Saturday Lots

Thank you in advance for taking extra care in handling clocks during the viewing period. We realize time is short; however, your respect for the customer who will take the item home is sincerely appreciated.

Items on which the description begins with three stars [***], are consigned by the deaccession committee of the American Clock and Watch Museum in Bristol, Connecticut. All but one item are European, and the one American item is a perfume spray device with clockwork mechanism. Proceeds will assist the museum in acquiring rare American clocks.

Although there are a few items with reserve, the two collections and all museum items are selling without reserve.

Another note: the Chinese are intelligent and industrious folks and their current economic slowdown has really given them incentive in the repro "antique" business. Novelty items such as swinging arms, 3-dial desk clocks, animated alarm clocks, Monk clocks, etc should be studied carefully; see lots 103 and 104, where we have indicated the mixed origin.

First Session, Saturday, 6pm

[Remember, you can search for certain words on the page with your browser's "find" command (Control-F)]

1. C.1900, Seth Thomas "12 Inch Drop Octagon", as-found. This clock came from Chicago and has an old Chicago Board of Education property sticker on the back. The bezel is new & incorrect and lacks glass, but otherwise this is a decent short drop with original finish, dial, movt, pendulum and tablet that can be cleaned up nicely. Height 23.5" $175-275

2. C.1896, E. Ingraham & Co., "Topaz" Oak Kitchen clock with calendar in outstanding original condition. There is a minor tear in the paper dial at 4, otherwise this is a great original clock with good tablet, original finish [nicely crazed] and pendulum; remains of rear label. Note the case retains original thermometer and liquid barometer intact; ht 23" $175-275

3. C.1868, Seth Thomas, "Tudor No. 1", 8-Day time, strike and alarm in very good condition. The only thing that keeps this from being excellent is some veneer chips along the edge of the door [plus additional lifting along the edge]. A person handy with small veneer repairs can end up with a super clock. The basic rosewood is lively and full of grain and a good color and with original finish; good label; dial repainted professionally; ‘ST’ hands; door lock intact, but no key; height 16" $125-175

4. C.1850, Bristol area 8-Day Iron front with mother of pearl inlay, still in good condition. The consignor paid a repairman to go through this clock, and he put on some new Waterbury style hands, which can be changed. The dial is original; no label. Runs and is attractive; height 15" $100-150

5. C.1915, Seth Thomas, Long Alarm in excellent original condition. This clock retains original bronzed finish [with some wear], and a very good original dial that is still white. We always have one or two of these in a sale, but this one is exceptional; height 9" $60-90

6. ***C.1925, German, Black Forest Cuckoo, hunter motif, with rabbit & pheasant, as-found. This clock has seen some rough use and the case has several glue repairs, and the deer antlers have been replaced with mini steer horns, however the carving has excellent detail. The original bellows have failed and need recovering. Has cast plate movement and seems to run. Height 21" $90-120

7. C.1904, Ansonia Clock Co., "Cute", ladies boudoir clock. This clock has been apart and is missing the 3 case screws to hold the movement in; the minute hand has been replaced with one slightly too large, and the brass easel has been dropped and is bent. Still, it is noteworthy that case retains original silver plating, and the dial is xlnt; overall good condition. Tries to run; height 4" $50-75

8. C.1925, New Haven "Winsome" banjo, striking on a straight steel rod, and with silvered dial with embossed numerals. Note the throat is from a larger New Haven model and has been re-glued oddly to fit. Looks OK from a distance. This is a long pendulum movement; bob is incorrect. Can be cleaned up; height 27.5" $100-150

9. C.1860, D. Pratt label on Ingraham "Doric", 30-hour time and strike in rosewood case. The dial has been repapered some time ago and with wear; the floral tablet with flaking; attractive rosewood on case; height 16" $90-120

10. C.1870, Seth Thomas mini Column & Cornice, 8-day lyre movement, now with a plugged dial from a mini OG. Has a great label and original hands, and worth looking for a dial; minor veneer chips on case, but generally very good; height 16" $150-200

11. C.1870, Seth Thomas mini Column & Cornice, 8-day lyre movement, in generally good condition with original dial, label, ST hands and pendulum; some minor veneer chips; height 16" $175-225

12. C.1870, Atkins Clock Co., "Venetian" shelf clock in walnut in good+ condition. The case has been stripped and could use a little more finish; spade hands are new and too short. Eagle tablet is a recent transfer and is cracked. Height 15.5" $90-120

12-a C.1915, Seth Thomas "Dana No. 3", Adamantine with imitation rosewood finish. This clock was professionally restored and is ready for your home or shop. The cello dial has a small stain by the 4. Has a good #89-C movement striking the hours on a gong and the halves on a bell. Adamantine veneer is in good condition and nicely polished. Nice beginner’s clock. Height 11" $100-125

12-b C.1920, Seth Thomas "Alto" Adamantine in very good condition, fresh from a shop. The cello veneer is in excellent condition, nicely polished. Good painted dial with no flakes. Nice beginner’s clock Height 9½" $100-125

13. C.1920, Waltham Clock Co, for Reed & Barton 8-day mahogany shelf clock in the English style with carved flowing leaves on each side of the base. The strike side has gotten hung up, as the warning lever will not fall, however, the platform appears to be intact. Nice engraved & silvered dial is signed Reed & Barton; original Waltham hands. Some TLC will produce a nice clock. 9" $175-275

14. C.1925, Seth Thomas, "Salem" 8-Day Cottage in very good original condition. The dial has started to flake [a known Seth Thomas malady], but the rest of the clock is clean and original. A good beginning collector’s clock; height 13" $75-100

14-a C.1910, New Haven "Norwich Line – A", perhaps the most attractive pressed oak clock ever made. This case features two slender vases up the sides, overflowing with flowers across the top. The dial has been repapered, however the rest of the clock is original. The case has not been stripped, but has been wiped down with alcohol to a golden oak color. I would expect several customers to compete for this clock; height 25" $175-275

15. C.1910, E. Ingraham & Co., "Marbelite No.5" 8-day mantel clock in superior original condition. Although this clock won’t have its’ hundredth birthday for a while, this is as clean an example of the marbelizing process as you will find, and with "like-new" original dial; ht 11.5" $100-150

16. C.1880, Nicholas Muller’s Sons & Co., {signed movement} , "Moscow" model cast iron front clock. This clock has some problems, but is worthy of restoration. The alarm and set mechanism is missing; the case was originally bronzed with green verdigris accents, and has been painted black. Retains wonderful Muller cast pendulum with a Roman bust in the center {bust is loose}. Movement recently cleaned and is running and striking fine; height 17" $125-175

17. C.1880, Waterbury Clock Co, mini 8-day OG with alarm in good condition. This is an interesting Vermont clock with a note on the back verifying its’ ownership by the Galbraith family. The tablet is now clear and has a print of a mother teaching her daughter to spin yarn. Minor veneer repairs, and with original finish and dial; good label; height 19" $150-200

18. C.1860, Daniel Pratt, Reading, Mass, 30-Hour OG in very good condition. This clock is from a home in Lynn, Mass, and has been in regular loving use. The case has a couple of veneer repairs and has been varnished over a couple of times. Retains original dial, hands, label, latch, old mirror. A nice beginner’s clock, running and ready to enjoy. Height 26" $100-150

19. C.1885, Seth Thomas "Eclipse" walnut parlor clock, as-found. This is desirable model that needs some restoration. The case was stripped and needs a better finish; one small trim molding is missing from top, and the bezel has been painted with gold paint. Retains original dial, hands, tablet, pendulum & interior label with corner tear. 8-day, T/S/Alarm. Although it is running, needs proper ST type suspension yoke. Height 24.5" $125-175

20. C.1920, German, Junghans, Round Gothic Mahogany mantel clock in good as-found condition. The silvering is rubbed off the dial around the 12, and there are some minor scrapes in the case. Has a good solid plate Junghans movement and strikes on a deep tone gong. Heavy beveled glass in brass frame door. Height 10.5" $75-100

21. C.1860, Seth Thomas Empire Gilt Column, 30-hour in generally good original condition with great dial, tablet {neat with gilt border}, and original gilding on the columns. The label is a little weak with some flaking, and the time click has been rounded off and will not hold, so you will need to service the movement right away; height 25" $125-175

22. C.1895, Seth Thomas "Adamantine" mantel clock in excellent original condition. This is a good model, green and black with triple full columns on either side of the dial. The movement is clean and the clock has been in daily operation. Celluloid is in good condition, and has never been polished; height 11" $100-150

23. C.1900, Seth Thomas "Formosa" Adamantine model in good original condition. There is a 1" chip in the celluloid just above the 11 that will need attention. The movement is clean and going and in daily use; color is black with tan accents; ht 11" $75-100

24. C.1880, Ansonia Beehive, 8-day shelf clock in rosewood, in restored condition. There are some chips and repairs to the veneer, and the dial was professionally repainted by the Dial House. Door has a slight warp; retains old mirror. The movement has been cleaned and the clock seems to run and strike fine; ht 19" $175-225

25. C.1885, By Seth Thomas for "Windward’s Eight Day Railway Alarm Clocks", 8-day walnut cased gingerbread. This is a scarce item with unusual time and alarm movement with an alarm train in place of the strike train. With NAWCC bulletin #150 article copy with info on alarm. This "Newark" case has the top from another walnut model [looks OK], and a catalog page showing this tablet on other ST models. Has a lever out the top of the case for shutting off the alarm. As I see it, the conductor [or engineer] used this LOUD alarm at home to get him to the station on time. Dial repapered and hands new. With original overpaste label inside. Height 22" $150-250

26. ***C.1930, E. Ingraham & Co., "Treasure Island" banjo, with restoration. The tablets are modern photo-copies of the original Treasure Island set. This model has a ding-dong strike, and one of the rods is broken, so it is only striking on a single note at this time. Case with original dial, finish, bezel & eagle; a little work will finish off a nice clock. Height 39" $300-400

26-a C.1910, New Haven "Thoreau" Crystal Regulator in very clean restored condition. The only shortcoming on this clock is that the dial center was damaged and the workman filled it in and painted it pure white, so it is a bit noticeable against the cream colored chapter ring. The chapter too, has a couple of hairlines, but is generally very good. The top and bottom case castings retain most of their original gilding, and are undamaged. Correct hands and pendulum. Height 15¼" $325-425

27. C.1890, French, Bronzed Spelter Mantel garniture set, as-found. The theme is great—"The Onion Boy", but this clock took a tumble and the boy is broken at the ankle. If you are good at spelter repair you can save this once elegant clock. Has a good round French bell strike movement; no pendulum; dark pink onyx base are in good shape; feet loose; height 19" $175-275

28. C.1890, Ansonia "Triumph" mirror side in walnut with restorations. The top scroll and fan are newly carved and are a little shy on detail. The rest is original; dial, tablet, pendulum & cherubs, and case otherwise has original finish. Height 24.5" $225-325

29. C.1925, German, Kienzle, Westminster chime bracket clock, as-found. This is basically a good clock, but has some leftover holes from European powder beetles. The heavy full plate movement is signed with Kienzle’s flying wing trademark, and as this clock comes from storage, the movement will need service for reliable operation. Has good tone; mahogany finish on poplar; silvered embossed dial & beveled glass; ht 16" $175-275

30. C.1920, Seth Thomas, Westminster Chime mantel clock, chiming on steel rods. This is the same case as Chime Clock No. 14, but later. The movements were removed for restoration and the chime movement was not put back in straight and you can NOT wind it at the moment. [it was fully wound when installed and does operate]. The case refinished and the brass ball feet are from a hardware store [should be small cushion feet]. Height 15" Worth $200 if correct. $90-120

31. C.1895, F. Kroeber, "China No. 12 –French" as-found. The dark green case has a recent crack, at 6, straight down through the bottom. The last fellow to work on the movement, didn’t understand the Eclipse pendulum, so took off the retainer and added a regular suspension and pendulum. Dial OK. There are no chips in the case, and the crack is not prominent, just needs to be dealt with. Label dark but legible. Would be $650 if perfect. Height 11" $175-275

32. C.1870, New Haven 30-Hour Cottage with original tablet, dial and finish. The door is a little loose on its hinges, but the clock is overall an excellent beginner’s clock. Perfect timepiece for the guest bedroom. Height 10.5" $75-100

33. C.1900, New Haven "Cunard Line", Pressed oak gingerbread, restored. The case has been stripped and is a bit dull. The dial repapered and antiqued. Case back retains 80% label with model name. Height 22" $90-120

34. C.1895, French, Japy Freres, Black marble mantel clock in very good condition. The well made movement has a perfect porcelain dial with open escapement. Although the case has some minor edge chips, it has never been dropped & is quite presentable, and with onyx accents. 8-day, strikes the hours on a gong. Height 10" $100-150

34-a C.1973 [dated presentation], Japan, Linden repro ‘Elephant Swinger’ in good condition. This clock is a one owner, fresh from an estate sale and is virtually "Like New". These 8-day Lindens are very reliable runners. Height 12" If those new Chinese swingers {that only run 2 days} are worth $229, then this must be worth $300-400 !!

35. C.1955, German, Oswald Uhrenfabrik, "Monkey Time", novelty clock, on which the eyes rotate individually to indicate the hours and minutes. This particular clock was dropped at some time and the head broke completely off; it has been reglued and stained to match. This repair really only shows on close inspection. If the clock had never been damaged, it would bring $750. Height 7" $300-400

36. C.1925, German, Striking Tambour clock in an oak case with original finish. Has a nice silvered dial with raised numerals and strikes on a coiled wire gong. The base of the case has a nice embossed molding, and clock seems to run; ht 9" $50-80

37. C.1920, German, Junghans, World Time clock, as-found, less one dial, no pendulum, case unsoldered and less beacon cover; remaining dials are mostly missing hands; quite dirty. These are $1500 complete, but I’m guessing a couple hundred like this; height 22" $200-300

38. C.1900, Ansonia "Prism" Crystal Regulator, restored, and with some minor shortcomings. There is a ½ inch dimple in the case top, where something was dropped on it, and the porcelain dial has hairlines at 9:30 + 4:30. Still has a good open escape movement and runs well. A beginning collector would still appreciate the clock, at a price; ht 10¾ " $225-275

39. C.1900, Waterbury "Speck" mini carriage timepiece. This clock has been serviced and ticks fine, but the hour hand is in a bind against the brass dial and is not advancing. A little realignment is in order. Otherwise complete and sound with good beveled glass; height 2.8" $60-90

40. C.1900, German for the French market. You would swear it was French, but it is a well made German time only movement, round in the French style, and with a porcelain dial and gilt center. The classic Greek style black marble case with 3 reeded bronze columns on either side of the dial, and with gilt incising in the portico above and on the base. This is a nice beginners marble clock; height 12.75" $150-200

41. C.1880, E. Ingraham & Co., "Grecian–Mosaic", in restored condition. The case has been refinished and could use another coat, as the grain is still open. The dial has been redone by the Dial House and is excellent, and the original green label is intact and bright and legible. 8-day, T/S/Alarm. Running. Height 14.5" $450-550

41-a C.1891, Waterbury "8-Inch Drop, R.C.", time and calendar in excellent restored condition. The mahogany veneer case has been attractively refinished and has a bright reddish-brown color. Retains original dial in superb condition with Waterbury trademark. The inside instruction label is dark and difficult to read, but is all there; small veneer chip by lower door latch; height 19" $300-400

42. C.1850, Chauncey Jerome, Time & Alarm 30-hour cottage clock in nice original condition. This is a sweet little clock, with an expanded base and little trim "wings" on the side. Retains original wooden dial in exceptional condition, and original dial tablet with floral corners, and the lower center with the stencil: "From: C. Jerome, New Haven, Conn". An interesting cottage; height 12.5" $200-300

43. C.1929, Waterbury "Ship’s Bell No. 10", in good, as-found condition. The case retains its original lacquer with some discoloration and will need polishing. The screws look untouched so assume movement has never been cleaned. It is sluggish; will tick if you turn the case and tries to strike. A thorough cleaning will put this clock in good order; diam = 8" $275-375

44. C.1865, Seth Thomas Mini Cottage with OG bottom in rosewood. This is a decent original clock; the bottom left got wet and the veneer has lifted and some chipped away; original dial with some larger flakes; great original tablet & super label. Refer to Ly’s new book on S.Thomas, page 425 for picture of this model and the type "C" time & alarm movement it has. Ht 9" $150-200

45. C.1915, Seth Thomas Adamantine mantel clock in generally good condition. The case has a couple of minor edge chips in the cello, but is OK; the movement was cleaned a short while ago and seems to run and strike fine; height 9.5" $75-100

46. C.1875, Wm. L. Gilbert, Winsted, Conn., 8-day T/S/Alarm cottage in generally good condition. The case was refinished some time ago, but clock retains original dial, hands, tablet and decent label. Tablet has a small stag in the center, and is starting to flake; small veneer chips along base. Height 15.5" $90-120

47. C.1940, Seth Thomas "Engine Lever" nickeled brass case time only engine room clock. Uses Seth Thomas heavy double wind movement [8-day model]. The case is worn to brass in a couple of spots, but retains a good silvered dial. The clock is mounted on a square plank of oak, with a separate hanger. Complete, but dirty and not running. Diameter of clock = 7" $150-200

48. C.1880, mixed lot: an Ansonia steeple case, now with a C.1870 Waterbury 8-day movement. Dial looks original; hands later. Ht 20" $75-100

49. C.1880, Seth Thomas "Eclipse" walnut mantel clock, with restorations. I wish I knew the fellow who made the new top for this Eclipse, as it is outstanding, even antiqued on the front to look old [new cuts apparent on rear]. He made one mistake..got the tablet in backwards, so if you clean this tablet, you’ll clean the original design off. Still this is a decent old clock that can be detailed and retailed; would be $250 if original; height 24" $125-175

50. C.1910, Seth Thomas Clock Co., Thomaston, Conn., "Wales" model mahogany shelf clock in very clean condition. The only minor flaw is a barely visible hairline in the porcelain dial at 5:30. Uses good round movement with rack and snail striking on a cathedral gong. This is a perfect beginning collector’s clock in good running order and with very pleasant style; height 10.75" $175-225

51. C.1970, German, Regula, "Apostle Clock" in very good and complete condition. This Black Forest clock is not a cuckoo, rather it strikes on a bell and then moves to the music sequence upon which the apostles begin to march in a circle, and the trumpeters on either side raise and lower their horns. The movement is dry but I coaxed it to go through the cycle. This is one of the neatest modern novelties I’ve seen in a while. Basic case is plywood, but all figures are plastic; the fancy cathedral style design is "wall papered". The movement is not dirty nor worn and should respond to simple oiling. Height shown is less pendulum {6"} and weights. Case ht = 15", width = 11" $150-200

52. C.1926 [dated movement], English fusee drop dial. The good chain-fusee movement is quite heavy and still runs robustly through a bit of grime. The pendulum rod has a solder repair. The 11" dial was repainted and the chapter ring is about ½" too large, so the nickeled bezel covers up part of it. The mahogany bezel has separated at the glue joint and needs to be carefully reglued. A heavy and well made clock that will respond nicely to some work; height 19" $200-300

52-a C.1910, French for Tiffany & Co. {signed dial}, a good mahogany cased tambour clock with Marti rack strike movement and excellent porcelain dial. The fancy mahogany case has a horizontal dry split at 4 and 8 o’clock, otherwise is complete and attractive with original finish. A good beginner’s tambour. Ht 11" $150-200

52-b C.1910, French, Cast Iron Clock and Baro-meter combination. Has a good 8-day movement striking on a bell. The porcelain dial has come loose from its retainers [probably a couple of pins] and needs to be secured on the dial plate as it is swimming around just now. Brass scale thermometer is intact and working. Aneroid barometer is complete, but we are unaware if it is reading properly. Lots of "look" for the money. Height 24" $275-325

52-c C.1820, English, 8-Day Brass Dial tall clock movement, weights and pendulum. Dial size 13" x 19". The shield in the arch engraved with the name David Somervill, St. Niniams. {listed in Brittens}. This is a substantial movement, with modest wear, relatively clean, needing only a case. The pendulum wire got broken in transit, but can be easily spliced. Dial has highly detailed cast spandrels, sea serpents in the arch, and calendar aperture above the 6. Chapter ring is engraved and silvered; hands are original. 10 lb. weights are cast iron. $500-700

52-d C.1910, Holtzer-Cabot Electric Company, Boston & Chicago, "Mageto Clock", with original Seth Thomas, 15 day time only movement on cast iron bracket. The case is solid oak [and heavy], with carved trim at the top of the door, and a super original tablet with all the Holtzer info. The interior is missing the Holtzer device {bare terminals are there}, and it is at this point, just a big timepiece. Original dial + hands and runs OK. Height 42" $250-350

52-e C.1850, Wm. L. Gilbert, Winchester, Conn {on label}, neat 30 hour cottage timepiece, with early ladder type movement, mounted to a seatboard. The dial is fading, the rosewood case has been refinished [and there are breaks in the veneer on the base, and some one chiseled a hole in the bottom of the case]. Still retains original hands and a great tablet. Some potential here. Height 9¼" $175-225

52-f C.1905, Waterbury "Conductor", time + alarm carriage clock in good original condition, running and alarming. Porcelain dial and bev glass are perfect; original hands intact; height 4.5" $125-175

52-g C.1905, Waterbury "Sage" time, strike + repeat carriage clock in original condition, with hairlines across the dial. The beveled glass is all good, and it runs OK and repeats fine. Ht 5.4" $150-200

52-h C.1905, Waterbury "Speck" mini carriage timepiece in good condition with perfect dial and original hands. Height 2.75" $75-100

52-j C.1949, Dutch, Post War hood clock. These were later made in Germany, but this one is marked made in Holland. This one has a fancy brass dial with cast cherub spandrels and a rolling moon in the arch.. This clock is from a home in Mass, and has not run in a while and the oil has gelled {needs cleaning} However it is complete and sound and we’ve made sure the 8-day movement will function. Strikes on a bell. Height 28" $175-225

52-k C.1920, Seth Thomas, one of their metal cases. This is an interesting clock, with a brass base, topped by a detailed floral casting , which supports a barrel shaped brass cylinder that houses the movement. This clock got bumped on the top and has remains of the dent, but is otherwise original and sound and has been recently cleaned and is running fine. Silvered dial with raised bronze numerals. Height 8½" $175-275

52-L C.1890, German, Flying Dial trademark, a good R-A wall timepiece, in a walnut case, less crown and with one finial chewed by the dog. This is a good solid plate movement with cut pinions and a perfect porcelain dial. Several crowns are available from suppliers, or make your own. Seems to run fine; minor abrasions on case. Height in photo = 28" $175-225

52-m C.1911, New Haven "Chime No. 4", mahogany cased, Westminster chime mantel clock, as-found. This clock runs and chimes fine, the movements recently overhauled. However, the repairman replaced the lost finials with stuff out of his parts bin, and you will need to have 5 wooden finials turned [line drawings are available in several New Haven catalogs].Also the rear door has no screws in the hinges, and will need attaching. The finish on the clock is original and there are no dings nor chips in the case. This is a $600 clock when right, so our estimate reflects the needed work. Ht 19" $300-400

52-n C.1910, New Haven "Branford" Pressed oak school clock in nice original condition. The ‘ears’ have been knocked off and reglued, but other than that, this is a good original clock with original paper dial {some discoloration}, and pendulum. Remains of a label on the rear. Nice beginner school clock. Ht 27½" $325-425

53. C.1915, E. Ingraham & Co., "Urania" Calendar from their Star Line. This clock was restored by an amateur who did a good job of refinishing the case which is attractive golden oak. He got the right paper dial too. But he cut the suspension wire too short and has it way out of beat. I think most of you can cope with this. Height 22.75" $175-225

54. C.1920, Sessions "Hilton" Short Drop Octagon mini school clock. Basically a good clock; the oak case has been refinished a bit dark. Rear label is about 1/3 flaked away. Original paper dial is still quite good and clock. Typical Welch style time only movement will tick if you put pressure on the minute hand, but is gummy and needs cleaning; height 19" $150-200

55. C.1925, Fynetone Co., Lansdale, Pa., interesting mantel set. The clock case and candle stands are turned out of solid mahogany, and retain good original finish. The 8-day lever movement of unknown origin is complete, ticks & stops. Porcelain dial is good. Ht 14.5" $90-120

56. C.1930, French, Art Deco Box clock, with Westminster chimes. Dealer on dial: Paris-Besancon, 30 Rue St. Antoine. This is an attractive walnut case with leaded and beveled glass in good condition. The substantial movement is sound but needs service; height 26" $125-175

57. C.1920, German, Gustav Becker, Walnut cased box clock [no top]. Has a good solid plate movement with cut pinions and dead beat ‘scape, serial number 665294. With a heavy Harfen-Gong and a chord of 4 steel rods for the hour strike. Height 24" $90-120

58. C.1925, German, Junghans, Walnut box clock with strike on single steel rod. Clean embossed dial and with original case top; ht 28" $100-150

This clock came to us from storage, and the front glass is cracked, bottom finials missing, and small cast head missing from top trim. 68. C.1900, a Gilbert "No. 59" Porcelain China case, NOW with a C.1890, Boston Clock Co., tandem wind striking movement with lever escapement. White with light purple flowers and highlights. Height 10.75" $225-325

69. C.1900, Ansonia Royal Bonn "La Cruz", as-found, less outer bezel and with soiled paper dial. The case itself is Ok, with minor wear on gold highlights. No dust cover. 77. C.1910, German, Junghans, Swinging Arm clock, now on a good German statue of Joan of Arc, patinated bronze over spelter. The porcelain dial on the clock is xlnt and it seems to run OK. 78. C.1870, Ansonia Brass & Copper Co, Ansonia, Conn, mahogany short drop chisel bottom timepiece in restored condition. This is clean and running, but is a bit over-restored, the stain a bit too red and the new "ears" painted gloss black. The dial paper is also new. The movement has anchor ‘scape, and strikes the hours on a large bell, and then repeats them again 2 minutes after the hour. Most collectors call this a "prayer strike", as it was custom to observe 2 minutes of meditation on the hour. 79-b. C.1900, New Haven "Diadem - Zebra" in rosewood. The case and original tablet + dial on this clock are super. Sadly it lost its alarm mechanism. 79-c. C.1870, Jerome & Co. [New Haven], 30-Hour T/S/Alarm Beehive in restored condition, running. Case refinished long ago; otherwise complete and original with xlnt full green label, good dial and hands; height 18.5" $125-175

79-d. C.1900, Wm. L. Gilbert, unusual novelty clock. The base and clock bezel are cast iron with brass plating [worn]. A tear shaped glass globe with interior marbleizing connects the two, and with a typical 30-hour lever movement [not running]. 79-j. C.1855, Connecticut Candle Stand clock, with round plates, stamped pillars {like Terryville Mfg} and a gilt wood stand. Using a short, pivoted pendulum. The only shortcoming on this clock is the cracked dome, which has been glued for some time. The clock itself retains paper dial {probably replaced at some time} old hands, and although dirty, is running briskly. The gilt-wood stand is bright and yellow with no flakes in gilding. Cute clock. Height 9" $175-225

80. ***C.1967, Swiss, LeCoultre "Atmos", as-found, complete, but needing repairs. Serial number 214162, Calibre 528-6. 82. ***C.1903, A Clockwork, Coin-Op Perfume dispenser, made for Crown Perfumery Co., London, incomplete. These are American, made by H. C. Height 15" $200-300

83. ***C.1920, German, Junghans Westminster chime bracket clock in very good condition with original finish, chime rods, pendulum , etc. The only obvious repair is the minute hand, which was broken and soldered. 86. C.1910, Gilbert "Observatory" store regulator, from a barn in Chatham. This clock is as-found, the movement still ticks and "groans" out a strike from a dry movement; the hands are rusty and the case shows signs of having been wet. The original dial is discolored [but worth keeping], and the tablets are original as well. The top splat got knocked off and the center trim lost; will need attention. Will restore to a decent clock; height 37" $250-300

87. C.1910, National Time Switch Co., South Bend, Indiana, a round gallery clock made by Ansonia and modified by this company for sending on off electrical signals. Retains original dial with two subsidiary 24 hour dials, labeled "ON" & "OFF" [below the 10 and 2]. The set hands for on/off are missing; the left side of the case is missing door and part of the panel. The movement seems to be missing one spring in the complicated timing mechanism. The time side does run as is, and what is left appears to be original. Diam = 16" $175-275

88. C.1920, German, Junghans, Westminster Chime bracket clock, with Art Nouveau influence. Dark oak case has brass inlay on the front in Nouveau pattern [note one strip of brass is missing]. 92. C.1942, Chelsea, Clock Co., Ship’s Timepiece in a black bakelite case, and with 24 hour dial and center seconds. This clock is in good original condition. The only shortcoming are 3 dial screws that were lost and replaced with modern ones. Runs. Diameter = 7.5" $150-200

93. C.1985, Ethan Allen, "Lawyer’s Regulator", as new in original box, from a Boston jeweler. This clock was originally damaged in transit, and returned to Gravely Furniture for case repair. When it was received back in 1985, it got stuck on a shelf and forgotten. We opened it and removed packing for the first time. Although it ticks and strikes, it could use some oil. An interesting model with German calendar mechanism, and movement. Strikes the hours on a gong. Dark cherry finish. Diamond on left in photo is original Ethan Allen tag. Height 37" $100-200

94. C.1960, Foreign [probably German], "Garde" Chess Timer. This item consists of two rear wind lever clocks, set into a mahogany case, inlaid with a satinwood stripe. Players in turn press the knob above their timer when they have made their move, stopping their clock and starting their opponents. Both clocks have a red spoked wheel that turns when running. This item is new, in the box [box stained], from a Boston jeweler. Both clocks run well. Height 5" $75-100

95. C.1863, Seth Thomas, Gilt Column [small], 8-day spring, time, strike & alarm. This clock has been refinished and there are some small chips in the veneer. The columns have been regilded. Original dial with some flaking; original tablet is flaking. Interior label is coming loose. Some TLC could improve this clock; height 16" $150-200

96. C.1940, International Time Recording Co., time only version of their heavy and reliable clock. Uses large double wind movement on a cast iron base. With original hands, dial and pendulum, and winding key. 101. C.1880, German, Urania 2-Weight wall regulator in the Viennese style. Although this clock retains its original top, it has seen some rough service. Both door latches are missing, the top center of door has a dry split, the weights are a different diameter; strike cord has gotten wrapped around the arbor, and movement is not original to the case. Still, this is an above average 2-weight with a well made movement, and the cosmetic changes can be handled by almost anyone; height 50" $500-700

102. C.1941, Hamilton Watch Co., Lancaster PA, Model 21 Chronometer, serial number 940, now in a later mahogany box. The chronometer is in good working order, last serviced in 1985, and with bright dial and original hands and key. Dial = 4" Box = 7.5" $800-1200

103. WITHDRAWN a C.1925, German Diana Statue, now with a new Asian copy of the Junghans arm, complete with spurious Junghans trademark on porcelain dial. Height 14" Would be $900 if correct; my guess as is: $250-300 Do not bid on this or next lot.!

104. WITHDRAWN a C.1925, German elephant statue, now with a new Asian copy of the Junghans arm, and with a chip in the porcelain dial at 6. Height 10" Would be $900 if correct, my guess: $275-325

107. C.1880, New Haven, Small Weight OG. New Haven was proud of their line of ¾ size weight driven OGs. This one has lost most of its’ label, the dial is papered over, and the hands are replaced. But it is otherwise complete and sound, running. Note this clock has one of those fabulous repro, New York geometric tablets that everyone likes; ht 21" $175-275

108. C.1880, Anglo-American Papier-mâché clock with mother of pearl inlay over black lacquer base. Typical Connecticut 8-day movement and hands. The dial was repapered some time ago. This is a very decorative clock, runs and strikes on a bell. Ideal beginner’s clock; height 28" $300-400

109. C.1910, Lovell Manufacturing, Erie, PA, "Meridian" short drop ionic calendar. Note this clock was made under contract by E. Ingraham & Co., but bears no marks to prove it. It has typical poplar bezels, faux grained to dark rosewood. The paper dial has gotten wet and has some bubbles and wear. The calendar hand is a replacement. Movement dirty and needs cleaning. Otherwise a good old clock with decent Lovell label inside [with tears]; height 24" $300-400

110. C.1890, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 2" in oak, as-found. This clock came to us from storage and will need some attention. There are a couple of large veneer chips on the bezel and the dial has been poorly touched up and will need a repaint. The pendulum has a few small dents; weight and movement are fine. These seem to bring $1500 when they are sharp, but we’re guessing half that on this one; ht 36" $600-800

111. C.1880, Ithaca "No. 10 Farmer’s" model double dial, perpetual calendar, with restorations. This clock seems to run Ok, but has had some work: the tip to the top was broken away and improperly restored. The back to the clock was lost and replaced with plywood, now hinged on the left side [a neat idea]. Case refinished; retains original dials, rollers and movements {walnut is not two-tone as it appears in photo}. Ht 25" $400-500

112. C.1900, German, for J. E. Caldwell, Philada, Westminster chime bracket clock. Has a heavy, unsigned, W+H movement, and chimes on 5 wide flat wire gongs attached to a substantial brass standard. The rest of the case is fine, with line inlay around the front and mahogany frets on the sides; engraved dial; height 12" $275-375

113. C.1900, French, Porcelain China Clock in pink. This is a lovely clock, but has a nearly unnoticeable 3" crack on the right side, and a small painted over chip at the very top center. The basic color is a very pale pink with medium pink trim on the edges, with gold highlights, and with small violet colored flowers. Strikes the hours and halves on gong. Affordable beginner’s china; ht 11.5" $150-250

114. C.1875, Seth Thomas Sons & Co., New York, "Rebecca at the Well" figural clock. This clock is a one owner from the Worcester area. The original paint has several chips and scratches and some touch up, but is generally in very good condition.; biggest hurt is that the top palm leaf [see catalog] is broken away, and long ago, so the stump is corroded. If you didn’t have the catalog to compare, you would never miss the leaf. With unique original pendulum, and good porcelain dial. Running; ht 16" $500-600

115. C.1977, E. Howard & Co., Boston, Model 59. First off, this clock runs OK, and keeps time. I can’t imagine how the case would have gotten separated from its original movement, but it did. A resourceful guy then found a Howard Model 10 movement [dated 12-75, serial #0004] with invar pendulum and bolted them in [perfect fit]. Still a good looking model, and at least all the parts are Howard. Case identical to lot 316, complete with all finials and door latch; minor nicks and scratches; height 46" Estimate: $700-900

116. C.1890, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 2" in oak, restored. Despite some missing veneer on the bezel, [has been faux grained in where it is absent] this clock has been cleaned up nicely, and the rest of the case is clean as can be, and with original inside label. The dial has been professionally restored and the clock is in good running order. Ht 36" $750-950

117. C.1830, Connecticut 30-hour Wooden Works tall clock. This pine case is tall and slender with a long door. Careful, the top door is not now attached and will fall off. Finials are later. The movement is a typical Connecticut type with count-wheel on the rear plate. The dial was repainted some time ago, a simple chapter ring on white background and stencil corners. Includes a cloth bag containing 2 damaged wooden wheels that were recut. Height 94" $750-1000

117-a Mixed lot: a C.1890, Ansonia Swinging Arm, canister type, now with a French statue of the same period. The yoke or side frame on the swinger has been broken and soldered, and would benefit from a new yoke altogether: see Timesaver’s, part #18380 [only $10.50]. The arm is otherwise intact. The male figure in the spelter statue is dressed only in a simple cloth & retains original bronze finish. Although his right hand has a receptacle for a bar holder, it now has a piece of brass wire projecting to hold the suspension unit. See Tran Ly’s Ansonia book, page 698 for dimensions of a new bar holder. You can either fix this clock or use the parts for other restorations. Height 33" $1000-1500

118. C.1830, E. Terry & Son, Plymouth, Conn, stenciled half column and splat, short transitional. The splat is new; stencil on columns now weak; new tablet of country meeting house has no border. Great old dial has an unexplained hole patched at 11:30… an old patch. Carved feet are not original; ht 28" $275-375

119. C.1925, Seth Thomas, "Office No. 1" 30-Day time only with large double spring movement. The Seth Thomas catalog does not show this clock as a 30 day, but I see no evidence that this clock has been "made-up". It is in old oak with original finish, bezel and dial; the dial with an old name or location pencilled in under the "Made in USA". I leave origin up to you, but can confirm it is a nice looking clock; height 15.5" $175-275

120. C.1900, French, Black marble with green malachite inlay. This clock has a chip on the bottom right corner [not bad], and is otherwise in excellent original condition with perfect porcelain dial and with visible ‘scape and original ruby pallets. Bell strike movement #1330, and with matched number pendulum. Every beginning collector needs one good marble clock, and this will fill the bill. Height 8" $100-150

121. C.1909, German, Gustav Becker, serial #2,378,222 Edwardian box clock with original striking movement. This is a nice clean example of the simple style that was budding in the first quarter of this century. Note fancy door insert with 5 panes of heavily beveled glass. No extra holes in case, with signed movement and dial; original pendulum {matches dial}, pulleys and beat scale; the movement plate has original factory weight stops intact; height 34" $400-600

122. C.1970, Swiss, Thommen Mfg, for Wakmann Watch Co., NY, a lot of two good mechanical 8-day airplane clocks, new in the box, never used. 124. C.1950, German, small souvenir size barometer branded "Selsi" on dial. Thermometer and barometer seem intact; ht 9" $20-40

125. C.1935, German, mini dial clock, with good brass 30-hour pendulum movement. The wooden dial with a carved and painted scene of a chalet in summer, and some blemishes. Generally very good with original pendulum and key. Height 3" $50-70

126. C.1890, E.N. Welch, Blue Glass Paperweight clock, time and strike. This clock has the usual minor edge abrasions but is generally in good+ condition with perfect porcelain dial. It even ticks and strikes. Height 3.75" $175-225

127. C.1925, Seth Thomas, "Merrimac", Ship’s strike, with hinged bezel, marine clock in good original condition. The only thing that keeps this from being excellent is that it got bumped on the bezel at one time, so has a dent at 8 o'clock [not bad, but there]. Good silvered dial and running; polished brass; diameter = 7" $250-300

128. C.1925, Seth Thomas "Engine Lever", 8-day time only in good original condition, running and ready to enjoy; polished brass; diameter 7" $175-225

129. C.1912 [dated on back] Seth Thomas "Chicago" model, 8-day time and strike. This clock was exported to China and has their customs stamp on the back. The dial and tablet have both been repainted. The movement is properly marked "44" and with proper ST gong and pendulum. The label is missing a chunk, but amazingly this clock looks line "new" inside [it is old]. Height 17" $150-200

130. C.1830, an unsigned Massachusetts Banjo clock, with restoration. This clock has some potential for a talented cabinetmaker, but has had some major work. The wood behind the movement failed, and someone added a round piece of rolled aluminum to the back of the case as reinforcement; crystal missing [$5]. It has a new set of $150 tablets and the rope front case was regilded at a cost of $200. It does run and keep time; good potential. Height 33" $500-750

131. C.1865, Austrian, 1-weight Vienna regulator. This was consigned as a "Biedermeier", but is not; moreover it was held hostage and tortured. The case has been sprayed with high gloss black paint, and the pendulum sprayed with gold paint; beat scale painted gold also. Has a machine nut in lieu of rating nut. Weight is home-made, but adequate. Movement complete and running; height 47" $250-350

132. C.1890, Boston Clock Co, black marble & onyx mantel clock in excellent original condition. This is one of the nicer clocks in this evening’s sale. If a beginner wants one nice marble clock, this is the one. Good tandem wind, striking movement in running order, and fancy tu-tone porcelain dial with the numerals on raised buttons. Height 11" $200-300

133. C.1840, Boardman & Wells, Bristol, CT., 30-hour OG. This is a fairly clean clock with a good label. There is no evidence it ever had another dial, and yet the wooden dial has been routed on the reverse to clear the ‘scape wheel and verge. I can only attest that this dial has been on this clock a very long time, and it is still bright. The frosted tablet is maybe a 50 year old replacement, with wear [looks nice]. Height 26" $90-120

134. C.1855, Seth Thomas, Plymouth, Conn, 8-Day Column and Cornice in rosewood. The case and columns have been refinished and there are nicks in the veneer along the edge + rh return, and the right panel of veneer needs regluing. Has a decent label and super original tablets with floral centers. The original dial pan was repainted some time ago and with some flakes. Still a great piece of Americana; good weights; ht 32" $350-450

135. C.1910, Waterbury Clock Co, hanging gingerbread, 8-day, T/S/Alarm in good condition. Retains original dial, hands, tablet, pendulum and partial label on rear. The case has been refinished and is a dark honey color. Could be detailed some more, but is still a decent hanging gingerbread; height 25" $300-500

136. C.1890, French Picture Frame clock, the dial surround with inlaid mother of pearl in an attractive star burst pattern. Note the outer frame of this clock has warped and is putting undue pressure on the dial and should receive the attention of a cabinet maker. Has a good French movement, striking the hours on a gong. Height 23" $175-225

137. C.1909, Seth Thomas "Hudson", Thirty Day office clock. This clock came from an old mill office in Lowell, and is in good as-found condition, with both mainsprings broken. This is the mahogany version with contrasting satinwood inlay, and still with original grungy finish. Pendulum and all hardware intact, and the original 14" dial is very good, with only minor wear on the second bit. Be sure to order the correct springs. Height 18" $400-500

138. C.1910, English, Fusee Dial Clock, mahogany, with 11" repainted dial [looks good]. The cast bezel has been replaced with a spun brass one, and does do the job but could be improved. The chain has been replaced with heavy deep sea fishing line, and looks up to the task. Runs. Diam=14.5" $175-275

139. C.1940, International Time Recording Co, [later IBM], industrial 3 shift, 7-day punch clock, recording the shift & time when the large brass handle in the base unit is pressed. It rings a bell at the same time the card is imprinted. The ribbon has dried out and all you get at this point is an impression on the card, however the ribbon can be replaced. The dial has quite a bit of discoloration from oil, but is still quite legible. The oak case has been refinished to a golden color. Movement runs. Height 44" $350-550

Note, page and plate numbers referred to in 400 day descriptions are from the Horolovar 400 Day Clock Repair Guide, 10th Edition, 1991

140. C.1915, German, Jahresuhrenfabrik, 400 Day clock with disc pendulum, plate closely resembles #1618, serial number 162,220. This clock has seen hard use and the verge pivot has been poorly repaired with a solder sleeve, the center finial does not match the other 2, and there is a light haze of rust on the arbors and screws. Has a decent pendulum with top gallery, the adjusting shaft is slightly bent; dial good; no suspension; old heavy glass dome. Our estimate reflects condition; see next lot for better clock; height 11" $75-100

141. C.1907, German, Jahresuhrenfabrik, 400 Day clock with disc pendulum, plate number 1047, serial number 52,750. This model made for Urania, with fancy wide bezel. Retains original suspension guard [tube with bottom flange], deep step base, all finials intact, and small porcelain dial is perfect. Clean and running. Height 11" $150-250

142. C.1910, German, Gebr. Junghans, rare 400 day clock with governor style pendulum and in original mahogany glazed case with 3 panes of heavy beveled glass {rear glass is flat} See Horolovar Repair Guide, 10th ed., plate 1171 {round plates}, and section 13, number 31 for illustration of the pendulum. This clock also has a unique version of the Nouveau dial used on these Junghans models [original silvered brass]. The suspension hardware is all there, but the spring has been shortened and is too short at present for the clock to run. This is a very desirable clock; height 13" $750-1000

142-a C.1906, German, Kienzle Uhrenfabrik, 400 Day disc pendulum clock in an oval brass and glass case with fancy cloisonne enamel bands around both the top and bottom, as well as the bezel around the dial; colors are light blue, dark blue and violet. All beveled glass is perfect. The movement is a round, front wind, plate #1183. The pendulum is a definite Kienzle, with beveled brass edge, but the serial number does not match the movement. The guard rings are also lacking; rest of hardware is original and sound and the clock runs. A good looking clock. Height 11" $900-1200

143. C.1930, German, Jahresuhrenfabrik, "Louvre" model 400 day clock with 4-ball pendulum. This is a sound clock with good brass gazebo, never dropped. Somehow the dome got bumped and a small crescent shaped piece broke out and has been glued in; I don’t know if dome will survive shipping., but is plenty sturdy for a ride in the car. Porcelain dial is fine. Needs new suspension wire; includes original long winding key. See Horolovar, plate 1260. Height 17" $225-325

144. C.1954 , Kaiser "Universe" 400 Day clock. See 400 Day Clock Repair Guide, Appendix, number 34, for full details on what Terwilliger calls "...the best 400-Day clock ever made" This clock came from a home near Niagara Falls, and has not run in some time, as the suspension and fork are lacking. Replacement dome is a bit too large. The clock is otherwise complete and original and enamel finish quite good; height 10.5" $400-500

144-a C.1950, German, Kern & Sohne, 400-Day clock in complete, as-found condition. This clock is from a home right here in Salem and provided faithful service until it stopped in 1985. Retains original suspension, 4-ball pendulum, Deco Style black dial with brass numerals and great heavy & original dome; ht 11" $20-40

144-b C.1975, Corning, NY, a box of 24 new glass domes for 400 day clocks. You are bidding on the price of a single dome, but MUST take all 24. This is his last box. You’ll be glad to have these. Height 10" Shipping is not recommended. $5--7 each

145. C.1870, Anglo-American Parlor Clock, with a super label of "Jerome & Co., 8-Day Superior Anglo-American Clocks, for Home use & Abroad, No Movement Genuine Unless Stamped with Factory Mark [New Haven seal]" Popular English style with turned spindles up the side and a mirror behind the barrel pendulum. Lacking a carved top & 2 top finials; ht 33" $200-300

145-a C.1922, Seth Thomas, "Chime Clock No. 73" in a mahogany case. Note the two wooden quarter columns are missing from the case, but a cabinet maker is likely to have an old turning that could be quartered and glued in there. This clock uses Seth Thomas’ very best #113-A solid plate Westminster movement. Although it is running and chiming, it looks as if it could use service. Gongs are all intact & original; silvered engraved dial is also xlnt; small dials in arch for F/S and Chime/Silent. Height 13¾" Would be $600 if all there. $350-450

145-b C.1900 France, Mougin & Cie., a larger cyrstal regulator, as-found. This case is discolored and will need polishing. Retains a nice mercury pendulum, but one of the small turned nuts was replaced at some time with one that does not match. Has a fancy porcelain dial with hand painted floral wreath trim. The front glass has one corner chip, but this can be swapped to the back where it will be unnoticeable. Overall a decent 4-glass that will clean up nicely; height 12" $375-475

145-c C.1900, German, good Royal Bonn Porcelain case, now with a French time only movement, in distress. This clock ran OK until it got around to the place on the going wheel where 3 teeth have been poorly repaired, then it stopped. So I guess you are buying the case and movement parts. My best belief is that this case would have been offered by Ansonia with one of their small lever movements. The case opening is about 3 5/8" Case is cream + pink, with wear to gold highlights; ht 9" $200-300

145-d C.1875, Seth Thomas 8-day "Cottage", restored. The new dial has been cut from a roll of sheet steel and has a "dish" to it. The hands are from another make clock. Having said these things, the mahogany case is generally sound {with edge chips} and clock retains original floral tablet and a nice label; height 14½" $125-175

145-e C.1915, Seth Thomas, ‘World’ Long Drop Octagon, as-found. Note the walnut veneer is completely off the octagon, which has been stained a walnut color over the pine. Rest of the veneer is OK, with minor chips. A handy fellow could put some veneer on the top and save the clock. Has a good double wind 15-day movement and original dial [with wear and poor touch up], and pendulum. Height 32" Worth $750 if perfect. My guess $275-325

145-f C.1909, Seth Thomas "Tory", Mahogany cased mantel clock with sunburst inlay in the lower center, and 6" porcelain dial, signed [fired in], Bigelow Kennard & Co, Boston. The consignor took this clock to the repairman, and he gave it back striking at 5 past the hour and counting one short which it gave up on the next warning sequence. It has a good rack strike #48 movement, but needs to be disassembled and put back in time. The case is sound with original finish and will clean up nicely. Worth $450 when finished. Height 13½" $175-225

145-g C.1920, Sessions Clock Co., Forestville, a good mahogany tambour clock with porcelain dial. The case has been refinished and could use some more polish, but is otherwise complete and sound. Strikes the hours on a heavy wire gong; height 10" $50-80

145-h C.1905, Seth Thomas, Outside Bell, Ship’s Bell in well used, original condition. This clock was bought new from the marine supply shop on this mahogany shield {a figure 8 of original lacquer is visible when you remove the clock}. But the bonus was that the label was protected, and although it got wet from outside use, label is still intact and legible. Note the dial is almost all rubbed off due to regular use; with original key. Height of clock = 10½" Shield = 15" $300-400

145-j C.1895, French Figural clock, cast spelter. The gilding is all rubbed off the statue of "Bedtime" a mother comforting her son after reading a book. The base retains its bright gilding. Good bell strike movement is dirty, but sound and running; porcelain dial has no chips. Pottery plaques in base have been repainted. No breaks in spelter; ht 10" $100-150

145-k C.1920, German, Hamburg-American Clock Co., economy line 8-day time and strike bracket clock. This clock was made for our market, to have the look of a Regency inlaid bracket clock. In truth it is a light pine case with mahogany veneer and cross banding all around the front. The subsidiary dials on the arched, brassy painted tin dial are stamped tin and are only for looks, as are the stamped tin spandrels. Has a "H-A" crossed arrow front mount movement that is running and striking the hours on original bim-bam rods. Pendulum is replaced but works. My estimate is a guess. Height 16" $100-150

145-L C.1825, Mark Leavenworth, Waterbury, Conn, Pillar & Scroll. Are you a gambler? A local picker bought this at an estate sale a couple weeks ago and we didn’t have time to vet it thoroughly. The dial is xlnt, the tablet is new but well done, it ticks and strikes fine, but has no iron bell. The scrolls were replace maybe 75 years ago and are a bit thick, but with age, skirt is original, feet replaced. The door is cut down and adapted from a later column & splat. One finial only is a 20th C. repro. Height 32" Careful, weights are in case. Potential..? $600-900

145-m C.1915, E. Ingraham & Co, cabinet clock, as-found. The oak case retains original finish, the dial has been sprayed gold and the minute hand is incorrect. Still the movement is original and sound and this clock will clean up easily. Height 14" $75-100

145-n C.1890, German, walnut cased wall clock in the Viennese style, as- found. 3 of the finials have had their dowels broken and are just taped in place for foto. The cast mounting bracket for the movement has cracked and needs welding, and slide needs to be filed to smooth its entry into the bracket. The cello dial is all dark from oil and needs a new paper dial {put adhesive backed acetate over new paper dial and it will simulate porcelain}. Last, the pendulum bob is now a cast kitchen clock replacement. Top & finials are all old and should finish up OK. Height 39" $150-200

145-o Mixed lot: A decent Vienna long drop case {79 inches}, now with a converted American shelf clock movement, set into a new set of plates and with German suspension, leader, pendulum and pulley. And with an American dial pan and hands. Now it was a very creative mechanic that did this work and it even runs. Use as a decorator in a public office, or install old Vienna movement. Finials are all new and some dowels need refitting. Pend bob with small dent. Ht 79" $600-900

146. C.1850, Elisha Manross, Bristol, Conn, 30-Hour full size steeple in restored condition. The mahogany case has been refinished with spar varnish and is a bit shiny; dial repainted; label full but dark from stripping solution. Does have a very good Fenn tablet, and seems to run & strike fine; ht 19" $100-150

147. C.1880, Ansonia Clock Co., 30-hour Beehive as-found. The case is missing some hunks of veneer and has been stripped and poorly refinished, a rub-on trademark added to old dial; label fair. Does run and strike; height 19" $75-100

148. C.1870, Jerome & Co, [New Haven] 8-Day Bee-hive in good condition. The case was refinished some time ago and dial is a little weak. Still retains nice label and super "beehive" tablet. Seems to tick and strike. Minor edge chips in veneer; height 19" $150-200

149. C.1875, Waterbury 8-Day Steeple, restored. The case has been refinished and the hands are later, however this is a decent clock with a good label and an original tablet {now flaking} of a stone mansion. Height 19.5" $125-175

150. C.1870, New Haven Clock Co., 8-Day Beehive, with alarm as-found. This clock retains old beehive tablet [with flaking], decent label and original dial. Case was stripped long ago and never properly finished; some chips along back edge. Hands are later. Height 19" $100-125

151. C.1913, New Haven "San Martin" Mission oak shelf clock, as-found. This clock is dirty, the minute hand is broken, and pendulum replaced. Partial label on rear. 8-day; ticks + strikes. Ht 20.5" $75-100

155. C.1835, Charles Kirke, Bristol, Conn., 30-hour stencil column, now LESS splat. Having said that, it is a decent old case with original finish and the dial a bit dirty but still very good, and the label with some minor tears, but still good; height 31" $75-100

156. C.1855, Seth Thomas, Plymouth, Conn, Column and Cornice, as-found. I’ve seen this replacement cornice molding from time to time and assume it was a standard cabinet molding from around 1900. In any case, it does not have the proper outward flare that most case makers used. Dial is new, mirror replaced, case refinished. Best part is the lower tablet, which has some flakes. 8-day, weight, 33" $225-325

157. C.1845, Birge, Mallory & Co., Bristol, Conn, double deck, full column with cornice top, as-found, with tablets so flaked as to need full restoration. 158. C.1828, Bishop & Bradley, Watertown, Conn, transitional carved column and splat, as-found. First off the short drop movement is not by Bishop & Bradley. Next, the whole top, eagle & pineapple finials are new [and not to the highest standard]. New tablet was done by same novice restorer. Still from across the room, the clock has a great look and seems to run. Height 31" $350-450

159. C.1842 [dated label] Wells Forbes, Bristol, NH., 30 hour ww, with between the plates alarm, shelf clock. The door has been re-veneered and the tablet has been redone [nice subject of young girl with flowers]. Dial, hands and label are all good; includes small alarm weight; height 29" $100-150

160. Movement assembly and dial complete, for Seth Thomas Queen Anne. The dial had just been professionally restored, and the case was sent out for refinishing and disappeared. Pendulum stick broken. This is Seth Thomas’ heaviest striking movement, complete with iron bracket. $100-200

161. C.1930, a good jeweler’s work bench with drawers, similar to that in photo, except the lower right has a hinged door in lieu of a drawer. Complete with apron. Height 38" $175-275

162. C.1900, German Mini 30-Hour R-A wall clock in generally good condition. The original dial is painted on tin and is flaking in a few spots. Height 22" $175-275

166. C.1850, J. C. Brown, Forestville, Conn, 8-Day OG in fair to good original condition, except weights are new. 168-a Mixed lot: C.1890, a good pair of Eagle & Cannonball mantel garnitures, now drilled at top to accept a clock on one and an unrelated barometer on the other. A Nebraska sorghum farmer put these together and sold them to a lovely gentleman who accepted them as ‘original’. The lever clock ticks and stops, while the barometer seems to work. I just don’t know how to assess the value of these, so will try to figure their worth as parts. Heights = 15" & 18.5" $200-300

169. C.1910, Ansonia "Regulator A" in generally good condition. The walnut case has been refinished and the black bezel trim was left off. The original paper dial is discolored and with wear. Retains inside case label, and beat scale. Runs and strikes OK; height 32" $400-500

170. C.1910, Wm. L. Gilbert, "Consort" long drop pressed oak school clock, time and calendar, restored. The lower door came apart at some time and an untalented repairman glue it askew—it will need to be taken apart and reglued. Case was refinished to an attractive golden oak color and the dial repapered with proper replacement. Runs Ok; height 32" $350-450

171. C.1910, Ansonia "Regulator C", long drop, time only. This clock is one of the poplar cases that was grained and exported to England. Since returning to the US, it has been refinished to a maple color, and some sanding marks show in the wood. The pendulum is correct, however the stick is simply wedged into the bob; a $3 rating nut kit will solve this problem. See Timesaver’s number in rear of catalog; original paper dial xlnt; export hands correct; height 30½" $275-325

172. C.1900, French, Japy, Small Crystal Regulator, as-found. The case is sound and all the glass is good. The dial has some hairlines. 177. C.1930, Waltham No. 8515, Sea Serpents and frame, solid bronze. OK, so a novice took it apart to oil it {it does run}, and lost the hands, and then glued on two odd German hands, and cracked the crystal. Still the case, dial and movement are OK and worth restoring; the case is perfect—needs nothing; height 11½" Worth $600 if correct. $250-350

178. C.1890, New Haven "Chatelaine", hanging wall garniture, with 15 day double wind movement. Some one took this apart and lost a couple screws, so the bottom trim is not now attached. 212-b C.1870, E. Ingraham & Co., 8-day "Doric" in very good original condition. I thought the gilt plum tablet had been rebacked in orange, but there is no evidence it has ever been out of the door. 217. C.1920, France, Bretagne & Cie, a mini oak grandfather clock case, nicely carved with flowers and spindles at top, now with an Ansonia "Bee" type movement. I really don’t know whether this was conceived as a watch hutch, or a small case for personal belongings {front door reveals a small cabinet}, or a child’s toy. But it is well made and certain to be of interest; height 13 ½" $150-250

218. C.1930, English "Enfield" Grandmother clock, oak case with original dark oak finish. This clock runs and has a great sound, but the pendulum bob got lost [leader and suspension are there]. Clock retains all 8 original steel rods and belts out Westminster tune with pleasant authority; height 50" $200-300

219. C.1915, Seth Thomas "Globe" long drop school clock in very good original condition. The mahogany case retains original finish with mild crazing and will need your choice of rubbing compound or "rejuvenator" {small scratches by bezel latch} The original painted dial is tan with nicotine and soot, + scratches around the winding hole. Retains good beat scale, pendulum and movement, and in good running order. If you like the "as-found" look, you will like this; 8-day time. Ht 32" $350-450

220. C.1930, Gilbert, "Hollywood" wall clock in mahogany with original finish. The case with minor nicks and scrapes, but still sound. This seems to be an economy version, with a little painted arch at top {original}, in lieu of the little cast flowers that are normally there. 8-day time and strike on bim-bam rod assembly with neat tone. Good beginner’s clock. Height 22.5" $175-225

221. C.1915, Seth Thomas, Chime Clock No. 55, Sonora Chime clock on 4 bells [Westminster sequence], as-found. This clock was taken to a repairman for restoration, and needs some additional work. The case was stripped and varnished, and needs to be steel wooled and a final coat applied. The dial is a bit tarnished and should be silvered. The bells have been installed in the incorrect sequence, so it chimes, but nothing recognizable. Style numbers 55 and 00 are the smallest cases into which Seth Thomas squeezed their Sonora movements. Needs TLC, but fully restorable. Height 9½" $275-325

Aside from this minor problem, the clock is excellent with a good paper dial. Ht 7" $60-90

224. C.1893, a Waterbury incised walnut ginger-bread case on which the top 5" was broken away, and someone found another case and carefully fit that top to this one; retains original Waterbury movement, dial, and alarm. Runs. Height 23" $75-100

225. Mixed Lot: C.1891, Ingraham "World" incised oak kitchen clock [nice case], NOW with an Ansonia 8-day kitchen movement and dial, and an old barrel pendulum from another Ansonia. These are some decent parts, or enjoy the clock as is; height 22½" $60-90?

226. A lot of three [3] Swiss travel clocks C.1920, two with alarms; all 3 tick when wound, which is a bonus. These are 8-day models with jeweled movements in above average condition, cases intact, but as-found; ht 4.5" One bid for all 3 $30-60

227. Mixed lot, a C.1870 30 hour spring movement, now in a home-made acorn case that is a bit fragile. Does have decent lines, and looks good from 10 feet away. I have difficulty estimating things like this; height 24" $100-200

Label stained but still legible; no weights nor pendulum; movement OK; ht 32" $80-100

231. C.1839 [dated label], Daniel Pratt, Reading, Mass, 30 hour WW, column & splat, as-found. This case was stripped and refinished to a red walnut color; mirror cracked; the dial has had the black touched up [poorly, but the floral part is fine]. Top caps are incorrect, and replaced splat is cut from a piece of solid mahogany; dial assembly is too thick and door will not close properly. For parts? Retains super Pratt label. Height 32" $75-100

232. C.1920, German, Westminster Box clock in oak with 5 panes of shaped beveled glass in leaded frame. Has 8 rod gong set, all rods intact. The case is missing the top pressed trim, pendulum is dirty, but clock is complete and sound; height 29" $125-175

235. C.1925, French Westminster box clock, 2-tune [shift lever above one, behind dial]. Note interesting bell shaped bevel glass; height 26" $100-150

241-a Mixed lot: a C.1850 Wm L. Gilbert, Winchester, Conn., hollow column case {unusual label}, now with a C.1880 New Haven OG movement, new dial, beveled mirror in base, and a newly painted tablet of New Wellington College, Sandhurst, England. This clock recently returned to the US from England, and it is possible that William Gilbert made the original export arrangements, hence his label, as these cases are usually associated with Clark & Gilbert. But the most unusual feature of this case is the profuse Dutch style marquetry, everywhere – cornice, columns, door sides, plinth, done in England to match someone’s furniture. So what should we do with it now? Ht 29" $300-400

241-b C.1870, Seth Thomas, Column & Cornice, 2-weight, eight day, with restorations. The case has been refinished, as have the columns, formerly shell pattern, now a yellow striped pattern. The tablets are both new, original dial with flakes. Still retains a mint label and is worthy of final restorations. Height 32" $250-350

241-c C.1840, Henry C. Smith, Plymouth Hollow, Conn, wooden works OG, as-found condition, with another make long drop movement [complete and sound] married into the case, and needs to be fit a little better {pins don’t line up with holes in uprights} Label has a jagged tear through the center, but its all there. The wooden dial with horizontal crack, but not all the way through, and some flaking. I took the movement out and both trains work. Hands don’t match and don’t fit either. Ht 25" $75-100

241-d Mixed lot: a C.1925 Seth Thomas "Lyre" wall case of gilded spelter, now with a C.1950, Smith’s English lever fit-up movement in good running order. The work has been very well done, and the gilt wood adapter has a good 50 years of age on it. Clock is in good running order. Although a marriage, I would say it made a more reliable clock. Height 21¼" $90-120

241-e C.1895. F. Kroeber, NY, a black enameled iron clock in poor, as-found condition. Well, it has a decent dial and the springs are ok, it even still ticks. But the case has been wet and is rusty, feet with corrosion, and two vacant holes at top reveal a missing statue. So there you have it; use for parts or restore; height 10" $60-90

241-f C.1865, Seth Thomas, Thomaston, label and early 8-day lyre movement marked "Plymouth" {original}, gilt column and cornice, as-found. I had to wash this whole clock down with windex just to see what was there. Basically you get a case {with missing bits}, movement, a set of square weights for a 30-hour, no hands, no pend, orig flaked dial and a flaking floral tablet. Height 32" $175-225

241-g C.1880, French, Picture Frame clock, in poor unrestored condition. This clock fell off the wall and someone tried to repair it by using a piece of chip board behind the frame; the gilt trim in photo is the result of a home-made stencil. Movement and white enamel dial look OK; no pendulum; no outer glass; general distress! Height 19" $100-150

241-h C.1870, Seth Thomas 8-day OG, as-found, less weights and pendulum. This clock has a decent original dial and a good label; floral tablet is flaking, but at least you can see what was there originally. Very bottom veneer band is destressed. Very restorable. Height 28.5" $100-150

241-j C.1890, French Figural clock of David, as-found, no pendulum, no minute hand, no bell nor bell standard – rest of movement looks OK and fancy porcelain dial is perfect. Someone has sprayed the entire clock with black enamel. The figure of David is undamaged and with fine detail; height 16" $100-150

241-k C.1900, Ansonia "Ossipee" Porcelain china in dark pink, as-found. This clock has an open escapement movement. The clock took a tumble resulting in a small chip in the dial at 12, and broke the crest of the case which has been glued, filled and painted to match. This clock runs fine and the movement is clean. It is really difficult to estimate some of these clocks with minor damage that still function OK as general line timekeepers. Height 11.5" $150-200

241-L C.1910, E. Ingraham & Co., Pressed Oak "World", as-found. The top tips are incorrectly replaced with pine [can be easily re-done]. Has a good Ingraham 8-day T/S/Alarm movement, but someone has installed a dial from a Gilbert gingerbread. A $2 paper dial will cure this. Runs and strikes. Estimate reflects needed work; height 23" $75-100

242. C.1900, French, Spelter Figural Clock, 8-day time and strike on a bell, and on a black lacquered base, less dome. This is a religious motif, a cast book above the clock with the title "Evangel St. Jean", and beside, a young man in robes, carrying a bible and pointing his index finger skyward. The altar behind the book is broken away and absent. The gilding is still decent, and movement is xlnt and runs; porcelain dial OK. Height with base 12.5" $75-100

243. Mixed Lot: a C.1890, Seth Thomas #30 walnut wall case [less bottom] now with a C.1920 quality Waltham movement, dial and hands. And a new pendulum keystone and stick with a Chelsea pendulum bob [with dents]. No weight, but great parts. Height {as shown} 43" Lets be fair, the movement is worth $250 minimum and the case is probably still worth $350 [would be $1500 complete]. $400-600

244. C.1900, German, a long d
