There are several empty holes in each plate, and a cutout in the back of the case for a bell.  This clock has potential for someone to complete the restoration in a proper manner.  Interestingly, the case also has little gilt brass rosettes at all 8 corners, and they appear to have always been there.  The inlay on the lower bracket is an urn with leaf display on an oval background.  Case has been refinished.  Ht 41"   $750--$1000

085A.  C.1890  German, Schlenker & Kienzle,  8-day  time/strike R/A pendulum wall clock.  Condition - Walnut alt-Deutsch case in nice condition with original finish. 086.  C.1900, German, for the Eastern market, moving eye cuckoo clock, 1-day, time and strike.   Condition:  the weights, chains and hooks seem to be later replacements.  The movement is original to the case, as are the eyes and old articulated cuckoo.  This one has a nice turbaned lady {flowers decorate the turban}, with the clock dial appearing in her mid section.   Needs cleaning and adjusting, but worth the effort.  Ht of clock only 14.5"   $300--$400

101.  C.1810, Dutch, Stuhl Clock, 30 hour, from a barn in Bloomfield, CT.  The lady phoned Chris at the museum and said she had an old clock that had been hanging in her barn for decades.   Condition:  there is no weight {uses a single 7 pound weight to power time + strike via continuous chain}.  The lead trims have losses and the right side one broken off and wired on long ago.  The painted dial has never been refinished, and with losses and corrosion.  Alarm train missing.  Still has lots of potential.  Funds from this clock will go into the Museum Acquisition Fund.  Ht 27"  $750--$950

101A.  C.1825, Norris North, Torrington, Conn, miniature pillar and scroll, with restorations.   Condition:   this clock has been carefully restored by a very good workman, but even his talents can not cover the signs of repair.  The dial, hands, columns, scrolls, feet and skirt are new.  Mounts for the dial are new.  The balance appears old, including a nice label, now protected under plastic.  The movement is complete and sound, with some repairs, ticks and strikes.  The door tablet is old, C.1845 from a New York OG  {Sperry or Johnson origin}.  As you can see from the foto, this clock is cosmetically very attractive. An original of this model would bring around $5000.  The set of period finials is worth $500 alone.  We have estimated this at the price of a nice reproduction.  Ht 28.7"   $2000--$2500

101B.  C.1880, Austrian, 2-Wt, 8-day  Vienna Regulator, in an Alt Deutsch dark walnut case.   Condition:   the movement to this clock sat on someone's back porch for one winter, and has turned blue with oxidation.  The wheels still turn, and it will restore, but will require service before use.  The porcelain dial has a crack and hairlines at 8 o'clock.  Hands, weights and pulleys are original.  The top is old, but made up of bits from another piece of furniture, actually looks fine on the case.  Ht 49"   $400--$600

101C.  C.1875, German, Gustav Becker, 3-Wt, Grand Sonnerie,  Vienna Regulator, in a double door style case with original top.   Condition:  the movement needs some professional attention.  The trains are complete between the plates, however the quarter gathering pallet is missing and the quarter strike hammer is missing, and two of the weight stops are lacking.  These are all things that someone used to Viennas can repair, however not for the timid.  The mounting bracket and movement are original to the case, we took off the bracket to be sure.  Potential here for the right workman.   Serial # 433217.  The weights are setting in the bottom of the case; orig 3 pulleys are there, tied on, but cord is only on one train.  Ht 49"   $1000--$1500

101D.  C.1905, Czech, Gustav Becker, 2-Wt,  Vienna Regulator, in a dark walnut case, with some old worm damage in top molding, rod strike.   Condition:  Well made Becker movement is signed Schechoslovakia and with serial #817680.  We are unsure of the number series in the Czech operation, however this is certainly a late clock with silk screened silvered brass dial, and embossed dial center, pendulum and weights.  The dowels in the old top have been re-newed; seems to  be the original top.  The top mounting could use some additional reinforcement, as there is worm damage at that point.  Movement in need of cleaning. Ht 48"  $500--$800

101E.  C.1795, French, Crown Wheel / Verge Grand Sonnerie Morbier movement and pendulum [no weights], with silk suspension tower on the back of the top frame.   Condition:   this movement is in very clean condition and counts out the quarters & hours on 3 bells.  The dial has a dent at 8 o'clock, and associated cracks, but no loss.  The bottom piece of repoussé dial trim is lacking.  The pendulum is a Provincial grid / lyre in pretty good condition; note on this early movement, the pendulum swings at the Rear of the movement, rather than the front.   Ht 52"  $1000--$1500

101F.  C.1850, French, EMPTY CASE with no lower door, surely for a Morbier weight movement.  We actually set the above movement inside the case to see if it would fit, and it does, with room for the large lyre pendulum.   Despite needing a door, this is a large masculine case, good for either a 2 weight or 3 weight Morbier.  Ht 96"  $300--$500

101G.  C.1975, English ROLLING BALL Clock, kit-made, as found, clean and running intermittently.   Condition:   a good mechanic followed the instructions of this kit fairly well and has the basic layout correct.  However for power he has used a regular English fusee movement from a pub clock, and it simply does not have enough power to run beyond the first few hours of spring tension.   If you enjoy tinkering, this may be for you. In concept the ball travels the zig-zag route on the platform and releases a latch that allows the table to tilt in the other direction, at which the ball begins moving in the opposite direction.   Ht 12.5", 32cm   $1500--$2000

102.  C.1980, Seth Thomas {Div Talley Industries}, Triple Chime wall clock in a mahogany case styled like the famed  No. 2 Regulator.  Condition:  like new; this clock has a good German movement, great sounding chimes {your choice of Westminster, St. Michaels or Whittington tunes} and seems to be working properly.  A well made and decorative clock.  Ht 34"  $500--$600

103.  C.1845, Sperry & Shaw, Courtlandt St, New York,  30 hour OG, mahogany cased shelf clock, 2-weight time and strike.   Condition:  Original finish on case has been rubbed out and is now a bit thin; dial has been nicely repainted by the Dial House.  Absolutely fabulous original tablet of George Washington, standing beside a table with crossed flags above {these New York tablets were painted quite differently than the Connecticut ones, and with a more flake resistant paint}.  About as good as it gets for a nice OG.  Ht 25"   $200--$300

104.  C.1880, Ansonia Clock Co., TRIUMPH, in walnut, 8-day time and strike and with restorations.   Condition:  The 2 finials and 2 drops are recently turned {to match proper samples}, the top tip of the crest is broken away and was smoothed over, the case has been refinished. The two statues are modern replacements.  On the positive side, clock retains original dial, a great indicator pendulum {an uncommon model with Ansonia patent}, a good tablet of Don Quixote {see Ansonia "AMERICA'  for example of this tablet}, and a good beat scale & cathedral gong.  Generally very good condition.  For details, see Tran Ly's [1998] Ansonia book, page 447.  Ht 24"   $450--$650

105.  C.1868, Seth Thomas, 8-Day Column Clock uncommon 8-day duration in short case.    Condition:  overall very good condition, with some minor veneer chips.  Retains original dial, deer tablet, rosewood veneer, decent label [some losses and coming loose].  This small lyre movement is marked Plymouth, and would have been assembled into this case shortly after the Civil war, as the label is Thomaston.  The cord rollers are now made of aluminum, replacement weights made of lead.  The alarm set wheel and alarm are missing, but could be replaced with old parts.  This clock was sold to an eBay bidder in October 2005 {lot 259} and returned because the movement shook apart in transit; we put it back together {nothing missing} and it runs and strikes OK; could stand cleaning. It does look as nice as the fotos!  Ht. 25" $300--$400

105A.  C.1880 Welch, Spring & Co., "Gerster, V.P."8-day time/strike mantel clock, with restorations.  Condition - Refinished rosewood and rosewood veneered case in very nice condition, some spindles on top appear to be restored.  Current black dial with gold numerals seems a proper Welch dial, however, the center has been glued over with a piece of black paper.  Hands are replacements, but of the proper type.  Patti movement is original to the case.  Door glass is original.  Pendulum is new, from China, proper copy of Welch sandwich glass pend..   Remains of a label on the back of the case {no longer legible}.  In original condition, this would have been worth $2000.  Ht 16.5" $800--$1200

105B.  C.1880 Welch, Spring & Co., "Patti, V.P."{full size #1} 8-day time/strike mantel clock.  Condition - Rosewood and rosewood veneered case in very nice condition with an original finish, restoration of the top finials {new rosewood finials with proper profile}, and small veneer repair on the bottom front corner, plus a single hole through the back.  There is a small spot of lifted veneer on each side of the back edge of the top.  Patti movement is original to the case.  Painted dial is very nicely done, to proper scale, but is a modern replacement.  Hands are replacements also, and the proper type.  Door glass is  original.  Pendulum is new, from China, proper copy of Welch sandwich glass pend..   Nice label on the back of the case.  In original condition, this would have sold for $2000.  Ht 18.5"   $800--$1200

Brown},  30 hour time and strike rosewood steeple, full size, with alarm.   Condition:  the case has been refinished, has some nicks and scrapes, veneer chip base lower right, lower left and peak.  One might think at first that J. C. Brown had died at this time, however Elisha Welch took over the Brown business in 1855, and Brown did not die until 1872.  In 1864 as Welch acquired more companies, the organization {and labels} changed to E. N. Welch Manufacturing.  In any case, this is an earlier steeple clock with original dial {with margin losses}, label {with lower water stain}, bell, gong and alarm mechanism.  Original frosted heart shaped tablet with wear.  Ht 20"  $150--$200

130.  C.1915, German, Black Forest Shelf Cuckoo, forest motif, with new rear dust cover, and less top trim.   Condition:  the clock was restored maybe 20 years ago, with new covers for the bellows and a movement clean.  Somehow it has gotten separated from its carved top, and someone has put an old set of hands with it for which the centers are too large {they can be bushed to fit}.  Half the numerals on the dial are missing.  Cuckoo bird is old and intact.  Running duration on these spring clocks is 2 days.  Has a heavy cast frame movement with lyre plates.  Ht 16"   $200--$300

131.  C.1910, Wm. L. Gilbert, Progress No. 56, Hanging gingerbread with pressed "Owl" pattern.   Condition:  Maybe 70 years ago, the bottom of the clock got broken away and a determined owner had his repairman make a new splat from his memory…it has sure been there a long time.  But investigation reveals that the lower design is cut into the wood, rather than pressed and the center owl has been cut out of veneer and then glued onto the splat.  Having said these things, this is an uncommon and desirable Gilbert model, and even a collector can accept these changes allowing of course for the price he pays.  From a distance there is NO awareness of the restoration.  There is also a shelf model of this clock.  Ht 24.5"  $250--$350

132.  C.1890, Austrian, 2nd Baroque, 3-Wt Grand Sonnerie wall clock in walnut, 8-day duration with engraved pulleys.   Condition:  this is a clock that was purchased too quickly by the owner, yet still has possibilities.  The  dial center is from another clock, and the inner bezel stressed a bit to get it to fit.  But that is not the hardship; the problem is that the winding holes do not line up.  You will need to cut a brass circle and space the 3 winding holes properly in order to be able to wind this clock.  The chapter ring itself has a couple hunks of missing porcelain, not too bad from a distance.  The backboard is held on with dry wall screws; case refinished.  These problems are not obvious in the foto, which is how the clock was purchased.   Ht 48"  $1200--$1500

133.  C.1885, German, for the English Market, 2-fusee, wooden plate, drop octagon wall clock with countwheel bell strike on the hour.   Condition:   all of the inlay is missing from the mahogany veneered front.  The movement strikes and ticks weakly….will need cleaning, however is complete and sound, and a very good example of Black Forest work at the time.  Although the plates are wooden, this seems to be an 8 day with cut steel pinions and brass bushings.   If this were an English clock with brass movement, it would fetch around $700 in this condition.  There is a small London sticker on the rear.  Ht 21"   $250--$300

134.  C.1830, Austrian, Rahmenuhr, or Picture Frame Clock, 30 hour, time and strike in a gilt frame with ebonized surround.   Condition:  there are some problems to deal with:  the rear dust cover is half missing, easy enough to replace with thin pine; the gong has been pulled out of round and is rubbing on itself and will need replacing.  Movement itself is complete and sound, just dirty.  See a similar example in Kaltenböck's book, Viennese Timepieces, {1993}page 176. Ht 19"  $400--$500

135.  C.1900, English, Souvenir picture clock, 30-hour, a night scene showing Big Ben, with the clock mounted in a box behind the picture, and the hands showing in the same location as the dial of Big Ben.   Condition:  above average for sure; many of these have not survived well and this one is pretty good.  The painting is still good, with its MOP intact, and the dial is still good as well.  There is some loss and touch up on the gesso around the outside of the frame, and the frame has some warp to it.  Ht  27"   $200--$300

136.  C.1900, Vermont Clock Co., Fairhaven,  8-day crystal regulator timepiece, lever 'scape.  Condition - case in nice condition with most of the gilding worn off.  Original porcelain dial is perfect and hands are original.  Beveled glass panel in the rear door is chipped on each bottom corner.  The rest of the panels are perfect.  Beautiful nickel-plated and damaskeened signed rear plates with a jeweled escapement.  An uncommon make, since their total production was only 3000 clocks of all  styles from 1896 to 1902.  Ht 9.5"   $300--$500

One of the mounting hooks to hold the movement in the case is missing.  This configuration can be a bit fragile, and this case is especially good, despite the tarnish present.  Ht 10.5"   $50--$100

138.  C.1890,  German, (Badische Uhrenfabrik G.m.b.H.) 30-hour music box alarm timepiece.  Condition - Nickel and brass case is in pretty good condition with some tarnish.  Celluloid dial is perfect and hands are original.  Movement is stamped with a B inside a crescent.  Tune plays with some buzzes, as dampers are bad, but still sounds Ok for a novelty clock.  Ht 7"   $50--$100

139.  C.1845,  Birge & Fuller,  8-day Sharp Gothic on Frame with candle finials time/strike wagon spring clock.  Condition - Mahogany case has restoration issues.  Privacy glass in doors is not original.  Dial now has a paper Swigart overpaste, and a crude metal strip has been attached to the bottom of the dial to create an odd type mounting.  Hands are not original.  Door latches are old but not original.  We have never seen ripple molding on this model, and yet it has been there for well over 100 years.  The moldings that support the candle finials are not original as they are not the correct form, although they are old.  One of the candle finials appears to be a replacement..  Signed movement appears original to the case, although badly repaired.  There is a small fragment of label in the case. One ball foot is missing. Right lever has been welded; rest of wagon spring assembly OK.  Case could be restored or used for parts to restore a better example.  Ht 25.5"   $400--$500

145.  C.1874,  Ithaca Calendar Clock Co.,  "No. 8 Shelf Library", 8-day time/strike calendar clock.    Condition - Walnut case in as found condition with an original crusty finish.  Moldings that complete the arch top are missing from the sides and front as well as the top between the center finial {see lot 113}.   Original finial is missing part of its top.  Lower bezel hinge poorly repaired.  Movement and calendar are original as well as the hands.  Original paper dials show signs of wear and age; a sticker removed from calendar dial took part of printing.  Original calendar rollers are very dark and dusty.   Instructions label on back of case.  Pendulum hanger is original, but the old pendulum is not.  For details on this model, see Tran Duy Ly's yellow calendar book {1997}, page 140. fig 339.
