clock in very good original condition. This was one of Ansonia’s more popular models, appearing in catalogs from 1895 through 1915; see Ly’s Ansonia book, page 616 for 4 different decorative designs. This particular one is with a tri-color scheme, lime green at top, down to yellow in the center and forest green at the base. The hand painted iris, done in yellow and dark pink, are of exceptional quality. The dial and case are excellent; the movement is complete and sound, but is very dirty and but will require service. Bonn trademark is especially prominent. Will clean up nicely. Height 15" Reserve $1000
301. C.1904, Ansonia "La Manche" Royal Bonn china clock in very good condition, except for a 1½" old crack extending short distance from the rear service port – see image. The rest of the clock is very good – perfect open ‘scape dial, original hands, and very colorful hand painted flowers in bright colors; base color is a very light magenta. Although it would benefit from service, is running and striking fine. Ht 14" Res: $600
302. C.1880, Seth Thomas "LINCOLN" in walnut and in generally very good condition. The dial was repainted around 20 year ago and with some wear {actually looks very good}. The original finish is intact, but the base got damp and the base molding lacks finish; other minor nicks and scrapes. Retains original hands, nickel finish pendulum with sharp damascening With old weights and running and striking fine. Height 27" Reserve $800
303. C.1904, Seth Thomas, Marble Dial No. 1 in excellent original condition. These are very well made clocks, the dials with bolts set into the back side of the dial, secured to a heavy wood frame into which long fillister type screws from the side of the case to retain the dial; hence there are no unsightly screws showing on the front of the dial. The case has been damp and some of the side paint is missing, however the rest of the clock is in xlnt order; counter weighted hands. Heavy 15 day double spring movement is clean and in good running order. Should be transported by car {special packaging required if shipped} The chapter ring is 17" and the diameter is 20" Reserve $600
304. C.1897, Baird Clock Co., Chicago, Ill. Diamond Black Leather Oil, advertising clock. A similar clock may be seen in the book Baird Advertising Clocks, by Jerry Maltz, {1998} pictured on page 79. Chicago clocks came at the end of Baird’s career , were made for less than a year, and few survive. This dial has some rust and water stain, but there has been no attempt to restore it, nor the lower panel [good!!]. The case itself has been refinished to a maple color and is quite attractive; a couple of screws have been added to help hold it together. The original label has darkened a bit from being varnished over, but is still intact and legible. Overall this is a very good example of this model; ht 29¾" Res: $1500
305. C.1890, Waterbury Clock Co., White Onyx with bronze accents mantel clock. Note the trim at the top is from another item and has been glued onto this case; lion drops at the side are original. Uses good rack & snail 8-day movement and fancy open ‘scape dial, each numeral in a gilt circle. Clock is clean and running; ht 11 ½" Reserve $250
306. C.1885, New Haven 8-Day "Derby" in very good original condition. The items that keep this from being excellent are both finial tips missing and the fancy nickeled pendulum is about 1/3 rusted. Clock retains original between-the-plates alarm mechanism and excellent original tablet. Runs. Height 18" Reserve $250
307. C.1935, German, Jahresuhrenfabrik, Year Running "Louvre" model in excellent original condition with original heavy glass dome. Taking the photo we managed to snap the suspension wire, but both ends are there. Good porcelain dial with poly-chrome wreath décor. Ht 17" Res:$250
308. {Lot of 2} C.1910, German, Jahresuhrenfabrik, 400-Day Crystal Regulator in restored condition, but with big dial chip around 9:30. Beveled glass is good & seems to run OK; together with a later Jahresuhrenfabrik clock that you can use to swap the dial [overall dial size is about right, but the chapter ring on the later clock is slightly larger]. Later clock lacks pendulum and winding arbor needs work, ticks OK. Height 11. One bid for both items; reserve = $225
309. C.1905, Ansonia Clock Co., "Prism" Crystal Regulator, as-found. This clock has been in storage and is a bit dirty and the rear door glass is chipped. However, it retains original jeweled sash and perfect porcelain dial with open ‘scape, and is certainly worth ordering a new glass for. Original pendulum and hands intact; white spot above 2 is from flash; ht 10¾" Reserve $350
310. {lot of 2} C.1953, German, 1> Schatz mini 400-Day, with black enamel trim [with some chips and wear], and with original 3-ball pendulum – lower susp block is missing; fork intact. Original dome with hole in top for retainer {ring handle lacking} And 2> a Kern & Sons, 400-Day, in chrome, with neat overlay Art Deco dial mask. Suspension spring and fork are missing, but clock is otherwise complete and sound. Note retains original heavy glass dome; clock is dirty. 9" & 12" Reserve [total] $200
311. C.1908, German, Kienzle Clock Factories, a well made 400-day clock with rare mercury vial pendulum. See Horolovar, 10th Ed, plate #1163 {less word Germany}. Since the Horolovar Repair Guide was published, it has been well documented that these mercury pendulums appear on several brands, and are not exclusive to Becker. The vials are perfect with no chips, and the mercury is intact. 2 ½" porcelain dial has stylized Arabic numerals and is perfect. Serial number 129697. Old heavy dome. Height 11" Reserve $750
312. C.1910, German, Badishe Uhrenfabrik, uncommon 400-day clock with "3-Ball" pendulum. This clock is in original, as-found condition, dirty, but worthy of restoration. Base and columns are well oxidized. Typical Badische movement with lantern pinions is intact and ticks fine; suspension and fork missing. Original porcelain dial with "Crescent-B" trademark is xlnt. Retains original heavy glass dome {setting beside clock}. Height 10.5" Reserve $175

The movement has been recently cleaned and is in good running order. The minute hand, although German is a half inch too short for this dial. The dial is well made, with cast cherub spandrels, + engraved and silvered chapter ring [some loss of black wax], and with original plaque reading "J. E. Caldwell & Co., Philadelphia". Other than the short hand, this clock is in good original condition. Ht 15" Reserve $650
315. C.1950, German, Oswald Uhrenfabrik, Rotating Eye clock, molded in the from of a dog, and in virtually like new original condition. This is a one owner from Maine, and shows no signs of ever having been apart. Retains original green felt bottom {with minor wear} and Oswald foil decal. The rear cover is marked "Oswald-West Germany". It runs for a while and stops, I am sure because it is dry. We’ve had a few of these, but none this nice. Height 6" Reserve $300
316. C.1890, French, Marble & Bronze clock in unusual colors. The case and moldings are nicely grained gray marble, not often seen, and the mounts are heavily silvered bronze. Quality round French bell-strike movement with Marti award trademark, and numbered 953, and with gilded brass hands. Note front glass is missing. Height 16" Reserve $225
317. C.1880, German, Black Forest, for the English market, a short drop octagon wall regulator with wooden plated 30 hour movement. This clock has been nicely restored & the dial numerals strengthened. The movement is in good running order, striking on an external iron bell, however, the pins that hold the winding stops have sheared and need renewing to hold the stops on. [The clock will function without these stops in place, you just have to be more careful in winding.] The walnut veneer case has fine brass inlay and a fine English look; a lot of clock for the money. Height 22¼" Reserve $200
318. C.1875, Gebruder Resch, Ebensee, Austria, 3-Weight, Grand Sonnerie wall regulator, rod strike. The well made "Remember" trademark movement is complete and sound, but dirty, and not original to the case {old screw holes hidden by existing bracket}. The old pulleys do not match; weights are new. The walnut case is missing lower left return molding + bottom center finial, and the old top shows evidence of wood worm damage, but case is otherwise complete, and could be restored to a nice clock by a patient workman. Porcelain dial is bright with no chips, but faint hairlines. Clock has been in storage in Liechtenstein. Generally fair to good condition. Height 47" Reserve $675
319. C.1880, German, Gustav Becker, 2-Weight wall clock in the Viennese style. This clock is as-found and in need of work. The dial was broken and reglued, and with small chip missing. The center shaft has broken off at the pin hole and the arbor peened over to hold the hand on. The impulse pin is missing from the crutch. The movement is otherwise complete, all wheels turning. Suspension spring is too long. Lastly the mounting bracket is not original to the movement and the studs have been relocated to accommodate the holes in the rear plate; pulleys taped to case; weights new {not pictured}. The case has been varnished over with dark varnish. Although this would fall into the "major restoration" class, it has a good look, all finials are present and our reserve price should tempt the handy workman, even for the case alone. Height 51" Reserve $375
320. C.1875, Austrian, 3-Weight, Grand Sonnerie wall regulator, as found, from storage. This clock has a well made Viennese movement [dirty], on a 4-post mount that is not original [stubs of old slide mount are apparent]. The dial has hairline cracks. The oak case is missing top left return moldings [2], but otherwise has a lot of character and will restore OK. Weights are new. You will need a crank with a very small outer diameter to fit through the winding grommets. Hands old, with repairs. From Liechtenstein; generally good condition; ht 48" Reserve $675
321. C.1875, German, 2-Weight Regulator in the Viennese style. This is basically a good clock that needs some work – cleaning & gluing. The pin that holds the hands on is sheared off in place and needs drifting out. The movement and bracket are original to the case, serial 56314. There are half dozen small trim moldings missing from the tu-tone case {walnut with black accents}. Finally the pendulum has a few small dents that detract. On the positive side, it has been running and striking here in the office, and should respond well to basic restoration. [Suggest replacing the nylon filament with woven dacron]. The porcelain chapter ring is excellent; center with minor hairlines. Original weights, pulleys and hands. Height 49" Reserve $550
322. C.1880, German, Gustav Becker 3-weight grand sonnerie regulator, as-found. This clock needs major restoration. Although the movement fits the Becker mount in the case, the damaged dial is from another clock and does not fit—dial feet have been bent and dial forced over the arbors; one strike hammer missing; weights and pulleys new {smooth weights}, hour hand tip broken off, NO TOP trim for case. Movement serial number 255972. The case is essentially sound and no extra holes in backboard. Fancy etched pendulum is dirty, but no dents. To repeat, the parts are good but you will have major work and a different dial to come up with before you can operate this clock. Height 42" The case alone is worth the reserve of $450
323. C.1880, Austrian, 2-weight Vienna Regulator in fair to good, as-found condition, LESS top. The double door style case is missing brass trim around the porthole; brass trim on top and bottom of case intact. The well made Viennese movement is dirty, but sound and complete, numbered 41847, and original to case; etched dial center matches etched pattern on pendulum. Two small holes in dial center where a small retailers name plaque once was. Weights and pulleys are new {smooth}. Height 40" When you figure the perfect 2-weighters are bringing $2000, this should certainly attract interest at a reserve of $450
324. C.1885, German, Gustav Becker, 3-Weight grand sonnerie wall regulator, as-found. There is NO top, and top left return molding is missing. There are quite a few wood worm holes in the case. The well made movement is complete and sound, serial number 505716; note this is a ROD strike unit, and with original rods in the case. However, the rods were hitting the picture frame molding in the case back and a workman chipped grooves in the molding to let the rods pass through {this is unsightly and will need attention}. Note attractive finials with circular grooves at 45° angle. Weights are NEW. Height 40" Movement alone should be worth the reserve of $500
325. C.1890, German, Gustav Becker, 2-Weight wall regulator in the Viennese style, as-found, with old top. See unusual double door style with square opening at top {missing brass accents}; note bottom side pieces of case is new {and not well done}, the little carving at bottom is old. Good Becker movement is original to the case, but the dial is from another clock and with damage; pendulum with small dents [4 or 5]; hands original; weights new. Generally in fair to good restorable condition; movement needs cleaning and case needs proper finishing; ticks and strikes. Ht 48" Reserve $400
326. C.1880, Austrian, Gebruder Resch ‘Remember’ trademark, 3-weight grand sonnerie wall regulator, as-found. Note movement is not original to the case, and the Gothic case has trim moldings on top & bottom missing. See unusual side columns which are flat with little leaves carved in top to bottom, and with a full flower at the top of each. Some newspaper behind the movement got wet and the gongs and rear screws are all rusty, however, the rest of the movement did not suffer so badly and the strike trains both work fine and the center train ticks OK. Dial is generally good with minor hairlines in the center; hands are later. Note there are NO pulleys with this clock; weights are new; key lock door has no key. Use for parts or major restoration. Height 40" Reserve $500
327. C.1885, German, Gustav Becker, 2-Weight Wall regulator in the Alt Deutsch double door style, as found, dirty, and with new pine top & bottom trim. The movement is not original to the case {although the extra holes are well hidden behind the existing bracket}. However this is a good, rod-strike movement, and is running and striking OK {would benefit from service}; hands and good porcelain dial are original. If you are a good cabinet maker and can replace the top and bottom, you will end up with an attractive clock. Pend bob is good; weights are new. Height 40" This modest reserve should tempt the most conservative buyer: $450
328. C.1900, German, 2-Weight Walnut wall regulator in the Vienna style and in complete and good condition, but dirty. Note case is complete with original top {top 3 finials replaced}, and with original movement {dirty but sound}. The only minor items missing from the movement are the two winding hole grommets {available from parts houses}. Both the movement and the porcelain dial are signed with the Junghans trademark in an 8 pointed star, and the hands appear original as well {note they are the same as Remember hands, whose factories were bought by Junghans}. Neat 5 spoke star pulleys; new weights; will clean up; ht 44" Reserve $600
329. C.1910, German, Gustav Becker, 2-Weight wall regulator in oak, as-found. The movement is not original to the case, and there are several extra holes present… a good candidate for a sheet of oak veneer. However, the well made Becker movement is a rod strike model, complete and sound, with perfect dial and original hands, as well as rod gong base signed "GB" also. The veneer on the base of the case is loose as well, with chips and could be veneered when you do the back. Weights new; will respond to restoration; height 45" Reserve $450
330. C.1875, Austrian, 3-Weight Grand Sonnerie wall regulator, as-found, in distress. Ok, so now we have your attention; this clock has possibilities. It has a well made Viennese movement that needs a couple of screws that are missing {gong standard actually soldered to back plate, but will come off OK}. The movement is not original and there are an extra set of slide holes in the back. The case back is warped, veneer loose, side glass missing; 1 finial missing; no veneer on side stretchers; weights new. Strikes and tries to run through it all. I know the photo looks great …..and a patient workman could make it look better. Height 47" Reserve $500
331. C.1895, Austrian, Gebruder Resch "Remember" trademark, 2-weight Vienna regulator, as-found, walnut case LESS top and missing top right return. The movement is dirty, but sound and complete; porcelain dial with hairlines and a chip at 4 that has been filled in. One extra set of holes in back where the original bracket was moved ever so slightly. Movement is definitely original to case; weights new. This clock has good potential; runs and strikes; ht 44" Reserve $500
332. C.1875, German, Gustav Becker, 2-weight Vienna regulator, as-found, LESS top and bottom finial. This is basically a good clock. The walnut veneered front door has a dry split in the center, which could be dealt with by a cabinet maker. The well made Becker movement, serial number 93,538 runs and strikes, but would benefit from cleaning. The porcelain dial is perfect and the hands, pulleys, pendulum and beat scale are original. Replacement tops are available from several suppliers. Weights new. Height 38" Reserve $475
333. C.1895, German, Schlenker & Kienzle, Small 2- weight regulator, as-found. Note the movement is NOT original to the case, and there are extra holes in the back. The top trim is newly made and not of the right style; door split top and bottom. The numerals on the dial were not fired in well enough and parts of them have worn off. The well made movement with appropriate ‘flying clock’ trademark, and serial number 45,146; note center minute shaft is broken at the outer pin hole – there is room to drill a new hole., AND the barrels have seized against the great wheels. Barely ticks and strikes, and will have to come apart for cleaning. The dial center and pendulum with matching etched pattern. Weights new. Note pendulum rides about 5 inches off the bottom of the case. These smaller Viennas are hard to find. Ht 39" Reserve $400
334. C.1915, Sessions Clock Co, Forestville, Conn, Oak Cased Store Regulator in good condition with original finish, dial, tablets and pendulum. The one shortcoming is a missing suspension leader {about $2}. The dial has some discoloration, but is very good. Sessions trade info on bottom of dial. A decent clock; ht 38" Reserve $275
335. C.1876, Seth Thomas, Office Calendar No. 7, in walnut, and in fair to good condition. There are some flakes in both original dials, and a few veneer chips around the bezels. Still, everything there is original and retains inside label {a bit dark}. Also original rollers are quite dark. This is a perpetual calendar, correcting for short months and leap year. This size is quite in demand. Height 26½" Reserve $500
336. C.1885, Ansonia Clock Co, "KOBE" ionic wall clock, 8-day, as-found. This clock originally had an alarm, which is now missing {see center dial opening}. Retains original paper dial [coming loose from the pan]. Case refinished; hands and tablet appear to be replacements. Fancy pendulum intact. Runs; height 21½" Worth $550 in perfect condition; reserve on this one = $250
337. C.1885, Ansonia Clock Co, "KOBE" ionic wall clock, as-found. This case has been refinished, and the paper dial is new; fancy hands are from another clock; tablet looks old. No label. 8-day time and strike; pendulum is plain {should have grid and leaves}. Still a decent decorator and a popular model; height 21 ½" Reserve $225
338. C.1860, French Miniature Figural Clock, a winged Trojan playing a lyre. The quality of the ormolu is very nice and details are excellent. Currently has a Swiss bar type key wound lever movement, probably had a verge to begin with. The dial with hairlines, and the minute hand broken off. And with a modern plastic dome and base. Runs. Height of clock, 7¾". With dome and base 11". I think the consignor is reaching a bit with his reserve of $1000
339. C.1875, French, Giant Ormolu Mantel clock, the central tower profusely decorated with scrolls and faces, and supported by 4 giant gargoyles eating grapes. The tower is surmounted by a large urn with acanthus swags. The dial with individual cartouche numerals, all perfect. The movement is clean and going; suspension spring needs renewing [$2]. It is all one man can do to lift this clock; impressive. Ht 27¾" Reserve $2500
340. C.1880, French, 3-Piece Empire Mantel set in good condition. This is a magnificent set, and certainly unusual to find with the candelabra intact. Each candelabrum and the basic case of the clock are bronze, and the ormolu mounts are bright gold – a pleasant contrast. The shortcoming on this clock is the dial which was repainted around 25 years ago before professional replacements were available. It looks fine from 3 feet away but the blemishes show when you get close. The round bell strike movement is running, but would benefit from service. Height 21½" Reserve $3000
341. C.1920, American, Large Glass Dial Mystery clock of unusual construction. The heavy plate glass dial is 15" in diameter, has gold leaf Roman numerals, and a fine steel pivot in its center. It is supported at the top of a heavy brass tube which is set into a large 4-leg spelter casting. The hour hand and minute hand are independent of each other, one designed to rotate once in 12 hours, the other once each hour, each riding on the center pivot. The end of each balanced hand contains a 30-hour watch movement, driving a counter weight so that gravity forces the hand around {special winder provided}. Each movement has numbers 1 to 12 inside to assist in setting the time. No maker apparent. When running it provides a truly mystifying clock. Ht 31½" [80cm] Reserve $4500
342. C.1920, German, Junghans, "Monkey Business" novelty clock. I’ve not seen one of these for over 10 years. A line runs up from the movement to actuate the lower jaw and eyes of the monkey who is sitting on a pedestal. The eyes move up and down slowly and the jaw opens and closes, apparently in amazement at the wondrous things the monkey is reading in the book. The dial with traditional J in a star trademark. Intended to run for a day, the most I could get it to go was for around 6 hours, but it is all intact and original and certainly eye catching. Monkey is bronzed spelter with a painted tin back. Height 9½" [24cm] Reserve $1350
343. C.1930, Swiss, 800 Silver, Singing Bird box in good condition. The silver is adorned with lions and birds on the side, the top repousse lid with a winged cherub, and finely cut filigree silver hides the mechanism while the bird is singing. The corners of the top have well detailed flowers; minor wear and oxidation to case, nothing beyond what is expected for the age of the item. The bellows have been renewed a nd this bird sings with tremendous gusto, lively and loudly, his wings and beak twittering all the time. 4 x 2.5 x 1.8 inches Reserve $2600
344. C.1890, German, Walnut "Balcony" Clock, in excellent original condition. The movement by Kienzle {flying clock mark}, is well made with solid plates, cut pinions, and dead beat escapement; serial number 366277; and with an attractive embossed dial with Arabic numerals. The case is especially nice with galleries top and bottom and with lots of twists and turns and buttons. Minor nicks and scrapes as you would expect for a clock of this age. Strikes the hours on a coiled wire gong. Very impressive. Height 39" Reserve $2300
345. C.1998, Hungarian replica of a Viennese mini Laterndluhr {style of 1810}. This new clock has been finished to very high standards, and from a few feet away it looks antique. The cabinet maker picked the finest Carpathian burled elm for his veneer, along with satinwood edging. The silk thread movement is an authentic copy of a 2-day duration original, and with a delicate cast and engine turned bezel. You will need to make a key for this, as the hole in the dial is especially small. We had to use the small end of a carriage clock key just to wind for the photo. An original mini from 1810 would be many thousand dollars. Height 20½" [52cm] Reserve $1650
346. C.1835, Seymour Williams & Porter {Unionville}, cased and sold by Carter & Weller, Stockbridge, Madison County, N.Y., a miniature time and alarm half column and splat, as-found. The label has a few bits missing at the bottom, but is generally good and fully legible {coming loose}. The movement is missing the alarm disc {but otherwise complete}, and the hands are later. Stenciling is long gone from the columns; tablet new. Splat & chimneys are original. A bit of a restoration project, but an uncommon clock worthy of your effort. Height 25" Reserve $150
347. C.1895, Waterbury "NORWALK" walnut time and strike mantel clock in excellent condition, the case nicely refinished and clock running. Also with original signed movement, dial, and key; PLUS both rear labels in bright condition. But the best part is the optional Jacot’s Patent pendulum with center stud and scale for fast/slow adjustments. A nice walnut. Height 22¼" Reserve $150
348. C.1890, Self Winding Clock Co., New York, Self Winding No. 7, less top. Note dimension reflects absence of 5 ½" high broken arch top with finials. This is a cherry case that has been stripped and never properly finished. However the dial is original {has been touched up}, and we hooked the top leads to a lantern battery, and it took off. Has traditional Seth Thomas hardware and smooth pendulum bob. Generally good condition; ht 40½" Reserve $475
349. C.1870, English, Wm. Evans, Birmingham, an attractive scroll frame skeleton clock. This frame pattern is often seen with a pendulum detent and sometimes a chronometer escapement, however, this one has a more conventional recoil escapement. The wheels are all nicely spoked {including motion wheels}, and the original chain is intact. Much of the silvering has been rubbed off the dial, but it is still quite legible. Information on this maker and his work can be found in the book titled British Skeleton Clocks, by Derek Roberts [1987]. Note the dial bears retailer’s signature: AGAR & SONS, BURY. NO dome. Height 17¼" Reserve $1100
350. C.1890, French Black Marble & Onyx Mantel clock in very good condition, with original gold filled incising intact. Has lots of contrasting brown onyx trim, and full round columns on each side. Retains original open escapement dial, with winding grommets and with attractive stylized numerals. Note F/S rod is absent; adjust from rear only. This a very heavy clock and should not be shipped; pick-up in Salem is recommended. Strikes the hours on a flat wire gong. Ht=11", W=18" Reserve $300
351. C.1909, Seth Thomas, "Florence" inlaid mantel clock, in generally good condition. The case has been refinished; evidence of an old presentation plaque on the base molding; veneer on the back side is flaking off {very common}. The porcelain dial is good – small hairlines outside 3 are apparent when bezel is open – note dial is signed Tilden-Thurber Co. {fired in}. A little TLC will produce a $400 clock. Ht 12¼" Reserve: $200
352. C.1909, Seth Thomas, "Whitby", inlaid mantel clock in very good, as-found condition. This clock is from an attic in Southern Mass, and the original finish is crazed. Movement is complete and sound, and running, but would benefit from cleaning. The base board {that holds the gong} has cracked. Retains original hands, pendulum, gong, and hardware throughout; rear veneer intact; dial perfect. {Inlay does not show well through old finish} Ht 12" Reserve $195
353. C.1910, French Westminster Wall Clock in a Louis XVI style wall case, and with quality Gustav Becker movement {original and with unusual stamp – Fabrique Allemain, made by Becker especially for the French clock company}. This is a very attractive case with S curve or bombay sides, all with attractive burled walnut veneer, accented at top with ormolu trim, and the door with a piece of heavy beveled glass. Plays Westminster tune on the quarters on straight steel rods. Original silvered dial with minor tarnishing and orig hands. Runs but would benefit from service; the case with a dozen or so wood worm holes. Height 33" Reserve $400
354. C.1835, Henry Terry, Plymouth, Conn {invented by Eli Terry on label}, short transitional shelf clock, with some restoration. The splat is a piece of mahogany and improper. The tablet was replaced maybe 50 years ago, as it is flaking again in several spots, and the putty is extremely hard….has a decent look. Label with some tears but very legible; stenciling on columns weak but visible. If you have a friend with some old case parts, you might come up with a stenciled splat to replace this one, or check with Karen Larson. Best part of the clock is the absolutely fabulous dial—it may look new in photo, but it is original!! Height 29" Reserve $450
355. C.1888, Terry Clock Co., Pittsfield, Mass, the HIGHLAND, walnut shelf clock, with both labels. Although the clock has been refinished, it retains original dial, pendulum and hardware. This gilt pendulum design was unique to Terry shelf clocks. The rear model label is dark from the walnut stain the refinisher used. 8-day, runs and strikes. Good clock for the Pittsfield collectors. Note minor differences between this and earlier model, next lot. Both cases are correct, but different. Ht 22½" Reserve $200
356. C.1884, Terry Clock Co., Pittsfield, Mass, the HIGHLAND, walnut shelf clock, with THREE labels {rear label with model and manufacturer, interior beat scale, and interior instruction label with details on operation of the unique strike-set mechanism}. The only small negative on this clock is he new ‘rub-on’ design on the old tablet.. the rest is wonderful. This clock has more case detail than the above clock of the same model; note scalloped base with gilt design, and incised burled panels either side at top. This is time, strike [including ½ hours on cathedral gong] and alarm. Strike is set by turning minute hand backwards {unique to this company}. Case refinished. Height 22 ½" Reserve $250
357. C.1890, French for Tiffany & Co, New York, a once elegant ormolu mantel clock that has been polished weekly by the made and only traces of the original gilding remain. Having said that, this is a clock of high quality, the case with "built in" base, and all tips and extensions are intact. The well made round lever movement is signed Tiffany & Co, New York on BOTH the dial and rear plate. One side strap that holds movement has failed and needs renewing. This clock will restore to an elegant piece. Ht 16" Reserve $500
358. C.1875, E. N. Welch, Forestville, Turret model, probably made under contract for the American Clock Co in New York. See sister clock in last sale, lot 58-c, which sold for $325. This clock has a double barrel pendulum, and retains original signed Welch movement & original finish. Orig paper dial with minor wear; hands have been heavily painted, so I can’t tell whether they are new or old. 8-day, strikes on a bell. An uncommon clock in good condition; runs; height 20½" Reserve $200
359. C.1886 {dated on case back} "MOBILE" model by Seth Thomas, from their city series, in walnut. This clock is in excellent original condition, with only very minor dial flakes. Retains original hands, dial, pend, cathedral gong, tablet AND finish, along with a good label inside case bottom [some wear on label from the key being tossed inside weekly]. Button latch door. If you are working on a City Series, this will be a welcome addition. Ht 22" Reserve: $225
360. C.1885, E. Ingraham & Co., a good looking walnut mantel clock, side pilasters with carved trim and an inset base, typical of Ingraham’s creativity before pressed oaks were the rage. This is an 8-day t/s/alarm with original dial, hands, pendulum and finish intact. Has a good Victorian look to it and is running and striking. Height 21" Reserve $175
361. C.1942, Chelsea Clock Co., "Chelsea" model ship’s strike wall clock, 6" dial, screw bezel, made for Wilfred O. White, Boston {engraved on dial} now on a custom mahogany stand {finest quality}, with wheel spokes. The serial number of the clock is 314387 putting it in early WWII production. Interestingly there is a spurious brass plaque on the rear with a hand written inscription as follows: Yacht "Corsair", J. P. Morgan, 11-15-26. The gentleman who consigned the clock, bought it at Brimfield and was unable to glean additional info on the history of the clock. Dial with minor pitting; runs but would benefit from service. Diameter: 7" Reserve $400
362. C.1948, German, Schmid-Schlenker, novel "Flower Clock", the dial of which is the center of the dark red cloth flower at top. Wind and set one day movement from base. We’ve not had one of these unusual novelties for a while, and this is a good example. Albeit the flowers are a little droopy, they are original. Height 8" Reserve $275
363. C.1970, Japan, Fuji Clock Co., 8-Day swinging mystery timepiece on a silvered white metal elephant, mounted to a composition base. Base and movement clearly marked Japan. Unlike the turn of the century models these are patterned after, you only have to wind these once a week. Height 11" Reserve $275
364. C.1895, French, Conical [rotary] Pendulum Annular dial alarm clock in excellent original condition, signed Farcot. We’ve had several of these clocks in the past, and this model is pictured in Tardy’s La Pendule Francaise , part II, page 472, and is classified as "Horloge de table Fantasie". This one with Farcot name and trademark, and with original alarm ‘set’ hand intact. Note pendulum fine adjustment is by thumb screw and ribbon at the top. Serial number 20813. See also next lot by same company. Height 6 ¾" Reserve $500.
365. C.1890, French, Conical [rotary] Pendulum alarm clock in very good condition. This uncommon clock, also by Farcot, is serial number 17850, slightly earlier than above clock, and interestingly bears the printed ad on the paper dial: Reviel a Marche Silencieuse, which freely translates to silent running alarm. The movement is one day with separate alarm and time trains. Unlike the gazebo affair in the previous lot, the pendulum is suspended from a cast lyre which surrounds the main case, the whole supported on a cast iron base [base repainted and center stud renewed]. Runs and alarms; ht 10" Reserve $800
366. C.1890, French, Gilded Spelter Conical clock, rotary pendulum. The case has art themes—an easel and cameo at the right, and a large winged cherub at left, and with garlands of peony along the base. This is a nice striking model in good condition, with original gilding, and with some minor repairs to the case [one wing on cherub and the hook re-soldered in his hand], and minor touch up with gold paint on wear spots. Like the previous 2 lots, the pendulum hangs via thread suspension and moves in a rotary motion that circumscribes the shape of a cone while running. Porcelain dial is excellent and with original moon hands. Movement cleaned and running. Height 14" Reserve $2200
367. C.1875, F. Kroeber, NY, "Noiseless Rotary No.1" in excellent original condition, with original bottom label {dark with age} and dome. The dial is a little discolored, but not so bad as to want to replace it. The movement runs and strikes fine, and retains the original pendulum in perfect condition [a critical item on this clock]. If you collect Kroebers and do not have a Rotary #1, this is a nice example. Height 21½" Reserve $4200
368. C.1984, Swiss, Faberge, "Swan Lake Musical Clock" in excellent original condition. The case is of .925 Silver, heavily gold plated, with Wedgewood plaques of ballerinas from the ballet Swan Lake, and swans where the clock meets the blue marble base There is a secret compartment than can house a key or ring, and the 5 rosettes at the top each have a pearl at their apex. The movement is a quality 8-day, key-wind, platform lever. And of course it plays a crisp rendition of Swan Lake. Note swans and top are pure white but have a light blue cast in the photo. These were very expensive when new. Ht 7½" [19cm] Reserve $1450
369. C.1950, Lux Clock Mfg., "Cat" clock in very good original condition. The only thing that keep this from being outstanding, is that someone bent the tail and the paint chipped off at the crease {see line near top of tail}. This clock is otherwise complete and original in every detail. [And not to be confused with the new boat resin reproductions that have popped up on-line] note eyes move back and forth in unison with the tail. In running order. Height of face 5", with tail 7 ½" Reserve $225
370. C.1935, Swiss, Cartier {Dial signed}, 8-Day Travel clock, in folding leather covered case. Both the movement and the case are signed European Watch & Clock Co, which would have been the manufacturer and Cartier the merchandiser. There is wear to the edges of the leather on the case, and it bears the gold initials "ELK,Jr". This was about as good as it got for a depression era travel clock. Case = 4 x 2½ x 1" Reserve $400
371. C.1870, French, A. Dumas, Paris, serial 1048, a clock in the form of a lantern. Dumas is perhaps better know for carriage clocks and miniatures, however, this is an interesting and well made clock. There are some minor stress cracks in the rear that are noticeable on close inspection {not bad}. Has an 8-day time only platform movement in working order, signed A.D. in an oval. Like the French Industrial series, these form clocks are quite collectible. Height 9½" [24cm] Reserve $900
372. C.1890, Swiss, 8-day, pin set clock, with eagle stand. The eagle shows evidence of repairs, but is now intact and has been re-bronzed. Note the eagles wings are removable {held on with screws}, and the eagles legs have stubs that fit down into the tree-trunk base which has the talons cast in. The over-grown watch movement is a stem wind job, with rear access through a large hinged cover. The nickeled case is mostly worn to brass. Porcelain dial is perfect. Runs. Diam. of case = 3.8", ht of eagle, 15½" Reserve $500
373. C.1885, French, Walnut Cartel with clock and barometer, clean and running. Note the aneroid barometer in the bottom is French, apparently replaced around 1950… it fits the opening perfectly, and is working. All 12 cartouche numerals are intact and the intricate walnut case is in excellent condition. Note also porcelain based Centigrade thermometer in throat section. Height 32" Reserve $600
374. C.1913, New Haven "Wardrop", oval door banjo clock, as-found. Someone replaced the top finial with an eagle, so the clock is an inch shorter than the catalog dimension. This clock was in a storage shed for the last 20 years and we had to clean the spider webs and dust off. Having said that, it retains original finish, hands, and perfect porcelain dial. The throat glass had the center color touched up and it ran into the gold a bit, but is basically OK. Bottom tablet like new. Height 23" Reserve $150
375. C.1900, French, Tan Onyx & Bronze Mantel clock, with platform lever movement. The skeletonized platform is intact, and mounted on the rear of the movement. Strikes the hours on a flat wire gong, and with F/S adjustment via a lever through the dial above 12. Note fancy porcelain dial depicting a winged cherub in the clouds, and with a tambourine above the 6. The case is intact with sharp edges, but could stand cleaning; height 9.5" Reserve $250
376. C.1950, Swiss, Gubelin, 3-Sided Desk Set, the 3 panels with Clock and matching Thermometer and Barometer. With a quality 8-day alarm movement. Ticks and stops; button to turn off alarm is absent crown [easily replaced]. Some of the gilding is worn through to brass, but the overall condition is still very good. Note the 3 instruments are mounted to a carousel that turns within the gazebo-like framework. A substantial and well made clock, typical of Swiss workmanship. Height 8" Reserve $300
377. C.1900, French, Gilded Spelter & Porcelain mantel clock, with hand painted pillars, top finial and scene below dial {of a flute player}. This clock is from a local shop and has been cleaned and is running and striking. The porcelain dial is perfect and the hands are original. A very good and affordable clock for the beginning collector. Height 13" Reserve $300
378. C.1890, French, Marble Mantel Clock, black with red mottled accents, and with a quality round, bell strike movement with open escapement on the dial. And with Ellicot’s compensating style pendulum, swinging behind a heavy pane of beveled glass in a brass frame. Both the dial and movement signed A la Gerbe d’Or, H. Chapus Fils, 86 Rue de Rivoli, PARIS. These are heavy and imposing clocks, in need of a sturdy table or mantel to support them. This is about as good as it gets for this style clock; ht 19" Reserve $375
379. C.1863, Seth Thomas, Plymouth Hollow, Conn, "8-Day Parlor Calendar", 2-weight shelf clock. These early calendars are hard to find with the veneer intact; and except for a couple of chips {at top}, this veneer is quite nice. The dials have been repainted [without brand and patent info]; calendar hand replaced improperly. The interior labels are both good, except that the instruction label has had a hole cut in it at the bottom to reveal pendulum motion {see close up}. Lastly, someone cut two holes in the rear of the case to facilitate adjusting the calendar rods. Original "eagle and flag" tablet is still bright; rollers are original {and dark}. Height 30½" Worth $1500 if perfect. Reserve $800
380. C.1900, French, for Tiffany & Co., {dial signature weak and partially rubbed off}, 4-glass crystal regulator in good original condition. The porcelain dial is otherwise very good with no chips nor cracks and the case retains much of its gold wash. Beveled glass is good, except for two minor, internal cracks on side glasses only {barely noticeable}. Quality round movement by Pons is complete and sound, but would benefit from service. Original mercury pendulum retains xlnt gilding. Height 11" Reserve $450
381. C.1900, French, Dial Signed Tiffany & Co., 4- glass crystal regulator in very good condition. The suspension spring has failed and one of the screws holding the movement to the dial is missing. The porcelain dial has a couple of minor hairlines; all numerals and the colorful poly-chrome wreaths are perfect; Tiffany signature excellent. Retains original mercury pendulum and the gilding on both the case and pendulum are still very good; fancy tooled hands are crisp. Movement #3748, is complete, ticks and strikes fine. Good beveled glass. Ht 11" Reserve: $325
382. C.1890, French, Green Onyx & Ormolu, Crystal Regulator in very good condition. There are minor corner chips on the onyx, and the rear beveled glass is chipped; otherwise this is a great original clock with a substantial look. Note fancy dial of white glass or marble, overlaid with a gilt ormolu mask, with an opening for each numeral {dial has dark spot below 6}. Original mercury pendulum intact. All 4 columns are full round and free standing with gilt bronze capitals top and bottom. Well made round mov’t, serial #10159-411, strikes the hours on a flat wire cathedral gong. Ht 13½" Reserve $750
383. Mixed lot: A C.1850 Austrian Biedermeier case and dial, now with a C.1870, 30 hour, open spring movement. Glass dial is cracked horizontally. The case itself is veneered in rosewood with twisty columns up the door and nice cast lead filigree door trim. If you have an earlier German or Austrian short drop movement, you could improve this clock. Runs OK as-is! Door height is 14.5", total ht = 24.5" Reserve: $250
384. C.1870, Waterbury Clock Co., "Small Gothic, V.P." Mini Time, Strike and alarm steeple clock in generally good condition. The door glass has been replaced and with modern transfer decals. Original dial is touched up; case refinished long ago and shows nice age; runs Best part is both original labels on rear of clock {with some holes + tears}, and neat embossed bob of "Mercury". Height 15" Reserve $200
385. C.1880, Waterbury Clock Co., "Seine" cast and gilded spelter clock in generally good condition. The porcelain tile {3-cherubs}at the bottom had the lower right corner broken off and reglued; porcelain dial is chipped at right winding hole and in the margin above 10. Most of the gilding is worn from the case, but it is sound with no breaks. Still these blemishes do not show from a distance, and the clock is an attractive decorator; height 13" Reserve $250
386. C.1891, Waterbury "Bruce" Oak Cased wall clock. Except for the missing stick & ball top, this clock is all original, with exceptional med-golden oak finish. 8-day time and strike on cathedral gong, running well. If you are handy enough to make a top, you can complete a desirable clock. Worth $750 complete. Height as shown in photo 30" Reserve $400
387. C.1885, German, Gustav Becker, 8-Day spring regulator. The carving on this oak case is exceptional, with overlapping "shingles", full length on both sides. The shortcoming on this clock is the walnut top, which is old, but from another clock, as this clock is all oak veneer. Note also the door mask extends down into the dial about ¼ inch. It appears to have always been that way…and you might correct it when you work on an oak top. The movement has been oiled only for all its life and is dark brown, and amazingly runs and strikes through it all; movement and porcelain dial with Becker trademark. Overall very good condition, except as noted; ht 41" Reserve $300
388. C.1890, French, Picture Frame Clock, with large, Morez, iron framed prayer repeat movement. The enamel over steel dial signed Alfred Augendre, Chateaumeillant. The outer frame is gesso over wood, false grained, and the dial surround is of walnut veneer with brass and mother of pearl inlay in excellent condition [usually the brass string is pulled out]. Retains original hands, dial bezel, pendulum, etc. Note suspension spring has failed and will need renewing {leader is there}. Minor nicks and scrapes to case and frame; nothing glaring; overall very good. If maintained, these heavy Morez movements will last 5 lifetimes; height 25" Reserve $300
389. C.1895, French, Gilded Spelter mantel clock. Has a boy feeding a dove on top, and a fancy dial with floral wreath, and a country cottage scene below. The left rear foot has been damaged on this clock, and although holding for the photo, will need attention for dependable service. Movement runs and strikes on a steel gong. Good looking; ht 14 ½" Reserve $275
390. C.1909, German, Gustav Becker, West-minster chime mantel clock. This clock has been running fast here, so I believe the pendulum rod is a bit short. Has a well made solid plate movement, serial #2,343,846 {with medal of honor stamp}, and chimes the quarters on straight steel rods. Has a nicely embossed and silvered dial, and with subsidiary dials in the arch for Fast/Slow and Chime/Silent. Some nicks along the base molding and 2 tiny veneer repairs, otherwise original mahogany finish is very good. Nice tone. Height 14" Reserve $275
391. C.1903, Waterbury Clock Co., "Major" striking and repeating carriage clock in excellent original condition. There is some wear to the original gilding, but it is overall excellent; porcelain dial is perfect as is beveled glass. These small clocks only go for a day, but are well made. Just right for the collector with a space problem. Height 5 ½" Reserve $250
392. C.1955, Swiss, LeCoultre Rue de la Paix "Street Clock", mini souvenir clock. Except for the lens of the street lamp, which is clear plastic and has some age/stress cracks, this is an excellent example of this well made clock. 8-Day Swiss movement; nice quality. Height 11" Reserve $250
393. C.1920, Foreign, "Cat & Ball" clock. This comes to us as-found. The cat is molded celluloid and is cracked and damaged and one glass eye is missing. The movement in the ball is a stem set watch movement, with approximately 1" dial. Ball rotates to disguise true function; see both images. If you can work with this cello, you could restore a very uncommon item; ht 3" Reserve: $150
394. C.1855, American. A 30-hour lever movement in an primitive 3 dimensional case, veneered with geometric paper. The paper veneer has some chips and flakes, but looks to have been there well over 100 years. The dial was repapered and hand lettered long ago {worn and dirty}, & the hands do not match. An oddity; height 7" Reserve $150
395. C.1885, French, Figural Clock with Conical pendulum. The owner had just had this clock professionally restored, and the statue, dial, pendulum and all case hardware have been brightly gold plated. The only shortcomings I could find include; the minute hand has come loose on its hub and will need attention, and 2, the hinged bezel and crystal are missing completely. The movement is clean and running, striking on a bell; the showpiece of a collection; height 20" Reserve $3850
396. C.1890, French, Conical Timepiece. The movement is contained in a brass sphere, painted dark blue. The pendulum is suspended from a silk yoke and rotates above the movement. The trefoil base is gilt wood, with a marble support beneath that. The movement appears to be clean and the clock is running and keeping time {these are not perfect time-keepers}. There is a brass scab repair to one of the brass uprights [only visible on close examination]. Height 16.5" These usually sell for around $3000. Reserve $2100
397. C.1900, Ansonia Royal Bonn "La Chapelle", in tri-color case, starting with aqua at the top, descending to yellow and ending in dark green. There is in this case on the right front corner a dark hairline crack that extends an inch in each direction from the corner. It is hard to notice, but is there. Solid porcelain dial is excellent, and clock retains original hands, nut and pendulum. This rendition of lilies is very attractive and the gold highlights are still good. The cousin to this clock sold last November, lot 438 for $900. Height 12" Reserve $600
398. C.1850, French Porcelain China clock, profusely decorated with 3 dimensional flowers, roses, daisies, and mums amongst light green leaves, all applied. The case surmounted by a winged cherub with his hands outstretched to a white dove. There are some floral tips missing, but not too noticeable. The porcelain dial is excellent with royal blue roman numerals and black five minute markers. The well made bells strike movement has silk thread suspension and a replacement pendulum, recently serviced. The case with anchor trademark. Ht 13½" Reserve: $500
399. C.1925, Waterbury "Ship’s Bell Clock No. 14", on a crescent shaped mahogany base. The base has been stripped and oiled and could stand more finish. Quality 8-day jeweled movement strikes ship’s sequence. Runs but will require cleaning for reliable service; ht 9½", width=17.6" Reserve $300
400. C.1900, German "MONK" Alarm Clock in very good original condition. The painted spelter case is made of two symmetrical halves that are screwed together, and the finish is dirty and worn. The monk retains his original paint {with wear}; his right arm is hinged and with a cord going up to the alarm bell. A lever from the movement rings the bell in the belfry and moves his arm at the same time, with the appearance that he is ringing the bell. The white porcelain dial has hairline cracks {no pieces missing}. One day movement is dirty, but you can coax it into ringing the bell. An interesting novelty; worth taking time to clean movement; we had a gilded one of these in the Nov-99 sale, lot 273 = $1150. Potential here. Height 14" Reserve $750
401. C.1900, Ansonia 8-Day Ship’s Timepiece. This is an unusual clock in that it does not appear in the Ansonia literature, yet it is original. The seconds hand is missing, and the dial is dirty, with wear around the winding holes. This is a double spring, left winding time only movement, as used in the Ansonia "Lever" series {needs cleaning}. The brass tub is a heavy cast unit with hinged bezel {well oxidized and needing polish}. The original crystal and hands are intact as well. Dial diameter = 5" Ht 7" Reserve $225
402. C.1905, Ansonia Clock Co., "Plato No. 7233", digital flip clock in good original condition. What keeps this clock from being excellent are chips in the right and rear beveled glass. The clock is otherwise in good shape, ticks and stops and is a nice example of this model., with no dings in brass case. This particular model is pictured in Palmer’s Treasury of American Clocks {1967}, page 275. Height 6" Reserve $170
403. C.1900, German, Wall Cuckoo, with attractive inlay on the front and with finely carved leaf trim to the sides and with original finials and top rail of leaves. This clock has had the top glued together several times, the hands are too short and the cuckoo bird is a nice hand-carved replacement. Movement needs cleaning and regulating. Retains original flutes and pendulum bob. Height 23" Reserve $300
404. C.1910, German, Box Style 2-Weight regulator, as-is. Note the gathering pallet is missing from the movement, the dial center is incorrect and it is not possible to get a key over the winding arbors. The movement is mounted to a 2" block in case; one post is missing from the bracket and the original slide mount has been cut off. The red mahogany finish case has some cracks. Chapter ring is good; retains old pendulum and nice beveled glass; no pulleys; new weights; needs work; ht 36" Reserve $250
405. C.1900, New Haven Clock Co, Wall hanging clock in the French style. This exact clock is not pictured in the New Haven book; it has the brass case of #1012 and the trim of Chatelaine. Height of clock alone is 17"; overall = 32". The case has been sprayed with dark red paint and the spelter trim sprayed with gold paint; porcelain numerals all good; movement overhauled and keeping perfect time. The restorations may keep this from making its reserve of $500 See also lot 413.
406. C.1870, E. N. Welch, 30-hour Steeple in good condition. The case has been stripped and needs more finish and there are a few veneer chips, and some veneer repairs. However, the dial, hands, & label are original. The old tablet, for the English market, is of the Royal Crest, with rearing lion and unicorn either side of the crown – it has some flaking, and has been re-blacked from the rear, but is still pretty good. Generally in good condition, a little case work will improve it a lot. Running and striking; ht 19 ¼" Reserve: $175
407. C.1850, American Clock Co, Mini Cast Iron mantel clock, as-found, crystal missing. Although this clock has been in storage, and there is some rust on the case, and the dial is somewhat discolored, it is generally in good condition. Most of the mother of pearl trim is intact. Hubbell 30 hour movement ticks, but would benefit from service. Height 5" Small price for real Americana. Reserve $125
408. C.1918, Wm. L. Gilbert "CURFEW", bell top mantel clock. The rear dust cover is falling off and needs attention, but this clock is otherwise in very good condition. Feet look like they’ve been painted gold at some time, but the dial, hands, bell and trim are all original. Dial is very good with only few small brown spots. Runs. Strikes on large bell at top. Light spots on sides are reflections off the imitation leather finish. Wrong hands. Ht 17½" Reserve $200
409. Mixed lot: C.1900, a fanciful ormolu wall case, with fine detail, showing cherubs, angels and dancers, now with a C.1950 German fit-up movement. This is a large and impressive wall piece and would not have had an elaborate movement to begin with, and the replacement is adequate. If you have a spot that requires a lot of gold, maybe this is for you. Height 29½" Reserve $500
410. Mixed lot: C.1915, Ingraham NIAGARA pressed oak case, refinished, NOW with a Gilbert 8-day t/s/calendar movement, dial, & pend. I know we did not want this caliber of clock in this sale, but this was shipped here, so we are selling it. Looks good and runs and the reserve will cover the parts. Height 22¼" Reserve $90
411. C.1907, Ansonia "Plato No. 3" {catalog number 7233}, as-found. The bottom cover got lost and this clock stood in a damp place. There is no rust on the movement, but the case is oxidized and some of the numbers have caked-on dirt. Still ticks and stops and can be cleaned up OK. All 4 beveled glasses are perfect. Height 6" Worth $300 if clean and complete. Modest reserve $100
412. C.1900, French, Brass Cased, time only carriage clock, as-found. This clock has been in storage and is very dirty; case oxidized. Ticks and stops; original platform intact. The front beveled glass has a large chip lower left and will need replacing. The porcelain dial is good and hands are original. Side glasses are fine. Height 5¼" Reserve $100
413. C.1889, New Haven "Chatelaine", wall hanging cartel clock with original antique brass finish {even the numerals have a brownish antique look}. This clock is in excellent original condition and runs well. 15 day, double spring time only movement. Overall length 21" Mr. Ly prices this clock at $450. Reserve $300
414. C.1890, Swiss, 8-day, pin set, paperweight clock. This clock is in running order, however the porcelain dial was damaged and is poorly filled in the center, and with hairlines. The well jeweled movement is visible from the rear. Note the flash covered part of the numeral 10. Diameter of ball = 3" Reserve $300
415. C.1900, Swiss, 8-day, stem set, paperweight clock. The porcelain dial is marked for 24 hours {red 13-24 inside black Arabic}, and is signed "Chronometre, Maiford". The lever movement is also marked Maiford, and 15 jewels. Runs, but seems to lose time. The yellow spot on numeral 2 is from the flash. Diameter 2¼" Modest reserve $125
416. C.1893, Waterbury "No. 2013" Marble and Onyx mantel clock in outstanding original condition. Who ever buys this clock will really need to pick it up in Salem, as it has survived over a century without damage and it would be a shame to have it dropped. This clock is virtually like new with good open escapement porcelain dial and with attractive reddish brown onyx insets in the polished black marble. The gilt trim in the incising is intact on the base but rubbed off in insets above. With original instruction label on bottom. I know it is only a marble clock, but this is as good as it gets. Ht 11 ¼" Reserve $200
417. C.1926, Ansonia "Sun Watch" in very good original condition. The brass case retains original lacquer and the latitude, longitude and equation of time scales are sharp and clear. These turn up occasionally at yard sales but this is one of the nicest we’ve seen. One small ding in bottom of case. Outside dimensions: 2" x 3" x ½" Reserve $75
418. C.1810, German, a 19th Century version of a 17th century "telleruhr". This old clock has a lot of character, including a primitive movement with crown wheel, verge and cow’s tail pendulum. The early models used rope, while this one is set up for chain. Note also delicate single hand and division track inside the roman numerals that divides the hours into quarters. In researching this we concluded that the wooden cover over the movement would originally have been hammered iron like the dial plate and hinge, so that is a likely replacement [done long ago and looks OK]. Lastly, the rear plate of the movement is engraved "1664", and we interpret this to mean "in the style of 1664". Runs. Height 10 ½" [26.5 cm] Reserve $1250
419. C.1890, French Bronzed Spelter Figural Clock "Harvest", a gowned maiden with a scythe in her right hand, cut wheat in her lap, and above the clock tools of the field, shovel, wooden pitch fork and hoe. There is one small tip of white metal missing, bottom center that has been gone for some time and not too noticeable – the rest of the profusely detailed casting is all intact and quite impressive. The crystal is cracked and will need replacing and the minute hand has been poorly replaced and will need a longer and nicer replacement. The well made movement is complete and sound. This is a large and heavy clock and should be picked up or hand delivered. Height 21" Reserve $425
420. C.1760, Austrian, Miniature Alarm clock, only 5¼" [13cm] high, by Franz Riess {engraved on chapter ring}. Has a 2-day time movement with crown wheel/verge and cow’s tail pendulum swinging in front of the dial. The alarm is wound by pulling a cord on the left rear of the clock. Note the alarm barrel is made for a very small chain, and now has a piece of gut in place [OK, but should be changed]. The left front bun foot got knocked off and is glued on with hot melt glue [should be soldered]. Despite the restorations needed, this is a good 18th century clock that is complete and sound. Height 5¼" Reserve $2400
421. C.1895, Ansonia "Jumper No. 1", as-found. This clock was shipped from London in a candy box and the box arrived crushed; the top trim broken off and the stand bent. Fortunately Ansonia made these parts out of brass and the stand can be straightened and the top soldered {it is just setting on the top for photo}. The dial has a small water stain, but is very good. The suspension spring and stop are MISSING, and doll is a new repro [German style – should be American style]. Movement is otherwise sound. Hands original. The parts alone are worth the modest reserve. Height 15" Reserve $350
422. C.1895, Ansonia "Jumper No. 2" in very good condition, with proper repro doll. The movement is fairly clean and tries to run, but the doll is perhaps a bit heavy, as it is slightly out of beat, and stops after only a minute. Original dial is excellent and the case undented and stand never broken. Generally a very good example. Height 14½" Reserve $750
423. C.1894, Ansonia "Swing No. 1" , as-found, with top trim missing and with repro doll {an older one that is well done}. Also the dial was replaced long ago with a paper one with the "S" trademark, and that has turned brown with age. The movement is running robustly, with brisk action of the doll. This is perhaps a "place holder" until you find a nicer one; a perfect one would bring $2000. Height 11½" Reserve $450
424. C.1841, Ray & Ingraham, Bristol, Conn. This is the only regular size OG in the auction, and yet we felt it was "worthy". There are a couple of veneer pieces missing along the bottom band, but it is flat and easy to repair. The rest is wonderful, including one of the nicest labels we’ve seen on an OG. Dial is super also with original floral corners; even hands are original, as is finish. Ht 26" Reserve $200
425. C.1840, French, Empire Period, Ormolu figural clock with silk thread movement. This has the wonderful theme of "culture", the center pedestal with a stack of books and a rolled scroll; the pedestal at left with an incense burner, another scroll and a two sided cup. And the featured lady playing a horn, held in her right hand, and holding her music score with her left hand. This clock took a tumble at some time and the dial is with hairlines and a chip by 5, and the hands, though old, are too long for this dial, and have had their tips cut. No pendulum. Lots of potential. Height 14½" Reserve $2200
426. C.1900, French, Swinging Doll clock in a painted spelter case. The case has been nicely repainted in the European style, tu-tone bronze, and with highlights on the flowers. There is a hairline on the dial around 11, and the glass is missing from the front bezel. The Farcot movement with chaff-cutter ‘scape is clean and runs OK, the gilded doll swinging front to back. Generally in good condition. Height 12" Reserve $900
427. C.1900, French Swinging Doll Clock, the case of alabaster with gilt trim. Note this clock was bumped at some time and the top circle of alabaster has a repair seam from front to back. The skeletonized Farcot movement is clean and running, though the beat is temperamental… has to be just right. Also note one rear wing is broken off of the doll {not visible from the front}. See also lot 433. Height 9" Reserve $750
428. C.1910, European, probably French "Glass Dialed Mystery" clock. The case and movement are unsigned, however, the lever movement is of high quality. A gear from the movement meshes with the inside glass of the dial causing the single hand to rotate every 12 hours. There was a thin dust ring around the rear bezel to hide the gear and keep dust out of the movement, and that is absent. The case is of ebonized wood, and the bezel has a dry split on the left that has been glued a few times. Still, this is an unusual clock, and can be bought for far less than the models made 100 years earlier. Lighter set of numerals in photo are shadow from the flash going through the dial. Height 11½" Reserve $1650
429. C.1890, French, Gilt-wood Lyre Clock, with very unusual pendulum ring that rotates back and forth around the margin of the dial. This "pendulum" is really acting like a giant balance wheel, with gilded fleur-de-lis all around the margin to give it a lot of visual appeal. The well made movement is signed "GLT" [Guilmet], and with number 593. The gold lacquered case is decorated with flowers, and with tasteful ormolu trim and feet. We have never seen this model of lyre before, with rotating rather than oscillating ring. Running briskly. Height 19½" Reserve $3500
430. C.1890, French, Gilt-wood Lyre Clock, with traditional ring of brilliants which swings as the pendulum. The case decorations are similar to those of the previous lot, with more profuse display of flowers, and with ormolu mounts and feet. This is a miniature size clock, only 14" high. The well made movement strikes the hours and halves on a bell. The porcelain dial is 3 inches in diameter, and with polychrome floral decorations. The clock is running. Reserve $2500
431. C.1850, Japanese Shitan Striking Stick clock in exceptional condition. The well made, engraved and skeletonized balance/verge movement is powered by the sheer weight of the secondary striking movement, which slides down inside the "stick". Extensions on the back of the movable time markers trip the mechanism which strikes on a small bell. A brass pointer attached to the strike movement protrudes through a groove along the vertical dial to indicate the time visually. Key drawer in the base [no key]. This is an especially small clock for a striker. Height 18.5" [47cm] Reserve $3750
432. C.1900, French, Enamel Over Ormolu mantel clock in an architectural style. The gilded case is decorated in red white and blue cloisonne` . This is a little gem, quite cute, standing only 8.5" high. Has a small and well made French pendulum movement and strikes on a gong. See also lot 434. Clean and working; reserve $1500
433. C.1890, French, Swinging Doll, Striking Clock, in generally good condition. Some corners of the alabaster case have been rounded off and there is a hairline in the porcelain dial around 1. This clock is otherwise in very good original condition, the movement clean and running, striking on a bell. Strikers do not occur that often in this format. With Farcot patent double escape wheel and chaff cutter verge. Especially nice detail on cast doll [cherub]; note he swings front to back. Ht 11" Reserve $1000
434. C.1900, French, Enamel Over Ormolu mantel clock in an architectural style. The front only of the gilded case is decorated in red white and blue cloisonne` . See ‘cousin’ to this clock, lot 432. This one is not as elaborate, but is still very well made and eye catching. The images of these are deceiving as the clocks are small. The dial signed Edward & Sons, Paris, London & Glasgow. 8-day time and strike pendulum movement. Height 8¾" Reserve $900
435. C.1920, Sterling Bronze Co., New York, small desk clock of high quality. Sterling bought movements from both Chelsea and Waltham. This one has a Waltham 8-day stem wind lever movement {stem in recess in marble at bottom}. The dial is a little yellowed from age, but the gilt bronze casting of a small boy running retains most of its gilding and has a lot of character. Nice piece of roaring 20’s memorabilia. Clock runs but would benefit from service. Height 6" Reserve $425
436. C.1880, F. Kroeber, New York "Grandfather" model stop clock, with jump-quarter second hand. This clock is complete and sound and all original, however has seen lots of use and much of the plating is worn to brass and the dial has been damp and is discolored, especially by numeral 5. Nonetheless, this is a very uncommon clock and certain to attract interest. Diameter = 4½" Res: $330
437. C.1860, English, Chain Fusee Skeleton clock in a very attractive scroll frame, less dome. This clock has been in storage and is dusty, but is a high quality skeleton clock with nicely spoked wheels and a well pierced dial and frame. Although it needs cleaning and a dome, this is a well made clock that will clean up nicely. See also lots 176, 177, 178, and 349. With passing bell at the hour. Height 18" Reserve $1300
438. C.1900, French, Crystal Regulator with cloisonne’ enamel bands top and bottom, in red, white, blue and aqua, AND with a cameo portrait pendulum. This clock is in generally very good condition. The right and front beveled glass have small corner chips that are not objectionable, but there. The clock arrived with a broken suspension spring and we put one on for the photo and it is about 1/8" too long. The well made round movement is signed in bold script France and with number 2550. Retains original bright paste bezel and matching pendulum surround, all brilliants intact. The cameo is perfect with no blemishes, as is the dial, with polychrome floral trim. The case has had most of the gilding rubbed off of it and has turned brown. Still a nice clock; height 10" Res=$1200
439. C.1933 {dated January 1933}, Charles Alvah Smith, Brattleboro, Vermont, 8-day, wood works wall clock, Serial number 10, with Smith signature stamp on rear of dial, and with original wall mount. Smith’s lifetime production was 565 units, so this is indeed an early clock. He made a special wooden sleeve to cover the weight which is missing, but the clock is otherwise complete, sound, and original {including small wooden counter balance on other end of cord}. Each case he made was slightly different, with different woods {always solid}, and different pattern inlays. The cover on this one has an attractive thin candy stripe. Every component is of very good quality. Runs; dial is fading; minor nicks, but nothing unexpected for a 67 year old clock. Sure to be of interest to Vermonteers. Height of clock 12¼" - overall 24½" Reserve $350
440. C.1895, Attleboro Clock Co., Attleboro, Mass, Peerless Assortment – F, pressed oak gingerbread, with original rear label intact. I admit I lost track of the gentleman Jim Erickson, who has compiled a great deal of information on this company. If he would be kind enough to contact either Chris or Bob, it would be appreciated. This is an 8-day time, strike and alarm. The case has been refinished to a light caramel color, and the dial has a new paper pasted over it. Normally the movements in these clocks were Waterbury, however, this one is An unmarked steel plate job with heavy brass bushings AS IS THE ALARM. Another interesting gingerbread; height 22" Reserve $150
441. C.1860, French, Japy, bronze "Elephant" clock. This clock comes to us as-found and IS missing the numerals 4 and 6. The bronze case is an intricate casting with lots of rococo detail. This is a small eared Indian elephant, as used in Louis XVI clocks of the same style. The case is surmounted by a winged cherub. This clock came to us from storage and the case is very dusty; the movement was cleaned maybe 20 years ago and is still trying to run and strike. Refer to Tardy’s La Pendule Francaise, part II, pages 232-233 for similar clocks with this motif. Some real potential if you can make replacements for the numerals. Height 12½" [32cm] Reserve $1100
442. C.1835, R. & J. B. Terry {Samuel’s sons}, 8-day weight driven shelf clock. The three deck case has full round mahogany columns spanning two decks. The case was stripped and never properly finished, and the two tablets are both new and improper. The veneer is still in good shape. This is an uncommon clock, the company having been in business for less than 2 years, and this unusual rack and snail movement with square teeth on the wheels was unique to these boys and of interest to the Bristol horologist. Note also the outboard weight driven alarm movement that mounts under the seatboard, and for which a hole is provided in the dial. The wooden dial plate is original, but has been crudely papered over with a home-made dial and varnished. Alarm disc is missing. The time and strike weights are proper, the alarm weight is new and improper. Height 37" Reserve $325
443. C.1910, Ingersoll "Jumbo Watch" which is not a watch at all, but a display clock in the form of a watch. Nonetheless, the dial clearly states "Jumbo Model Ingersoll Watch". With original cello dial, turned a little dark with age, but still excellent. Note hands do not match. Using a 30 hour open spring, balance/lever clock movement. The case with some dings and dents, but generally good. Runs. Height 11" Reserve $250
444. C.1885, E. N. Welch Mfg, Bristol, Jewel paperweight clock, in generally good condition. This is an 8-day timepiece model, with a chip at the center of the dial and a hairline at 10. The hands are original and the clock seems to run OK. Rear stem set knob is missing. Amber glass case is perfect. Height 3.8" Reserve $225
445. Mixed lot: a C.1825 American wood movement in a C.1910, home-made country pine case, with a C. 1825 hood only, all as-found, in need of major restoration. A dog has chewed on the trunk transition molding, feet or skirt absent. The movement is complete, except no bell, no calendar hand, nor weights; minute shaft split and will need glue. Original dial is fair, with original numerals and decorations and will restore OK. Pendulum old but not correct. This project is not for the meek, but the clock can live again. Height 84" Reserve $350
446. C.1920, Japan, "ANGEL CHRONO-METER", round dial clock in very good original condition. Although this is NO chronometer, it represents Japan’s effort to capitalize on the work as a merchandising tool, and the term Angel and the large picture of a steamship on the label are all meant to covey reliability and durability. Movement copies American open spring concept with Japanese balance/lever on front of 9" dial. Diameter 13" Reserve $65
447. C.1935, German, Forestville Clock Co. [Euramco], nice walnut tambour clock,. Striking bim-bam cords on 5 rods. Has a good 8-day lever movement. This clock has never been serviced and is not running, but will respond to service as movement is complete and intact. Original rods unbroken and nice tone. Height 9" Reserve $35
448. C.1900, French, Small Black slate mantel clock, dirty but sound and will clean up nicely. Minor edge chips are not bad and porcelain dial and hands are xlnt. Well made French movement numbered 774, and with original pendulum with same number; 8-day time and strike on bell. Original bell, nut, hammer, straps and rear cover intact. Height 8" [20cm] Reserve $50

451. C.1938, Upson, Merrimans & Co., Bristol, Conn, triple deck shelf clock, restored. This clock has a typical Ives type strap brass movement {see Ken Roberts’ book on Ives, page 129, fig 33}. Retains original dial with gilt corners and inspection window above the center shaft {mirror is replaced and no rod up through top hole – simple to fix}. The faux tortoise shell columns have been professionally restored and look great. Lower tablet is new {very nicely done} Label torn, but intact and legible. Clock was restored about 20 years ago and is dusty, but is ticking and striking, cable good, only needs oiling. Height 37" Reserve $500
452. C.1935, Seth Thomas "TRADITION" Pillar & Scroll in very good original condition. There are a couple of nicks in the case, nothing too noticeable, and the tablet has a couple of spots touched up behind the factory design. This clock came from a home in East Hampstead, NH, and has received loving care for a long time. Uses late #89 8-day open spring movement, and strikes the hours on a coiled wire gong. Dial retains original Seth Thomas signature in excellent condition. A great clock for the beginning collector. Running fine. Height 20" Reserve $325
453. C.1900, Ansonia Clock Co., for the American Wringer Co, NY, "ECLIPSE" model hanging oak gingerbread in excellent original condition.. The only minor item that keeps this from being outstanding, is a missing center support behind the bottom trim {side returns present}, and this is undetectable until you turn it around. This clock retains original golden oak finish, a great tablet and premium barrel pendulum. AND it is with alarm as well.. Good original dial and hands. This clock was made under contract by Ansonia and given as a premium to folks who purchased an American wringer. Both rear labels intact, serial number 868. This is as good as it gets for a gingerbread. Height 26" Reserve $350
