White metal fencing has a couple of old repairs, but none is missing. The chinoiserie paintings have only about 20% left. This was a tremendous clock when new; open 'scape movement has fancy nickel plates and also spring covers. Rare; height 19.5" $400-600

275c. C.1875, F. Kroeber, 8 Courtlandt St, NY (both rear labels intact) "Indian Hunter", metal case in excellent condition (only hurt is missing rt rear foot). The Indian is complete with his bow, string & arrows and there is no damage to the dog. Orig dial +Jacot pend; a hard to find clock in good cond; height 22" $500-700
275d. C.1835, Geo. Marsh & Co., (no place given), an oversize 8-day beveled front shelf clock. The case is really super with original finish and only minor edge blemishes; the orig tablet of a lady in period dress is superior; the dial has 2 drilled holes at the bottom margin but is otherwise excellent. The movement has several teeth missing and will need to see Mr. Bruno. Ht 38" $500-700
275e. c.1830, Silas Hoadley, Plymouth, Conn, an early pillar & splat with 3-section door. The "Time is Money" lower tablet is new but well done; mirror new & pillars poorly repainted (see Karen Larson). The wind @ 2+10 wooden mov't is with ivory bushings and in good condition, with alarm between the plates. Original splat. But the best part of this clock is the super label extolling "Franklin Clocks" by Silas Hoadley "with the improvement of bushing the pivots with ivory", and with small overpaste with full alarm instructions; alarm with a broken tooth. Note peculiar Hoadley paw feet. The alarm set hand is a replacement; ht 37.5" $400-600

332. C.1890, French Swinging Mystery Clock in good as-found condition. this clock was bought at a small shop in England in 1978 and had been painted over a couple of times by previous owner(s). It has never been cleaned, but will restore nicely. The spelter statue of "Glaneuse" by C. Moreau will need refinishing also, but is sound with no breaks nor repairs. 334. C.1890, French Mini Boulle Tall Clock in excellent condition. There are a couple of cracks in the tortoise shell, but none is missing. All 17 pieces of ormolu are nicely chased & intact. The dial signed: Bigelow Kennard & Co., Boston, & with original mini sunburst pendulum; ht 19" $1200-1500
335. Mid 19th Century, American, wall framed clockwork automaton , depicting two cobblers at work in the shoe shop. When the man on the left stops hammering and begins talking, an old lady, wielding her shoe, pops in from the side, berating the men to keep working. She so scares the men that they return to work feverishly. The art work is on thin card stock and is a little dark (but still quite clear). The main drive belt could stand renewing. But overall this is a great piece of Americana in good condition; 17 x 12" $1500-2000
336. C.1875, Ithaca Calendar Clock Co., "No. 3 1/2 Parlor", in excellent original condition. The only flaw is some flaking of the paper rollers; the rest of the clock: dials, pend and movements are still excellent. Note original glass crystal pend has no chips. Calendar mechanism is the improved version, introduced around 1875, however the split back and long pendulum, which were phased out about the same time, help us pinpoint the production time; height 20" $2500-3000
337. C.1885, E. Howard & Co., Boston, Regulator #84, tall clock in oak. We can't think of enough nice things to say about this clock, as it is exceptional. The golden oak case retain its original finish that has been lightly varnished over (very nicely done). The pendulum stick with orig gilding and orig lacquer on bob; same for weights. The silvered dial is original with no dis-coloration. This clock is up and running and would be a welcome addition for any Howard specialist. 8-day, two weight, time & strike on gong; ht 100" $5000-8000
338. C.1830, Unsigned NH Mirror clock in a nice country case with black columns. The finish appears to be original and the movement is original to the case. The full plated mov't has robust shaped pillars and arched top to the plates, is well made and shows no major signs of wear (is dirty). The door has been off at some time and reglued; the old top glass is broken, and the mirror, though spotted, is a replacement. Original dial is crazed nicely (no flaking) and looks good; nice Americana. Height 32" $2000-3000
339. C.1975, Foster S. Campos, Pembroke, Mass, reproduction Girandole; we went with the consignor down to Foster who looked this clock over and authenticated it as his workmanship. There are some minor nicks in the case & the gold leaf has a couple of touch-up spots, but overall the clock is in excellent condition. Kilbourne type weight movement. 341. C.1898, Ansonia "Antique Hanging" in mahogany. this certainly is about the nicest "Antique we've seen. There are some minor nicks here and there, but overall this approaches Ly's definition of "mint-original". Someone started cleaning off the nicotine with Nev-R-Dull and stopped after doing the top & dial center--that's the only fault we can find. Mov't recently cleaned and running fine; ht 46.5" $4000-5000
342. C.1890, French, Tiffany, Blue Cobalt lyre clock, the knife edge suspension supporting a pendulum with a ring of brilliants that swing back and forth. The porcelain china case is perfect and the ormolu retains all of its original gilding. The floral dial is signed Tiffany & Co., New York, and there are no chips in dial. Finely chased & gilded hands complement this clock; note this small example is hard to find; ht 14" $4000-5000

345. C.1890, French Mystery clock in good running order. Bob bought this clock at a boot sale in Yorkshire in 1974 and brought it back to LA in a suitcase. The airline folks dropped it and the marble case split in a dozen pieces. Jerry Lausmann bought it and glued the case back together and it still has some rough edges. Several people have owned the clock since and all agree that it is the "runningist" mystery that ever was. Ht 22" If it was perfect, I'd say it was a $5000 clock; my guess now is: $3000-3500
346. C.1820, Austrian Grand Sonnerie mantel clock in a classic architectural case with alabaster columns & finials. The fork at the bottom of the crutch is gone & will need replacement, in addition, the tip of the minute shaft has broken at the pin hole and the minute hand has been epoxied on (Please don't turn hands until repaired). However the rest of the clock is MINT, and it comes in a lovely glazed display case (black lacquer & glass) Height 22" $700-900
347. C.1900, French "Beam Engine", from the Industrial Series. You'll notice that the French made extensive use of a compound pendulum (ref. steam hammer, rower, even the regular swinging arm) to produce a slower motion than the eye expects for the size of the swinging or oscillating part. The beam engine is no exception; this large size engine is clean & going (must be level) and with a perfect porcelain dial; strikes on a bell; minor chips on rear of marble base are not noticeable; ht 10"$2500-3000
348. C.1884, F. Kroeber, New York, "Noiseless Rotary No. 1", Kroeber's answer to the popular French conical pendulum clocks. This clock was purchased in 1979 from Terwilliger's Silent Auction #22, lot #122, and still has the shipping tape on the dome; the parcel was unopened as received from Terwilliger. The dial was repapered (decent job), but other than that, this is an excellent clock with a perfect label. Runs +strikes fine; 20.5" $2000-3000

C.1840, French Architectural clock; note the auxiliary movement in this clock has 2 functions: a> to work the semaphore signals (has a kidney shaped cam to position the arrows) & b> to turn a water fountain from the lion's mouth (note both beveled gear & glass tube are missing). The bronze case is finely crafted with nicely chased ormolu trim; and with fancy cast/pierced pendulum as well. Well worth a restoration effort; height 21" $2000-2500

354. C.1820, Austrian Laterndluhr, time only, of 90 day running duration. The robust 66 beat movement with 5 wheel train, silvered dial w/ engine turned center, seconds bit and delicate cast bezel. The wooden pendulum stick & hardware are replacements, the original bob with a small dent near the center. The oval weight is a modern replacement, well made. The case of well figured mahogany with satinwood banding, and with minor nicks & repairs, and the rear of the case has been shellacked over. A good looking clock; height 46.5" $20,000-25,000
355. C.1890, Austria, J. Volkenstein, Wien 1 (movement signed on front plate), timepiece of one year duration in an attractive 2nd Baroque walnut tall case. The perfect porcelain dial retains jeweler's name: Anton Hawelk in Wien. Power is supplied via a yoked pulley holding two 28 pound weights. We'd suggest something heavier for cord than the 80# dacron in use. The original seatboard supports have been tastefully reinforced with 2 small walnut corbels (same color & thickness, but you can see the work!). The 6 wheel train is made to the highest standards and the verge has jeweled pallets. Note: lower safety stop for verge is lacking but can be easily made--dimensions are apparent. The movement also with counter-balanced minute and hour hands (2 separate brass weights in motion work). A mechanically refined clock. Height 91" $6000-8000
356. C.1890, Austrian, Grand Sonnerie 3-weight, 8-day floor clock in a walnut 2nd Baroque style case with nice proportions. Note carved door panel with lenticle may be removed & replaced with glass if desired. The dial, weights & pendulum are engraved to the highest standard with scroll & leaf design. The shield shaped dial retains silvered chapter ring with arabic numerals. The case has minor nicks & repairs, but is overall in excellent condition. It is increasingly difficult to find Baroques in nice condition; ht 92" $4000-5000
356a. C.1900, Ansonia Clock Co., "Apex" Crystal Regulator in very good condition. Note the left pane of glass was broken in transit and will need to be replaced (about $35); dial with minor hairline at 8:30 (practically unnoticeable). Distractions aside, this clock was produced with the rare brilliant studded sash & pendulum and all of the brilliants are intact and firm in their mountings. Good open 'scape movement. Original gilding is rubbed through in high spots but is overall excellent. If you want one American 4-glass, this is it! Height 18.5" $2000-3000

the "Helmsman". This clock depicts a ship
cutaway at the stern, the captain with a firm grip on the wheel,
both rocking back and forth and acting as the actual pendulum
for the clock. The first mate is shown coiling up the line after
casting off. The 8-day T/S movement strikes on a bell. The ship
components are made of brass, the whole mounted to a black marble
base. Note also, that you screw the small pend bob upwards to

The heavy movement has a well engraved dial with fancy arabic numerals and with matched engraving on the original pulleys, weights, & pendulum. Height 94" $4000-5000
359. C.1880, German, Giant cuckoo, hunting motif with spread wing eagle crest. This clock was bought by a Marlborough resident in Germany (and old newspaper articles accompany the clock). The 2-train, with fusee movement needs service and the bellows need recovering, but this has to be one of the finest examples of Black Forest carving we've seen; height 54" $6000-7000
360. C.1890-1910, English, dial signed Alexander N. Hill, Muiravonside. A quality astro regulator with a very heavy movement (plates are 9mm thick) and with quality 6 spoke wheelwork throughout. The plates are in a stylized "A" form, cut out for ease of maintenance, and held together with 8 large knurled thumbscrews. The brass dial is well engraved, the silvering with wear. The pendulum of unique design with the lead filled cylinder riding on 2 rollers. The flat top mahogany case is well made and with a pleasant faded red color; height 76" $5000-7000
361. C.1825, Austrian 30 day movement, now in a 20th Century Laterndluhr case with mahogany veneer & satinwood banding. The 66 beat movement has a 5 wheel train, of delicate proportions and with maintaining power. The case has been nicely made with well figured veneer. 362. 20th Century, English, a custom made weight driven regulator, with a skeletonized, 4-leg gravity escape movement of high quality. Attractive 5-spoke wheel work throughout the movement and the plates with circular brushed pattern on all surfaces. The pendulum is a robust brass covered cylinder of lead with a large rating nut. A 25 lb. weight (as is usual for a gravity 'scape) powers the clock for a week. The case is of mahogany veneer over chip board; ht 70" $4000-6000
363. C.1830, a well made Austrian 30 day time only movement, now in a mid-20th Century laterndluhr case with crotch mahogany veneer and satinwood banding. The 66 beat movement has a 5 wheel train with maintaining power, also silvered dial and has been recently cleaned; note crutch has been repaired with soft solder & needs attn. 364. C.1870, Swiss 8-tune music box with 17 note organ accompaniment. The 19" cylinder is driven by a large single spring that is would through a 45 degree bevel arrangement. The original silvered brass tune card lists the airs: 1> Tullieno, 2> Star Spangled Banner, 3> Ballade, 4> Masnadiere, 5> Home Sweet Home, 6> Le Vepres, 7> Barber of Seville, and 8> Ernani., and also engraved: "Made of Ball, Black & Co., NY", and with a beautiful painting on ivory of "Geneva & Mont Blanc" (so inscribed). Great sound; width = 30" $5000-7000
364a. 18th Century, English Tavern Clock, this one certainly fitting the "Act of Parliament" category. This clock has a 24" dial and retains original gold leaf/chinoisserie decorations (with wear). Colors: gold on black. The time only weight movement is sound but will need cleaning; the case is missing a molding or 2; the brass hands are in need of restoration. A great Anglican piece; ht 50" $3000-4000
365. C.1890, French "Lighthouse" from the industrial series. This large model has a detached balance with helical spring, mounted in the beacon area. Power to unlock the 'scape travels down a tube to the base (which houses the 8-day T/S movement). After unlocking the 'scape, power the returns up the tube to keep the beacon oscillating. The "beacon" has three prisms of cut glass -- clear, red & green, which offer a pleasant visual experience when the clock is running. This clock has been nicely restored and seems to run well; ht 22" $3500-4500
366. C.1880, Swiss, 8-Tune music box with organ and block accompaniment. The walnut veneered case has been nicely refinished and with attractive inlay on the top; one small crack in veneer on top The tunes are: 1> La Fille de 916 ing'n (March de Conspiratores), 2> Le Beau Bleu Danube, Walse, 3> Le Petit Faush Vaillante 4> La Grande Duchesse 5> Interlaken, Polka, 6> De Miramis, 7> La Minuette, and 8> H'Bacio, Walse #4, the tune sheet listing the composers as well. The profusely carved oak case with floral/female caryatids flanking the dial and with carved floral sprays in the arch and along the base. The case retains orig dark oak finish (minor blemishes). 369. C.1900, German, Symphonion Musical Clock, see Bower's, page 216. Symphonion made the entire unit; plays No. 20 (4.5") discs on the hour. One disc only with this unit (Washington Post March). The governor fan has been crudely replaced and lower dust cover is missing. This is a center drive model; clock ticks & stops; case lacks 2 twisty brass molding in the rear (front OK). There are some minor repairs on the walnut case, but it has good lines, an unusual broken arch top and original finials. These early clocks typically have a one piece flat porcelain dial, and this one is no exception; also with shell pattern cast bezel. The rosewood veneer case has accents of satinwood inlay and retains original top (top with new pegs to hold it on). Note the time train is weight driven (see weight in photo), and the quarter and hour trains are spring driven; ht 39" $2000-3000

375. Late 18th Century, a German 8-Day Weight Driven grand sonnerie movement, now in a C.1840 oak tall case, still later modified by cutting the plinth (base moldings remain). The movement itself was restored by adding a 3rd plate to the backplate for reinforcement (well done); the brass dial has an engraved & enameled rolling moon, wonderful cast spandrels of fans & scrolls, the dial signed: Martin Reich, Heideldorf. Modest case work would improve this clock; height 76" $2000-2500
376. C.1900 (dated) German presentation clock in the Art Nouveau style. Note the cast bronze crest of Victoria Augusta. This particular clock was given to the chef of the 86th Royal Fusiliers Regiment (Victoria's body guard regiment) in appreciation of 10 years of faithful service in feeding the regiment. The presentation plaque is inscribed with all the members of the regiment at the time and was presented on 9th Sept, 1900. The movement itself is an ordinary chain driven 8-day job, with poor solder repairs attaching the dial feet to the dial. The strike gong is missing and the pendulum is incorrect. This clock is more important historically than horologically; height 96" $1750-2250
377. C.1850, Daniel Medcalf, London, a good English double fusee bracket clock in a giant "balloon" style case with crotch mahogany veneers & well carved floral accents. At some point someone put too long a suspension on, and then filed about 1mm of the bottom of the bob. 401. C.1890, Waterbury, Walnut Mirror Side parlor clock in excellent condition. The dimensions are similar to the Oxford, but I'm unable to locate this exact model in the Waterbury book. 401a. C.1900, Ansonia "Regulator A" in walnut. This clock has one of the nicest cases I've seen in a long while. The dial has been improperly repapered & needs attention. Retains original black label as well as the retailers label from Ripley, Derbyshire, England; ht 32" $375-475
401b. C.1880, A specialty Hotel clock with Seth Thomas movement. This clock came out of the old hotel on Main St in Guilford, ME, approx 1960. the hotel had 84 rooms and there are 84 pegs on this clock, with brass numbered room tags (about 1/2 remain). If a person requests an alarm bell at say 7:30, the clerk moves the tab down to the lower section, which is divided into 12 hours by 15 minute intervals. A real piece of Americana; ht 38" $800-1000
401c. C.1830, Riley Whiting, Winchester, Conn, carved column & paw feet shelf clock. Original 30 hour wooden works. The veneered splat is old, although one would expect a carved one. Also note the entire backboard has been replaced with a board that is a bit too thick, and the top trim has been carved to suit. Nice cast bezel with one piece porcelain dial; height 39" $1750-2250

459. C.1858 (dated casting) Bradley & Hubbard (signed case) "Blinking Lion" iron novelty. This clock now has a small Terry pivoted pendulum movent that has been adapted to the small case by adding a small counter weight above the pivot point. Despite being a marriage, the case is interesting with 50% of the original paint, and some varnish over the rust. There has been no effort to touch up the colors and it has a great look; runs; ht 8" $800-1200

528. C.1880, German, 30 hour painted dial clock, T/S/Alarm ( the dial is 14 x 21 cm), as-found. The alarm cord and weight are missing, one side cover is missing. Note the dial has split, top, to bottom and been reglued; needs attention; ht 8" $100-150
529. C.1890, French Boulle style shelf clock of inlaid brass & red tortoise shell. There are several loose bits of brass & shell and some pieces are missing. Good Japy movement strikes the hours on a gong; porcelain dial has remains of retailer: J. E. Caldwell, Philada; ht 15" $350-450
530. C.1975, Swiss, LeCoultre "Atmos" in complete, sound condition. Case retains original gilding & lacquer. Seems to run but will likely need cleaning; ht 9" $250-300
531. C.1875, E. N. Welch Mfg, "Peerless" shelf clock, 8-day T/S/Alarm in wonderful original condition with good label. Oak was not a popular choice at this time, but this case is of solid oak and veneers with original finish; note great tablet with double horn of plenty; ht 15.5" $175-225
532. C.1830, Hotchkiss & Field, Burlington, Conn, 30 hour wooden works beveled front shelf clock. This clock was "restored" in 1971, the flaking dial touched up and plastic tacked over the deteriorating label. Best part of the clock is the curtain & column tablet. The mov't is in good shape and seems to run & strike; the case with bruises & scrapes but retains original finish; ht 25" $150-200
533. C.1950, 110 volt Advertising sign and clock for "Croft Brewing co.-- Dry, Pure, Sparkling". 15" square dial is in excellent condition. The case, now black, needs a new paint job (but is not dented); Clock runs fine, but plug needs replacing; ht 27" $150-200
534. C.1930, Ritter Dental Mfg. Co., NY, master light & tool control for an early electric dental office. Gauges monitor air and water pressure, and with rheostats for lights and motor speed. Finally in the center, an electric clock with porcelain dial. The marble front has been cracked and repaired; ht 26" $200-300
535. C.1890, Swiss, Musical Christmas Tree Stand, for the German market; plays two tunes, repeating each one twice before shifting the cylinder: Silent Night & the Redeemer. Music box plays well with no broken teeth, but the metal cover is worn, especially around the perimeter and will need the attaching holes reinforced. Complete with original key and tree holder; dia = 14" $300-400
536. C.1900, Ansonia "Regulator B" in oak, in good, as-found condition. time & strike movement is dirty, but clock is original and will clean up nicely; ht 32" $300-400
537. C.1920, French, brass cased carriage clock, time only, with cylinder platform intact. right beveled pane has a chip and clock needs cleaning. This model was the cheapest to produce,; note the 8 little thumbscrews actually hold the case together and the brass pieces are of rolled brass rather than cast; ht 5" $90-120
538. C.1890, Yale Clock Co., cast spelter pendulette in very good condition, with original dial; no chips in case and in running order; ht 4.5" $990-120
539. C.1910, French brass cased carriage clock, time & alarm, with original pin pallet/platform intact (yes). Note the alarm bell is missing and clock is dirty. However all the beveled glass and dial are perfect; ht 5.75" $100-150
540. C.1870, English portable scale of very nice quality with a tray of weights, the whole fitting in a hinged tin box for transport; ht 11" $90-120
541. C.1880, English portable scale, unitized in a small walnut box with drawer, which holds the balance & beam when disassembled; ht 10" $125-175
542. C.1890, English, a vest pocket portable scale of exceptional quality. The nicely polished walnut case only 5.5" x 2.25" and holds the nickel plated beam, pans and a variety of weights. A great conversation piece, $175-225
543. C.1840, Unsigned weight banjo, Boston area. Note that when original back and the hanger pulled off, someone reinforced the entire back with a 3/8" piece of wood. The throat glass is from another clock and must be cut to fit. This banjo is a project; height 33" $500-700
544. C.1840, Birge & Fuller, eight day Fusee OG, with full label of: J. J. Beals & Co., Blackstone @ Union, Haymarket Square, Boston. The case itself has had veneer repair and too heavy varnish applied. But the absolutely fabulous Beals label is near perfect, as is the dial. Movement is clean and going. A rare clock; ht 23" $600-700
