C.1980, US, Pennsylvania, Wandering eyes MONA LISA, 8-day time and strike, in a brushed gold frame, wall clock. Condition: we are unsure who made these for Merritts in PA, however, we have seen a half dozen or so in the last 20 years, and most can be traced to Merritts. The eyes have a robust motion and Mona is really busy looking around. The print of Mona Lisa is likely unauthorized, brushed over with varnish to give it a painted look, and with a gilt dial on her dress and upper chest. I'm surprised the Chinese have not started making these. Ht of frame 20.5 $200--$300 097. Condition: The 8" silvered dial is engine turned, although much of the pattern is worn away at this point. There is a sunken seconds bit turned right out of the brass dial, similarly engine turned within. Wheels have a high tooth count and we estimate the duration at 30 days or longer. There is a seconds hand, no others, no weight, no pendulum {would swing against the back of a case}. The 4 mounting studs with original nuts are secured from the rear of the case with slotted spanner nuts, one stud bent. This is a unique and well made movement, with the special requirement of needing 5 inches of additional space above the dial for the apparatus that holds the crutch pivot. Ht from bottom of crutch to top = 14" [35.5cm] $2,000--$2,500 104. The movements have been professionally overhauled and are running {note long plate movement, these plates were also used with balance movements}. See super original FENN tablet of a balloon. Ht 17.3" [44cm] $300--$400 108. C.1865, Atkins Clock Co., Bristol Conn, 8-Day, COTTAGE in rosewood with original tablets. Condition: original finish has been roughly scrubbed down with wire wool, there are some chips along the base. Dial has some wear but is basically good. Label touts 30 hour, however blocks and movement are 8-day; seems fine, just an error of the day. Ht 13.4" [34cm] $175--$275 109. C.1860, Seth Thomas, Plymouth Hollow, Conn, ROUND BAND, 30 hour time and strike shelf clock in mahogany with original ST hands. Condition: there are two severe rub spots clear through the veneer, one on the door and one on the outer band, and the case has over-coated over orig finish. The period dial fits perfectly, but is a Waterbury Click Co dial. Best part is the Wm. B. Fenn fruit bowl tablet. Ht 16.2" [41.5cm] $150--$200 110. C.1850. Brewster & Ingrahams, Bristol, Conn, USA, Mini OOG, 30-hour, Brass Spring, time, strike & alarm. Original dial retains strong signature; great original Fenn tablet. Crisp label with some dirt and discoloration. Outboard alarm in base of case is original and intact as well. Ht 17" [43cm] $225--$325 111. C.1987, Japan, Bisque figure of WHISTLING WILLIE, who whistles "3 O'Clock in the Morning", while turning his head from side to side, small quarts timepiece movement in street clock. Condition: some dust and dirt has settled into the porous bisque. Willie whistles ceaselessly on "Manual", however should whistle at the hour and halves on "Auto", and the strike contact in the movement is not engaging reliably. With original box, packing and instructions. Digital tune is on a chip in the base. Ht 15.5" [39cm] $125--$225 111A. C.1900 Waterbury Clock Co., [?] figural clock, iris theme, 8-day time & gong strike onyx and cast white metal. Condition: Onyx parts of the case are pretty good with some roughness on a couple of edges on the front of the base. Whatever type of gold finish was put on the cast metal parts of the case has mellowed to a dull gold look. The figural statue probably has an old repair to the neck, painted over. Porcelain dial has a couple of hairline cracks and chips at the time side winding arbor. Movement is clean and running, however, by all appearances, this is another make case, now with a Waterbury open 'scape movement. Ht 27.75" [70.4 cm] $200--$300 111B. C.1890 English, /Mixed Lot/ 8-day 2-fusee, Giant tambour clock. Condition: Large mahogany veneered case in good condition with original finish, but with some veneer loss and stress cracks where the front and back of the case join. Original 17" dial has been filled/repaired & repainted. Dial was originally fitted with a fusee timepiece movement, but now has a heavy plate chain-drive 2-fusee movement {roughly the same period} & round gong. Hands are the right type and are probably original. Cutout in the rear of the case has been recently enlarged, and would be improved with a door. This is the largest tambour case we have ever seen. Ht 27.5" [69.8 cm] $300--$400 111C. C.1872 Terhune & Edwards, New York, 8-day time/strike/alarm iron front shelf clock. Condition: Cast iron case front in the form of a Scottish Highlander with his dog is in nice condition, but is now over-painted in bright gold. Case is not marked, but could be a Mueller. Original movement marked US Clock Co. was used by Terhune & Edwards in their cases. Stained label inside case. Ht 15.25" [38.7 cm] $275--$375 112. C.1835, John Birge for George Mitchell, Bristol, Conn., 8-day time/strike weight triple decker shelf clock, with potential. Condition: Mahogany veneered case with remains of an old finish in good condition with some veneer loss and chips especially on the bottom. Some veneer has been replaced on the upper door and the bone lock inserts on both doors are missing. Original dial is in pretty good condition with some wear to the numbers. Gilt areas on the case are worn and will need attention. The two caps on the chimneys are upside down. Case houses a nice Ives roller pinion movement with pewter winding drums. The top glass and bottom tablet are missing. Case retains original dust covers. Hands appear to be original, but the hour hand needs a new tin collar to fit to the hour pipe. Ht 36" [91.4cm] $300--$400 113. C.1910, German, shelf cuckoo, 2-day time/strike with restorations. Condition: Refinished walnut case in generally good condition with carved leaves and flowers, rather than the more typical leaves and grapes; bird at top has been broken and glued. Case houses a cast brass plate, spring wound movement. Pendulum and hands are original. Bellows have been replaced with a modern plastic version, but could be easily restored with a pair from an old wreck. Wooden bird is a later replacement, has no articulated wings as is appropriate. There is a small label on the backboard from a Philadelphia jeweler who may have retailed this clock. Movement is clean and clock is in good running order. Ht 21" [53.3cm] $400--$500 114. C.1880, Ansonia Clock Co., NY, CRYSTAL PALACE No. 1, Extra, 8-day, time and strike, on a wooden base, less dome. Condition: the dial paper has been properly re-newed. Cross bars on original pendulum have come loose and the barrels come out in your hand when you lay it down. Mirror and frame are replacements. New lag screws attach back support to base. Ht 17" [43cm] $350--$450 115. C.1975, Repro Seth Thomas, Regulator No. 2, in oak, unknown maker. Condition: Generally good condition, seems to run OK. The movement is signed by the Maker: American Clock--Made in USA, and has cut pinions. The trademark shows the name in a circle outside a small clock dial with the time 20 to 4, and a stylized globe to the left. The modern dial is painted with durable enamel, and with the chapter and name silk screened on. The case front and sides are solid oak, and the back is plywood with veneered front surface. Has a decent look; good originals seem to bring $2000. Ht 36" [92cm] $600--$800 115A. C.1860, Austrian, 3-Weight Grand Sonnerie wall clock in a black serpentine case, 8-day full quarter striking. Condition: this clock has had a very hard life. The case originally had a slide mount, and those holes are plugged; now with a 4-post mount, adapted to rod strike. The door has been sprayed gloss black, inside sprayed flat black, and the finials brushed with gold; no top piece. Pendulum stick is new; engraved bob from another clock; weights do not match; old pulleys do match; side glass both cracked. Does have an old crank and beat scale. Ht 41" [104cm] $400--$500 115B. Mixed Lot: 19th Century Dutch Tail Clock case, stripped, now with C.1900, German painted dial clock striking movement. Condition: this case was apparently grain painted and decorated, now stripped to pine, some additional nicks and scrapes, and nail heads rusty from moisture. The movement, which was made to hang on the wall, is setting in the case on the original seat board. The paint on the dial has had some touch up at various numerals, and the paint on the apple, {which is supposed to appear as a cut apple}, is worn some. The movement appears complete and sound. Big and decorative. Ht 55" [140cm] $175--$275 115C. C.1908 Unknown, 30-hour Ansonia backwind lever movement fitted to a miniature tall clock case. Condition: Nicely made mahogany case in very nice condition with original finish. Looks like a case that a careful craftsman made and fitted this movement. Ht 14.5" [36.8 cm] $100--$150 116. C.1960, New England, banjo timepiece, 8-day weight. At first glance this looks like a Waltham banjo with different glasses, but in fact it is a contemporary mahogany case made by a skilled craftsman who copied a Waltham case {minor variations are apparent only when you hold a real Waltham next to this}. He used a circa 1930 Waltham banjo movement, dial, hands and pendulum; the movement is of the highest quality with maintaining power and bears the Waltham die stamp, and has the serial no. 6941. The eagle is improper and better replacements are available. In any case this is a well made & attractive clock. Note cable has severed and will need re-newing. Ht 37" $500--$600 117. C.1915, Seth Thomas Clock Co, Thomaston, Conn, CHIME CLOCK No. 61, 4-Bell Westminster chime mantel clock on patent Sonora bells. Condition: the case was refinished and a couple of dings filled in along the bottom waist molding, will need staining to match. There are still a couple of side spots that were discolored before refinishing and are noticeable. The movements have been serviced and seem to run and chime OK, with a very pleasant tone. Dial, pendulum, hands and all hardware are original. If you can deal with the small cosmetic issues, you will have a nice clock. Ht 13.2" [33cm] $350--$450 118. C.1880, Anglo-American, Inlaid Wall clock, 8-day gong strike with mirror behind pendulum. Condition: Attractively cross banded & marquetry case with mahogany veneers has been refinished, and is in nice condition. There appears to have been a little trim top center which is now missing; otherwise the case is complete with its finials, knobbies and rolling pin bottom. Retains original barrel style pendulum. Runs robustly. Much nicer than average. Ht 37" [93cm] $375--$475 119. C.1832 C. & L. C. Ives, 8-day time/strike triple-decker shelf clock, with large, strap brass roller pinion movement. Condition: Refinished mahogany veneered case in good condition with a couple of chips on both doors and a couple of small spots on the case. Original painted dial is pretty clean with one small area near 10 o’clock and wear to the numbers. Mirror that slides behind the dial to view the escapement is missing. Hands and mirror are original. Clock originally had ball shape feet, now absent. Bottom tablet is a replacement. Top side returns are missing. This movement is pictured in Roberts' book on Ives, page 110, having plates tapered at top and with large embossed gear wheels with round cut outs. Ht 36" [91.4 cm] $400--$600 120. C.1890, French, Morez baker's clock, picture frame style with brass & MOP inlay, 8-day gong strike with prayer repeat. Condition: overall good+ restored condition. The outer frame originally had "false grain" over gesso, now painted brown & black. The original painted dial is in good condition, the maker or retailer's name now just barely visible. The movement has been recently cleaned, and is running and striking properly. Interestingly this is a relatively late prayer repeater, with a full brass plated movement, rather than the iron frame we normally associate with this feature; still has robust features and very large spring barrels. Ht 24.8" [63cm] $275--$375 121. C.1875, Terry Clock Co., Waterbury, Conn, GIRL & LAMB, one day, spring, cast white metal case. Condition: as most of this type, the case is now painted black. They were originally with a copper/bronze finish. This size case came in two versions, the other with BOY & DOG. All clocks in this series use the S B Terry movement with pivoted pendulum, fine adjustment achieved by turning the small brass bob on the end. Silas died in 1976 and the firm failed in 1880. Full label on rear, dark but legible. Overall very good condition. Ht 11" [28cm] $175--$225 122. A C.1840, French Lantern Style Morez movement, 2-weight, now in a modern walnut veneer tall case. Condition: the robust 1-day movement has full rack ting-tang strike on 2 bells. The composite dial is made of cast lead components riveted to a brass plate, and the chapter ring is coming loose. The pendulum is home-made, and the weights are from another clock, however there are easily replaced. Rear dust cover panels are absent from this case. You could make a wall mounted wag from the movement if you choose. Ht 82" [208cm] $200--$300 123. C.1950. "U.S. Standard", Jeweler's Lathe with around 5 dozen collets, tail stock, steady rest, face plate, cross feed, motor+belts, and a Heathkit solid state motor control. Overall good condition. 12" [30cm] bedplate. $150--$250 124. C.1880, Ansonia Clock Co., NY, QUEEN ELIZABETH, 8-Day time and strike, oak case, LESS top crest. Condition: this came out of a house and has been absent its top for a long while; balance is in good original condition. Original top finials are intact, and retains an especially nice signed dial and properly signed movement. Would be $1250 if complete. Ht as shown 32" [81cm] $500--$750 125. C.1850, J. C. Brown, Forestville, Conn, 8-Day, Decorated Iron Front, with an old repair to one foot. Condition: other than the repaired foot, case retains most of its original gold stenciling and all MOP decorations; there is a complete label inside the case, a signed movement and a signed dial. Hour hand is original; minute hand is period and of proper design, just shortened slightly to fit. Ht 20" [51cm] $175--$225 126. C.1905, Kienzle Clock Factories, 400-day torsion timepiece in very good condition with an original disc pendulum. Condition: Movement is in nice condition, but the base and movement plates are tarnished and will need polishing. Old dome is goodl. Porcelain dial is perfect and hands are original. Serial number on the pendulum and movement match. Ht 10.25" [26 cm] $125--$225 127. Mixed lot: Time train from an A. D. Crane Year movement, now set into a new set of plates, mounted into a Victorian display cabinet, with a metal panel in the lower section. Condition: the workman who set this movement up put a lot of time into it, and the fit and finish of the plates and mounting bracket are both very nice, just not old. The convex fusee is cast brass. The bezel is an adaptation, and the dial paper is newly printed and mounted behind glass. The two pendulum balls appear to be of Crane manufacture. For a complete discussion of Aaron Crane and his clocks, see 1987 Bulletin supplement by Frederick Shelley. Clock seems to run. An original would be several thousand dollars. Ht 30" [76cm] $300--$400 128. C.1900, French, 8-day time & strike barometer +thermometer wall clock in walnut. Condition: Walnut case is in generally good condition with a little damage to the corner of the top left molding. Wooden dial has a shrinkage crack, vertical and had been glued. A couple of the porcelain numbers have hairline cracks. Hands are original. Thermometer has some wear to the numbers and small hairline crack at the bottom mounting screw. Barometer has some damage on the bottom of the bezel caused by stress cracking of the brass and may not be original to this case. Ht 34" [86.3 cm] $250--$350 129. C.1865, Seth Thomas Clock Co., Plymouth Hollow, "Cottage "B"", 30-hour cottage timepiece. C.1990, Chinese, 2-fusee Bracket clock, with crown /verge and center sweep seconds hand. Condition: As new. A prominent dealer in Chinese ware from Southern Ohio imported these clocks by the thousands. They are attractive and well made, just not old {although the first ones imported in the 1970s were antiques}. The rosewood case is well finished and with a carved stand. Front and rear glass slide upward for access to movement. Porcelain dial is xlnt. This clock was consigned by an old timer from Arizona who thought he owned an antique clock. Condition: Refinished mahogany and rosewood veneered case in nice condition with a couple of small chips on the bottom edge. Original painted dial has paint loss around the winding arbors and some touchup at the mounting screws. The hour hand is an old replacement; doesn’t quite match. Tablet is original. The case must have been loose and someone in an attempt to re-glue it misaligned one the octagon sections on the left side. The movement is an unsigned New Haven, which is why we attribute it to that firm as there is no label in the case. Ht 24" [60.9 cm] $175--$275 134. C.1930, Seth Thomas Clock Co., Thomaston, Conn, "Banjo No. 4". 8-day banjo timepiece, spring driven. Condition: Mahogany case in extra nice condition with an original finish. Tablets, hands, eagle finial and pendulum are original. Original silvered dial is very clean except for scratches around the winding arbor. C.1925, Cincinnati Time Recorder, Cincinnati, Ohio, oak cased card punch clock with original door key. Condition: the case has been nicely refinished. The drive shaft for the punch mechanism has been disconnected to help the clock keep better time {was running}, and the shaft is inside the case in a plastic bag. Weight 44 pounds, not easy to ship. Ht 31" [78.5cm] $250--$350 137. C.1880 /Conversion/ French 8-Day timepiece movement, now in nicely made inverted Y frame skeleton plates, C.1950. The workman lengthened the running period of the clock to around 3 weeks by milling off the original gear on the going barrel, and soldering on his gear, nearly 3 times the circumference of the original. The workmanship is pretty good, however he spoked the great wheel with a jeweler saw and his work is evident. The movement has gone some time without a dome and is dark; silvered chapter ring is also oxidized. Old pendulum is ground off on the bottom to give it enough length for time keeping. This is a small clock that will clean up nicely and you can probably buy a dome from Ben Bowen. Ht of clock frame = 7.9" [20cm] add another 2" [5cm] for base. Needs dome around 7.8" wide by 9.5" tall. $300--$400 137A. C.1906, Waterbury Clock Co., Waterbury, Conn., "Arion 10 Inch", 8-day wall timepiece. Condition: Colorful painted chalet style cuckoo clock in very good condition. Cuckoo sounds on the hour, followed by the music box with the Alpine dancers rotating while the trumpeter raises his horn, snow capped peaks in the background. Note a previous owner has coated the rear plate of the movement with Vaseline, and it needs removing with solvent and the movement oiled; despite this, it is running, cucking and dancing robustly. Ht 10.25" [26cm] $100--$150 139. C.1990, German, 30-hour time/strike/music cuckoo clock, animated. Condition: Colorful painted chalet style cuckoo in very nice condition. Carved paw feet look fine and the carved splat has small piece missing on one of the carved leaves {filled with putty}. Pendulum is not original. Door knobs are replaced; 1-period wt, one modern. Notice tigering in columns; Seth Thomas was known for that. Lots of potential for an uncommon 8-day clock. Ht 37" [93.9 cm] $500--$750 145. C.1837, No label, Birge Type, 8-day time & strike full column and cornice shelf clock. Condition: Mahogany veneered case in very good condition with an old finish that has some veneer loss on the bottom and the top edge of the cornice. Original dial has been repainted and lacks the original mirror that slides up to reveal the escapement. Brass hands are original {oxidized dark}. Case houses a large Ives strap brass movement that was most likely made and cased by Birge & Case, Bristol. There is evidence the case originally had ball feet. All three door glasses are old, but maybe replacements with the wrong designs now painted on them. The key escutcheons on the doors are a replacement. Retains nice early gong with square base, introduced in 1837, and good original weights. Ht 34" [86.4 cm] $250--$350 146.
