251. C.1915, Waterbury Clock Co., from their "French Silver" series, Art Nouveau ladies boudoir clock, cast of white metal and with heavy silver plating. 251-a C.1883, Terry Clock Co., Pittsfield, Mass, "Pert" in original case by Lovell Mfg, Erie, PA [made wringers and clock cases], fancy "Good Luck" alarm in very good original condition. Moreover, has original signed Kroeber key. [Key at podium] The original finish has a nice dark walnut color with some crazing. Height 18" $300-400

The embossed and silvered dial is bright and with no tarnish, and with fast/slow and chime/silent dials in the arch. Beveled glass in door; with original key and pendulum; ht 13.25" $300-400

252-b C.1881, Waterbury Walnut Gingerbread Clock, similar in character to those they show named after cities. This is a great walnut in excellent original condition, with neat factory design doweled & removable crest [top 4"], and with original finish with nice soft craze patina. The dial has started to flake [about 5%], but this clock is otherwise excellent; partial rear label; 8-day, T/S/Alarm. Height 23" $125-175

252-c C.1925, Waltham Clock Co., Deco Style, 8-Day desk clock in clean condition. One of the small case screws is missing in the rear, and I could only get it to run for 2 days, so assume it might need oiling/service. Height 14" $275-375

254-b C.1925, Waltham Clock Co., "Partner’s Clock" in excellent original condition. Modest wear on the gilding, but the glass and dials are still good and the clock is in good running order. Height 4" $250-350

Note: Atmos production dates are discussed in detail in the August, 1990, Bulletin of the NAWCC.

255-a C.1958, Swiss, LeCoultre, "Atmos" clock, serial number 95194, Calibre #526-5, in a brass case, now void of gilding due to polishing.. This is a nice, small unit with swinging front door. It appears complete and sound, however someone has bent the impulse arm, and I could not get it stay running. Height 8¾" $275-375

255-b C.1972, Swiss, LeCoultre, "Atmos" clock, serial number 384923, Calibre #528-8, in a gilded brass case, and in "like-new" condition. This model has the lift out front door. All models with doors are safer that the lift top, owing to the danger of breaking off the minute shaft when setting down the top. Height 9.25" $375-475

256. ***C.1966, Swiss, LeCoultre, "Atmos" clock, serial number 206493, Calibre #528-8, in a gilded brass case with lift out front door. Clock appears to be intact and ran OK for the photograph. Looks to be well cared for. For the newcomers, these clocks are wound automatically by changes in atmospheric pressure, and are still sold in better department stores. Height 9.25" $350-450

256-a. C.1961, Swiss, LeCoultre, "Atmos" clock, serial number 135759, Calibre #528-6, in a gilded brass case with lift off cover. Note that one of the friction pins that holds on the cover has been lost, and there is a screw in its place. These pins are available from LeCoultre. Otherwise, this is a relatively clean clock and with original green carry box {less buckle}; height 9.25" $300-400

256-b C.1925, New Haven "Waring", full size banjo in excellent original condition. Has great "Carriage" tablets in blue, black and silver. Silvered dial; strikes on a single steel rod. Height 37" $275-375

256-c C.1881, Waterbury "Regent-Calendar" in outstanding original condition. This clock is veneered in attractive rosewood, and retains original dial, tablet, pendulum and ‘papered’ back. Waterbury was among the first to offer the long drop octagon, but they used a light pine case, veneered, and very few have survived in good condition. This clock is the exception, and anyone would be proud to own it; h t 32" $400-600

257. C.1900, French Conical [rotary] Pendulum Annular dial alarm clock, with engraved and embossed case. Compare this with lot 475 in Oct ’98 sale, which had a smooth brass case. This one looks to have been for the Middle Eastern market, as it had brightly colored enamel [now worn] in the engraved loops and circles. Retains original ball pendulum. Wind and set alarm from base. These are unusual; see Tardy, page 351. Note 2 of the pillars are slightly bent, but still good-plus condition. Height 6.75" $600-800

258. C.1959, Horolovar Co., New York, reproduction, of the famous "Ignatz" flying Pendulum clock. This clock shows signs of use, and the oil in the movement has dried out, so it runs sluggishly. However, it is complete with original box, instructions and guarantee; very good condition. These seem to bring around $200 on Ebay. Height 10" $150-200

258-a C.1920, Seth Thomas "12 Inch Drop", in oak and in very good original condition. The only thing that keeps this from being outstanding is the flaking dial which has about 15% loss at this time. This clock is ready to hang on the wall and enjoy. 8-day time only. Height 24" $250-350

259. C.1900, E. N. Welch, pressed oak Gingerbread clock with original finish, dial, tablet and pendulum. The paper dial is dark with age, and the finish is crazed and dark from dirt. I personally like the "100 year old" look, but I’m sure someone will want to strip this down to golden oak. Ht 23.5" $100-200

259-a C.1915, Waterbury "Pelican" in absolutely LIKE NEW condition, with original finish, both rear labels intact, original tablets; super dial with no stains; beat scale, pendulum and even original Waterbury key. 259-b C.1929, Wm. L. Gilbert, Winsted, Conn, mini Pillar & Scroll in good original condition. This was part of their reissue series and uses the same movement as their model 6700, small solid plate movement with rack and snail striking on "Gold-tone" gong. The gong has had some pliers on it and there are minor scrapes on the dial, but this is a one-owner and retains original pendulum and key. Cute clock; height 13" $300-400

259-c C.1925, Ingraham "Nyanza", banjo, time only, in like new condition. This is a one family clock from Haverhill, Mass, and if you are looking for a near perfect Nyanza, with full original label, and perfect original paper dial, then this is the one! 39" $300-400

Height 11" $175-225

262-b C.1930, Seth Thomas "Office No. 14" in oak and in excellent original condition in every respect. Original golden oak finish; good 14" painted dial [with minor chip around winding hole], good 30-day movement and in running order. Ready to enjoy; diameter = 18" $375-475

262-c C.1852, E. O. Goodwin, Bristol, Conn, Miniature Column & Cornice in very good condition. The case is in excellent condition with original orange peel finish and just the right patina on good veneer {minor chip by top door hinge}. Goodwin used movements from Brewster & Ingraham and this one is appropriately signed, and running well [8-day time and strike]. Very good, complete label. Tablets are all original: dial tablet with flaking corners; the middle tablet {Smithsonian} has the building over 1/3 flaked, and the bottom tablet of the Crystal Palace has had touch up in the dome, and other flaking. The dial has been professionally repainted on orig dial pan. A hard to find clock; ht 20" $400-600

265-c C.1895, New Haven "Indicator" wall clock in excellent original condition. New Haven first introduced this model in 1881 as the Regulator, Drop, Round. Later catalogs show the name change to Indicator, and the revised tablet. The only thing that keeps this from being called outstanding, is a ¾" acorn missing from the right carved leaf. The suspension wire broke in transit and will need to be renewed; has old repair to pend stick. With old service labels from Norwood, MA. Very nice clock; height 31" $600-800

266. C.1900, French, Brass Cased Carriage Clock, time and strike in good original condition. There is some minor wear through the gilding on the edges, and the clock could stand cleaning. There is a simple wooden "cap" missing from the top trim on each side, and a simple facet cap from the top center [see Gilbert catalog]. This clock is otherwise nearly perfect, with original dial, tablet, finish & label. Mitra is the Hindu God of Justice, and this is known to be a scarce model. Mr. Lowe bought this clock from Bob Stangl in 1991 for $525, and we know Bob is fussy about condition! Height 22" $400-600

270. C.1850, Label of J.C. Brown, Forestville Mfg. Co, and with original dial signature of : Conn Clock Co, and underneath: Polished Pinions No. 1. There is minor touch-up to the gilding on the door frames, but this clock is otherwise excellent+. Well colored rosewood veneer. Height 16" $300-400

274. C.1842, E. C. Brewster & Co, Bristol, Conn, 30-Hour, Kirk’s Patent, spring driven clock, in a nice round band and cornice case. See picture of same model in Ken Robert’s book on Ives, page 219. Note many people mistake this for an 8-day because of the location of the winding holes, and the weight of the clock with the iron back plate. The 8-day has the 'scape wheel at front center of the movement, and of course you can feel the difference in the springs on winding. This clock has a nice card label and original dial; the case is attractively refinished; clean and ready to enjoy; special note: do not confuse the first E.C. Brewster & Co {1839-43} with the later {1861} E.C. Brewster & Co. Height 21" $350-550

We phoned Snowden Taylor for help in dating this clock, and he assures us it is in the same time period as the previous {Brewster} lot. Bubble in the veneer on right side of case. Height 23" $500-600

274-b C.1845, Chauncey Jerome, 8-day Fusee, Ripple edge, Octagon drop, rosewood, in excellent condition. The original dial has been touched up around the winding holes, center hole and a few other spots, but is generally xlnt. The movement is properly signed and clean and in good working order. Jerome was very creative with these short drops, and hardly two are exactly the same; on this one is the entire front dial and bezel assembly is hinged at the top and latched on the sides; simply remove hands and tilt up for total access. Height 24" $750-1000

274-c C.1863, Atkins Clock Co, Bristol, Flat Column, Empire style case with unusual door latch bearing patent info for "Adlams"; don’t know if he was a case designer or what. 276. C.1890, Boston Clock Co., "Pattern No.451" onyx mantel clock with gilt bronze ornamentation. Wish you catalog guys would get together, as I had to go clear back to Ehrhardt book 1, page 79 to find this model. In any case, this clock is from a home in Fall River, a one-owner and is in exceptional condition; minor wear to gilding on bronze; vertical stress crack shows in base but does not detract; no chips. Still runs and strikes on a cathedral gong; ht 17" $500-700

276-a C.1900, English, "Royal Lorne" Porcelain China clock in very good original condition. The only thing that keeps this from being excellent is the rear cover came off its hinge and is now inside the case. The basic case is a dark cream color. The flowers are yellow and dark red, and with gold highlights. The movement is signed by British United Clock Co., Birmingham, England, and is a close copy of Ansonia’s movement. 282. C.1897, A Gilbert {Royal Hanover} Cobalt Blue case, No.410, now with an Ansonia open ‘scape movement. This is not an obvious marriage and took me a while to track down. If you can live with it, it’s about the best looking cobalt china of the bunch. The case is perfect with no chips nor cracks and the flowers have extra nice detail. The oil on the movement appears a little gummy, but it still runs and strikes fine; height 11" $400-500

285. C.1900, Ansonia "Potomac" Porcelain China clock in green with magenta and yellow roses. This clock is all original except for the paper chapter ring which appears to have been changed some time ago with an appropriate style; gilt center and hands are original; height 12" $350-450

286. C.1900, Ansonia "Tilbury" Porcelain case now with a C.1894 round movement from an Ansonia marble mantle clock: see Ly’s illustrations for Providence, Oakwood, and Zampa for this fancy dial with arabic numerals, each in a gilt oval, and the front ‘scape pivot held up by a cast floral support. I tried to put the porcelains with no problems on this page, but some were not obvious until I took a second look inside. All this aside, this is a good looking dark pink case with no chips nor repairs, and can still be enjoyed; ht 9.75" $275-375

287. C.1905, Ansonia "La Mine" Royal Bonn China clock in excellent original condition. This case has fabulous purple and yellow iris on the front and is shaded light lime at top to dark green at bottom. 288. C.1900, French, Porcelain China Clock, light blue with 24K floral patterns on the side, and with a country scene below the dial. The dial is hand painted with a bouquet of wild flowers, and with bronze mounts, left right and top. Height 10" $400-600

289. C.1918, Warren Clock Co., Ashland, Mass, hard to find early battery clock with patent Warren "Free Pendulum" with no visible means of driving the movement. Except for the fact that the suspension spring was broken in transit, this clock is in exceptional condition, with perfect dial, hands, dome and good gilt finish on brass parts. See Palmer’s Treasury of American Clocks, fig 546 for more details. Height 11.5" $500-800

290. C.1910, Ansonia Cock Co., "Regulator A", time and calendar in a walnut case and in excellent original condition. The back paper lining has some tears, and minor abrasion along case edge, but a great original dial, tablet and label; height 32" $550-650

291. C.1914, Ansonia "La Savoie", Royal Bonn China clock in excellent original condition. Retains original paper dial with gilt brass center; dial is perfect. Not the fanciest Bonn case, but perfect for the beginning porcelain collector; runs; height 11¼ " $400-600

292. C.1900, Ansonia "La Plaine", Royal Bonn China clock in excellent original condition. Retains original paper dial with gilt brass center, and minor wear between the 4 & 5. The movement is clean and going. Height 12" $450-650

293. C.1960, Chelsea Clock Co., Chelsea, Mass, the "Claremont", bronze base and ball desk set. Although not an antique, this is a desirable and well made office clock for anyone with marine interests; original key. Height 8.5" $750-1000

294. C.1836, Silas B. Terry, Horologist, Plymouth, Conn. This is a wonderful column and carved splat with the rarest of all S.B.Terry labels, in addition to his name, stating: Horologist - Clocks, Time Pieces & Regulators, Plymouth, Conn. Uses his round skeletonized 8-day movement, with ‘scape wheel visible through dial hole. A great wooden dial with gilt chapters and corners and beading around the inner circle as well as the outer; minor flaking. Sadly the tablet had a weight fall through it; none is missing and it is a great mansion painting [Monticello?], however the cracks are clearly visible. The deeply carved pineapple splat has wonderful detail. Height 38" $1200-1600

295. C.1900, Ansonia "Bagdad", 30-Day Timepiece in very good condition, the oak case nicely refinished to a golden color. The clock uses Ansonia’s double spring month going movement, and is in good running order. Original bob with no dents, good beat scale, and good paper dial with second bit. This clock and the next lot will be hard to choose between; height 50.5" $750-1000

296. C.1900, Ansonia "Bagdad", 8-Day, striking wall regulator in excellent original condition, with nice original medium brown finish with orange peel and crazing. The only shortcoming are a couple of dents in the pendulum bob; the rest of the clock is very nice; height 50.5" $750-1000

297. C.1890, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 2" in oak and in good original condition. The original dial has some flaking by the 5 + 7, and old touch-up by 12, but in very good. The case retains its original finish, now medium to dark brown with age; bezel is solid oak variety so will never peel. The weight and bob have minor oxidation and have never been polished; and with about ¾ of label remaining; height 35.5" $900-1200

298. C.1920, Ansonia "Standard Regulator" in oak in nice condition. The case was refinished some time ago to a golden color. The paper over zinc dial is original, with some stains around the winding hole. The hands, weight, pulley, pendulum and hardware all original and this is a good example of this model; ht 37" $800-1000

299. C.1875 [dated], Ithaca "No. 4 Hanging Office" in very good condition. There are some minor touch ups to original finish on the rosewood case, and the dial is abraded in the 6-7-8 area, and [very minor], needs new suspension wire. Retains good interior label, good calendar dial and fine 30 day double spring nickel plated movement. See Ly’s Calendar book, page 136 for illustration of movements; height 28" $800-1000

300. C.1887, E. Ingraham & Co., "Ionic Calendar" in very good condition, and with presentation. The only thing that keeps this from being excellent is that someone started to wire wool the outer rosewood veneer. Fortunately they stopped after wooling down the bottom section and they NEVER touched the wonderful rosewood grained bezels. The dials are original & xlnt and a superior inside label; lower dial with original inscription: Presented Jan 1st 1887, D. Sutton & Sons, Jewelers. Height 29.5" $900-1200

301. C.1909, Seth Thomas "Umbria" in oak, 15-Day Timepiece in excellent restored condition. There is a minor water stain on the dial at 4. 302. C.1914, Seth Thomas, "Chime Clock No. 214" 8-bell, giving your choice of Whittington or Westminster on a set of deep toned cup bells. This clock has been restored, the mahogany case nicely refinished. I had trouble getting the key in over the chime arbor [a common dial/alignment problem when the movements are reinstalled], but will wind and does play beautifully. Height 14.5" $700-900

302-a C.1915, Seth Thomas, "Chime Clock No. 264" 8-bell, giving your choice of Whittington or Westminster on a set of deep toned cup bells. Note this case differs from the above with fancy inlay on front panel. This clock is a one owner from Pennsylvania, and is in exceptional original condition. No apologies; ht 14.5" $900-1200

303. C.1894, Ansonia "Symbol Extra", large crystal regulator in very good restored condition. The only thing that keeps this from being excellent is the stamped brass base has stress cracks [from lack of annealing on manufacture], and these cracks have been repaired with solder from the rear. If you check the Ansonia catalog, you’ll see this clock is the basis for the Excelsior… an expensive model with added castings and columns. This clock has been nicely silvered, top to bottom and is quite attractive; some discolored silver needs polishing. Beveled glass is good; careful on handling as glass is a bit loose; height 15.5" $650-850

304. C.1900, Ansonia "Excelsior" in wonderful as-found condition.. This clock came from a home near Portsmouth and has been untouched for a hundred years. The silver has oxidation, and there are decades of dirt and patina on this. Nothing is broken and the clock has never been abused. If you like the "antique" look of things, this is a great American item for you. Height 20½" $1500-2000

305. C.1870, Ansonia Brass & Copper Co., Empire style, 8-day weight, time and strike shelf clock in good condition with original tablet, hands and dial. 306. C.1870, Ansonia Brass & Copper Co., Empire style, 8-day weight, time, strike and calendar shelf clock in restored condition. The case has been refinished and the veneer on top of door is new; tablet is new. However, the dial, hands and label are original and excellent [including Terry patent information on both dial and label]; note top left molding has been hit and is missing a thumbnail piece of veneer; ht 33" $600-800

306-a C.1870, Ansonia Brass & Copper Co., "Drop Extra Calendar" with Terry’s patent calendar. Note on this and previous 2 lots, the month disc rides on the center shaft, as does the calendar hand itself; see Ly’s Calendar Book, pages 18-21 for details. The patent info is about rubbed off this dial, BUT other than that, this is the nicest one of these I’ve seen in years, an outstanding example in 100% original condition; height 26" $750-1000

307. C.1845, Birge, Mallory & Co., Bristol, Conn, mini triple deck with Ives 30-hour strap brass movement. This clock is a bit over-restored, as the case has been totally disassembled and all pine surfaces sanded so they look new [but are old]. The plaster splat at top is new [but a good casting and nicely gilded]. Tablets are both new and properly done with New England mansions. The dial is original, hands are period, label OK. All gilding and faux tortoise-shell is nicely re-done. Ht 26.5" $800-1200

308. C.1830, Eli Terry & Sons, Plymouth, Conn, 8-Day double deck shelf clock with mahogany plate wooden movement. This clock retains a superb dial, wonderfully carved eagle and paw feet, and full label with the equation of time variance shown for the full year. The tablet has been reblacked behind the original stencil, and the mansion scene has been restored [nice job]. The two weights have had a mold made and been re-cast for this clock. Height 36.5" $1250-1750

309. C.1830, Jeromes & Darrow. Bristol, Conn, 8-Day carved column and splat. This is a very large case with well detailed columns and a fruit basket top. Center of door with old mirror, lower section new mirror. Movement is original to the case, but has been worked on, and has a poor bushing on the time great arbor. The old dial is very colorful with red floral wreath in the center. There is a curious small plugged hole near the numeral 1, plus a winding scar around it, but the dial has never been redrilled for another mov’t. The label is dark, but legible; extra fancy pendulum bob, curious brass hands have age to them; don’t lose the giant weights; height 40" $600-800

310. C.1890, French, Chas. Hour, Paperweight clock with 15 jewel 8-day stem-wind movement, clean and in good running order. The silvered dial with Arabic numerals and a seconds bit at 6. Nice example; diameter = 2.8", height 4" $400-600

311. C.1890, Swiss, for Bigelow Kennard & Co., Boston, paperweight clock with 15 jewel 8-day stem-wind movement. Clean and in running order. With a perfect porcelain dial and counter sunk seconds at 6. Diameter = 2.3", ht 3.5" $350-450

313. C.1884, Ithaca "Granger" Perpetual Double Dial calendar clock in excellent original condition; minor wear around winding holes and minor scrapes on case, but still overall excellent. Walnut case retains original finish and the dial mask is bright and sharp. Height 25" $600-900

314. C.1880, French, in the style of 1750, [Vernis Martin], hand painted over lime green, mantel clock. This clock came from a home in Glasgow and the Marti movement was recently cleaned professionally. The quality of the painted decoration is superb: on the front a man seated in front of his country cottage, wife standing and with a small long haired dog, the sides and back with floral sprays. The ormolu mounts are a bit dark from 100 years of dirt, and would brighten up if cleaned in solution [don’t rub]..or enjoy the patina as-is. 8-day striking on a coiled flat wire gong; finely tooled and gilded hands. Height 15.5" $1400-1800

315. C.1976, E. Howard & Co., Boston, reissue of the famous "Regulator No. 10", figure 8 wall clock in walnut. This clock is serial number 493 of the first 500 reserved for NAWCC members, and is in like new condition. Serial numbers on case, movement and dial back all match; a well made clock. The old ones sell for around $4500. Height 34" $1200-1600

316. C.1978, E. Howard & Co., Boston, "Regulator No. 59" {reissue}. This well made clock, although not old, exhibits all the good qualities of Howard workmanship, well finished walnut case with tiger maple baffle in center, the serial No. 53 on the case and repeated on the rear of the dial. The movement is signed: E Howard & Co., and beneath "59" [model #]. Note weight is bolted to rear of case with factory mounting, and will be removed for shipment. Height 46" $1000-1500

317. C.1899, E. Howard & Co., "Model No. 95" presentation banjo, [early model] with much of the gilding improperly restored with gold paint. However, the original dial, hands, tablets, pendulum, etc. are quite wonderful, and the tablet with country scene, a herder with staff herding 5 cows along a dirt path. Overall very good condition despite the marginal gilding. Movement signed E. Howard & Co., Boston, and mounts from the rear with a single screw. See Howard catalog for illustration of this model and note changes after 1920. Ht 40" $1400-1800

317-a C.1925, E. Howard & Co., Boston, "Banjo Model 95" in excellent original condition. As many of you know, Howard was not prepared for the renewed interest in traditional banjos during the roaring 20’s. Since Waltham’s case shop had extra capacity to produce these models, a contract was born whereby Howard provided the movement, mounting plates and pendulum, and Waltham shipped back a finished clock, with their own artists signature of E. Howard & Co., Boston, on the dial. We’ve compared this clock with other Waltham cases on hand and the construction is identical. It is noteworthy that Howard supplied mounting plates, similar in concept to Waltham’s, to which the movement is screwed through holes in the front plate. I feel this clock is original in every respect and an excellent example of this later "95". Wash./Mt. Vernon tablets. Height 40" $1750-2250

318. C.1880, English {probably Smith & Sons}, a large and well made 2-fusee, pendulum regulated lantern clock, in the style of 1675. The dial is nicely engraved and with the inscription: "Daniel Quare, Londini Fecit". Access to the movement is gained from both sides and the rear by heavy brass door with turn latches, said doors and all trim nicely engraved with "Knight" theme. The minute hand has a solder repair at the hub. Robust 2-fusee movement runs and strikes on the large bell overhead. Height 14.5" $1600-1800

319. C.1890, E. Howard & Co., Boston, "Regulator No. 70" in oak, clean and running. This case has lively grain and was refinished some time ago and has a pleasant patina and medium caramel color. The tablet and damascene bob are original, as is the dial, on which the signature is mostly rubbed off [but you can still make it out]. Retains original iron weight with #70 cast in. Overall excellent; height 31" $1250-1500

320. C.1835, "Salem Bridge" shelf clock with double deck Empire case by Spencer, Hotchkiss & Co., Salem Bridge, Conn. This is a very nice case with carving beside center mirror section and a bold cornice top. Case retains original gilt and tortoise shell columns [careful one is loose]. Lower glass is an acceptable repaint, but the border is a bit narrow and the house too small. The dial has been professionally repainted/gilded copying the original. Using earlier style "Salem Bridge" 8-day movement [square plate cut outs], mounted to a seat board. Height 31" $1250-1750

320-a C.1885, E. Ingraham & Co., "Parlor Calendar", with patent B.B Lewis perpetual calendar mechanism. This clock is in excellent condition, the top dial professionally re-papered. The tail to the red "day" hand has broken off and is taped to the glass. Otherwise an xlnt clock with all case parts intact; 8-day time and strike; height 21.5" $1000-1500

321. C.1896, Gilbert "Oriental" Calendar, with T. McCabe patent calendar mechanism, showing day, date and month through 3 orifice in the front tablet. This clock is above average. Retains full bright label inside case, however calendar instructions are missing. Otherwise the discs are original as are the tablet and dial. The walnut case has been nicely refinished. Height 27" $1250-1500

322. C.1860, Austrian, 1-Weight Vienna Regulator, late Biedermeier, with one piece porcelain dial and center sweep seconds. The case has some holes from dead wood worm [no active dust apparent], but is otherwise intact with original finish. The top crest for the case has been made by a good cabinet maker to match the rest of the case and he has done a nice job. The weight driving through a delicate 4-spoke pulley; old bone handled crank. 8-day duration. Height 44" $1500-2000

323. C.1910, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 2" in mahogany in very good original condition. This clock hung in the sun and the finish has faded unevenly, however it is still a good looking clock. Retains near perfect original dial and hands; original lacquer on pendulum and beat scale. This clock is running and ready to enjoy. Height 36" $1000-1500

324. C.1910, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 2" in mahogany in excellent original condition. This clock is the sister to lot 323 and even nicer condition. Retains near perfect original dial; original lacquer on pendulum and beat scale. Running; ht 36" $1000-1500

325. C.1890, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 2" in oak, in very good condition. The case was refinished to a golden oak color; note lively grain in solid oak bezel. Retains original dial, pendulum, hands and all hardware. The bezel has a couple of fine dry splits from winter dryness. Running. Ht 36" $900-1200

325-a C.1870, Welch, Spring & Co., "Italian" model shelf calendar with B. B. Lewis perpetual calendar mechanism in good order. This clock retains a super Welch label on the inside, back, and an xlnt Lewis label on the calendar cover. The only shortcoming is that someone went over the days on the top dial with a magic marker. In any case, except for the top dial, this is a very good example of the Italian model. Height 20" $600-800

326. C.1859, Burwell & Carter, Italian Type Rosewood shelf calendar, 8-day. This was the first production clock with the B.B.Lewis perpetual calendar, using the "O" type mechanism, except that the gears are in reverse order, and the assembly is mounted to the rear pan, rather than the dial. The case was designed and patented by Noah L. Brewster, son of Elisha. Note the top bezel in this design is brass, while the calendar bezel is wood. The case was refinished some time ago; has a good label and excellent original paper dials [top dial is going dark]. Height 18" $750-1000

327. C.1862, Seth Thomas "Peanut" or Office Calendar No. 3. This clock is overall very good plus. There are a couple of veneer chips in the lower bezel and these have been inked in and the whole case varnished over [decent job, though sides need to be wire wooled down]. The dials were professionally restored some time ago and have a good crazed look to them. Clock retain original Mix Bros lower movement +rollers and proper upper movement and a near mint label inside. Note this clock is ½ inch longer than published figures, and has "flat" rather than curved edge to the door, and I believe these are the very earliest ones produced. Height 24.5" $2000-3000

328. C.1831, Rodney Brace, North Bridgewater, Mass., Miniature Empire style shelf clock. See A Treasury of American Clocks by Brooks Palmer, page 79 for photo of a sister to this clock. Label has instructions to the purchaser and includes the Census of the United States for 1830. The label has some vertical wear from weight rub, but is quite legible. Palmer’s clock shows gilt columns, while these have always been mahogany, with unusual tiger stripe. This clock has a great original dial with floral corners and wreath around the center, and with gilt highlights. Torrington movement is in running order. Ex Fraser Forgie collection; height 23" $750-1000

329. C.1840, Smith, Tuttle & Blakesley, Owego, Tioga County, Y.N. {note mis-spelled Oswego and YN instead of NY on good label}. A nice short case quarter column and splat in good condition. The splat itself is a multi-layer affair, and has dished in at the center and out on the edges a bit. Turned spindle feet are original. Someone has razored an oval in the mirror {old but not original} to view the pendulum. An interesting NY piece; height 29.5" $800-1200

330. C.1872, Welch, Spring & Co. "Audran, B.W." double dial perpetual calendar clock in walnut. This is an exceptional clock in excellent condition. Was refinished some time ago and has a pleasant patina, a nice medium brown walnut. The original upper dial with minor wear and the lower mechanism has a dial + Lewis label that is like new. In mid-February ’99, one of these sold on Ebay for $3700. See Horology Americana, page 198 for more details on this model. Height 31.5" $2000-3000

331. C.1875, Southern Calendar Clock Co., St. Louis, MO, "Fashion No. 3". The finials are replacements and a little loose [but look decent]; rest of clock is in good shape; the original dial pans with original crazed paint have been carefully re-stenciled by Smallwood’s [difficult to tell from original]; original Fashion tablet in good condition and a nice interior label. Seth Thomas produced the quality movements in Fashion models 1-8. Note original rollers are dark with age and the day roller with some flaking. Overall very good. Height 32" $1500-1800

332. C.1875, Ithaca Calendar Clock Co., Ithaca, New York, the "Director" model double dial perpetual calendar. The walnut case was refinished some time ago, and the base molding was broken in two and reglued. The dials are original and excellent, and case retains original carved top. This model does not turn up that often and this example is generally good+, with time, strike and alarm. Original rear dust cover. Height 31" $1200-1500

333. C.1880, Ithaca Calendar Clock Co., Ithaca, New York, "No. 6, Hanging Library". This is a rare model and has some restorations: the case has been refinished and is quite dull; top bezel is an aluminum replacement, painted gold; paper dial and hands replaced, calendar hand tail is missing and rear dust cover is replaced. The original rollers are quite dark and difficult to read. Note the little bow-tie is original [this is most often replaced]. A dedicated workman can easily make appropriate improvements to this clock; height 33" $900-1200

334. C.1876, Seth Thomas "Office Calendar No. 2" in rosewood, and in excellent restored condition. The dials appear to have been professionally rescreened maybe 20 years ago, and look very good with light crazing and a pleasant yellowish color. The rosewood veneer has some minor chips here and there but is very nice overall; the case is refinished. This clock uses a large weight driven movement, similar to that in the Office No. 1, and with original flat iron weight and old pendulum. Retains original calendar mechanism with original roller covers [now dark] and in good working order. Height 42.5" $1000-1500

334-a C.1862, Seth Thomas, Plymouth Hollow, Large Rosewood, Gilt Cap Column Calendar, 2-weight, 8-day with strike, using Mix Brothers patent perpetual calendar mechanism. Note this model and the "8-Day Parlor" model with full columns are the two earliest shelf calendars produced by Seth Thomas. This particular clock suffers from some neglect, both dials are flaking, calendar hand incorrect, and gilt caps have been "sprayed gold" rather than proper leaf. Still retains a very good full label plus the instructions behind the mirror. The rosewood veneer is quite good and the case is sound. Height 32½" $900-1200

335. ***C.1900, French, [for S. Smith & Son, London], an "Over Seas Empire Clock", English patent 19460. A well made French lever time movement is housed in the heavy cast and turned base, and rotates the 5.5" terrestrial globe once per day, the cast brass equator ring with two sets of "I—XII". The English made globe with rotational wear at the equator and other rub spots as well, but still overall very good and quite legible. From the Arctic circle extends a brass pointer that may be set to local time, or to any city on which you wish to monitor the time. Height 12" $1250-1750

336. C.1890, New Haven, "Chime Clock No. 1" in oak with brass trimmings. We’ve had this 8-bell clock before, but never this complete and original with all finials, feet and trim intact. The description in the New Haven catalog is inadequate; please see Tran Ly’s New Haven book, page 400, where he pictures 4 views of this unique and sturdy movement. Note it plays Whittington 8-bell tune, not Westminster as indicated in the catalog. There is a pull repeat lever out the top of the clock that repeats the hours on a large gong in case you lost count. Uses a unique disc pendulum with center ball adjustment. The cast bells have excellent tone. The dial is silvered, etched brass with cast spandrels in the corners, with F/S scale below hand shaft. Case with minor wear, but with original finish in very good condition; beveled glass in door. A hard to find clock. Height 18" $1500-2000

337. C.1820, An Off-Center Pillar & Scroll shelf clock with the label of Seth Thomas, Plymouth, Conn. This clock has a period off-center strap wood movement, but it is apparently not the original movement to this case, as each side of the backplate has been extended about 3/8". The case is in fairly good condition, although the feet are replaced [the skirt appears original]. The scrolls are original with restoration to the tips. Side returns are new. Curiously, the dial appears to be original to the case, but has been modified with a new seconds bit hole [the original was about ½" higher] , and we are not aware of a strap movement with that ‘scape wheel location. There has been no re-drilling or plugging around the original winding holes, and this is a dimension unique to this mov’t. Finally, the dial has had a very thin overpaint of the white surface and the numerals and decoration are redone [attractive]. The tablet is repainted, properly and very nicely done with 3 gilt borders. Canister weights with pulleys in top are repros by Vinnie Versarge. Finials are 20th Century Terry style. Hands are old, but probably off a stencil column, as minute hand is too long and has a short tail; height 30" $1500-2000

338. C.1820, Seth Thomas, Plymouth, Conn, Off-Center Pillar & Scroll. Has a very good 30 hour strap movement with count wheel strike. Dial is original with some flaking, but very repairable and never redrilled; dial has a seconds bit and hand. The case has good scrolls, although both have been cracked and reinforced from the rear. The feet and skirt are later replacements. The tablet is a very well executed replacement, properly done with 3-sided gilt border and off-center pendulum aperture. Pulleys and three unique ST finials are original. Hands are period. Proper lead weights are reproduction. Relative to what is available today, this is a decent scroll; height 30" $2500-3500

339. C.1830, Bishop & Bradley, Watertown, Conn, Pillar & Scroll. Clock retains a wonderful label noting Eli Terry patent. Movement is type 1.116 [S. Taylor], which was used by Bishop & Bradley. Case top and bottom are original and perfect; no evidence of scroll repair. Very nice original dial and hands. The tablet is original with some paint loss in center, and a wonderful large gilt border. The finials are modern; otherwise a very fine clock; height 30" $2000-3000

340. C.1825, Norris North, Torrington, Conn, Pillar & Scroll, with "Torrington" style wooden movement. This clock has a very fine case with all original top & bottom; there is one small veneer patch on door which needs attention. Good original glass [cracked and glued] with huge gold borders, and with some paint repairs in the scenic area. The dial is original and magnificently colorful. Hands are period; however, the minute hand is now screwed into the center arbor which needs its end restored. Very fine label with 1820 census figures; original finials and pendulum bob; nice clock; height 29.75" $2500-3500 See lot 435 for similar clock

341. C.1825, Silas Hoadley, Plymouth, Conn, Pillar & Scroll, with "Franklin Clocks" label. Clock has original "upside down" movement, but mov’t has had some poor repairs [count bridge replaced with brass one, and 4 metal rods put through front and back plates to keep plates from deforming…..this is correctable. The case has an incorrectly replaced top and bottom of solid mahogany and new glue blocks [cosmetically appealing, but incorrect]. Tablet is original with wonderful border, but is peeling [mostly in center] and will require attention. The dial is original, but very dirty and worn, AND there is one rear gouge which comes all the way through to the front. Hands are original; finials are modern Terry type. Ivory escutcheon replaced with wooden one and added brass door knob. The holes for pins to hold the movement are incorrectly filled with toothpicks, so mov’t is loose in case. However, the movement is original to the case, and the clock is rare and could be restored to proper condition; ht 30" $1750-2250

342. C.1830, Riley Whiting, Winchester, Conn., Pillar & Scroll. This is a very nice clock, the case in very good original condition. Top & bottom are original [cracks on scrolls, but all pieces original]. Good Whiting movement. Beautiful + original dial and hands. An added brass knob on door. The tablet is a nice reproduction and finials are 20th century (and too small), but otherwise complete and original--including round tin pulley covers. Height 31" $1500-2500

343. C.1895, French, rare Swinging Magician mystery timepiece in outstanding condition. This clock is virtually like new. The movement is housed in the nickeled canister, which has an embossed brass dial with individual porcelain numerals [all intact]. The magician {some call him an acrobat} sits on a box, looking down at his dog on the base. The entire magician/clock assembly is a swinging arm which rocks back and forth {pivoted under the little box he is sitting on}. The tick you hear is of course the short pendulum inside the canister. Ht 15½" $5000-7000

344. C.1853, Atkins & Whiting Skeleton Clock, under glass dome. The movement is a Joseph Ives Patent 30 day wagons spring, time. The brass dial is skeletonized to add to the detail and beauty of the piece. The dome and base are both ‘period’ & appear to be original to the clock. See R. A. Bourne Sale of May 21, 1985, where the sister to this clock sold for $2500 [lot 70]. For additional reference, see Horology Americana, page 166. The interest in domed skeleton clocks motivated many wagon spring owners to ask their repairman to mount them under glass. Height of movement = 13.5". Total ht = 15.6" {Dworetsky’s measurement may be mis-printed} $2000-3000

345. C.1895, French, Crystal Regulator with Candelabra. This is quite a fancy ormolu set with cloisonne` enamel work virtually everywhere, bases, uprights, candleholders, bezel, etc. [colors are red, blue, white and aqua] The gilt pendulum is set with brilliants and has a center portrait of a lady. The porcelain dial is cream colored with fancy wreath decorations. Note the crystal case with 4 full standing Corinthian columns, and all three pieces on nicely chased cushion shaped feet. The movement was recently cleaned professionally and is in good running order. For comparison, see also lots 362 & 362-a. All three sets merit your attention; ht 17.5" $3000-5000

346. C.1910. German, Junghans "Batboy" swinging arm clock in superior original condition. This is one of the earlier clocks in this series, and has the original bronze statue, with artists signature, mounted to a dark green onyx base. The early clock arm is double signed on the dial with usual Star J, and then spelled out: Junghans, Germany. Lest there be any doubt, statue and base weigh 5.5 pounds. This is a rare and desirable version of a hard to find swinger. Height 18" It may sell for less, but we truly feel it should bring: $1500-2000

347. C.1890, Seth Thomas "Lincoln, V.P." walnut, 2-weight shelf clock. This case was stripped and the new finish is a little weak, but your favorite shellac should solve that. The fellow who cleaned the movement used some line so fine that it’s difficult to get it in the idler pulleys at top [this clock uses a compound weight system]. Once your set up it’s OK. The damascening is about half rubbed off the pendulum. Retains original dial [with flakes], hands, label, gong, pendulum. Height 27" $750-1000

348. C.1875, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 1" in excellent original condition. This case has original rosewood graining over mahogany, with one old repair around 8. The original dial and tablet are excellent and the original inside label is superb; ht 34" $1000-1500

349. C.1900, French, "A-1", Porcelain china clock in the Louis XVI style, a sweeping baroque case surmounted by a winged putto with a quiver of arrows. The case is an ivory color with sky blue accents, small violet and blue flowers, a castle on the lake scene on the base, and the whole profusely trimmed with gold highlights {minor wear on highlights}. Note porcelain dial with a large floral wreath, fired into the porcelain. The movement number 1335, with original matching number pendulum, strikes the hours on a gong. Overall excellent. Height 17½" $1500-2000

350. C.1880, E. N. Welch "No. 2 Regulator, S.H." 2-Weight, 8-day time in extraordinary original condition. Not everyone will like the original orange peel finish, now dark and grungy with 120 years of age, but original it is. {rosewood veneer underneath} Retains original 18" dial, hands, pendulum [with brilliant gilt stick]. The only shortcomings are a missing second hand and the door key needs to be fit to the lock. Height 53" $2000-3000

351. C.1905, Ansonia Clock Co., New York, "Crystal Regulator No. 1", in forest green with yellow and violet flowers. This is an exceptional clock, with perfect porcelain dial and open escapement, and neat imitation mercury pendulum with fancy gilded top & bottom trim. The case itself is perfect with no chips, cracks nor repairs, and the hand painted flowers show nice detail. Movement clean and going. Note top urn will be removed for shipment. Ht 17.5" $2500-3000

352. C.1830, French, Oscillating Movement Portico Mantel clock, with an ormolu case with original gilding [camera flash washed it out a bit], the 3" dial with engine turning and with seconds bit at 12. The pinwheel movement fills the "bob" of the 9-rod grid pendulum, with compensation indicator, and knife-edge suspension. Classic Empire styling with 4 tapered columns with Greek bases and capitals. The crutch impulses against a fixed pin on the base, hidden from view by a small ormolu box that restrains the pendulum when the clock is moved for dusting. A refined and desirable clock; height 21.5" $12,000--15,000

353. C.1870, French, Bronzed Spelter Swinging Mystery Timepiece. This rare example is unique, not so much because the movement is in the ball, but because the entire "Pendule" swings from side to side without apparent impulse. [There is NO fixed pivot point below the movement]. Rather, the ball contains a compound circular pendulum, held by a 3-point "mystery" suspension. The inertial forces of the hidden oscillating pendulum, receiving impulse from the movement, are enough to keep the entire pendule swinging from side to side. Rachel is standing at a fountain holding the clock over a make believe pool [mirror in base]. Height 23" $8000-10,000

354. C.1895, Ansonia Clock Co., Bronzed Spelter "Fisher" swing clock, with canister style arm and bob with an Egyptian in cast relief. This arm is finished in nickel with ormolu trim, and has the desirable small [3"] dial; the movement clean and going. These American swingers have received renewed interest over the last 3 years; height 24.5" $2500-3000

355. C.1880, French, Lyre Form clock of marble and ormolu, in very good condition. The fancy porcelain dial is xlnt and signed: Festeau Lejenne, a’ Paris. There is one minor crack in the marble on the side that is not noticeable because of the ormolu. The compound pendulum of brilliants and a counter weight behind the movement, is suspended by a knife edge suspension. A large lyre; height 23" $3500-4500

356. C.1885, French, Rare Torsion Mystery timepiece in running order. Note we sold a cousin to this clock in the last Oct-98 sale, lot 414, however, this clock has a marble base and the statue retains original patina [with minor wear]. The "mystery" of operation occurs because the escapement functions similar to a 400 day clock, and the "tube" rising from the movement conceals the long suspension wire. Height 29" $7500-10,000

357. C.1880, Ansonia, uncommon "Fisher & Falconer", swing clock, a three piece mantle set. It is hard to find this double statue swinger, much less with a pair of "Pitcher A" [see Ly, page 684]. This set came from the grandchildren of a NY couple who had received it as a wedding present in 1884. There is minor wear to the bronze finish, and some of the black paint on the bases is chipped; also the canister has been bumped and has two small dents along the right side of the bezel. Still very nice & original. Height 27" $3750-4750

358. C.1895, Sydney Advertising Co., Sydney, New York, a rare clock with pleasing restorations. The golden oak case retains an old finish [some of these had ads stenciled on the case as well], and is complete with both top and bottom … the only minor shortcomings are two ball finials missing from the top, front molding, however, both rear finials are there to copy. The bottom ad drums and spring motor are original, now with authentic copies of original advertising [bird seed, collars cuffs, gloves, pianos, shoes, plows, stoves, etc.], 4 ads on each drum. A trip chain from the top time movement causes the ads to rotate every 5 minutes. The 6 color tablet is an exceptional replication of the original glass [2-tone foil and all]. The dial pan is original, the dial repainted and bearing the name "Omaha Jewelers". These clocks are rare because they were never sold, rather produced and placed by the Sydney Company in prominent public locations. Height 70" $4000-6000

359. C.1880, French, Industrial Series, Steam Engine. This double boiler model is one of the most desirable industrial models because of the interesting action of the big flywheel & governor. A separate spring motor powers the automaton [through a shaft and bevel gear up the rear] which consists of the connecting rod entering the large cylinder at front-center, the crankshaft, governor (with brass balls) and flywheel. The left boiler contains an 8-day clock with platform [time only] and the right boiler an Aneroid barometer. A circular thermometer is mounted in the "pressure gauge" behind the cylinder. Overall excellent condition; height 18.5" $9000-12,000

360. C.1890, French, Miniature Carriage clock, time only, caryatid case. This is an exceptional rococo style clock in excellent original condition. The movement is a mini carriage clock movement, complete with mini platform across the plates at top and visible through a tiny beveled glass. This clock is very similar to number 32, page 76, illustrated in Fine Carriage Clocks, by Terwilliger+Fanelli. Where that clock has limoge panels, this one has gilt and engraved overlay masks, and the handle is different. The quality of the engraving on these masks is superb, with excellent detail on all amoretti and flowers. Porcelain dial is perfect, with blue Roman numerals and red 5 minute markers. Movement numbered 2271. Case retains original bright gilding with some wear spots. Height shown is with handle up: 3.5" $1500-2000

361. C.1810, French, Louis XVI, rare lyre-pendule, signed Colard a’ Paris, with skeletonized pinwheel movement, center sweep seconds and concentric calendar. In the photo, the calendar hand is pointing to the 9th, just below the numeral III. In searching through La Pendule Francaise, part 2, the closest clock in construction is on page 281, fig 2, although the part 2 "cover clock" has a virtually identical movement. The lyre shaped ormolu frame is mounted to an oval white marbel base, the base and lyre decorated with acanathus swags and the movement held aloft from the sunburst on knife edge. Height 17" $12,000-15,000

362. C.1890, French, Crystal Regulator Set, with limoge type panels to the side, + horizontal panels, finial and urn, all decorated to the highest quality. The side panels of the clock have beautiful silk clad ladies, and the center portion of the urns feature fantasies of mother and child. The ormolu pendulum has a center plaque with a cherub on a floral cloud. The bases of the urns, pillars and finial base of the clock are all finely decorated with champleve enamel. Finest quality movement is mounted to a fancy enameled bezel and the decorated dial bears the name of "Camerden & Forster, New York". Quite simply the nicest crystal set I’ve seen. Height 15" $4000-6000

362-a C.1890, French, 3-Piece Ormolu & Porcelain mantel garniture of the highest quality. The clock with hand painted panels for dial, bottom cameo, transition molding and arch façade. The theme is love, a young couple in the garden, the man unveiling a basket of flowers to the surprise of the young lady. Other scenes with floral and musical themes. The ormolu work is finely chased and retains bright gilding [with minor wear]; lots of repetitive beading and acanthus leaves, with big knobby finials at the side. No chips nor cracks in porcelain, however there is some wear on gold highlights and tiny white trim beads due to cleaning. Height 14.5" $3500-4000

363. ***C.1870, English, for J. E. Caldwell, Philadelphia, classic Georgian style bracket clock with profuse ormolu trim and a heavy cast ormolu "basket top", that is hinged and locked and originally held a tray for valuables. The heavy 3-fusee, 10-bell, quarter chiming movement is to highest English standards, and with profuse floral engraving on the backplate, cocks and pendulum. The dial with an engraved and silvered chapter ring and 3 subsidiary dials for ‘fast/slow’ and for chime on "10 bells or 8 bells" and also for "chime/silent". Strikes the hours on a gong. One of the pineapple finials got lost and a workman carved one of wood and gilded it to match [English supply houses carry these in brass]. Front door lock is sprung and will need attention; height 23.5" $2500-3500

364. C.1875, French, a Bronzed Spelter Mystery Clock with Crystal Pendulum, large size with shaped cornice and wide base with brightly gilded ormolu mounts and feet. This is an exceptional clock, and the collector just incurred a $600 service bill for cleaning the movement. The statue retains its original patinated bronze finish in excellent condition, and the gilding on the bezel and appointments is a bright frosty yellow. If you want to own one mystery clock, this is the one. Note pendulum swings from side to side with no apparent impulse from the clock. Strikes on a bell; black marble base; in good running order; special packing required. Height 32.5" $8000-10,000

365. ***C.1860, French, a Large & Heavy bronze clock, the statue after an original by James Pradier [1790-1852]. Pradier, a classicist, sculpted many of France’s finest statues: the nude figures of Fame in the Arc de L`Etoile, "Lille" in the Palace de la Concorde, the 12 sentinels surrounding Napolean’s tomb, and many works at the Louvre. This clock depicts a nude and shapely female [with loin drape] at the well, a larger than life spread eagle looking her in the eye and embracing her with his left wing; the statue is boldly signed {Pradier} on the water pot at left. The heavy bronze sets on a large oval marble base [now less bun feet]. The good bell strike movement with porcelain dial signed "Susse Freres, Paris". This is a substantial work of art; see A Dictionary of Art & Artists, by Murray, page 360. Height 22" $1500-2500

366. C.1864, L. E. Whiting, Saratoga Springs, NY, "Timby Solar Time-Piece". The patent for this hard to find clock was held by Theodore R. Timby, who designed the clock and developed the movement. There are some bruises on the lower door to this clock, and the lower minute dial is improper [only the paper surface, and these are available] but otherwise this is an excellent example WITH RARE bottom label with details: "Illustrating the diurnal Revolution of the Earth and serving as a Geographical Educator for the School Room and the Family, Ornamental in the Parlor, and useful everywhere. The old and unmeaning clock face may now be banished from use and no longer desirable. The movement in these Time-Pieces is the best ever made in America, unsurpassed in Europe; the balance wheel is set in jewels, making it as a time-keeper equal to the best lever watch regulated in the same way. Wind once a week regularly; Warranted accurate and of perfect workmanship throughout" This really deserved the documentation, as this label is rarely seen. The globe is perfect and signed by Gilman Joslin, Boston, PLUS the remains of the original interior label show this clock to be No. 233 [of roughly 600] Original finish is worn; large hour dial is original w/ minor stains. Height 27" $3000-6000

367. 19th Century, Japan, Meiji Period, Striking stick clock in good condition. These strikers are quite rare; the spring driven strike movement is small and rides in the time channel, and is itself the weight that powers the verge time movement above. To accommodate all the mechanics, these are nearly twice the size of a time only stick clock. Note the "hand" that indicates the time is attached to the strike mov’t and descends, indicating the time on movable [for the change in daylight] cuneiform numerals. The case with some bruises and glue repairs, but generally very good. Height 26" $4000-4500

368. 19th Century, Japan, Shitan Wood Pillar weight driven timepiece, Meiji Period. The "Hand" or time indicator is attached to the weight which descends in the pillar, indicating the time on adjustable cuneiform markers. This is a clean example with typical balance controlled verge escapement, and in running order. The movement is nicely engraved. Ht 15" $1750-2250

368-a C.1890, Ansonia "Juno" Ball Swing clock, restored. This clock will not please anyone who likes the "antique" look, because it has been over-restored. The entire arm has been buffed and both balls are bright shiny brass. The statue has been refinished as well to a dull gold color. Properly the statue would have been dark bronze with verdigris highlights and the balls would have been a dark metallic color, most popularly blue. But this set has glitz and the consignor paid a Broadway price for it and it runs fine. So what do you think? Height 28" $2000-2500

369. C.1875, French, a Patinated Spelter, Crystal Pendulum Mystery Mantel Clock in good as-found condition. The statue separated from the intermediate plate and someone drilled an extra hole for mounting the statue. The finish on the statue is original but weathered; left arm was broken and repaired with a brass "arm band"…could be improved. Gilding on feet and side lions is good, & case is sound Seems to run but will need cleaning for long term operation. Incised marble dial with gold leafed numerals intact. Striking on a bell; minor detailing will improve this desirable clock; height 24" $4000-5000

370. C.1885, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 6" in walnut and in excellent original condition. The only minor shortcoming is the weight which got lost and was remade to match [not a bad job]. Has original nickel plated appointments: bezel, pendulum, beat scale, pulley and key. I notice on winding this for the photo that the click spring needs a little more tension and there are a couple of frays in the brass cable; these are minor maintenance items that do not detract from the clock. The exceptional case retains its original finish and finials. A couple of flakes on dial are filled in. Damascene pendulum. Ht 49" $1750-2250

371. C.1885, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 6" in cherry and in wonderful original condition. This clock retain original dial, weight, pendulum and all case hardware intact. The dial has a couple of flakes and is crazed but is in exceptional condition. The case was rubbed down with fine steel wool, and could stand some wax, but the grain is still closed and smooth. Most any collector of American wall clocks would like this one; height 49" $2000-2500

371-a C.1890 [dated] Seth Thomas "Flora" 2-weight wall clock in cherry and in very nice condition with original finish. The top right molding got knocked off and has been reglued a little askew, otherwise this is about as clean an example as you will find, with original dial, hands, weights, damascene pendulum and beat scale. With carved floral decorations on both sides, and presentation plaque: Presented to the Hospital on behalf of Mrs. Kate E. Miller, 1890. Height 38" $2000-2500

372. C.1850, J. C. Brown, Bristol, Conn, small ripple cottage in excellent original condition. The only minor shortcoming is the Seth Thomas & Sons hands that are currently in place. See Palmer’s A Treasury of American Clocks, page 158 for sister to this clock. Palmer incorrectly identified the movement as S.B.Terry, however this one is clearly signed N. Pomeroy, Bristol, Conn. Pomeroy’s marine movement was reliable and was used in many small iron front, wall octagons and novelty clocks at the time. Despite needing service, this movement is running briskly. Note original dial with Brown signature intact; even a little F/S scale still shows under the circular opening. The gold stenciling is still good, scroll and leaf pattern in the corners and floral sprays on the lower plinth. Rosewood veneer is excellent and all ripple is intact. Original finish throughout; height 8.25" $2000-3000

373. C.1895, French Porcelain China Wall Clock, in the Louis XVI style. The case is quite large for this motif, and there are some original casting flaws visible from the rear, but there are No chips nor cracks. This is a very attractive clock, with magenta colored decorations painted onto white porcelain, cherubs on either side of the dial and garden implements below [rake, scythe, shovel, etc.] The case is deeply 3 dimensional with cast flowers and swags and is signed "GIEN", under a little red castle. The good French bell strike movement is signed simply A+M, and the porcelain dial is painted with the same magenta colored numerals and chapter ring. Fancy gilt hands. Impressive; width = 11.5"; height 18.5" $4000-5000

374. C.1975, a Repro Aaron Willard Shelf clock with dished dial, a colorful tablet and nicely veneered mahogany case. The workman used an old [signed] E. Howard & Co., #70 movement and laid out the weight drop and pendulum swing quite well. The dial surround is dark red with black and gold accents, and the sig. panel is black, with red and gold oval and "Aaron Willard, Massachusetts". OK, so a real one would be very expensive, this one is reasonable; ht 35" $1250-1750

375. C.1895, Waterbury "Regulator No. 60" in mahogany with original finish. This has their best pinwheel movement, porcelain dial and music score hands. The only minor restorations are the 4 finials which were copied from another #60. The clock has been hanging idle for some time and the movement will need cleaning [although it does run], and the pendulum could use some polish, also needs a rating nut, now has a wing nut; also has replacement weight. Retains original black and gold Waterbury label inside base, clearly identifying the model, as well as the original Watebury trademark beat scale [nicely darkened—never been off clock]. We reglued the bottom trim on. Also original door lock and key intact. Big & heavy, special shipping required; height 79.5" $4000-5000

376. C.1850, Howard & Davis, Boston, "No. 2 Banjo" in very good original condition with original finish and rosewood graining intact. The two shortcomings are a lower tablet with a single crescent shaped crack [about 6"], and the hold down tab that is missing [proper bow-tie is there]. Has original iron dial with fading but legible signature; the numerals have been strengthened over original surface. Pendulum bob retains original lacquer and pattern. Weight is original with lead keystone and "II". This size is the most difficult size to find, and despite the cracked tablet, this is a good example; height 44" $3000-4000

377. C.1850, Howard & Davis, Boston, "No. 4 Banjo" in good original condition with original finish and rosewood graining intact. Major shortcoming is the lower tablet which was leafed by an amateur and is not the proper shaped oval. Tom Moburg can help you with this problem. The clock is otherwise excellent, with original finish and graining and a superior dial with proper signature. The clock was running OK when we took it off the wall, but we removed the weight for transport. The movement is signed Howard & Davis, proper mark but upside down – obviously not of concern to the original assembler; height 32" $1500-2000

378. C.1900, French, Drocourt, for Henry Daniel Capt, Geneva: Grand sonnerie, day, date and alarm carriage clock. Charles Allix, in his list of Carriage Clock names, page 434 says "No evidence has been found that Capt sold any pendules de voyage other than best-class French work". This clock is no exception, being the finest gorge case, finely engraved and gilded [some wear to exterior gilding]. The clock is fully numbered in Capt’s sequence, #10886 [also with Drocourt trademark], retains original lever platform with gold balance screws, and runs with crisp action. Has bottom lever with choices: Striking, Silent or Full striking, and with repeat button above the 12 reporting full hours and quarters. The porcelain dials and beveled glass are all perfect; top dial signed "Henry Capt, Geneve", height 6.75" $7000-10,000

379. C.1885, French, Brass Cased Carriage clock, time, strike and repeat in a full column case with champleve enameling on nicely engraved panels. The panels are in 3 areas: top & bottom bands, all the way around, and the dial mask. The style is very middle eastern with brightly colored birds and flowers, with a geometric border. With original lever platform intact, and with original winding key. This is a larger than average clock in excellent original condition; height 8" $1750-2250

380. C.1900, French, Gorge Cased Carriage Clock, time, strike & repeat. There are some small corner chips in the beveled glass, and the dial with some hairlines, lower right, but overall this is a nice example of the gorge style, right out of a house and never monkeyed with. Original lever platform intact, and with proper key. Ht 7.25" $600-800

381. C.1909, Seth Thomas "Empire No. 32" in outstanding original condition. From a home in Londonderry, NH, this is a nice one-owner. Has the good crystal columns with gold overlay pattern. Original finish throughout. Height 20" $900-1200

382.. C.1909, Seth Thomas "Empire No. 5" in excellent original condition. This is better looking than the catalog drawing, as it has a bronze base and top, and the ormolu accents are all brightly gilded [gold worn on the urn]. Retains fancy floral dial in good condition and faux mercury pendulum w/ no cracks; running; ht 14¼" $500-700

383. C.1900, Seth Thomas "Queen Anne" walnut timepiece, refinished. The case on this clock has had a hard life and a couple of the spindles and finials have small nicks and gouges that are not visible from a distance. The original dial has a flake both in and by the numeral 12. Movement is clean and running. Will remove pendulum for shipment, as it is pinned directly to the movement. Overall very good condition. Height 36" $500-700

384. C.1890, French Figural Clock, "1~ Poisson" "First Fish". This is a bronzed spelter statue, signed Tremo, and with original colors and patina. The detail is exceptional, capturing the joy in the young boy’s face. Note he is holding the fish in his left hand and his wooden pole and string in his right hand. The dark pink onyx base is also in like new condition, and with ormolu trim intact. The good bell strike movement was just overhauled by a Cincinnati jeweler, and is running. Fancy porcelain dial with floral decoration. A very nice clock. Height 22" $600-900

385. C.1885, German, Gustav Becker, 2nd Baroque, 3-Weight, Grand Sonnerie Wall Regulator in excellent original condition. This is one of 5 clocks shipped from Vienna on April 1, and we had to make do with a digital image. This clock is from an Austrian home and the movement will need service, but is in excellent as-found condition, with matched embossing on the dial, pendulum and weights. The carving on the case is exceptional, and with a carved tail piece as well. Height 53" $3000-4000

386. C.1840, Austrian, Biedermeier, 3-Weight, Grand Sonnerie. This clock was restored in Vienna, and the broken glass dial was replaced professionally {wish I knew who could do work this nice}. The fancy cast bezel is original to the clock. Note also the early rectangular beat scale and 4 spoke pulleys. The hands are set at 22 minutes to 2 and so look like one is missing, but they are fine. This case may have had a carved top piece which is now absent, but the quality of what is there is fine. Height 43½" $2500-3000

387. C.1885, Swiss, 12-Tune Music Box, with restorations. The top cover of this box had to be made new, and is more brown than the rest of the box. Fortunately the old hinges and lock pieces were available to be used, and the top was veneered in proper fashion. The play/stop lever spring was broken and the repairman just wound some spring wire around the governor arm, and it is not functioning properly. Now the negatives aside, this box plays 12 lively tunes on a 11" cylinder that are pleasant to listen to. The lid with a color laser copy of a tune sheet from another box, meant to deceive, as these are not the tunes the box plays. Width of box = 20" Would be $1750 if all correct, my guess is $600-900

388. C.1890, German, Winterhalder & Hofmeier, 3-Train Bracket clock, chiming the quarter hours on your choice of Westminster tune on gongs or Whittington tune on 8 bells. This is a smaller than normal mahogany case and the large German movement barely fits inside. Note the top pineapple finial is a replacement, should have an urn with flame. Also someone pried the front door open before they found the key [door key is present]. The rest of the case is sound with cast caryatids at the corners and cast frets in the side of the case, plus brass carry handles. The dial has a finely engraved brass center and spandrels, and with subsidiary dials in the arch for F/S and 8 Bells or 4 Gongs, and an Albany, NY, jeweler. The clock is running and chiming but has not been serviced for some time. Height 19.5" $2500-3000

389. C.1820, English, C. Williamson, Royal Exchange, London. An attractive 2-fusee, bell strike bracket clock, the mahogany case with carved leaf trim up the sides, and surmounted with a large finial resting on a carved base, and the case with 4 brass ball feet. The dial was repainted in the 1950’s and not the best job was done, however, you can live with it. There is a letter inside from the owner at the time, W. H. Spencer who purchased the clock in Massachusetts, and gave it to a friend along with the letter, Oct 18, 1966. There are some chips and cracks in the veneer, and a glue joint that will need attention. The movement is running and striking but will need oiling. Movement is nicely signed on the back plate by the maker. Height 19.5" $800-1200

390. C.1845, Silas B. Terry, Terryville, Conn., oversize steeple with Eli Terry’s 1845 patent 30 hour balance wheel movement, powered by two detached turned wooden fusees, time and strike. Retains original dial with opening at 12 for viewing the ‘scape wheel and motion of the seconds hand. Lower dial opening shows oscillation of the large balance wheel. The case has been refinished [not the best job] and the base veneer replaced; veneer on the side bands has interesting "stripe" appearance; both finials are recent turnings. See Horology Americana, page 183 for details on this same model. Hour and minute hands seem original; seconds hand is a replacement. Clock has been in storage for some time, and although mechanically sound and complete, the oil has gelled and the action is quite sluggish. Best part is the "like new" label that is the nicest I’ve seen; a very uncommon clock; height 24.5" $3500-4000

391. C.1895, French, Porcelain China Clock in Louis XVI style, with 3 dimensional floral sprays. There are a couple of minor leaf tips broken away that only reveal themselves on the closest inspection. You will never miss them. The dial is signed "Grand Depot, Rue Drouot, Paris", and with fancy floral wreath décor, and gilded hands. Of the 4 dozen porcelains in today’s sale this is among the nicest. Ht 14.5" $1000-1500

391-a C.1880, French, large Nautical Theme clock from the Industrial Series. The heavy automaton movement housed within the gun metal capstan, rotates the copper and brass section for about 10 hours on a winding. Note the lighthouse includes 2 time dials [opposite] for the 8-day cylinder movement, plus a barometer and circular thermometer. A large compass is at the top under the canopy. Surrounding the base are an anchor and chain, a davit with chain, a brass block with hook and a brass lifesaver -- all intertwined with a long length of brass hawser. the whole mounted to a round black marble base. We sold the cousin to this in the last sale, lot 383, which had bronzed anchor and tools, while on this one they are steel gray in color. Still a hard to find clock. Ht 20" $4000-6000

392. C.1890, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 11-A" in quarter sawn oak with curly ash veneer on the front surfaces, and with original finish intact. These regulators were made in limited numbers, using the same case as the "Calendar No. 11". This clock has had some tasteful restorations: the dial has been repainted over the original surface; pendulum stick has been replaced [acceptable, could be improved], and the dial surround has been broken and glued. Weight old, hook replaced. Still, this is a rare and desirable clock that would be welcome in most American collections. Has large trapezoid movement with maintaining power, and heavy cast iron bracket [bolted from rear]. Overall very good condition. Height 68.75" $6000-7000

393. C.1825, Riley Whiting, Winchester, Conn., 30-Hour, wooden works tall clock in excellent original condition. On the hood, the small scrolls have their tips replaced. The case itself retains original [and wonderful] faux rosewood graining., also nice scalloped base with pencil style feet, and overall good proportions; brass ball finials are later. The dial is 100% original with no touch up, has flowers in the arch and corners, and "curtains" in the second bit; all 3 hands are old. Original tin can weights & iron pendulum bob [rod replaced]. Height 86" $2000-3000

394. C.1846, Joseph A Wells, Bristol, Conn, Wagon Spring oversize steeple in a typical Wells style sharp gothic case with OG side moldings. This clock uses an Ives 30 hour lever spring movement. Interestingly a sister to this clock is pictured in both The American Clock [Distin & Bishop, fig 265] and in Horology Americana, page 163. The latter book has the clock described properly, while Distin calls it an 8 day and attributes it to "A. Walls". Further details on the movement can be found in Robert’s book on Ives. The case on our clock has some minor veneer repairs, and was repolished maybe 75 years ago, but is OTHERWISE ORIGINAL & complete throughout, with original tablet, dial, hands, excellent label and a sound case. The cords have failed and need replacing, but this is minor in comparison with the excellent condition of this hard to find clock. The tablet does have a couple of flake spots [in rooftop area] that are not noticeable from a distance. Ht 26" $4000-6000

395. C.1840, James Donking, Liverpool {England}, typical north country tall clock with wide proportions and double columns on the hood. The case has attractive crotch mahogany veneers and has been refinished. The back has been reinforced and the feet are missing and a block of plywood is reinforcing the base of the plinth. The good English 8-day bell strike movement has a colorful dial with authors in the corners and a rolling moon in the arch . A seconds bit below the 12 and a simple calendar circle above the 6. The original painted dial with crazing and some touch up and a signature as in the title line of this lot. Top finials are later. The weights are home made, but well done and substantial enough for the task. Dial = 14 x 20" and total height = 94" $1500-2000

396. C.1905, Waltham Clock Co., Hall Clock Model No. 35, 9-tube, in very good to excellent original condition. The only minor shortcomings are a missing lock for the upper door, and the pendulum was dropped and has a dent on the right side. The finish on the case is original and excellent; minor dings along the skirt from a vacuum cleaner. The clock features the large and heavy 3 train movement that Waltham is famous for; the dial retains original gilded mask in bright condition, with rolling moon in the arch, and engraved Waltham Clock Co., above the 6. Also subsidiary levers for strike/silent, chime/silent and Whittington or Westminster. Chiming on 8 tubular bells and striking the hours on a 9th [the longest]. This is a solid mahogany case and is very heavy; deeply beveled glass in door and hood; special shipping required. Height 101" $6000-8000

397. C.1880, Austrian 3-Weight, Grand Sonnerie "Vienna regulator" in good condition. Has a good Viennese movement with nice workmanship, and strikes the quarters and hours on two coiled gongs on the rear palate of the movement. The porcelain dial is fine with no cracks, and nice old hands. The smaller finials appear to be replacements. The top is original. Walnut case retains original finish. All 3 weights are new. Height 49" $1400-1800

398. C.1865, Austrian, 2-Weight, Vienna Regulator in restored condition. This case has had both top returns and finials replaced, and the entire case refinished a dark cherry color. The movement itself is of highest Viennese quality with a perfect porcelain dial and fine hand cut hands. Movement retains old gut that is starting to fray and restringing is recommended. Good weights and 4 spoke pulleys and bob is perfect. Height 41" $700-900

399. C.1975, Austrian, Grand Sonnerie, 3-weight Vienna Regulator, with restorations. The top is made later to fit case; pulleys are new. The seat board has taken a slight warp, tipping the movement forward so that the bezel and minute hand now rub on the glass near 12. The movement itself is clean and sound, and if you prop the door open about ¼" the hand clears the glass. A new seat board [or work on this one] will cure this problem. Note unusual slender turned columns on case; rosewood veneer on flat surfaces is very attractive; there is a dry split at top of door. 72 beat case with original movement; height 49" $1000-1500

399-a C.1865, Austrian, 30-Day Vienna Regulator time only in an attractively restored serpentine case. This clock was professionally cleaned and the case refinished to a dark cherry color, and the 4 finials are new, stained to match; there is a split in the bottom, front of the door which could be worked on. The movement itself is of exceptional quality with 5 wheel train, fine pivots, and maintaining power. Note interesting pulley with "swirl" shape spokes. The weight is new. Height 48" $900-1200

400. C.1850, Austrian, a Late Biedermeier, 3-Weight, Grand Sonnerie regulator, in a dark rosewood case with satinwood stringing along the edges. This clock has been restored and the new seat-board is a little short, front to back, so you have to be careful not to push it in too far, or the gongs hit the pendulum. Once you get past this aggravation, the clock runs well and belts out the quarters loudly. The cast shell pattern bezel is not original to this movement, [slightly large] and has had some small blocks soldered in to make it fit the dial plate securely. Well made movement and 2-piece brass bob. An elegant clock; height 45" $1500-1800

401. ***C.1880, German Perpetual Wall calendar clock, spring driven. Has a heavy, well machined calendar movement, with center ribbon for the date. Note the ribbon has been replaced and hand numbered and could be improved; the day and month rollers are original paper in good condition. The well made 8-day movement is of the best quality with solid plates and cut steel pinions; porcelain dial and "R-A" pendulum are prefect. Of special note is the original gold leaf tablet, with openings for dial and calendar indications. This clock was stolen out of the original owner’s home, and when the police recovered it, the felon had broken up the case, but fortunately not the glass. The case shows a bit of regluing and staining on abraded surfaces. Still this is an unusual clock, worthy of your attention; height 35" $900-1200

402. C.1875, Austrian Grand Sonnerie, 3-Weight wall regulator in generally very good condition. The major shortcoming is that the tip of the minute shaft was broken by forcing the hand pin through, and the minute hand is currently held on by a squeezed wire. A proper restoration requires a good clock maker. Otherwise this is a very nice clock, with a good Remember [Gebr. Resch] movement, serial number 7505, and with the pendulum and mounting plate with matching numbers. Someone added an extra wall hanger on the rear which can be left or removed to suit. This is a long case with 72 beat movement, complete with original top, base and finials, and has an elegant style; height 57" $1400-1800

403. C.1885, Gilbert Clock Co, "Office Drop Calendar", with Maranville patent calendar with rotating cardboard dials for day and date. This clock is from a home in Haverhill, Mass and has been well cared for. The top bezel split and has an old repair at 12, other minor abrasions, but overall an excellent clock with original finish throughout. Good interior label with instructions, and rear label as well. Height 33.5" $1400-1800

All Heights for Carriage Clocks are with handle up.

404. C.1900, French, Grand Sonnerie Carriage clock in a brass Corniche case and with original leather covered travel box, less strap. The movement and case numbered 1548, and with original lever platform intact. This clock will tick and strike, but is as found and will need cleaning. Three position lever in base for silent, quarters and full strike. All beveled glass is perfect. 8-day with alarm and repeat button above the 12. Height 6.5" $1400-1800

405. C.1875, French, Paul Garnier, No. 9186, Time, Strike, Repeat & Alarm carriage clock, profusely engraved. The well made movement and case are numbered 394. This case is engraved with flowers, leaves and scrolls on the top, columns, base and handle, as well as the rear door frame. The engraved dial mask offsets a 2" round porcelain dial, and with a small alarm dial at 6. Although the clock runs and strikes, it has not been serviced in some time and the brass work is a bit dark; the original platform has one replaced retaining screw. A well made clock; height 6.25" $1000-1500

406. C.1880, French, Drocourt, for Tiffany, No. 11150, Time, Strike, Repeat & Alarm carriage clock, in a brass Gorge case with engraving and pink enameling. Although the external gilding is gone due to weekly polishing by the maid, the mask is very bright, although some enamel has flaked off there as well. Front, back, top, base and columns are engraved. Retains original lever platform and runs and strikes, but will need service. Perfect porcelain dial is signed Tiffany, Reed & Co., height 6" $1400-1800

407. C.1900, French, Quarter Striking Carriage Clock, in a Corniche case, as-found. This clock suffered some transit damage and has a chipped front glass, and the tip of the minute hand is broken away. Repeat mechanism seems jammed, but strikes OK. Top, side and rear glass are fine. Retains original lever platform intact, but needs service. Has lever in base, marked "Silence, Str. Quarts".Height 7" $1200-1600

408. C.1900, French, Brass Cased Carriage Clock time & strike, as-found. This clock has some potential, but took a tumble and the movement is now tipped back a bit in the case. At the same time, the left glass got chipped and the top left corner of the otherwise good porcelain dial got chipped. The dial chip will not show when the movement is repositioned. Retains original lever platform intact. Dial sig; Bigelow Kennard & Co.; movement is functional; height 6.75" $275-375

409. C.1850, J. C. Brown, Bristol, Conn, Ripple Steeple in very good condition. The only item that you will need to attend to is to change the screws in the mounting blocks, which were drilled through the case to accept machine screws. BUT the rest of the clock is fine, with original dial in excellent condition, a fabulous original tablet and good label. Note also ivory knob and original finials intact. Case is attractively re-finished. Height 20" $1000-1500

410. C.1850, J. C. Brown, Bristol, Conn, Ripple Beehive in excellent condition. This is really a nice steeple with original dial [signature faint], neat stenciled tablet with motto: "Time cuts down all, both great and small", a superior label, ivory knob on door and old hands. About as nice as they come; ht 19" $1200-1600

411. C.1848, J. C. Brown, Bristol, Conn, Ripple, Round Gothic with four candle sticks and finials. This is a good ‘onion top’ as some folks call them, and has been tastefully restored. The movement blocks had failed and had to be spliced and glued; the label is about 60% there, and someone fit a great old cut glass tablet [bottom of door is relieved a bit]. The exterior of the case is original with minor scrapes, but is generally excellent; height 20" $1250-1750

412. C.1850, J. C. Brown, Bristol, Conn, Full Ripple steeple with one of the nicest cases we’ve seen in a long time. Unfortunately someone added an alarm to the clock at one time, cut the dial center for the alarm disc, and soldered a pivot post on the left side of the movement. The lower alarm is now absent. All this misfortune aside, the clock retains a decent label and a Superior tablet of the "President’s House", viewed from the Potomac with sailboat and fishermen. Height 20" $1250-1750

413. C.1850, Forestville Mfg [J. C. Brown], ripple beehive in good restored condition. The lower frosted tablet is new. The case has been attractively refinished, and the ripple is a nice sharp hounds-tooth pattern. Movement is clean and running. Label with tears and is dark from stripping solution. Ht 19" $1250-1750

414. C.1870, Austrian, Small Vienna 1-Weight, with 4.5" porcelain dial in good condition, with no hairlines. This is a very nice size clock, in light walnut with black accents. The pendulum has some shot in it and we had to tape the back of the bob to keep it from falling out; suspension spring is home-made, but clock seems to run OK. Movement is original to the case + dial signed: Josef Wagner. Height [tip to tip] 38" $1200-1500

415. C.1880, French, Gold & Silver accents on Rococo carriage clock, the case signed G.P. and with number 1740. This is a time, strike, repeat and alarm, in an exceptional case that measures 9¾" {handle up}. The porcelain dial is excellent, hands original and it is clean and running. See A Century of Fine Carriage Clocks, page 92 for this same case, only all gilded. $5000-7000

416. C.1890, French, Ormolu and Panels, Mantel clock with fine detail. The original gilding on the clock is bright and yellow. The panels actually have more of an aqua shade than the blue showing in the photo. The hand painted dial panel shows a lover singing and playing the mandolin to his beloved, the Roman numerals painted on shield shaped areas w/ gold surround. Ht 13" $1500-1800

417. C.1880, French, Brass Cased Carriage clock with free standing columns. See A Century of Fine Carriage Clocks, page 28 for this same case, except Fanelli’s clock shows hand painted panels while this one has a damascene type applique over metal, bright gold birds on a dark background {dial and both sides}. Our dial is signed Giles Brother & Co., Chicago, and the clock is time, strike and repeat. Height 8¾" $3000-4000

418. C.1925, Sterling Bronze Co., NY, with Chelsea time only movement. We had the cousin to this clock in April ’98, lot 400. Current lot has a presentation inscription on the base: Mary Lyneh Wentling, 1925. The bronze portion of 2 kneeling Atlas on platform holding a drum dial measures 11", on a white stone base which adds 2"; ht 13" Excellent. $1200-1500

419. C.1850, French Fountain Automaton clock, the twisted glass "water" rotating by virtue of an auxiliary movement in the tower. The early time and strike top movement has silk thread suspension and the fancy cast ormolu dial has Roman numerals painted on small circular areas in the casting. 15" $2000-3000

420. C.1900, French Fancy Crystal Regulator with multicolor cloisonne` enamel on all 4 pillars, the bezel and the top & bottom of the mercury pendulum. The numerals on the gilt dial show both wear and touch up and could stand professional attention. Otherwise excellent. Height 11½" $1250-1750

421. C.1885, French, "Rescue" Automaton. This is a rare clock. The sailor has dropped the sails of his small boat as he scans the horizon for help. By virtue of a separate spring motor, the sailor is rocked from side to side. The base with a small brass plaque engraved "Rescue". And with a good French 8-day time and strike clock in base. Ht 26" $4000-5000

422. C.1904, Ansonia "Coronet" Crystal Regulator, with jeweled sash and pendulum, and with open escapement on good porcelain dial. This is a great looking American clock. 14.5" $600-800

423. C.1875, Swiss, Interlaken area, large carved mantel clock, featuring a spread-wing eagle at top, and a doe and her fawn at the bottom. This is an exceptional piece with good detail on the animals, leaves and flowers. Uses a typical French time and strike movement, with a black dial w/ gilt numerals. A great artwork in wood; height 36" $5500-7500

424. C.1880, French, Terrestrial Globe Clock, signed J.L. & Co. This is a heavy clock of ormolu with a black marble base. A central tower containing the movement is flanked by two bearded faces, brightly gilded. 425. C.1880, French, Rare 400 Day clock with complex compound pendulum. Signed M.Y.M. Thomas on dial pendulum and backplate. Ht 11" $5000-7000

426. C.1900, French, A painted spelter novelty of a young farmer pushing a wheelbarrow containing garden vegetables, but notably a large squash which contains a 30 hour alarm clock. The case and paint are in excellent original condition with muted tones. Clock ticks and alarms. Height 10" $1000-1500

427. C.1890, French, Miniature Swinging Mystery Time-piece. The bronzed spelter statue of an infant holding the clock aloft as it swings back and forth. The clock "arm" is very small with only a 2½" ball. Excellent. Total height 15" $3000-3500

428. C.1830, French, Lyre Form Mantel Clock, in ormolu. This is a nice period clock, however, someone along the way moved the pendulum from its normal position behind the movement, to above the movement, suspended behind Diana’s head. To be sure, the change is attractive visually, but not correct. The lyre case itself shows good care over the years; the gilding is touched up in a couple of spots, and is bright and eye catching. It is not clear in the photo, however there are 4 full standing ormolu columns, each topped with a small urn of flowers, and a pineapple projecting from each side; the detail on the ormolu is excellent. Strikes on a bell; silk suspension. Height 25" $3500-4500

429. C.1890, French, Large Conical Pendulum clock, restored. This clock stands over 3 feet and is really imposing. The bronze statue {signed "Laurent, Scpt."} has been regilded and is quite bright. The dark red marble base houses the movement {signed Farcot}, which has a small arm protruding from the case above the 12, and which rotates the pendulum {blue with gold stars} Has black dial with a heavy cast surround & gilt numerals. Time & strike. Height 37" $10,000-15,000

429-a C.1900, French, Small Conical Timepiece, the pendulum suspended from the bronze trefoil superstructure, driven by a small "tail" protruding from the top of the movement and which rotates the pendulum in a conical pattern. The frame mounted to a gilt wood base. Total height 16½" $2500-3000

430. C.1840, French, 4-Column Empire style portico clock, with turned & silvered brass dial and R/A type grid pendulum. Although this clock uses a suspension spring, it is a transitional clock with high quality movement with "beat-set" adjustment on the crutch; no maker shown. The case is veneered with rosewood, and inlaid with satinwood in a lovely floral design. Along the way, someone gold- leafed the transition moldings, and these may be left as-is or refinished to medium brown. Ht 20" $700-900

431. C.1885, French Swinging Doll Clock in unusual 4 column case of gilded spelter, and setting on a worn gilt plinth with floral spray along the base. There are some minor bits of the spelter broken away along the base, but these are not noticeable. A bust of Diana adorns the base and a dove setting in a bed of peonies graces the top. Steel threaded rods, passing through the twisty columns, hold the assembly together. The original porcelain dial is perfect and clock retains original moon hands. Height of clock 14", with base 16" $1500-2000

432. C.1985, Seth Thomas, Parlor Calendar No. 3 in rosewood in excellent condition. The case has been carefully refinished and the rosewood is nicely colored and with attractive striping. Dials, rollers & movements are original and very good; height 27" $500-700

433. C.1900 French, E.T.C. for J. E. Caldwell & Co, Philadelphia, Brass Cased Carriage Clock, Grand Sonnerie, alarm and repeat, in very good condition. There is not a strike shut off lever on this particular clock, so you get full quarters and hours every fifteen minutes. The platform has been replaced with a modern Swiss equivalent, and there’s one minor corner chip on left beveled glass, otherwise this is a sound clock with perfect dial & original key. Allix & Bonnert document this trademark on two fine quality carriage clocks, but do not know the maker; ht 6.8" $1000-1500

433-a C.1900, French for J. E. Caldwell & Co, Philadelphia, Brass Cased Carriage Clock, Oval, time & alarm in generally good condition. The left and rear glasses are chipped and will need replacing. [See Carter’s Glass address in rear of this book]. Case parts all numbered 520. This is a nice small clock, only 5" with handle up, and with a gilt mask over round porcelain dials. Retains original lever platform in working order. Standing on 4 turned feet. $400-500

434. C.1875, Seth Thomas, "Regulator No.1, Extra" in good restored condition. The colorful rosewood veneer was flaked off in a couple of spots, and it has just been sanded smooth and refinished right over the veneer flakes. The tablet is new {proper gold leaf pattern} and the dial is refinished. Movement, hands and hardware original. No label, baffle replaced. Still the perfect ones bring $3000, and this one does look good on the wall, and running Height 40 ½" $1750-2250

435. C.1830, Erastus Hodges, Torrington, Conn, Pillar & Scroll, with "Torrington" style wooden movement. This clock has a fine case with all original top & bottom; the scrolls have a deep backward bend and have never been broken nor repaired. Both glasses have been restored with old wavy glass with bubbles and seeds, the bottom nicely painted with a stencil border of leaves and flowers with farm house scene and gilt orifice. The original dial shows the numerals 3 & 8 slightly worn, some dirt, few flakes and a bit of a gray cast, and with a very nice flower basket center. I would have dated this closer to 1825, but the good label shows census figures for 1830. The original back to the case has shrunk from dryness and now has a piece of duct tape on the inside to keep out dust. Finials are correct 20th C repros; .height 30" $2000-2500

436. C.1880, German, R-A Wall Regulator in the Viennese style, restored. This clock has an attractive walnut case with fluted half columns and carved Corinthian capitals. The top gallery appears to be old and original. The lower finials are replacements, and have masking tape around their dowels…any wood-worker can correct this problem. The movement has cut pinions and dead beat escapement, and a good porcelain dial. Original "R-A" pendulum intact. The minor imperfections do not detract from the attractiveness of this clock; height 33" $400-600

437. C.1906 [dated presentation] German, W & H, 3-train oak bracket clock in wonderful original condition. The heavy movement on this clock retains its original English "Peerless" ID tag, as they were exclusive distributors of the W & H line at this time. The oak case is profusely carved, and retains its 4 original carved finials at top. The very crest of the clock lifts off to reveal a secret box for the key or other valuables. The rectangular brass dial has gilded ormolu spandrels and subsidiary dials in the arch for F/S and Chime/Silent. This clock was a gift to the Rev. J. Grimshaw Brown, on his leaving the parish on Oct 20th 1906, and so engraved on a sterling silver plaque on the base. The movement chimes the quarters on 4 large flat wire gongs and strikes the hours on a 5th. The clock was cleaned in 1995, with attest sticker, and is running fine. Height 17½" $1000-1500

438. C.1940, Precision Thermometer & Instrument Co., Philadelphia, a good Fortin lab barometer in excellent original condition. From a home near Philadelphia, has been in one spot for the last 20 years and is in good order, reading well and with thermometer intact also. Height 43" As nice as they come. $300-500

438-a C.1975, Case only for an expensive laboratory Fortin type barometer. This is a heavy mahogany case with 3 panes of heavy beveled glass – a one inch bevel on all edges. 439. C.1860, Rare, Currier & Simpson’s "Union Barometer" in excellent original condition with full rear label with tears [protected under plastic], giving complete instructions for both the operation of the barometer, its portability and how to turn the thumb nut on top in preparation for transport. But the most noteworthy aspect of this barometer is the small size, with the tube calibrated to give the same reading with its one foot length as the reading of a 36" tube. Height 14.5" $150-250

439-b C.1920 , Austrian 2-weight in severe Deco style. This clock is not quite yet an antique, but the condition is absolutely "like new". It has a polished mahogany case with original finish and 4 panes of beveled glass in the door. But the best part is the fabulous damascene pattern on the dial center and pendulum which certainly took a great deal of time to apply. It is signed Meindl, Burggasse 3, Wien, and there is still today a clock shop on that corner in Vienna. Height 41½" $750-1000

439-c C.1890, German, Berlin style "Free Swinger" in excellent original condition. Again we are struggling with a digital photo, however, this clock too came from a home in Austria. 439-e C.1835, Austrian, Biedermeier, 3-Weight, grand sonnerie wall regulator. This is a lovely rosewood case with satinwood line inlay. Note original one piece dial and cast bezel. 439-f C.1879, German, Lenzkirch, Brass Mantel clock with ormolu trim in Egyptian revival theme with lotus buds and swags of laurel, and with matching original pendulum. The case tower was originally bronzed but is now painted black. 441. C.1910, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 2" in oak, attractively restored. This case has coarse grain and the stain the refinisher used is a brownish-gray. The clock retains original dial, but the dial has an unexplained extra holed drilled at 3 o’clock; second hand is too short, and weight has 3 holes drilled through it from side to side. Still a fairly clean clock and running; ht 36" $700-900

442. C.1890, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 2" in mahogany, refinished. The bezel on this clock had to have new veneer in a couple of spots, and although it looks OK, it is not perfect, also a couple of bubbles in the old veneer; rest of the case is quite nice. The dial has been professionally repainted and looks fine; original label inside; height 36" $800-1000

443. C.1890 French, Fine Porcelain China Clock with profuse ormolu trim. This clock took a tumble and there is a single crack, front to back above the 12. Now it is barely visible, because the large urn and ormolu trim at top hide most of the crack. The case itself is well decorated, with 2 winged cherubs at front, musical instruments on the sides, and a quiver of arrows on the urn; the artwork signed: Carle. An exceptional clock, worth talking to a porcelain restorer. Height 15" $700-800

444. C.1900, French, Blue & White Porcelain china clock in very good condition. The white case is shaped in a Neuchatel waisted style, and with decorations in blue willow style. Although the case has no chips, someone over-tightened the movement straps and have caused a circular stress crack in the back [not broken through]. 445. C.1890, French, Bronzed Spelter figural clock, "Denis Papin". This is a large and heavy clock and with excellent detail. Some bright spots are showing through on the statue from regular dusting. By the late 19th century, a plain porcelain dial was optional for customers who found the hands difficult to read against a fretted dial; this dial with damage at the 10. This is one of Evan’s larger & more fanciful designs with a star motif. The pillar design, delicate wheels and cylinder pendulum are all typical of Evan’s work. Height 21" $1200-1600

448. C.1875, English, Skeleton clock, single fusee, less dome. This is a well made little clock, complete with original chain, dial and pendulum. The half columns retain good stenciling, and the paw feet are original; the eagle splat looks old, but has been cut down from another, wider clock. The dial is generally good, with some re-blacking of numerals and minute marks. The upside-down movement is in good shape [note click spring popped off wheel on strike side and will need attention]. Still a good example of a hard-to-find clock; ht 37" $600-800

459. C.1826, Jerome, Darrow & Co., Bristol, Conn, Fluted pilaster and scroll top. The scrolls are new and too high; repro finials are spun rather than cast. A very attractive clock; height 12.5" $350-450

470. C.1900, Ansonia "Warlock" Porcelain clock in original condition. But the neat part is the combination figure of ivory and bronze, as Harvest’s head and breast, one arm, one hand and the toes of both feet are in fine ivory [not broken]. In her right hand she carried a gilded bag of seeds which is only partly there. Replacement silk pendulum Would be a $3000 clock if perfect; height 18.5" $1200-1600

The case was originally made for a "Torrington" style movement, and has slightly different proportions from those made in the Plymouth/Bristol area. The case is in good condition; the scrolls and returns are original [with minor cracks on scroll tips]. Someone has adapted the case to hold a Terry-type movement mounted to the backboard. The lower portion of the backboard with the remains of a period label [Patent by Eli Terry, made in Nova Scotia {missing}, now added to this case. The dial is old, but from a stenciled column clock. The turned wood finials are incorrect; original hands and pendulum bob; height 31" $800-1200

492. C.1832, Olcott Cheney, Middletown, Conn., Pillar & Scroll. This is a late pillar and scroll by an unusual maker, with its original Cheney movement [see S.Taylor, type 2.1]. Note original tablet of house resembling Monticello will need some repair, but very nice. Replaced escutcheon diamond of lighter wood. This is a late pillar and scroll, thus the dial of this clock is original, despite the fact that chapter ring is outside the numerals. On the dial, someone has varnished over the gilt corners and the roman numerals and the varnish has darkened and needs to be professionally removed. Also the end of the minute arbor has been threaded so that the hour hand now has a nut retainer; there is still a hole for the pin. Modern finials; ht 30" $1200-1500

In the ebonized wooden base is a Swiss 2-tune musical box, and the clockwork mechanism to animate the monkey who nods his torso and head as well as bows the violin aggressively. The monkey’s silk pajamas are original but tattered, as you would expect with the age [not yet needing replacement, just failed seams and worn spots], and leaves and flowers are original as well. With an 8-day French time only clock movement; the dial with a small repair at 6. Height 19¾" $4000-6000

495-a C.1875, Austrian, Vienna Regulator, 1-weight, in as-found condition. This clock came from a home on the cape and suffers a little neglect: lower rt and left returns are missing, trim around tapered bottom is missing; minute hand is replaced improperly. All this aside, the movement is original to the case, the porcelain dial is good and it runs. Very good lines on walnut case with full turned side spindles. Note similarity of this style to Howard model 59. Height 45" $400-600

496. C.1870, German, Gustav Becker {Signed on dial} 2-weight wall regulator in the Viennese style, restored. Note the bottom has been re-veneered, trim molding repainted black, pendulum stick sprayed black, bob with dents, top made new in proper style. The porcelain dial is good and w/ original fancy hands [early Becker style]. Finials are all new; ht 44" $500-700

497. C.1880, German 2-Weight, {unsigned Becker}, same movement as above, but unmarked. This is a good looking clock with a little different style than normal. Attractive walnut veneer with original finish and original finials, and with original top with bust of Diana. Has a super porcelain dial with each numeral on a round mask and with additional trim. The door has a dry vertical split both top and bottom, but really does not detract from the clock; small dent in pendulum. Height 47" $700-900

498. C.1885, German, Gustav Becker, 3-Weight, grand sonnerie wall regulator in the Viennese style. This clock was restored in Connecticut, and has some problems. The top is new and darker than the rest of the clock. The center shaft was broken at the pin hole and now has a threaded nut holding on the minute hand. The click spring on the quarter side is mis-aligned and we had to hold the click in by hand for the photo. Pulleys are new Calcutta jobs {& unfinished}; weights do not match. The movement does run and strike fully and retains original hands and dial. Someone familiar with Veinnas can improve this with a few careful changes. Height 50" $750-1000

499. C.1880, Ithaca Calendar Clock Co., Ithaca, New York, "No. 3.5 Parlor", with restorations. The perpetual calendar mechanism is one of the reproductions from the 1980s. The rear dust cover is new and cut as two pieces; should be one piece on this later case with deep door. Black paper dial is also new. Cut glass pendulum with nickeled surround is original and excellent, and the clock is generally in good condition, and has an excellent external appearance. If it were all original, I'd say worth $3000, but with these changes, say a third less; height 20.5" $1800-2200

500. C.1905, Ansonia "Regulator A" in very nice condition. Walnut case retains original finish, label and hardware. The white area of the original paper dial has been overpainted with white enamel [and some patient person did a good job of it]; from a distance you cannot tell. The original hands have also been brush painted black. Still, this is a very good looking clock that most people would be happy to own. 8-day time & strike on a gong; height 32" $400-600

501. C.1909, Seth Thomas, "No. 50 Empire" Clock, in very good to excellent condition. Although the cast and gilded floral pendulum is not like the one show in the S.T. catalog, this clock comes from a home in Southern New Hampshire, and is a one-owner. Was this an alternate pendulum used by Seth Thomas? The all bronze clock retains its original gilding [with minor edge wear and browning]. These folks recently paid for a professional cleaning of the movement and it seems to run nicely; serial number 51398. Impressive. Height 18½" $750-1000

502. C.1905, German, Gustav Becker, Mahogany cased Westminster chime bracket clock with attractive floral inlay, quality sold plate movement [serial #2,145,257], chiming the quarters in Westminster sequence on 4 straight steel rods and counting the hours on a separate set of 4 rods. Height 16.5" $375-475

503. C.1860, J.B.Wilbor, Paris, a well made 4-column Empire style mantel clock. The ebonized case with ormolu mounts and capital trim, the base frieze with a goddess on a hammock, a cherub having shot her with an arrow. Is she in love? The pendulum and mounts have been brushed with gold paint and deserve better restoration. Still worth the effort; very nice dial with silvered and engine turned center; height 19" $400-600

504. C.1880, Waterbury "Eton" Victorian oak wall clock in good condition. The case was stripped some time ago and the finish is weak. Rear label with tears is protected under plastic. Original dial has browned with age. Still a decent example of a hard to find model; time only movement is running; height 39.5" $500-700

505. A C.1840 New Hampshire mirror case, now with a C.1880 banjo style movement. The mirror frame, mirror and dial all have plenty of age, however the dial tablet is a proper reproduction with stenciled leaves and gold leaf surround. The movement itself is very well made with well machined pinions and substantial pillars. For the country furniture man on a budget, this might do; height 29" $750-1000

506. C.1910, E. Ingraham & Co., "Dew Drop" round drop timepiece in excellent original condition with original dial, pendulum label and faux graining on case. You’ll wait a long time to find a cleaner example of this model; minor stains on paper dial height 23" $300-400

507. Custom lot: a C.1925 English miniature tall case, specially made to accept a Vienna 2-weight movement, mounted to the case back with a brass slide. The oak case has barley twist columns up the trunk and smooth columns on the broken arch hood. The hood is tastefully made with blind frets, small brass rosettes and an old cast eagle. Flat panels have banded inlay and central shells, an urn in the plinth. The small painted dial has a 4.6" chapter ring and red flowers in the corners and arch. The clock stands under 4 feet [46"] and has very pleasant lines. An original this size recently sold at Bourgeaults for $85,000. $3000-4000

508. C.1900, New Haven Clock Co., "Elfrida" wall clock in oak, nicely restored. The top left and right case returns [just the pieces behind the fancy top] are missing, but this is not noticeable from the front, and replacements would be simple to make. Uses New Haven 8-day time only spring movement with front hung pendulum. Pend bob has some dents, but looks OK. The case is refinished to a very attractive golden oak and the dial redone by the Dial House [photo is a bit dark] Height 49" $800-1000

508-a C.1840, Boston area, unsigned rope front, weight banjo, with restoration. The case itself is sound with minor repairs to glue blocks, and the carved pineapple finial later. The tablets appear to be old, however, the center painting of a battleship was scraped off and repainted entirely. The dial is old {with touch-up}, but because of extra holes, I would guess came from another period banjo. Having said all of this, the clock runs and looks good hanging on the wall. Height 33" $700-900

508-b C.1840, Unsigned panel front weight banjo in nice condition. The little turned wood finial at top is done later and a bit out of character, but the crotch mahogany veneer on the panels is rich and well figured – small crack in the center of lower panel. The dial is old, now a bit gray, and clock retains original moon hands. A nice old clock w/ old repair labels; ht 32" $650-850

509. C.1925, New Haven Clock Co., "Willard" weight driven banjo in nice restored condition. The mahogany case + dial have been refinished; the borders of the original painted tablets are touched up, and the eagle has been repaired with a machine screw, front to back. Still this is an uncommon clock with a decent movement, and represents good value. With unique New Haven crank & weight. Ht 41" $750-850

509-a C.1920, Chelsea "Regulator No. 1" in oak, as-found. This clock has some minor nicks and scrapes, and the dial is very worn and touched up {will need professional attention}. However, what is there is original and running; ht 34" $700-900

510. C.1900, French, Crystal Regulator with reeded Corinthian columns at the front corners and heavy cast moldings of acanthus leaves both top and bottom. This is a large and heavy case in need of restoration. The movement does run and strike, but is missing trim grommet over the time arbor. Large mercury pendulum is intact; open ‘scape on dial center and perfect porcelain dial. A good looking clock with potential; height 13.5" $600-800

511. C.1890, "Self Winding No. 8" by Self Winding Clock Co., New York. The walnut case has been refinished and the top 3 finials need to come off and just a little one on each side installed. [See American Clocks, Vol. 2 by Ly]. The damascening has been mostly polished off the original pendulum. Delicate tip to bottom left finial is lost, but you have the sample on the right to restore. The dial has been professionally repainted. Despite the minor short-comings, this is a hard to find model in very good condition; height 45" [will be 42" when you remove top finial] $400-600

512. C.1900, "Self Winding No. 10" by Self Winding Clock Co., New York. The oak case retains original finish. The original dial is virtually like new. This clock came from New York State, and has an old handwritten tag saying it came from the Fuld & Hatch Knitting Co., Cohoes, NY. The pendulum stick has been renewed; hardware intact, and with factory labels. Height 31" $400-500

513. C.1890, E. Howard & Co., Boston, size No. 5 banjo, with unique tablets of Perry at battle on Lake Erie. These tablets are well done and appear to be the same age as the clock, and probably made to order, either from the factory or at time of purchase; note eagle opening in bottom glass reveals motion of the pendulum. The movement is properly signed and the painted iron dial retains original Howard script signature. The glue blocks for the base have dried and separated and will attention. This case is not grained, and is a medium walnut color. Height 28.5" $1250-1750

514. C.1925, Waltham Clock Co., "Willard #1500" mahogany cased banjo clock with Perry’s Victory tablets. This clock is generally quite good, however the border of the tablets have flaked, been retouched and are flaking again; some small bits of gold have flaked as well. The movement is the proper Waltham model with maintaining power. Dial is original and excellent; mahogany case retains original finish. Height 42" $1250-1750

515. C.1855, Unusual waisted wall clock, weight driven, attributed to G. B. Hatch, Attleboro, Mass. The dial has been repainted and a new Hatch signature is now present. However, the basic construction and movement style would certainly have one believe this came from the Hatch establishment. The tablet is new [gold paint only – not leaf]. We would entertain letters or photos from anyone who has a model like this. Runs fine. Height 29.5" $1000-1500

516. C.1845, Daniel Pratt, Jr., over-paste label on a Birge & Fuller 8-day wagon spring in a steeple on steeple case. Movement with signature of Birge & Fuller, Bristol, Conn. The dial is new [looks nice], otherwise this clock is original, including the two etched and cut tablets {the lower tablet cracked into 3 large pieces}. The case retains very nice veneer, minor chips at the door latches and hinges. The interesting thing about this Pratt label is that it contains all the information about the "Patent Accelerating Spring Brass Clocks" that you would see on the Birge & Fuller label beneath. Generally a very good example with unusual label; ht 27" $2000-3000

517. C.1880, French, Ormolu Mantel Clock in the Louis XVI style, with hand painted panels, the center panel of a gentleman and lady in the park, and sides each showing a castle on a hill, all painted in nice detail. The gilding is mostly worn off the ormolu, however the motif is nice: a bird just landing from flight at top, a torch, garlands of flowers, all amidst scrolls and swags. Best part is the hand painted dial panel, a central wreath and each numeral with a gold surround, as if on individual shields. Striking on a gong; height 16½" $800-1200

518. C.1840, French, Ormolu Mantel Fantasy, depicting Hernando Cortez, in formal dress with sword, seated amidst his new world supplies, ropes and kegs, the whole surmounted on a base swept up in two large waves and decorated with numerous spears, flint lock pistol, and axe, all over a large anchor. The best part is the original gilding which looks untouched for its 160 years of age, and is brilliant bright yellow. Anyone into Spanish history will certainly like this clock. With a well made movement, with silk thread susp; note pendulum needs fitting to movement. Height 18" $1500-2000

518-a C.1870, L. Leroy & Cie, 7 Boul’d de la Madeleine, Paris. A wonderful mantel regulator in a burled walnut case with satinwood trim, standing on 4 brass bun feet. The dial and movement are both signed. The movement numbered 21494 and with matching numbered pendulum. Striking the hours on a gong. This clock came from a lady in Manhattan who took loving care of it., and with orig French key. Ht 12" $500-600

519. C.1870, French, Mantel Clock of Alabaster with gilded accents. This is an attractive clock with a hand painted alabaster dial, with individual signet numerals, all hand painted on porcelain. The pendulum features the bronze bust of a lady. Striking on a bell. The alabaster case is not glued to the base, and has never been broken; take care that it is fragile. Height 13" $500-700

520. C.1832, Eli Terry Jr. & Co., Terryville, Conn., stenciled column and splat in nice restored condition. Note this has Terry’s between the plates alarm and three weights. Has new stenciling by K. Larson of Westminster, Vt.{done in original patterns}. Retains a great dial and hands and an old mirror, and old embossed pendulum. Ht 32" $200-300

521. C.1978 [dated] Chelsea, Boston, Holosteric Barometer with 8.5" dial. Note crystal is missing; case and barometer seem fine. Diameter = 10.7" $250-350

521-a C.1977, Chelsea, Boston, Serial No. 801159, Ship’s Strike, "Chelsea" model with hinged bezel. This one with 8.5" dial would go nicely with the barometer above. This clock has received good care, was recently cleaned and is in good running order. Diameter = 10.7" $1000-1250

522. C.1981, Chelsea, Ship’s Bell, 6" dial, less crystal. The movement ticks and strikes OK, and the retainer for the glass is intact. Case diameter = 7.6". Serial number 832543. $350-450

522-a C.1920, German, Junghans, Mahogany bracket clock with Bim-Bam quarters, and in very good original condition with all finials and cast trimmings intact. Has a good brass dial with gilt spandrels and trim in the arch. Good solid plate movement with Junghans trademark. Height 18" $300-400

523. C.1880, Southern Calendar Clock Co., "Fashion No. 6", black dial, in restored condition. This clock has been heavily restored, the case refinished, finials new, the dials repapered, the rollers repapered, and calendar hand replaced incorrectly. Still, it retains original movements in good order, and nickel plated damascene pendulum; door label and back label OK; would be $3000 if all original; ht 32" $1650-1950

524. C.1868, Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 1" in walnut, as-found. This clock has some problems: the veneer came off the bottom trim, so someone simply painted it black [looks Ok on the wall]. The interior baffle is new and has shrunk and is too narrow for the retainer groove, and with photocopy label. The Seth Thomas hands are likely from a later clock; minor chips in veneer on bezel; new stencil tablet looks OK. Ht 34" $550-750

525. C.1930, Waterbury Clock Co., "Barber’s" model, with backwards dial. We were skeptical at first, because so many of these are conversions, but this is a legitimate barber’s model, striking. We removed the dial and checked out the movement, and it was born as a "running backwards" model. The Kramer Company on the dial provided office and cleaning supplies to rural businesses. The original finish is dirty. The movement runs and strikes, but is dirty and needs a clean. Although it is not evident, it is likely the dial paper only was renewed with a proper copy. Good rear label; ht 21" $500-800

526. C.1890, French, bronzed Spelter Swinging time-piece, with restorations. The statue has been attractively refinished, a nice rendition of Cigale from an original by Cherrier [signed on statue & base], and the wooden base is newly turned and nicely antiqued. The arm itself has had some work; the suspension is new, and the rear hemisphere has been recently spun and is not the proper shape [a little egg shaped] Still it is a decent looking clock, runs, and would be $3500 if all original. Height 23.5". $1800-2200

527. C.1875, F. Kroeber, New York, "Pandora" bronzed spelter statue clock [see 1878 Kroeber catalog, page 104] The bronze finish is virtually all worn off the case, and the dial has been repapered with a size too big. Still the casting is unbroken and shows excellent detail. The movement was recently cleaned and ticks and strikes. Case back retains both labels [a bit dark and top one with a chunk out]. Movement is properly signed Kroeber and with 1874 patent date. These castings were done by Nicholas Muller and this one is signed N.M. #-180 under the bezel. Height 21" $400-600

527-a C.1900, Ansonia "Violinist" Figure Clock. as-found. This is a rare statue clock, see Ly’s 1998 Ansonia book, figure 536. This clock has no bronze finish remaining; the bare spelter has oxidized to dark gray. Also, it has received some damage, part of which can be conveniently restored, as general replacement parts are available from Timesaver’s in Arizona. 1> right tear drop is missing = part #19937, 2> top final is broken = part #19874. The hard part is that the musician’s violin and bow are missing, and you’re on your own for those. The movement has been recently cleaned and is in good running order, and the porcelain dial with open escapement is xlnt; height 14½" $375-475

527-b C.1904, Ansonia "Hermes" Figure Clock, in good original condition. This clock retains most [80%] of its original Syrian bronze finish, and has no breakas nor repairs. Good open ‘scape movement and porcelain dial. When they are nice, they are easy to describe; ht 11.5" $500-600

528. C.1910, New Haven Clock Co., "Columbia" wall regulator in golden oak, time only. Note this clock was offered in every configuration: time, strike and calendars for both. To save time and money, all movements were fitted with the stud for calendar side gear. We point this out because the stud is the first extra you notice when taking off the dial. Although the case has been refinished, it retains original dial, hands, pendulum, beat scale and rear label. Clean and running; height 48.5" $550-750

529. C.1915, Waterbury Clock Co., "Regulator No. 82", 30 day timepiece in mahogany. Note we sold the cousin to this clock [lot 344] in October ’98, which was an 8-day weight driven model. This clock uses the double wind month going movement with seconds bit. Minor crazing and some scratches on case; the original dial is near perfect; original hands beat scale and pendulum; overall excellent. Ht 41" $400-600

530. ***C.1850, French, a substantial mantle clock of alabaster & ormolu, as-found. This clock took a tumble forward, breaking the crystal, bending the outer bezel and damaging the porcelain dial at 3 & around the F/S stud. The hands are Gilbert, now soldered to the original hubs. Having said that, the good Marti movement is still intact, the backplate, bezel and pendulum all with matching numbers. Bell strike. The bronze mounts have the gilding rubbed off, but are well detailed rose buds and peonies, with giant fronds scrolling up each side. Height 17.5" $700-900

531. ***C.1900, German, Junghans, Walnut cased musical alarm clock in good condition. Movement runs fine and plays a lively tune; alarm set knob missing. Height 12" $275-375

532. C.1905, Waterbury "Regulator No. 18" in oak, attractively restored. Note that both the top and bottom trim are new, stained to match, and not quite to the proper proportion; they were made from old oak drawer fronts and have good looking grain. The dial has been professionally retouched and is excellent. Clock retains original flat iron weights, painted brown, and proper Waterbury pendulum with concentric rings. Well made solid plate movement, 2-weight, time only. Despite the restoration, this is a large and attractive wall clock; height 48" $600-800

533. C.1832, Jeromes & Darrrow, stenciled column & splat in good original condition. Although there are some minor chips in the mahogany veneer along the edges, this clock has exceptional original stenciling: well detailed leaves on the columns and a superb "team & coach" on the splat; note also the 4 capital blocks are stenciled as well. The original dial retains attractive pink flowers in the corners and dial center. Good label. Mirror has been replaced with plain glass and now with an old print of a Mississippi river boat. Minor restoration would render this a wonderful clock; 30 hour ww; ht 35" $175-225

534. C.1910, Gilbert "Observatory" Store Regulator in very good original condition. The black on top tablet is flaking, and someone cleaned all of the border black off the lower tablet. Still retains original dial and a great rear label. Original finish is dark with orange peel and crazing. Oil is oozing from movement, so I assume it needs cleaning; ht 36" $300-400

535. C.1890, French, Novelty Alarm, Smoking gnome. You put a taper through the hollow cigar in the gnome’s mouth, and it will glow and smoke for some time. There is a length of old hemp in the cigar at this time. The clock case is painted tin, simulating an old iron fireplace with kettle, and a little tin monkey opposite the gnome. Uses a French rear wind alarm movement, which is ticking and alarming, but needs attention. You toy and novelty collectors should like this one; height 10.5" $1000-1250

536. C.1880, French, Night Clock with Blue Shade; uses little pendulette movement. 538. C.1960, German, Oswald Uhrenfabrik, Rotating eye clock, this one a Scotty in a molded composition case. Note the time is 20 past 10. The tips of the ears are a little worn, otherwise complete and original and in very good condition; height 5.5" $450-550

539. C.1930, English [yes] version of Blinking Owl clock. The pendulum [simple wire and wooden circle] got misplaced, however the clock is otherwise complete and functional. This is fairly large, the wooden front measuring 10.5" $200-250

540. C.1880, Anglo-American, inlaid chisel bottom drop octagon in good condition. The suspension wire broke in transit, but that’s only a 50 cent item. Original 30 hour WW mov’t. Height 25" $225-325

594. C.1860, Daniel Pratt & Sons, Reading, Mass, [Depot #2, Union Block, Corner of Union & Marshall St], a good 8-day OG with alarm. 595. C.1829, Orrin Hart, Bristol, Conn, 30-Hour groaner in an unusual case with three pane door. The stenciling has been improperly restored by brush and then wire wooled to simulate wear. BUT the best part of this clock are the original tablets with stencil borders and painted centers {a bit primitive artistically, but nice}. Original dial is also excellent. Rare label. Height 35" $200-300

596. C.1845, C. Boardman, Bristol, Conn, T/S/Alarm {3-weight brass works}, OG in nice restored condition. 600. C.1841 [dated label] Mellish & Murdock, Woodstock, Vt, 30 hour wooden works OG, with several unique features. The door opens from right to left, the case is oversize {has the appearance of an 8 day}, and the Connecticut movement is supported not only by uprights, but by small angle blocks glued in right under the rear plate {looks to me like these fellows had a good idea}. Has nice embossed pendulum, and a small envelope with 3 broken teeth, which go to this movement. Retains nice original dial and old finish. Some wheel repair and a tablet will produce a super clock. Note height = 30" $200-300

601. C.1839 [dated label], Daniel Pratt, Jr, Reading. Mass, double deck shelf clock, with full mahogany columns on bottom deck, and half columns on top. Wooden dial has been poorly repainted and needs professional attention. Hands do not match. Height 30½" $175-225

603. C.1925, New Haven Clock Co., Gilded White metal boudoir clock in excellent condition. We looked in 2 New Haven catalogs and couldn’t find this model, but it is certainly one of the most impressive in their line of 8-Day dresser clocks. 2 young boys appear to hold a large wave which has upset an urn at top, knocked a bird out of his nest, and at the bottom a large sea serpent, his tail twisting all the way up to the clock, the tail intertwined with a long vine of grapes. Although the gilding is worn on the high spots from dusting, this is another "One owner" clock that is very nice; porcelain dial is perfect; height 14" $125-175

604. C.1900, French Brass Cased Carriage clock, time and strike, with a leather covered display & carrying case. This is basically a good clock, has a small spider web in the dial at top left, side glasses with small corner chip, front and rear glasses are fine. Has been updated with a new Swiss lever platform and is in good running and striking order. Ht 5½" $275-375

605. C.1960, Seth Thomas {General Time Corp}, Helmsman model Ship’s Bell with original factory walnut stand with bronze footing. Has factory labels on both rear of clock and bottom of base, and is running and striking fine. This model has a heavy cast case with screw bezel and W. German movement. Nice example of post-war model. Height 9" $250-350

607. Unusual late 18th Century London verge fusee watch movement, signed Jn. Darby, London, now in a C.1900 cast ormolu commemorative case, the clock surmounted by a round globe with Wellington sitting on the world and holding an eagle on his right arm. We’ve had 2 or 3 of these, but never been sure what they were. Because of their similarities, I assume one company was making use of old watch movements. With original base and dome, running and excellent throughout; height 9" $200-300

608. C.1930, New Haven "Whitney" Time & Strike banjo in like new condition, with original stenciled tablets with a ship in full sail. Strikes the hours on a single steel rod, and with 4 original labels, two on the rear and two instruction labels inside. It won’t be an antique for another 30 years, but this is as nice as they come; height 30½" $200-300

609. C.1890, Ingraham, Ionic Calendar in a faux rosewood case and in very good original condition, with original tablet, dial, pendulum and hands. The paper dial has gone a little dark, but is worth keeping as-is. It is uncommon to find these in time, strike and calendar. There is a small piece of the back of the case missing on the bottom that is not visible when looking at the clock from the front. No label remains, but still a neat clock; height 24" $275-375

610. C.1942, Chelsea Clock Co, Boston, Serial #39852, U.S. Navy boat clock. Chelsea produced several thousand of these in black phenolic resin cases, owing to the shortage of brass during the war. This example is in excellent condition and running. Diameter = 7½" $175-225

611. C.1864, Seth Thomas, Plymouth Hollow, 30-hour weight driven OG in good condition, and worthy of minor restoration. This clock has the most wonderful civil war tablet I’ve seen, a screen of gold, backed in black, depicting the Monitor and the Merrimack, two iron clad battle ships, a stone fort, shore encampment, firing canon and injured soldiers all included in the scene. Tablet has never been out of the door. {see close-up of tablet at right} Case is good except for minor veneer chips along outer band, and original dial has a couple of large flakes that can be touched up. Movement clean and running. Height 26" $175-275

612. C.1885, Seth Thomas "Greek" Shelf clock in oak and in excellent condition, with original label inside. The only thing that keeps this clock from being outstanding is a small cigarette burn on the base. Case was refinished some time ago to a light golden color. Height 24" $400-600

613. C.1950, German, Wall Clock. A German family brought this clock to New England, and it is an interesting piece. First, it’s big, 30" high by 23" wide, made of sheet tin and brass, soldered together into a large medieval portico. There are brassy vines up the sides, and a large floral spray at the top, and a slogan beneath the clock "Nutze die Zeit", or freely translated: make use of time! Certainly a "timely" command for today. The clock has a lever movement that is wound by pulling a nylon cord beneath the movement – pull several times and it ratchets the spring to full wind. Runs OK $250-300

614. C.1890, German, Reverse Painted picture frame clock, with a 30 hour time and strike movement. The painting shows the Rhein River Valley, with beautiful Germania w/ sword and shield standing in the foreground. The amazing thing on this clock is the condition. The gilt frame is still bright yellow and none of the painting has begun to flake from the glass. Someone has cut a hole in the back of the clock to aid in adjusting the pendulum, but this is still a nice clock. Height 14" $200-300

615. C.1900, French, Black Marble and Bronze clock in excellent condition. First off, no shipping on this item, it’s 65 lb. and will not survive commercial shipment; pick up in person only. Second, this is one of the nicest ones we’ve seen, with 4 full standing columns either side of the dial and a bronze bust in the arch. The dial is gilt bronze with a gilded sea serpent in the center. Note a bronze button is missing from the base, front, center, and has been filled with putty. Strikes on a gong. Height 14½" $150-250

615-a C.1900, French, Mougin, black marble and onyx mantel clock in good+ condition. This isn’t quite as large as the previous lot, but it is still an interesting clock. The front surface is profusely incised, with gold accent {some gold missing}, and with some edge chips, but overall an above average marble clock, with contrasting onyx columns. Has a good Mougin movement with open ’scape on the dial. Dial center is now dark and needs to be gilded or polished to show of the escapement. Ht 12" $100-200

616. C.1848, J. C. Brown, Forestville, Conn, 8-day, 2-weight, column and cornice in good, as-found condition. The label is a little dark and with tears, and now protected under plastic. The wooden dial is very good, with some flakes, and with a legible signature. The finish on the case is still good and the mahogany with good color. The tablets are replacements. The last owner knocked the cornice off and nailed it on poorly...will need attention. Height 32" $300-400

617. C.1860, Atkins Clock Co., Bristol, Conn, short drop octagon, chisel bottom, rosewood, restored. This clock has had the dial redone by the Dial House, and the case has been refinished. 8-day, time only, generally clean and running; height 25" $225-275

618. C.1870, Ansonia Brass & Copper Co., 8-day double door OG, in original, as-found condition. Retains original dial with some flaking; original floral tablet with the flowers flaked off; label is poor but legible; rusty weights are not old. Height 29" $150-200

619. C.1870, New Haven Clock Co., 8-day double door OG, in original, as-found condition. The label is dirty but legible; original dial is pretty good. The tablet of Excelsior retains the central figures, but the rest is flaked, and could be restored fairly well by stenciling a new border and repainting the background. Note includes spring would alarm and proper dial and alarm set wheel. Height 30" $175-225

620. C.1900, Wm. L. Gilbert, "Porcelain No. 420" in pink and in good original condition. The dial has gone dark from someone spraying oil on the movement, but otherwise this is a nice clock with attractive light pink case, striking the hours on a gong and giving the halves on a bell. There are no chips and clock retains original rear cover and bezel. Minor wear on gold highlights. Pendulum replaced. A two dollar dial and you’ll have a good clock; height 12" $200-300

621. C.1923, Chelsea "Admiral", 4 ½" Dial, with original factory option for "Automatic Bell" attachment. Cheslea only sold the "Automatic" model together with the large bell and solenoid assembly [wall or shelf model], so we must assume the 2 got separated at some time. In any case, you are buying just the ships bell master clock. Note clock is running fine, but is assembled out of time and is striking at 5 past the hour. These are quite desirable and I’m sure someone with a bell will be happy to find this. Height 8" $500-700

622. C.1960, Seth Thomas, "Corsair 6-Inch", screw bezel brass cased engine room clock in good condition. The seconds hand is replaced with a modern aluminum one, but it does go ‘round OK. This model has a well made 8-day movement with 11 jewel ‘scape assembly. Outer diam = 7.5" $175-275

623. C.1910, New Haven Clock Co., an oak cased wall calendar, restored. The dial has been professionally repainted and the case nicely refinished to a golden oak. The turned trim buttons on the case are new and not the style associated with New Haven. Still, it is a good looking clock and seems to run fine; height 48" $500-700

624. C.1930, German, Junghans, an interesting Deco/Classical novelty clock, with large chrome cylinders forming an alcove for the clock, and a classic Roman chariot, pulled by a team on top {spelter castings}. Note this clock took a tumble at some time and the horses were broken away from their mount and have been recently glued in place {not bad, but could be improved}. Has a small 30 hour time only movement with good dial, clearly signed Junghans. Height 10½" $150-200

625. C.1925, Herschede Hall Clock Co., Cincinnati, O., Westminster chime mantle clock, serial number 15300, in a mahogany case, with arched beveled glass door. This clock was sent by UPS and got some rough handling; one of the chime rods is broken off , and the left front edge of the case has some dents that will need attention. Having reported the negative, has a good full plate Herschede movement, with chime/silent lever on the engraved dial. The dial is engraved with the name of the retailer: "Stetson & Krouse". Inside is a 1981 letter appraising the clock for $850. See also lot 453. Height 13½" $350-450

626. C.1955, German, Schatz, made expressly for Swift Instruments, Boston, a good Ship’s Strike and barometer set mounted to a 12" pine plank. These have been well cared for, and the barometer works and the clock strikes fine, but the lever platform will not kick over on the clock, so you’re on your own there; it does not appear to have ever been apart. Please don’t wind it; it is fully wound..! Diameter of tubs = 6.5" $200-300

627. C.1925, German, Bird and 5 Leaf Cuckoo, 2-weight, restored. Has nice deep note bellows. Old hour hand with decent repair. Numerals intact. Cast plate movement; running an cucking. Height top tip to pendulum tip 21.5" $150-200

C.1925, German, Hubert Herr, Freiberg, a good cuckoo and quail {3-weight, quarter strike}, with two bird theme, one resting at bottom and one in flight at top; the sides with large grape leaves and clumps of grapes. The movement is clean, one bellows recovered and working fine. Good old hands {not carved, but nice}. An impressive clock. Height tip to tip 30" $300-500

629. C.1930, German, for American Cuckoo Clock Co., Philadelphia, a 2-weight cuckoo. This clock is dirty, as-found, but with interesting motif, leaves on the case and a howling wolf standing on some carved ‘rocks’ at top. Retains decent label. Note tail of wolf is missing and large lyre movement needs service. Height, tip to tip 23" $100-150

630. C.1920, German, good "GK" brand cuckoo with inlaid case and original rail of leaves. The only minor shortcoming is that the two spindly finials at the bottom are not a perfect pair, one slightly longer. Otherwise this is a very good cuckoo with a fabulous rear label with instructions and "GK" logo, Also heavy cast movement with "G.K." cast into the lyre plate. Height, tip to tip 23" $175-225

631. C.1925, German for American Cuckoo Clock Co., Philadelphia, a good "Hunter" motif cuckoo. The oak leaf, lower left has lost about one inch from tip. Otherwise an attractively carved clock and with exceptional carved wooden antlers [with glue repair]. Rear label about 65%. Running and cucking; height 25" $125-175

632. C.1920, German 3-Note trumpeter with incorrect later bird top. The rail of leaves got lost, and this was the best the collector could find; numerals and hands are new. Now the rest is quite good, a superior trumpeter {with wear but nice detail}, original tin horns and with good tone, and all the little leaves and bits intact, including bottom finials. If you have a spare rail of leaves, or can carve them you can improve this clock. Height 26" $300-500

633. C.1925, German for American Cuckoo Clock Co., 2-weight cuckoo, restored, and with original rack of leaves. Note the case is missing the two bottom finials and the numerals and hands are new. Interestingly, this clock is signed on both the movement and dial "Kuekl Clock Co, Germany" Inlay and small carvings are intact. This one is a little smaller than previous lots, again dimension is from leaf tip to pendulum tip 21½" $125-175

634. C.1880, Austrian, 2-weight "Vienna Regulator" in a walnut case with some improper restorations. The top is new and not of correct proportions. Bottom finials are new and turned of pine; should be walnut. Basic case is good and with original finish. Has a good beveled glass in the door, which was perhaps done later. With a well made movement, the dial signed Leop. Hendl, Wien; weights are not a matched pair. Retains old wooden handle crank. Alex and I put this clock up on the wall and it ran for a few days, so I am confident you will have no trouble with it. Height 49" $400-600

635. C.1840, French, Silk Thread Movement in an interesting historical theme case, depicting Queen Isabella at her desk signing a charter, and below amidst some waves and shells, a 3-mast ship which I presume to be the Santa Maria. The dial has a chip at 8, and the bell, bell standard and pendulum are all recent replacements. Seems to try to run and strike. This was originally a two tone clock with the queen in silver, and now she is mostly polished to brass; gilding on the rest of the case has wear on the high spots. A handy repairman could improve this lot. Ht 17" $500-700

636. C.1850, Terry & Andrews, Brass Spring Beehive in generally good condition. The door latch is missing and the original dial pan has been repainted. Label is about 50%, but shows name clearly. Has a good old tablet with motto: "Time cuts Down All, Both Great and Small". Lyre movement with brass springs clean and running; ht 19" $175-275

637. C.1851, Ansonia Clock Co, Beehive, with 8-day lyre movement {formerly with brass springs, now with steel}. This would have been produced shortly after Anson Phelps bought out Terry & Andrews. This clock took a tumble before it arrived here, knocking out the tablet , chipping the base molding, and pulling the top bezel off its hinge. Still it is a good old clock that can be restored with a minimum of effort; door lock and key intact; height 19" $150-200

638. C.1900, Seth Thomas "Adamantine" in black and tan with gilt trimmings. The original dial has some tears at 8 and 9, and columns and lions have been brushed with gold paint. The celluloid is all intact and will polish up nicely. Movement has not been serviced, but is complete with good springs, running and striking. Height 11" $100-150

639. C.1915, Seth Thomas Walnut "Globe", 15-day. If this clock had its original brass bezel it would be mint original and worth $750. The case is that nice. If you have a spare ST bezel, it’s worth using on this clock to upgrade it. Very good original dial, hands, pendulum and xlnt label. You may also enjoy it as-is. Height 32" $400-500

640. C.1900, New Haven Clock Co. "Violinist" in good, as-found condition. The signed paper dial is dirty around the center shaft. Movement and hands are original and the casting has no breaks… the winged violin player complete with bow. This clock was brushed with gold paint maybe 50 years ago and I would bet that if you strip it carefully you’ll find much of the bright yellow gilding that is under the base. Running. Height 11¾" $90-120

641. C.1905, Wm. L. Gilbert, "Porcelain No. 422" in excellent original condition. We’ve had over 50 porcelains in this sale and this is among the better ones. Color is a medium purple with white and violet colored flowers. Mov’t is clean & going. Height 11½" $375-475

642. C.1910, Ansonia Royal Bonn "La Friese" Porcelain china clock in excellent condition. Who says you can’t save the best ‘till last? The is a very good looking clock, dark aqua at top, light aqua in the center and dark green at the base. Super red roses painted below the open ‘scape dial and the gold highlights are exceptional. No chips in porcelain nor dial, however, there is a hairline at 1 o’clock. Height 10¾" $600-900

643. C.1900, Ansonia "La Corsica" Royal Bonn in cobalt blue, and in excellent condition. When the case was originally decorated, the gilder handled the clock a bit and has his finger prints on the back – they are under the glaze. Has good open ‘scape movement, just cleaned and running well. And with super porcelain dial with no chips. With yellow and ruby red floral decorations. Ht 12" $700-900

644. C.1895, French "La Porte" Cobalt Blue china clock in like new condition. This is a French copy of the Bonn La Porte, with extra gold overlay around the flowers. The top and sides are profusely decorated with gold and it is 98% intact and bright against the cobalt blue. Has a good round French movement, striking on a gong, and the porcelain dial with pastel flowers matching the case. Another magnificent china clock. Ht 10¼" $750-1000

645. C.1890, French, "Trojan" Swinging Arm timepiece in running order. The warrior’s sword got broken at some time and has been nicely replaced {perhaps a bit short}. This clock is otherwise in excellent original condition, the ball with original finish, numerals and hands. Nice small size with 3" ball. Ht 20" $1750-2250

646. C.1900, German, a cast castle novelty with a 30 hour alarm movement. This is a very clean clock with no breaks in casting {usually the spire is broken off}. Good porcelain dial. Cast into the canopy over the clock are the words "Compliments of the Famous" Height 11" $125-175

647. C.1880, French, H & H, Ormolu cartel clock in the Louis XVI style. The movement is serial number 2992 and with original matching number pendulum. This case was originally brightly gilded, was polished weekly by the maid and is now oxidized. It still retains excellent detail and a wonderful porcelain dial with dark blue numerals. Fancy cast brass hands. We’ve left room in the estimate for you to have the clock gilded. Height 21" $500-750

648. C.1890, French, Novelty Mantel clock with skeletonized front plate and open escapement in dial center. With short pendulum movement, the swinging pendulum visible just under the dial. Clean and in good running order. Height 7" $350-450

649. C.1890, German, Gustav Becker, Mini Spring wall regulator in the Viennese style. This is a molded composition front case, with flat reeded columns up the sides and a broken arch crest with a molded lion in the center. The back of the case is traditional wooden construction. The 2½" dial is good, as are the beat scale and R-A pendulum center. This model with 7 wheels in the train, goes for a week. Ht 16" $1750-2250
