The area below the dial is a hand painted scene of a French couple in Louis XIV attire. The sides and rear of the case have raised floral patterns with 24K gilding. Xlnt porcelain dial and fancy gilded hands; height 14.5" $1200-1800
351-c. C.1880, French 3-Piece Garniture set, gilded white metal with porcelain china accents. Quality time & strike mov't signed Japy Freres. Note outstanding panel dial with two ladies reading a letter, a cameo of a lady on the urn at top. The tripodic urns are in perfect condition. All 3 pieces retain their gilt wood bases with aqua velour. and orig frosty yellow gilding. Nice; ht 18" $2000-2500
351-d. C.1850, G. Philippe, 66-61 Palais Royal, Paris (signed on dial & movement). At the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1855, there were considerable clocks on view in the style of Louis XIV, XV & XVI. You may look in Tardy's, pages 260-262 for the basic style represented in this example by Philippe. The renewed interest in the Louis XIV style grew from this point and by the turn of the Century there was prolific production of this decorated architectural style. This all ormolu example is very heavy; the top urn draped with acanthus swags, wavy ribbon over the dial--every surface, front & rear with profuse adornment by gilded leaves, berries and floral spray. Runs; height 21" $4000-5000
352. C.1890, Austria, Viennese 3-weight Grand Sonnerie wall regulator in the Baroque style. The walnut case is in exceptional original condition, with all carvings intact. The movement is a high caliber hand finished Vienna model with a unique trademark -- a pine tree flanked by the initials M· P, the opposite side with "Goldene Medaille". The dial center, weights and bob retain their original gilding over original design--the pattern of cherubs & scrolls was first etched into the brass, and then accented with engraved detail, followed by gilding; height 50" $2000-3000
353. C.1845, Austrian, 3-Weight Grand Sonnerie from the late Biedermeier period. The key lock case has fine hand carved (not molded) appliqué. Top trim is absent. The 72 beat movement of highest Viennese quality has a 2-piece porcelain dial with heavy cast bezel; dial center signed Hoffbauer <other name not legible>. Note delicate 4-spoke pulleys and original silvered brass beat scale. These Biedermeiers have become quite scarce. Height 42" $3500-4500
354. C.1880, French "Windmill" from the Industrial Series made famous by M.M.Diette. Note a separate spring movement in the base powers the blade assembly, while a small lever time only movement serves the clock. With aneroid barometer above clock flanked by two thermometers (one with cracked tube). The unrestored "Mill" with original finish, the silver now oxidized & bright accents with some discoloration. Still a very nice clock; height 17" $1750-2250
355. C.1906, Ansonia "Crystal Regulator #2", porcelain china mantle clock. The body of the clock is very pale green, with dark green corners & accents, and with gold highlights. This clock is from a home in Pittston, PA, and was dusted weekly, hence the gold is about 20% worn off. The open 'scape dial is perfect, mov't runs and with original retailers label intact in base; overall very good to xlnt; ht 17.5" $1500-2000
355-a. C.1980, John P. Creed, Jr. (Massachusetts), a faithful copy of Curtis' famous girandole. With a Kilbourne & Proctor movement and Aurora tablets; brightly gilded with 24K leaf; although not old, it is a show stopper; height 43" $2500-3500
356. C.1885, French, "Lighthouse" clock from the Industry Series. This large lighthouse has the striking movement mounted in the base, the unusual feature of locking & unlocking a conventional verge with a detached torsion suspended pendulum is based on German patent #21340, dated May 17, 1882. Rotating with the pendulum, outside of a reflector ring, are 3 glass prisms, simulating the lantern lens. The suspension wire will need adjustment before running. Ht 24" $3000-4000
357. C.1890, F. Kroeber, New York, "Noiseless Rotary No. 1" This is a very nice clock, with original dial and bezel with gilt rope trim. The ball on the pendulum has been newly copied from an old one and clock seems to keep time. There is a partial "Directions" label on the base which retains orig black paint. Orig dome is perfect. If you discount the Briggs rotary clocks, Kroeber made more rotary, or "conical" pendulum clocks that any other American firm; ht 21.5" $3000-3500
358. C.1880, Swiss, C. V. Berger, Interlaken (signed), fabulous 3-piece carved clock set, with typical French T/S movement. This clock and the 2 torche' are so large that we had to stand back a good distance to include them all in the photo; see dimension to help you visualize them. The main clock is of a pheasant family: cock, hen and chicks, and the torche' are of finely woven vines and leaves with a cup on top for a 4"+ diameter candle; height 38" $5000-7000
359. C.1890, E. Howard & Co., Boston, "Regulator No. 70-20". This is the next to largest size (there were 5) in excellent condition. Note the tablet has been improperly replaced, but Lee Davis or Tom Moburg can paint you a proper one. Otherwise, the clock retains original golden oak finish, super original dial & hands. Note early double molded bezel. A very difficult clock to locate. Note special crating will be required for shipping; height 48" $3000-4000
359-a. C.1805, Austrian Laterndluhr. This early "Latern" model has many unique characteristics that place its' production right at the beginning of the 19th century. Note the unique self contained & dust free movement design, wherein the dial plate carries the front pivots, and the rear plate mounts directly to a wooden superstructure. The 30 day duration movement is of high quality with fine pivots and end stops. Note the winding drum is bridged out the back of the movement and the weight descends behind the pendulum, on the right side of the case. In early clocks, the dials were not re-fired after the art work was applied, and the Arabic numerals are about 50% worn away. Most unusual is that the pendulum must be installed through the bottom of the case, which slides off of 2 dovetails (renewed) for this operation. The 2-piece pendulum bob is repaired poorly with rivets that protrude around the circumference of the bob. The case is of crotch mahogany veneer over pine, with ebony accents. Clock is in overall very good condition, with exceptions above, and is running. Height 57" $20,000--25,000
360. C.1875, German, Lenzkirch, elaborate walnut case, now with a quality French Japy bell strike movement. This case is among the most elaborate I've seen, with over two dozen pieces of cast bronze trim, brightly polished. The original Lenzkirch pendulum bob is still here, as well as Lenz silvered cast dial with red enamel inlays. Note work on this clock was done by a careful craftsman; enjoy as is, or turn into $2500 clock by finding a Lenz movement. Ht. 22" $1000-1500
361. C.1850, English, Great Wheel Skeleton, with 3 wheel train. We usually associate this train layout with French skeletons, however this clock is definitely English, with anchor 'scape and a heavy stylized anchor. Note finely spoked wheels and also silk thread suspension. No dome; height 15" !500-2000
362. C.1890, Ithaca Calendar clock Co., New York, rare "Box Skeleton" double dial calendar. The open framed movement housed in an walnut "box" with hinged front door and ebonized trim. This clock was purchased in Maine in 1984 and bears a repair sticker from the shop of Gordon Converse dated 1988. We believe the new top carved piece is an accurate replication of an original. The day & month rollers have been repapered. Other than that this is a good example of the skeleton model, clean & running; Height 24" $6000-8000
363. C.1885, E. N. Welch Mfg., Forestville, rare variant of the "Audran B.W." D. J. Gale worked closely with the Welch firm and all of his known calendar models are in cases produced by Welch. Who ever buys this clock will want to send detailed photos to Tran Ly so that he can include them in this next price update. Now it really doesn't matter whether you call this a Welch "Audran" or a Gale "Audran", it is a 100% original clock with Gale's Sept 21, 1885 patent perpetual calendar (so dated) with day, date & month. Note: 2 lower side "ears" have their tips broken, but have been absent for a very long time. Lower dial perfect; upper dial original, but weak. Case is fabulous with original finish and flocked inner back. No label; height 31.5" $2000-2500
364. Mid 19th Century, French Picture Clock, the porcelain dial of just over one inch fills a hole in the canvas centered on the clock tower of the painting. The robust round movement is of the highest quality and is accompanied by a separate Angelus movement that rings a gong set repeatedly to announce prayers at 6am, Noon and 6pm. The canvas was town a little around the dial and has been repaired. Painting shows a couple with a horse drawn cart and two other peasants and animals. A perfect first picture clock for the aspiring collector; frame dimensions = 27 x 32" $2750-3250
365. C.1890, French, Pinwheel regulator in a mahogany veneered case (minor veneer chips, top left). This is a well made clock with simple lines, was just cleaned and is running well. The porcelain dial is perfect and the hands are original. The grid pendulum is of extra nice quality with Berthoud style center bob support and side trim (decorative). As a minor criticism, I note that the dial sets back about 2" from the front glass. This cosmetic situation, though original, could be improved by moving the movement forward and re-securing it. Overall very good cond; height 64" $2000-2500
366. C.1860, a German wooden plated musical automaton movement (originally an organ or flute movement), now lacking the flutes and the pin drum modified to play on a nest of 8 bells, the movement in a typical broken arch case of American origin, also made C.1860. The movement is surmounted by seven articulated dancers, three in a line that dance a little, and four on a carousel that turns around as the bells play. The painted metal dial with Halifax moon appears to be of English origin and a later addition to the movement. The mahogany case with some damaged molding, no right hand rosette on arch, also lacking mahog trim around feet, but with good classic lines and reeded side columns with brass capitals; height 96". Now if this was still in original form (with organ), we judge it would have been a $10,000 clock; as found, we imagine: $3000-4000
367. C.1890, French, Conical Pendulum; this large example with restorations. The marble base was cracked and reglued in several places; a couple bits of linear bronze are missing; the original bronze feet have been secured to a heavy brass plate which sets under the marble. The statue of Rebecca is in good condition and the clock runs well; a very imposing clock; height 35" $5000-7000
368. C.1895, Baird Clock Co., Plattsburgh, NY, Coca Cola Advertising clock, with restoration. This is an unusual and nice clock, with original dial, movement, hands, pendulum and label (label is dark but complete). Although the bezels had to be refinished, the ad is quite prominent: "Coca Cola - The Ideal Brain Tonic; Delightful Summer & Winter Beverage; Specific for Headache." This version of coke's ad is quite rare, and rarer still on a Baird. Height 30.5" $5000-7000
368-a. C.1880, E. Howard & Co., No. 5 Banjo, the case refinished & graining now absent. Clock retains all its' original hardware: orig dial with fading signature, super damaskene pattern pendulum, and colorful orig tablets. The case is stained a pleasant walnut color and would certainly blend well with Victorian furniture; height 29" $1400-1600
369. Mid 19th Century, Swiss Key Wind, 4-tune music box, in restored condition. The 80 tooth comb has 6 replaced teeth and a couple of tips. the 6" cylinder has limited capacity and the tunes play only moderately well. W=12.5" x 5" high $600-800
372. C.1895, Symphonion, "Lyra #33bu", coin-op (5 cent) counter top music box, playing your choice of tunes on 84 teeth in 2 music combs, along with six 11.75" discs. Note original Symphonion gilt transfer on glass has wear, as does "Music Automat". The gold leaf lyre is perfect. Lee Davis or another good restorer could bring back this tablet perfectly. See Bower's Encyclopedia, page 221 for full description; see model 39a for picture of clock & see finials on model 120wu. Clock does not activate the music. Note one dry vertical crack in the rear cover. This is a rare and desirable Symphonion; height 37.5" $6000-8000

This is basically a 28 note barrel piano with the addition of drum and cymbal (see detail photo with doors open). The most unusual feature of this coin-op orchestrion, is that it is weight driven (if you look closely in detail photo, you can see the black cable, up the left side, which goes out the top, across a pulley and down). there is an extra barrel in the base. Each barrel plays 6 tunes. See Bower's Encyclopedia, page 429 for similar models, and details of the firm.
